Spring Breakers (movie 2012) Jules’ pick is the most commercial work from Writer-Director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy). This look at the drugs and debauchery of Florida over spring break plays with time and structure to evoke a drug fueled conception of reality. The cast are made up of Harnony’s wife and three Disney-star level actresses, plus James Franco. The colors and tone are all over the top. A fun romp and maybe not the best Korine flick, but a standout for its budget and cast. You can stream on Showtime or purchase on Amazon and iTunes. Where to start with this one? If anyone's familiar with the work of former "enfant terrible" Harmony Korine (do we call him now 'Adult terrible?'), then you know the wild, manic, tragic, gross, idiotic, perverse and often comic vignettes that populate films such as Gummo, Mister Lonely, and Spring-Breakers. He's an artist in the sense of, as director Werner Herzog would say, a "soldier of cinema", making a new f***ed up sandbox to play in. And Julien Donkey-Boy, his "Dogme 95" entry (listen to know what that was all about), is among his most outrageous, sad and ambitious efforts, also featuring Mr. Herzog in a performance for the ages. Harmony Korine sometimes comes across as nervous or downright bizarre in his interviews with the press, but he was refreshingly candid in this interview with Monica Castillo about his new film Spring Breakers. She asked him about the technical side of the film, working with James Franco and Selena Gomez, and just what he's hoping people take away from it. Spoiler: if you came out of the theater feeling like you dropped acid, that was probably intentional. He first earned acclaim as the screenwriter of Larry Clark's controversial film Kids in 1994. He has directed the films Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers, among others. In 1998, he published the novel "A Crack Up At The Race Riots." An interview with HARMONY KORINE the director of MISTER LONELY the story of a young American in Paris who works as a Michael Jackson lookalike. Michael Jackson meets meets Marilyn Monroe, who invites him to her commune in Scotland, where she lives with Charlie Chaplin and her daughter, Shirley Temple. In 1995, at the age of 19, Korine wrote the critically acclaimed screenplay Kids for director Larry Clark. Following his fame with Kids, Korine directed the beautifully jarring unconventional films Gummo (1997) starring Werner Herzog followed by Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) which was based on the experiences of Korine's schizophrenic uncle. Christened "the future of American cinema" by Herzog, Korine is the son of documentary filmmaker Sol Korine.
