Topics covered : Traumatic childhood, abandonment, disappointment, pain, breaking negative cycles, self-worth, sport, faith.Last year I sat down to speak to my next guest and I'm finally releasing our conversation.I spoke to Irish professional athlete and coach at Oberstown Children's Detention Centre, Ger Redmond. He's married to Pauline, who he describes as his rock and they have 5 kids together, 4 girls and a boy.A childhood of neglect and dysfunction led him on a destructive path in life which involved joining a gang for nearly 20 years. He turned to a life of criminality when his dream of becoming a professional footballer came to a cruel end due to an event that had devastating consequences for his family and another. He's not comfortable talking through the details of it during our conversation, out of respect to the other family involved. But to understand the severity of it, his father carried out an arson attack which claimed the life of a toddler. Many years later Ger himself spent a couple of years in prison but becoming a father to a son was the catalyst for change. When his son Ross was born in 2016, he completely changed his life. He threw himself into sport and set about breaking the negative cycles of behaviour that had caused so much harm to him and his siblings and today, his life's work is about helping and motivating others. To connect with Ger, go to…Ger Redmond Hosted on Acast. This week, the first group of migrants intercepted in Italian waters arrived in Albania as part of Rome's controversial scheme to process asylum seekers outside the EU. The migrants will be held in pre-repatriation detention centres, known as CPRs. Such centres, which are managed by private companies, have existed in Italy for several years and are severely criticised by human rights defenders, who say migrants there are mistreated. Our Italy correspondent Natalia Mendoza reports, with Tommaso Marro, Simone Bauducco and Charlotte Davan Wetton.

A riot breaking out in the old refugee detention centre in Moria on the island of Levos, in Greece. Detainees broke out of the camp after a child was allegedly beaten, setting part of the camp on fire and breaking down the fences. Police eventually intervened, firing tear gas and forcing detainees back into the camp. The riot took place in April 2016, just after a deal between the EU and Turkey had been announced, which threatened many of the Moria detainees with deportation to Turkey. The camp was fully burned down several years later, with detainees moved to another facility, criticised for lacking basic hygiene and shelter. Recorded by Frey Lindsay. Asylum seekers in the UK may face a new fate once they arrive: being loaded onto an enormous 10,000-ton barge, floating in a port on the south coast of England. It's part of a new hardline-migration policy being rolled out by the British government, and it's being sold to the public with a slogan that will sound familiar to Australians: ‘Stop the boats'. Today, lawyer Madeline Gleeson from the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW, on how ideas from Australia led to Britain's floating detention centre.
