AT: Un jāklausās. Kamermūzikā vienam otru jāklausās, neatkarīgi no mūziķu skaita. Kas ir laba kameransambļa pamatā? Kādas kvalitātes gaidāt no saviem saspēles partneriem? AT: Jā, piekrītu Ērikai. Klausīšanās ir vissvarīgākā pazīme kamermūzikā. ĒJ: Un man ļoti patīk sadarboties ar citiem mūziķiem.

Dan joins us from Lam Partners Architectural Lighting where they are “crafting luminous environments for people to spend their lives in.” That luminous environment requires lights, obviously, but also controls. That being said, Dan points out that the most successful projects are ones that have simple user interfaces. As Ron says, “You can have the most complicated control system on the back end, but if that end user experience isn't simple and easy, people just get confused.” But even the simplest design needs coordination and communication between the architect, engineer, and lighting and controls designers–A Team Effort. Dan Weissman, AIA, IALD, IES is an award-winning Architectural Lighting Designer, researcher, and craftsman specializing in sustainable design and digital technologies. As Associate Principal and Director of Lam Labs at Lam Partners, he collaborates on innovative projects and engages with leading academics to advance the field. Dan serves as Chair of the IES Daylighting Committee, is an active member of the IES Sustainable Design committee and Solemma's Climate Studio Product Advisory Group, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Flint Collective. He periodically teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and is a frequent guest lecturer nationally and internationally. An avid musician and amateur luthier of mandolin-family instruments, Dan also tends a garden, and two children along with his artist wife Lanie, and bakes two sourdough loaves a week.

This one is short but important. Michael and Greg discuss the recent Restoring Darkness podcast featuring Dr. Mario Motta (https://youtu.be/tEbcyBf-2Ug). Michael and Greg want to get to the bottom of the conflict between Dr. Motta and the IES. They'd love to hear the IES's side of the story.

We invited Dan onto Restoring Darkness to discuss wallpacks, those glaring lights you see on the sides of commercial and industrial buildings that seem to point straight into your eyes when you're driving on the road or walking on the sidewalk. As these lights are purportedly for safety and security, the conversation morphed into a discussion about the need for light at night. Dan points out that there is light needed for safely walking down the sidewalk, light to feel safe and secure, and light to know where you are. There are many nuances to solving this, but as Dan points out, we can at least start with the glare from wallpacks. This month, Mark talks with F. Joseph Merlino about the work he has done using grants from the National Science Foundation to reform math and science education. They talk about his work in Egypt overhauling their whole education system, working with the decision-makers to identify their biggest challenges and then how they can design school around preparing students to solve those big problems. They talk in particular about the success of the government-funded STEM schools and the role that modelers played in training the educators. They talk about formative assessment, and how it is not only for the benefit of the teacher, but also the New Era-New Urgency: the Case for Repurposing Education. They talk about the purpose for education or for teaching the particular things we teach, and the "shadows" that every teacher or reform person must confront even before walking into a school. Guests F. Joseph Merlino F. Joseph Merlino's academic background is in chemical engineering and cognitive developmental psychology. He is the president of the 21st Century Partnership for STEM Education (17 years). He has been a PI and project director of numerous large-scale NSF, IES, and USAID projects, including a Targeted Math Science Partnership involving 45 school districts and 13 colleges and universities. For the past 12 years, he has been directing a STEM project for the Egyptian Ministry of Education establishing 21 New STEM high schools and new STEM teacher prep programs in 5 Egyptian universities. He has employed many modelers as consultants on these projects. He is co-author of a new book entitled NEW ERA-NEW URGENCY: The Case for Repurposing Education by Lexington Books (2024) Highlights [4:47] F Joseph Merlino "Actually, this idea that physics instruction and science instruction could be different, goes back to the 1880s." [17:01] F Joseph Merlino "we had to use the assessments as a foot in the door as a way to open the door to then introduce a different pedagogical