Episode Summary: In this episode of From The Void, host John Williamson sits down with renowned archaeologist and historian Dr. Mark Horton to investigate one of America's most enduring mysteries: the disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. In 1587, over 100 English settlers vanished from Roanoke Island, leaving behind almost no trace—except for a cryptic word carved into a tree: Croatoan. Was the colony destroyed, absorbed into Indigenous communities, or did something even stranger happen? Drawing on decades of research and excavation work, Dr. Horton sheds new light on the evidence, debunks popular myths, and shares the latest archaeological discoveries that might finally solve the puzzle. Together, they explore how this story has shaped American mythology—and why it still captures our imagination centuries later. Step into the void as we trace the footsteps of a vanished colony. Guest: Dr. Mark Horton •Professor of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage at the Royal Agricultural University •Leading expert on early colonial settlements and transatlantic exploration •Director of multiple archaeological projects investigating Roanoke, Hatteras Island, and early English settlements •Advocate for integrating Indigenous histories and archaeological findings into the Roanoke narrative Topics Covered: •The original Roanoke expeditions and colonization attempts •John White's return and the cryptic Croatoan carving •Indigenous tribes of the region and evidence of integration •Environmental challenges, including drought and famine •Recent archaeological discoveries on Hatteras Island •Why the Roanoke story still matters today Recommended Resources & Links: •

The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the most popular unsolved mysteries in American culture - but is it really unsolved? This week, Sarah discusses the litany of mishaps that befell England's first attempt to set up a permanent settlement in North America, and lays out the two most probable reasons why every single British colonizer to lay claim to Roanoke Island disappeared without a trace. We are Back! RedNick and Pat return with a new mystery to discuss: the historical case of the Lost colony of Roanoke Island.
Between mainland North Carolina and the narrow stretch of barrier islands we call the Outer Banks, sits a tiny island, just 12 miles long and around 3 miles wide. Dotted with rich maritime forest and bordered by brackish salt marsh on all sides, it's home to two sleepy towns aptly named Manteo and Wanchese. This is Roanoke Island of course, of Lost Colony fame. But some 300 years later, in the mid 1800s, it was home to another colony entirely, one you've probably never even heard of, a colony whose population soared to just under 4,000 people in a matter of a few years. That's more than the combined populations of Manteo and Wanchese today. This was the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony and its history, its story, some might argue, has become even more lost than the Lost Colony itself. Let's fix that. Paratruth_ Reborn -Roa-nope! The History & Horror of Roanoke Island
Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 10: The Ebb and Flow of Coastal Carolina Languages Hosts: Prue Salasky and Jill Winkowski Date: Oct. 31, 2024 Length: 34.15 min Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each month Co-hosts Prue Salasky and Jill Winkowski delve into the history and language of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, part of the Outer Banks, OBX, of North Carolina, our neighbors to the south and part of our geographical culture in Hampton Roads. They interview two experts on the region. Scott Dawson, whose family traces its roots back to the 1600s on Hatteras, has devoted countless hours to researching the language and culture of the Croatoan people and their early encounters with English settlers. An amateur archaeologist and historian, he has identified artifacts and produced word lists of the Carolina Algonquian spoken on Hatteras Island when the first English settlers arrived in the 16th century. (https://www.coastalcarolinaindians.com/category/research-databases/blair-a-rudes-indigenous-language-collection/). He credits the efforts of English scientist and polymath Thomas Harriot (Hariot) working with Croatoans Manteo and Wanchese for much of what's known today about the indigenous residents, their culture and language. We also learn more about Thomas Harriot and his scientific accomplishments, among the greatest of his generation. Dawson is a founder of the Croatoan Archaeological Society (http://www.cashatteras.com) and also opened a museum on Hatteras to tell a different version of the “lost colony” of Roanoke Island (https://www.lostcolonymuseum.com). . Linguistically, sociolinguist Prof. Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished University Professor at N.C. State, places the dialects spoken on the Outer Banks islands as part of the Tidewater diaspora. For example, the brogue spoken on Ocracoke, he says, is closer to that of Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay than to that of nearby mainland communities. A scholar of language variation, Wolfram contrasts the vibrancy of the distinctive English dialect of the Lumbee in Robeson County with the rapidly declining use of Ocracoke's traditional dialect. He is also the director of the North Carolina Language and Life Project which documents dialects and speech variations. Listeners can find speech samples for the Lumbee, Ocracoke Islanders and many more by searching for The North Carolina Language and Life Project on YouTube. The changes in language use and dialect over 400 years in these coastal communities first tells the story of English settlement and its impact on indigenous communities. Then ongoing changes reveal shifting demographics and how geography intersects with language and identity.
