When Robert Holohan went missing in January 2005, the investigation into his disappearance became one of the largest in the history of the state. Volunteers travelled from across the country to help find the 11-year-old boy from Middleton but the truth behind his disappearance lay closer to home. Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the grim conclusion of that search and the beginning of a tragic story that would divide and devastate a community. In today's podcast, Bryan talks with legendary Hydronics author and trainer Dan Holohan about the history of steam heating and some practical applications of old ideas. Recently, Dan has been working on more novels, having published two of them over the past few months. Steam heating is a “lost art” nowadays; it has become increasingly uncommon and has been disappearing since the Vietnam War. Many people who understood steam heating either retired or died after the Vietnam War. Many elements of steam heating are difficult to understand or surprising. (For example, steam pressure has a surprising relationship with velocity: low-pressure steam moves through piping much more quickly than high-pressure steam.) So, Dan Holohan is on a mission to revive that knowledge and teach the newer generations about the lost art. There are many older steam heating systems still operating today, especially in the older large buildings in New York. Dan learned a lot about steam heating when working on these old systems and optimizing them. Most of the time, he optimized those systems by removing unnecessary accessories, not by adding components like steam traps. Many old boilers used coal as a heat source. Nowadays, many old boilers have been fitted with conversion oil burners with thermostats, but they are still piped for coal. Some systems now have multiple risers or massive vents on the main riser to prevent the thermostats from getting too hot too early and satisfying the thermostat too early. We call that master venting, which reduces pressure and allows steam to move very quickly and efficiently. Dan also discusses: The 2-PSI standard Transportation metaphors for BTUs in steam Harmful renovations for old boilers Replacement vs. restoration mindsets Gaps in steam boiler education Monopolizing the market if you HAVE the education Boiler piping and venting Two-pipe vs one-pipe steam Find out more about Dan and hydronic heating at HeatingHelp.com. Defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard is talking up his chances of being at the Grand Départ of this year's race in Florence on 29 June after the crash at Itzulia Basque Country that left him with serious injuries and complicated his Tour preparations hugely. But will he make it? And if he does, will he be in good enough shape to challenge for the yellow jersey yet again? At the end of a week in which Vingegaard made his first outdoor foray on two wheels since that horrific crash, we hear from Frederik Gernigon, a journalist for the Danish newspaper BT Sport, who has been closely following the Visma | Lease a Bike leader's progress. Gernigon outlines Vingegaard's likely programme going into the Tour, the shocked reaction to his crash in Denmark, and the likelihood of the Dane defending his title. We also speak to Israel-PremierTech coach Liam Holohan, who outlines the processes that comes into play when riders suffer serious injuries and are then guided back to the elite competitive level. Holohan explains why riders tend to push too hard too fast in these situations and how the backroom staff on pro teams ensure that riders recover fitness and form at a rate that doesn't affect their short- or long-term health. Going into a big weekend of racing at the Giro d'Italia, we analyse who are likely to be the most satisfied campaigners come the first rest day at the start of next week – it'll be no surprise at all that we're all tipping Tadej Pogačar to have a very happy Monday. Plus, we hear from our diarist Lewis Askey, who talks through his first week at the Giro, admitting that he's learned an awful lot in seven days, and not only from his evening viewing of Clarkson's Farm with roommate Laurence Pithie. While the Giro peloton were battling through the dust on Tuscany's white roads, a few hundred kilometres away, at the Tour of Hungary, Mark Cavendish clinched his second victory of the season. In the wake of that timely success, we caught up with his coach and Astana team director Vasilis Anastopoulos, who reveals the Manx sprinter's recent struggles, details Cavendish's intense training and racing programme going into the Tour de France which includes a start at the Tour de Suisse, and explains why the British sprinter's Hungarian success is a boost for the whole Astana team. In our regular "How to Make Cycling Better" feature, Soudal QuickStep sprinter Luke Lamperti proposes a radical way to make the action even more aggressive in stage races, a suggestion that will raise the hackles of fans of one particular racing discipline... Interview with Terry Holohan, CEO & Managing Director of Resolute Mining.Recording date: 1st May 2024Resolute Mining, a gold producer operating in West Africa, has undergone a transformative three-year turnaround under CEO Terry Holohan. Despite inheriting significant operational challenges at the company's flagship Syama mine in Mali, Holohan and his team have systematically worked to stabilize and optimize the asset, positioning Resolute for profitable growth. When Holohan took the helm in 2021, the Syama underground mine and sulphide processing plant were struggling with inconsistent performance. Suboptimal mine sequencing and design issues had hampered a transition to automation, while the processing plant battled frequent roaster instability due to variable ore feed. Holohan's first priority was assembling a team of technical experts to tackle these issues head-on."We had to essentially rebuild the plant over a quarter," Holohan recounted. "It was back to basics and joined up thinking required."With the operation stabilized, Holohan turned to aggressive exploration to drive organic growth. Resolute has added 3 million ounces of gold reserves over the past three years, bringing the total to 10 million ounces. This reserve growth has underpinned an expansion project at Syama that will lift annual production from 200,000 ounces to over 230,000 ounces, utilizing latent capacity in the mill.Crucially, this growth is being self-funded by Resolute's improving cash generation. The company has eliminated its debt balance and is generating net cash even after funding $20 million in annual exploration. As Syama's expansion lifts production, unit costs are forecast to continue trending lower, significantly expanding margins.Holohan's turnaround strategy has not been without risks, including a dilutive equity raising early on. However, he emphasized that the raising facilitated vital investments and attracted key North American shareholders who "really bought into the idea that we've got a growing asset here." Holohan sees