Hello, Hello, Hello! In our third (of three!) episodes on Queerness in Film this month, Dhruv invites Queer Academic & SRK and KJo Fanboy Cris Patrick (@limjaeseven) to discuss the one thing he wanted to talk about most, the thing that in many ways defines his Twitter Page - QUEER CODING, READING & CAMP SENSIBILITY IN BOLLYWOOD. We emphasize the words "Coding, Reading, and Camp Sensibility" most because our focus for this episode is on films that covertly (or, at least, less self-seriously overtly) position themselves as queer narratives about queer people. This includes all films written and directed (yes, even ghost-directed) by Karan Johar and Farah Khan. But for the sake of clarity, we focus most explicitly on Johar's work -- "Kal Ho Naa Ho" (2003) for Queer Coding, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (2001) for Queer Reading, & "Student of the Year" (2012) vs. "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" (2023) for Camp Sensibility. Listen to the full episode to first hear us talk at length about embracing Bollywood Camp (or Campy Bollywood) and its inherent Queer Sensibility. (We use Susan Sontag's "Jottings" on Camp and Jack Babuscio's essay on Camp and Gay Sensibility to form our argument.) And then about particular scenes from each of these films that help define what it means to Queer Code & Queer Read (or Queer Bait)! TIME CODES Embracing Camp Bollywood - [00:00 - 16:21] What is "Camp" (ft. Susan Sontag & Jack Babuscio) - [16:22 - 55:24] What's Your Problem if I Want To Queer Read? - [55:25 - 59:54] Queer Coding in "KHNH" - [59:54 - 01:26:53] Queer Reading in "K3G" - [01:26:53 - 01:52:45] Queer Sensibility in "SOTY" vs. "RARKPK" - [01:52:45 - 02:19:44] Planning a Future Farah Khan Ep - [02:19:44 - 02:32:00] Do hit 'Follow' on Spotify if you haven't already to help the podcast reach more people! The book now before the reader consists of a series of miscellaneous articles and sermons which have been written or preached at different times during recent years. They have been collected at the earnest solicitation of friends who have considered them to be of some value, and they are now sent forth with the sincere desire on the author's part that they may be used of God in opening up some of the precious things of His Word to those who may have had limited opportunities for Bible study or who, in a busy life, may have passed over some of the things here emphasized. God's Word is ever new to those who have learned to love and feed upon its precious pages. In these papers I make no claim for anything specially original, but I send them forth remembering the word, “To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe” (Phil. 3:1). If God be pleased to use them to strengthen the faith of any, or to lead into a deeper knowledge of His truth—that truth which sanctifies in a practical sense—I shall feel abundantly repaid for the effort involved in their preparation. H. A. Ironside Moody Memorial Church, Chicago, Ill. This book is presented on Down To Earth But Heavenly Minded Podcast by I W Risch

EDWARD DENNETT was born on the Isle of Wight in 1831 at Bembridge and died in Croydon in Oct. 1914 after a short illness. His people were all in the Church of England. Still, he was converted as a lad through the instrumentality of a godly clergyman. He left the church from conviction and became minister of a Baptist Chapel in Greenwich, having previously matriculated at London University. In 1873 he contracted a severe illness through visiting one of his parishioners and was sent abroad for a year by his people. He wintered at Veytaux and, coming in contact with ´brethren´ staying at the same ´pension,´ he had a good deal of intercourse with them, which helped to clear in his mind specific difficulties that he had. Taking no steps till his return, he explained his views and resigned his charge. Shortly after ´breaking bread´ for the first time with those gathered simply at the Lord´s table "unto His Name." Mr. Dennett had the pen of a ready writer. His sphere of labor was England, Ireland, and Scotland, and he paid visits to Norway, Sweden, and America. He had pastoral and teaching gifts of a high order.