approach." [24:06] F Joseph Merlino "the idea of the formative assessment that we talk about is that if you're cooking something, for example, if you're cooking, a dish, a stew, for example, you sample it along the way, and then you add ingredients as you need in order to suit it to the taste." Welcome back, listeners, to Diverse Thinking Different Learning! In this episode, we're having a conversation with Dr. Sarah Powell, a distinguished professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Associate Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Dr. Powell's expertise in math education sheds light on effective strategies to support students who face challenges with math! The discussion explores the crucial role early math education plays in shaping a student's future academic success, emphasizing that early struggles can lead to long-term difficulties if not addressed properly. Dr. Powell elaborates on how cumulative math skills impact later learning, stressing the importance of early intervention and continuous support throughout a student's educational journey. Dr. Powell also highlights several best practices for math instruction, including the use of multiple representations to deepen understanding and systematic, explicit teaching methods to ensure mastery of concepts. She also addresses the role of math vocabulary and its significance in helping students grasp mathematical ideas more effectively. Tune in to gain valuable insights into how targeted interventions and effective teaching strategies can make a significant difference in students' math achievements. If you are an educator yourself seeking to enhance your math instruction or perhaps a parent looking to support your child's learning, this episode of the show is sure to offer practical advice and actionable strategies to help all students excel in math! Show Notes: [3:14] - Early math performance predicts future success, making early intervention important for long-term achievement. [6:06] - Dr. Powell points out how schools often prioritize reading over math, but early math interventions are just as important. [9:01] - Dr. Powell argues that teaching math vocabulary is essential for understanding concepts and participating effectively in the classroom. [11:59] - Difficulties in math may be linked to language issues, including reading, writing, and speaking. [13:04] - Using multiple representations, like manipulatives and drawings, can help students better understand math concepts. [15:24] - Dr. Powel feels that students should understand math deeply by using various representations, not just by memorizing symbols. [18:55] - Identifying common mistakes better helps target instruction than addressing isolated mistakes. [20:02] - Dr. Powell argues that effective math learning involves modeling, repeated practice, and building fluency through both speed and accuracy. [23:53] - Incorporating short fluency practices into the school day enhances math skills and helps reduce cognitive overload. [25:34] - Older students should develop fluency to avoid using basic strategies like tick marks, which can lead to mistakes. [26:55] - Effective strategies for solving word problems include the U.P.S. check method and recognizing common problem types. [31:16] - Dr. Powell explains how parents can help with word problems by discussing the problem and identifying consistent frameworks. [32:43] - Parents can also support math learning through discussions, games, and incorporating math into daily activities. [35:25] - Engaging in practical math activities, like measuring ingredients, makes math fun and relevant! [38:57] - For additional support, resources include emailing Dr. Powell as well as videos on representations, a free math course, and teacher-friendly materials! About Our Guest: Dr. Sarah R. Today's show featured an interview with TalentRemedy Managing Director Stephanie Rowsie and Donald “The Sales Evangelist” Kelly. STEPHANIE'S ADVICE: “Put yourself back out there. I was recently at the IES awards ceremony with 200 plus people, dynamic salespeople and sales leaders. I walked out of there feeling like I was on fire. I was like, “I want to be one of these people. I want to be one of these people who get up and show up and have the energy and make conversations and represent my company well.” DONALD'S ADVICE: “The biggest thing that I go back on whenever I see my motivation wane, is I look back at why am I doing what I'm doing? This couldn't come at a better time because of stuff that we're doing within our organization, and also things that I've done in my personal life. I feel that for me though, I go back and evaluate the why. Why am I selling this? Who am I selling to? Do I enjoy this?”