further potential to scale Resolute into a larger, multi-asset producer over time."Over the next five years, everybody internally and with the fund managers and the shareholders, we all know that there's a tier one mine in the making," he stated, referencing the industry's classification for mines producing over 500,000 ounces annually.Resolute also appears well-positioned to navigate the challenging jurisdictional landscape in West Africa. While Mali has suffered instability and terrorism threats in recent years, Resolute's operations are located in the far southwest of the country near the Cote d'Ivoire border, an area that has remained secure and calm. While Resolute's turnaround is not yet complete, the company has already demonstrated its ability to deliver operational consistency, with 11 straight quarters of improving production and costs. As it brings additional production online at better margins, Resolute is well-positioned to create value for shareholders in the coming years. With a proven management team, robust balance sheet, organic growth pipeline, and long-term optionality for further value-accretive M&A, Resolute presents a compelling opportunity for investors looking to gain exposure to an under-the-radar gold producer in the early innings of an operational turnaround.—Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.com/companies/resolute-miningSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
If this is your first time hearing about trichology, you're not alone. On this episode of HairPod, our host Kevin Rolston speaks with trichologist, hair stylist, and educator Kate Holohan on the subject of trichology. They discuss the causes of scalp and hair disorders, treatment trends, and simple, everyday actions you can start taking today to improve the health of your hair. What is Trichology? Trichology, derived from the Greek word "Trikhos", which means hair, encompasses the study and treatment of various conditions and concerns affecting the hair and scalp. As specialists, trichologists devote themselves to understanding the complexities of these issues, offering tailored solutions and guidance to individuals seeking to rejuvenate and maintain optimal hair health. With their expertise and passion for empowering clients, trichologists play a vital role in promoting confidence and well-being through personalized care and innovative treatments. Kate's journey into trichology began in 2019, despite her extensive experience as a hairdresser spanning two decades. This newfound interest sparked a passion for understanding the intricacies of hair and scalp health, driving her to explore the field further. Interestingly, while prior experience as a hairdresser isn't a prerequisite for pursuing a career in trichology, many individuals from the hairstyling industry, like Kate, are drawn to its fascinating realm. Their familiarity with haircare and client interactions provides a solid foundation for delving into the scientific aspects of trichology. Hairdressers often find themselves fielding questions about hair and scalp health from clients seeking advice. While they can recommend cosmetic products and offer basic tips for maintenance, their expertise is limited when it comes to diagnosing and treating underlying issues. This is where the specialized knowledge of trichologists becomes invaluable. By bridging the gap between cosmetic solutions and medical expertise, trichologists play a vital role in helping individuals achieve optimal hair and scalp health. Their comprehensive understanding of hair biology, coupled with advanced diagnostic tools and treatment modalities, allows them to address a myriad of concerns effectively. In essence, trichology offers a holistic approach to haircare, blending scientific insights with practical solutions to empower individuals to overcome hair and scalp challenges. Whether it's addressing hair loss, scalp conditions, or promoting overall hair health, trichologists are dedicated to providing personalized care and support to each client they serve. Causes of Hair and Scalp Disorders Trichology unveils a fascinating insight into hair health, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of hair issues. While stress or depression can act as catalysts, triggering or exacerbating these concerns, trichology reveals that the root causes often extend beyond surface-level explanations. Delving into the realm of trichology unveils factors contributing to hair woes, from autoimmune disorders to nutritional imbalances and beyond. This holistic perspective emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical and emotional well-being, urging individuals to embark on a journey towards optimal hair health. Intriguingly, trichology challenges conventional notions by unraveling the influences shaping hair conditions. By embracing this multidimensional approach, individuals can unlock new insights and strategies to nurture their hair and scalp, creating a vibrant and resilient mane. Easy Ways to Treat Scalp Issues Scalp issues can be bothersome, but incorporating simple habits into your routine can make a significant difference. Instead of attempting drastic lifestyle changes all at once, focus on small, sustainable adjustments that you can maintain over time. One easy yet effective practice is staying hydrated. Proper hydration supports numerous bodily functions, including hair growth. Additionally, consider investing in silk pillowcases. Their smooth texture minimizes friction, reducing the risk of hair breakage while you sleep. When it comes to nutrition, incorporating dates into your diet can offer hair-boosting benefits. Dates are packed with vitamins B and C, essential for promoting hair health. However, moderation is key—aim for around three dates per day to reap their nutritional rewards without overindulging. By integrating these straightforward strategies into your daily routine, you can proactively address scalp issues and promote overall hair wellness, all with minimal effort. Exploring Hair Treatment Trends and Solutions In the quest for a healthier scalp, many individuals turn to products designed to exfoliate, aiming for a deeper cleanse. However, it's crucial to approach scalp exfoliation with caution, as excessive scrubbing can inadvertently lead to breakage and damage. While Minoxidil presents a promising solution for hair regrowth, its efficacy varies, working effectively for approximately 70% of users. Consider undergoing a genetic test to assess your likelihood of responding positively to Minoxidil. Keep in mind, though, that these tests may come with a hefty price tag. Before embarking on any treatment regimen, it's essential to explore all available options. Some professionals may lean towards medication without discussing alternative solutions first, so it's vital to be well-informed and advocate for your preferences. While genetic hair loss may not have a cure, proactive measures can help slow down its progression, offering hope and options for managing this common concern.