Video Version Only Available on Spotify and YouTube. The Lost Colony of Roanoke. Set during the late 1500s, a period known as the age of exploration and the height of the Tudor dynasty, the story unfolds amidst England's rise to global power, shortly after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. In 1587, under a charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh sent 115 colonists to establish an English settlement on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. Led by Governor John White, the group included men, women, and children, including White's daughter, Eleanor Dare, and his granddaughter, Virginia Dare, who was the first English child born in the Americas. However, after White's return to England to gather supplies, he was delayed for three years by England's war with Spain. When he finally returned to Roanoke in 1590, he found the settlement completely deserted. The only clues left behind were the word “CROATOAN” carved into a fence post and the letters “CRO” etched on a nearby tree. These inscriptions led White to believe the colonists had relocated to Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island), but he was unable to confirm this due to bad weather and damaged ships, which forced his return to England. No further expeditions to locate the colonists were ever mounted, and the fate of the settlement remained unknown. Several theories have been proposed over the centuries to explain the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists. One of the most widely accepted is that the settlers may have integrated with local Native American tribes to survive. Other possibilities include an attack by Spanish forces or that the colonists perished while attempting to sail back to England. Recent archaeological discoveries, such as English artifacts found on Hatteras Island, lend some credence to the integration theory, though conclusive evidence remains elusive. This episode explores these and other theories, while examining the ongoing cultural significance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, and the modern technologies being used in the quest to solve this historic mystery. The Lost Colony is the #4 listener favorite of 443 episodes through 9 years of 1001 Heroes. "The Lost Colony PT II: FOUND!" Tells the incredible story of what happened to the people of Roanoke Island after they abandoned their fort. With interviews and some digging we can see that they were moved to a different location where they were protected from hostile tribes, and over time blended into to Lumbee Indian tribe, which still carries many of their surnames in the area of Lumberton, N.C. This story includes an in-person interview with Fred and Katherine Willard, who served as directors of the Lost colony Center for Science and Research, and who, through tireless research, have uncovered the truth of what happened to most of 115 brave souls whose dream of a new life in the New World got turned upside down when the rescue ships never came. I have added an introduction for this "Best of" episode., which was one of my favorites to make. This is the #4 listener favorite of the 443 (actually 447) 1001 Heroes episodes we have done over 9 years. This one was done in 2017. Part 2 contains an interview with Fred and Katherine Willard, directors of The Lost Colony Center For Science & Research, who are known for their tireless work to identify where the 115 men, women and children that made up "the lost colony" ended up and why they disappeared. Fred passed not long after our in=person interview in Chesapeake in 2017. Here are the notes for part one: "The Lost Colony Part 1: The Dare Stones": In 1587, 115 men, women, and children were delivered to Roanoke Island on the Carolina coast with the hopes of beginning a new English colony in the New World. Storms and war with Spain prevented any supply ships from reaching them for three years, and when the ships arrived, they found the fort deserted, and the word "Croatoan" carved onto the fort's palisade walls. The 115 settlers were gone, leaving no trace, until 1937, when a traveler named Hammond found a large stone at the side of a North Carolina road containing what appeared to be a desperate chiseled message from Eleanor Dare. More stones were found, each containing a clue to the whereabouts of the surviving colonists. They came to be called The Dare Stones. The first stone contained this carved inscription, written in the Elizabethan dialect: https://nativeheritageproject.com/2013/12/08/the-dare-stones-1-through-48/ Learn more about your ad choices. The origins of one of America's oldest unsolved mysteries can be traced to August 1587, when a group of about 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Later that year, it was decided that John White, governor of the new colony, would sail back to England in order to gather a fresh load of supplies. But just as he arrived, a major naval war broke out between England and Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I called on every available ship to confront the mighty Spanish Armada. In August 1590, White finally returned to Roanoke, where he had left his wife and daughter, his infant granddaughter (Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas) and the other settlers three long years before. He found no trace of the colony or its inhabitants, and few clues to what might have happened, apart from a single word—“Croatoan”—carved into a wooden post. Sources: Cascone, S. (2021, December 9). Nearly 3 years later, when a ship finally returned with supplies and aid, they found a puzzling scene. The entire settlement had been shuttered, with not a single trace of the colonists anywhere to be found. There was one single cryptic clue that may suggest the fate of the 115 British colonists- the word 'CROATOAN' carved into a fence. Over 400 years later, the mystery of the lost colony still puzzles and haunts curious folks the world over. This week, we dig in to the fascinating history of the doomed settlement and attempt to crack this case. Will we solve this centuries old mystery? Tune in to find out! Happy Haunting!
