4X4: HARMONY KORINE PT. 2 OF 2: HARM FLORIDA  LOOK AT MY SHIT  FLORIDA MAN, SHARK, WOMEN, ALIEN  SPRING BREAKERS & THE BEACH BUM  Spr-ee-ee-ee-ing Br-ea-ea-ea-ea-k. The three little chickies hatching this week's mayhem are not your regular indica blend of calm when host Ken taps out and frequent guest to the show Ryan, the original Arizona Man, rejoins Jack and a well(whisky)-hung(over) Thomas to discuss Harmony Korine's Florida duology (SPRINGBREAKERS and BEACH BUM). In an episode originally intended to litigate Ryan's Letterboxd review of previous episode's Julien Donkey-Boy, the tables turn like in kitchen wrestling when Ryan slips out Jack's hug & Thomas' chokehold to pin both to the courtroom's mat when he uncovers during the episode Jack and Thomas' stark disagreement on the merits of Korine's two most recent works. Also, bonus lessons from Ryan's big galaxy brain on American desegregation history and Florida geography.Discover the lyricism of SPRING BREAKERS (2012/2013), edited and scored for what Harmony calls his “liquid narrative,” the film that earned more in its opening weekend than all previous Korine films' total box offices combined. Listen as Jack complains about the film that earned more in its opening weekend than all previous Korine films' total box offices combined's repetitiveness while Thomas defends its structure, excesses, and the repetitive “liquid narrative” against Jack's complaints about the editing and repetitiveness of this first of two Korine films with Korine's Florida aesthetic on full display in these two Florida films shot on location in Florida by Belgian cinematographer Benoît Debie, best known for his work on features including Irréversible (2002) and, as mentioned in the show, Enter the Void (2009). Afterwards, chill not with Gary Oldman for whom the script was written but Matthew McConaughey, man, as Moondog for our final Korine 4x4 film THE BEACH BUM (2019) as this blocked poet plagiarist gets (pot/Parrot)head-y in the Florida Keys. Speaking of head, observe a new spiritual level of love and stoned cunnilingus between Moondog and exorbitantly wealthy wife Minnie, played Isla Fisher, as they reconcile. Chill with triple-threats Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. and James William Buffett--playing, respectively, Snoop Dogg as Lingerie and Jimmy Buffet as himself--along with a cast of half-dozens, including WTF live-action cartoon performances by Jonah Hill and Martin Lawrence, on the way to (entitle/enlighten)ment. Layering of images and sound and little rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo-doo-la-doo-la-doo and blurring the line between script and fiction and the lives of those the camera normally doesn't see and sure, sure, nothing new for trash like you. JULIEN DONKEY-BOY – Invited to make the first film in the U.S. under Dogme 95 rules (which it'd break and be the second American film to do so), Korine chose to induce schizophrenia in viewers through digital cameras, editing, and a titular character based on his uncle who would have been cast in the film but failed to receive institutional release. With blind ice skaters, armless drummer, and a cast of non-professional actors, this film in 2022 remains ranked in the Top 20 films of all times starring a Black albino straight from Alabama. Plus, Werner Herzog as Julien's father holds court at the dinner table, recounting a scene from Dirty Harry. Sit back with a brown paper bag of your favorite brand of huffing glue (or vintage cough syrup and house slipper if that's your poison) and enjoy the careening visual lyricism that is Harmony.(episode write-up by Thomas)THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

Spring Breakers (movie 2012) Jules’ pick is the most commercial work from Writer-Director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy). This look at the drugs and debauchery of Florida over spring break plays with time and structure to evoke a drug fueled conception of reality. The cast are made up of Harnony’s wife and three Disney-star level actresses, plus James Franco. The colors and tone are all over the top. Where to start with this one? If anyone's familiar with the work of former "enfant terrible" Harmony Korine (do we call him now 'Adult terrible?'), then you know the wild, manic, tragic, gross, idiotic, perverse and often comic vignettes that populate films such as Gummo, Mister Lonely, and Spring-Breakers. He's an artist in the sense of, as director Werner Herzog would say, a "soldier of cinema", making a new f***ed up sandbox to play in. And Julien Donkey-Boy, his "Dogme 95" entry (listen to know what that was all about), is among his most outrageous, sad and ambitious efforts, also featuring Mr. Herzog in a performance for the ages. What is there to see here in five viewings? Harmony Korine sometimes comes across as nervous or downright bizarre in his interviews with the press, but he was refreshingly candid in this interview with Monica Castillo about his new film Spring Breakers. She asked him about the technical side of the film, working with James Franco and Selena Gomez, and just what he's hoping people take away from it. Spoiler: if you came out of the theater feeling like you dropped acid, that was probably intentional. SHOW NOTES: About Our Guest: Harmony Korine is a filmmaker and author whose movies are often characterized by their non-linear, experimental form and shocking content. He first earned acclaim as the screenwriter of Larry Clark's controversial film Kids in 1994. He has directed the films Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers, among others. In 1998, he published the novel "A Crack Up At The Race Riots." The Episode: 0:26 - Introduction and clip 2:52 - What attracted you to the spring break phenomenon? 4:10 - You chose to film at St. Pete Beach in Tampa. Of all the beaches in Florida, why did you choose to film there? 5:10 - Your use of lighting blew my mind. It's very saturated and there are several bright hues. How did you achieve that effect? 6:35 - You don't tell the story entirely linearly. Did you make that decision at the beginning or in post-production? 7:40 - Did you always know that Britney Spears song would be featured? 8:15 - How did you get James Franco and Selena Gomez to join the project? 9:52 - Did you have to cut anything to get an R rating? 10:39 - There's a lot of humor in the movie. How did you find the balance between comedy and the darker subject matter? 11:37 - How did you maintain control on set with all this chaos happening around you? 12:12 - How long was the shoot and what was it like to work with your wife? 13:14 - There are lots of repeated lines and motifs. Why did you choose to do that? 14:00 - Your film covers a lot of heavy themes but neither celebrates nor condemns the behavior. Were you trying to reflect culture back at the audience rather than comment on it? 16:04 - Are you looking to do more "popsploitation" movies? 16:45 - A lot of people who see this film will be unfamiliar with your previous work. What are you hoping they take away from the movie? 17:33 - What was the biggest challenge in making this movie? 18:25 - Show close DON'T FORGET: You can contact us by emailing letsgetreel@filmgeekradio.com.