Par to liecina jaunākais Oglekļa dioksīda uztveršanas ziņojums, ko šogad izstrādā Oksfordas universitātes pētnieki. Cilvēce ik gadu saražo ap 40 miljardu tonnu oglekļa dioksīda, galvenokārt dedzinot fosilos kurināmos. Pasaulē ik gadu no atmosfēras savāc aptuveni 2 miljardus tonnu CO2, taču, lai sasniegtu Parīzes nolīgumā minētos mērķus, nepieciešams savākt krietni vairāk - 7 miljardus. Katra no šīm skaņām vokāli atšķiras. Ar mašīnmācīšanās palīdzību pētnieki ievāca ap 469 sasveicināšanās un sasaukšanās skaņu, kuras raidīja ziloņu mātītes, un fiksēja gan saucējas, gan saucienu saņēmējus. Tad pētnieki eksperimentā atskaņoja visas šīs skaņas 17 ziloņiem un bija pārsteigti par rezultātiem - katrs zilonis atsaucās uz savu konkrēto “vārdu” jeb skaņu.

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack teach you how to use the present simple tense correctly.Transcript:00:00:52JackLike, what's your daily routine?00:00:55XochitlYeah, I I think it's. I think it's interesting because we because we, well, I'll tell my daily routine and we can break it out from there, but let's say.00:01:06XochitlI wake up at 8:00 in the morning. I eat breakfast, I brush my teeth.00:01:15XochitlAnd then I get ready for work. Jack, what do you do in the morning?00:01:19JackI get up at 7:00 in the morning. I brush my teeth first.00:01:27JackI've I've gotten into that practice recently.00:01:30XochitlThat's interesting. There's like the debate, and we'll have to make that a topic.00:01:33XochitlAnother time, but I mean I mean.00:01:34JackYeah. Yeah. Do you brush your teeth before you eat breakfast, or do you brush your teeth after you?00:01:39JackFirst umm. So I brush my teeth, I wash my face. I I get dressed and then I go to work. I I teach at my university. I eat lunch. I teach a little bit more. I go home, I eat dinner. I watch Netflix with my wife and then I go to bed.00:01:59JackAnd so that's my daily routine. Now, I think where students get confused about what we're talking about here is we're not talking about today.00:02:09JackWe're talking about.00:02:11JackEverything. Yeah. Yeah. So things that we did in the past, things that we do now and things that we most likely will do in the future, like I don't see my routine changing anytime soon.00:02:11XochitlEvery day.00:02:28JackAnd so, because it's a habitual thing.00:02:33JackWe we would put that in, we would use the present simple tense to to describe that.00:02:39JackAnd I think it's the easiest. Like grammatically it's the easiest of the tenses because there's only really one rule that you have to remember. And that's when you use **, *** or it as the subject. What happens to the verb when you when you change it to like he or she.00:02:59XochitlYou add that S on the end because you're saying he brushes. She brushes they well. You you change it slightly for brushing teeth. You know, I brush my teeth versus ** *** brushes.00:03:13XochitlThey're here. I'm OK, Jack. I'm gonna let you take over because I'm getting.00:03:17JackNo, no, no. I know exactly what you're saying. So you like? Yeah. So if we use the subjects I, you, we, they you would say like I brush my teeth, we brush our teeth, it brushes its teeth. Although I don't know what that means.00:03:34XochitlThey brush their teeth.00:03:34JackOr they brush their teeth. But if you use he or she so he brushes his teeth, he gets up, you add an S there he washes his face, he goes to work. Yeah.00:03:46XochitlStop.00:03:50XochitlHe watches Netflix, he eats dinner.00:03:54XochitlShe.00:03:55XochitlTakes hour, so it just kind of changes a little bit.00:03:59JackYeah, we call that a inflection, A verb inflection where basically the verb changes a little bit and the inflection is just with an S or an ES. What about study? How would you change that to the present? Simple.00:04:19XochitlUMI study every day or ** *** studies every day. So you change the Y to IES.00:04:25JackRight. So.00:04:28JackThere you go. Yep, Y becomes IES. What about the verb have?00:04:35JackI have breakfast.00:04:37JackShe or he, what would you use there?00:04:37XochitlUh.00:04:39XochitlHas has she? He has breakfast.00:04:43JackA common mistake that some you know beginners will make is that they'll UM.00:04:47JackOver generalize the rule so they'll say haves like HAVES but we but that one's an irregular 1, so we have to use has and so they'll just be careful with the verb have when it's with using he or she we use has and.00:04:51XochitlYeah.00:05:07JackThat's that one. You just have to memorize. There's just a couple of of strange ones like that.00:05:14JackYeah.00:05:15XochitlYeah. All right, listeners, I think this one is a pretty simple one. Register for the Women in Sales Leadership Development programs here. Today's show featured an interview with Lori Richardson from Score More Sales and Women Sales Pros. It also featured Institute for Excellence in Sales Women in Sales Program Director Gina Stracuzzi. LORI'S ADVICE: " Listen in your meetings and make sure that people are speaking up that might be sitting quietly. Just say, “We haven't heard from you. What are your thoughts?” Then just ask individually, “How are we doing with women in sales here? What's missing? What could I do better?” Don't assume that just because you have a number of women on your team that you're all set, because there may be things that you could do and improve on.?" GINA'S ADVICE: "Investing in the professional development of all your employees really, is critical. A lot of companies will tell you, first thing out of the gate is, “We have a lot of internal resources, they have access to all kinds of programs.” When you ask them, “Well, how many people actually avail themselves at those? Is it a safe space if it's live? Do they feel like they can talk about what's of concern to them, or their fears, or their career aspirations? Usually the answer, if people are being honest, is no. Find outside resources, such as the IES to fill those gaps."
In this episode, Jess and Sara reckon with what the preregistration revolution means in developmental science. We first visited preregistration and registered reports in Season 3. Since then, we've been a part of many preregistrations and registered reports, and have reviewed and handled them as editors. Through that process, we've noticed that questions often come up about whether something is really a preregistration and whether some studies or analyses can or should be preregistered. We mention: Several definitions: Open Science Framework: “Preregistration is the practice of documenting your research plan at the beginning of your study and storing that plan in a read-only public repository”. APA: “Preregistration allows researchers to specify and share the details of their research in a public registry before conducting the study.” IES - no definition, just that you should do it; it's part of the SEER standards. REES similarly just says “REES is designed to increase transparency of and access to information about both ongoing and completed efficacy and effectiveness studies.” Even the preregistration revolution article doesn't include a definition. The closest it gets (about ⅓ of the way through the article is “Preregistration of an analysis plan is committing to analytic steps without advance knowledge of the research outcomes.” Paper about preregistering exploratory analyses: Compares it to a funded sea voyage: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7098547/ Connect with the podcast on twitter @within_between, or email us letters about developmental science at withinandbetweenpod@gmail.com.