These three stories, including the Salem Witch Trials, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island and Franklin's Lost Expedition, will transport you to another time. Learn where the term "witch hunt" originated, how many settlers have to go missing before a colony is finally abandoned and the doomed fate of early explorers seeking a northern passage to the Pacific from the east coast of Canada. Send us a Text Message. In 1586 Sir Francis Drake arrived off the coast of present day North Carolina with a massive fleet, ships heavy with Spanish gold and riches he'd stolen privateering in the Caribbean, South America, Florida. He came to check in on the Roanoke colony - a group of 108 Englishmen who had set up a fort on the North end of Roanoke Island, part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. He came bearing these stolen gifts to give to the colony he thought was surely flourishing by now. He found them in bad shape and whisked them back to England to save them from near certain death. But did you know, Drake had more than gold and silver aboard his ships? He had a reported 500 enslaved Africans and Indigenous South Americans that he had also stolen from the Spanish. Did you know that when he returned to England, 400 of them were missing? And did you know that despite the fame and infamy of the English Lost Colony that would disappear a year later, there may have been a whole nother lost colony left behind by Drake that no one even cared to look for? Let's fix that. Send us a Text Message.John White stares at the sun bleached skull. Empty eye sockets stare back. This was surely one of Grenville's men. But 15 stayed behind to hold Fort Raleigh. Where were the rest of them? “Governor White,” one of the men speaks up, “we should go.” White nods, but go where? He's still rattled from the news he was given back at the ship, still trying to make sense of it. As they'd clamored into the boat to head to shore, the ship's pilot, Simon Fernando, had leaned over the railing. “Leave the men on shore,” he had yelled down in his thick Portuguese accent, “you come back for the rest.” White hadn't understood at first. They were only here to find Grenville's men. They were meant to sail on to the Chesapeake Bay farther north, to settle in a more accessible spot, with friendlier native people. “Summer is far spent,” Fernando continued, “I will land all the planters in no other place.” They were stuck, it seemed, on Roanoke Island, stuck amidst hostile enemy territory. Send us a Text Message. In 1587, John White arrived on Roanoke Island, part of the Outer Banks of present day North Carolina. He was part of an expedition sent by Queen Elizabeth I of England to establish a permanent colony in the Americas. White was to be the governor of this new colony. But this wasn't his first time on Roanoke Island. He had been part of an earlier expedition in 1585. An expedition that did not end well. And, spoiler alert, this new attempt would meet an even more disastrous end when as many as 116 men, women, and children disappeared entirely, going down in history as the mysterious “Lost Colony of Roanoke.” But did you know, there's a lot more to the story than what a handful of Englishmen recorded back in the 1580's? A whole nother side to the story, that is mostly left out? Roanoke Island's first English settlers vanished without an explanation. On Roanoke Island, we stopped by the Fort Raleigh Visitor Center to read about the "Lost Colony," Native Americans, and the Freedman's Colony. In Manteo, North Carolina, we peer out of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a replica of the 1877 lighthouse. At the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum, we observe staff restore historical vessels.

Were The Lost Roanoke Colony Killed By Werewolves? Real RECENT Roanoke Werewolf Survivor SPEAKS!In folklore, a werewolf, or occasionally lycanthrope, is a human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf, either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction with the transformations occurring on the night of a full moon. WikipediaThe origins of one of the America's oldest unsolved mysteries can be traced to August 1587, when a group of about 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. He found no trace of the colony or its inhabitants, and few clues to what might have happened, apart from a single word—“Croatoan”—carved into a wooden post.werewolf, roanoke, campers, paranormal, supernatural, dogman, sighting, swamp, true stories, true horror, american horror story, drama reconstruction, cryptid, cryptozoology, american werewolf, revolver, roadtrip, ghosthunters
Bonus Content from Majestic Jam I'm Not Crazy In August of 1578, 115 settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. It was the second attempt by settlers to create an outpost there, and they were once again met with difficulties. It was decided that Governor John White would sail back to England for provisions, leaving a wife, daughter, and granddaughter. In August of 1580, John White returned to his family and community, but when he arrived all of the settlers had mysteriously disappeared. One of the only clues for him to work off of was the letters “Cro” carved into a tree. No one from the community was ever seen again. Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. David opens Family Histoire News with the story of some tattered bonds found in an attic in Louisiana. Wait til you hear what they're going to bring to the finder, despite their wretched condition after Hurricane Katrina! Then, big news for Irish researchers. Hear what David has to say. Then, hear why Cubans both on the island and off of it are looking for dual citizenship… and for two very different reasons. Roanoke Island is back in the news again for archaeological finds that may reveal more about the earliest European settlers and the local natives. David has details. And, Smithsonian Magazine online has written about a minstrel show manuscript that has been discovered, and it dates back to the 15th century! Next, in two segments, Fisher visits with Gage DeWitt of Louisiana, Justin DeWitt of Kentucky, and Perry DeWitt of New York State. They are all distant cousins to each other, and to Fisher. All descend from Tjerck Claessen DeWitt who died in 1701 in Kingston, New York. Last summer, these guys exhumed the remains of Tjerck, his wife Barbara, daughter Taatje, and son Andries for study. (Listen back to Episode 445.) But then… things started happening that NO ONE can explain. Hear their stories and what has been the unexpected result of their dig! Then, David returns for Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
