In this continuation of their conversation, Dr. Dru Johnson speaks with Rabbi Dr. Shai Held about the themes explored in his book, Judaism is About Love. The discussion delves into the complexities of love, law, and chosenness within Jewish thought, offering a profound perspective on the relationship between particularity and universalism. Rabbi Held addresses the idea of divine chosenness, emphasizing that God's love for Israel is unique but not exclusive. He critiques modern rejections of chosenness as caricatured and argues for a theology that balances grace with humility. Rabbi Held also explores the tension between loving one's own and extending love universally. He describes Judaism's “particularist universalism,” where love for one's family and community naturally expands to encompass all humanity as bearers of God's image. The conversation turns to the ethics of love, including the challenges of enemy love and the discernment required to navigate complex relationships. Rabbi Held shares deeply personal stories that illustrate the real-life implications of these ideas, demonstrating how love can be both demanding and transformative. In this special episode, Dr. Dru Johnson interviews Rabbi Dr. Shai Held, president and dean of the Hadar Institute, about his book, Judaism is About Love. The conversation explores the intricate relationship between love and law in Judaism, offering insights for both Jewish and Christian audiences. Rabbi Held emphasizes that, in Judaism, law is not opposed to love but serves as its manifestation, challenging the common dichotomy in some Christian traditions. He highlights the centrality of love in Jewish rituals and commandments, portraying them as pathways to cultivate love for God and others. Through examples like the Torah's command to love the stranger and the ritual practice of gratitude, Rabbi Held illustrates how Jewish thought integrates love into every aspect of life. The episode also delves into Rabbi Held's methodology, blending traditional Jewish interpretations with modern academic approaches. He discusses his book's aim to present Jewish spirituality in an accessible yet deeply reflective way. Can you remember a time in your life when people that you loved, treated you in a way that didn't “feel” loving?o  How did you respond? The story of the death and resurrection of Lazarus is one of the most powerful in the Bible!o  But there's more to the story and first meets the eye. This passage deals with two things that people experience everyday:§ The fact that Jesus loves us.§ And the fact that we often don't understand that love, in the moment!John 11:5-8o  Now Jesus LOVED Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard Lazarus was ill, He STAYED two days long in the place that He was. Then after this, He said to His disciples; Let us go to Judea again. And the disciples said; “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you and you want to go back there again?”§ On the surface, Jesus' behavior did NOT seem loving, but to the disciples, it at least seemed logical. Going to Lazarus would have been dangerous!·      Neither of those things was true, however! He WAS being loving and there was nothing to FEAR!o     They just didn't understand. Are you willing to trust Jesus, believing that He loves you? And are you willing to follow Him, wherever He may lead?!o  That's exactly what He's asking of each of us every day! Message: “Understanding Love” Scripture: John 11:1-16 Simple. Authentic. So... what is this "Great Awakening" we are hearing so much about? Friends, you know we always go DEEP on this show but today we go even deeper! Each of the above questions, and more, are thoughtfully pondered, debated and answered in today's provoking conversation. My guest, James Tunney, is a living mystic and a prolific painter, poet and author and a leader in the AI and globalism space. We have a fascinating and extremely important conversation about the state of the world, globalism, the insidious shadows that apparently are behind the curtain drawing the strings and, most importantly (!), the strength of the human soul to resist evil and hold steadfast in the face of spiritual warfare. So let's all put on our Big Girl and Boy Pants and courageously dive in so we can be part of the solution to protect our freedom, our autonomy and our beautiful planet! As James shares: "My non-academic writing is in a wide range of categories, both fiction and non-fiction but although the range might appear wide in its scope, they are all linked by two themes. The first is the idea that individuals are primarily spiritual beings that must evolve and be spiritually self-aware of the nature of consciousness. The second issue flowing therefrom is this: the individual must recognize that they are prey to forces which seek to dispirit them and control their consciousness. My books are all united in their concern for the primacy of individual spiritual freedom of the human person and the threat of our destruction and deconstruction by the scientocracy." Please check out James's amazing art, books, poetry and more can be found at jamestunney.com For more conversations on freedom, connecting to spirit, facing fear, exploring the subconscious and spiritually developing through love, check out these fantastic fan-favorite episodes: 155.