The Chinese Communist Party’s refusal to reconcile with its past, explained by Orville Schell

“Can a society which has not...come to terms with its own past go on to have a successful future, or do the sins of the past somehow...come back to haunt it and reexpress themselves in some mutant form?” This is a question that the seasoned historian and scholar of China, Orville Schell, has been thinking and publishing academic articles about in recent years, and is now writing a book on. Schell has stated that "nowhere is history more relevant to the future than in China, a nation that has for millennia seen its destiny inextricably connected to the dynastic record of what has preceded." On the one hand, the idea that a psycho-reconciliation with the past is necessary for a country is a very Western, and a very Freudian, concept. But partly, that’s because it seems to have worked in the West — if Germany had not recognized its own past atrocities, could it have amicably dealt with its neighbors and become a leader in today’s Europe? But the Chinese Communist Party’s official position is that no reconciliation is necessary. A Party communiqué called Document No. 9, which was leaked in 2013, made clear that certain historical events and ideas were strictly off limits, and that discussing them publicly was nothing but “historical nihilism.” That is not to say that there haven’t been attempts in China — by intellectuals, activists, and even the government, particularly in the 1980s leading up to 1989 — to critically analyze the past to avoid similar mistakes in the future. But the status of historical inquiry in China today is bleak, and Schell has a lot to say about what that may mean for the country’s future. Recommendations: Orville: The works of the legendary writer Lu Xun, whose writings inspired by his love-hate relationship with the history, philosophy, and traditional culture of China remain a must-read for understanding why China is the way it is. Check out Wild Grass, translated by Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang, and Jottings under Lamplight, a new compilation by Eileen J. Cheng and Kirk A. Denton. Tensions have been rising on the Korean peninsula. What are our options? My guest Jeremiah Jenne is a historian living in Beijing. He has been to North Korea multiple times, including just a few weeks ago (I have been there as well). Jeremiah laid out three potential military strategies for the US to intervene in North Korea; unfortunately, all of these options are various shades of terrible. He also talked about diplomatic strategies, which also are controversial and risky. Jeremiah has several other projects in Beijing. He runs a small company called Beijing by Foot, which gives walking tours of historical sites in Beijing. I went on one of these tours to the Summer Palace and thoroughly enjoyed it; highly recommended for anyone who wants a taste of old Peking. Jeremiah's blog is Jottings from the Granite Studio. This includes the writing he does for other publications, as well as his Podcast, “Barbarians at the Gate.”

On April 15, 2010, on the 21st anniversary of former Party Secretary Hu Yaobang’s death, Premier Wen Jiabao published an essay to eulogize his former mentor in the People’s Daily. On April 15, 1989, the death of this foreign-minded general secretary of the Communist Party famously touched off the student demonstration of that year. It is a highly-emotional essay, which recalls a trip he took to Guizhou in 1986 with Hu Yaobang, a good friend of his that he worked with and admired. He particularly emphasizes Hu’s qualities, especially the populist rhetoric that he learned and now applies. In today's episode, we first visit this speech and ask what it really tells us about the political landscape in China. Does it telegraph an ongoing rift between a “populist” faction headed by Wen Jiabao, Hu Jintao, and Li Keqiang and a competing “princeling” elite represented by Xi Jinping? Early in the morning of April 14th, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake leveled roughly 90 percent of the buildings in Yushu County in southern Qinghai Province. So far more than 2000 people are now reported dead, and practically the entire population of the affected area is living in tents or in temporary housing. Qinghai, and particularly this area of Qinghai, is heavily Tibetan. This dimension of the quake as well as Beijing’s handling of the rescue have become part of the focus of the story. Is the ethnic dimension of the rescue overplayed by Western media? Do encounters between Tibetan monks and Chinese government officials demonstrate tension or a successful relationship? How does the government’s ability to deliver disaster relief relate to the historical concept of the Mandate of the Heaven? Joining Kaiser Kuo this week are Gady Epstein, Beijing bureau chief for Forbes magazine and Guardian correspondent Tania Branigan, fresh back in Beijing after a reporting trip to the remote earthquake region and with a first-hand account of the rescue efforts there. We're also joined by Jeremiah Jenne, Dean of Chinese Studies at the IES program in Beijing, who helps put both events in historical perspective. You may know Jeremiah as Qing historian and author of the blog Jottings from the Granite Studio.
