The movie you're making me watch today is The Hunt (2012), a gut-punching Danish drama directed by Thomas Vinterberg that'll leave you questioning everything about truth, trust, and mob mentality. Starring Mads Mikkelsen in a raw, heart-shattering performance as Lucas, a kindergarten teacher whose life unravels when a child's innocent lie sparks accusations of abuse, this film dives deep into the chaos of a tight-knit community turning on one of its own. Vinterberg, the Dogme 95 rebel behind Festen, crafts a chilling, no-holds-barred look at how fear and gossip can spiral into a modern-day witch hunt. Join us as we unpack Mikkelsen's Cannes-winning intensity, the film's haunting visuals, and why this Oscar-nominated thriller still hits like a freight train.

HEY EVERYONE! Corbin and Matt are starting a new series! It's called Digital Frontiers: Digital Cinema From 1998-2011, and it's about the movies' transition to digital as a primary medium, as seen in the movies that took the first steps forward. We are excited for you to join us on this journey, seeking answers to the eternal present question: "hey, why do movies look like that now?"  Our first episode is about "Festen," ('The Celebration,' in English), The first certified Dogme 95 movie and an absolute banger. Topics include: the weird little camera they made it with and the heights of emotional intensity it archives, the family as a model for society, the usefulness of digital artifacts in creating an aesthetic, and skateboarding videos.  Matt recommends some reading on digital cinema here. Corbin recommends Monster Hunter. Also of note for this episode, C. Claire Thompson's monograph on "Festen," available on University of Washington Prss (or a library of some sort, it's pretty expensive)! Next week's episode is about "Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones." There is a chance you've seen it but if not it's on Disney+.

Send us a textBOSS OF IT ALL (2006)Well, as the famous playwright Antonio Gambini once wrote: All good things (and Season 13 of TGTPTU) must come to a close. And what better stage for which our four hosts to give their final thoughts and review of the four directors covered this 4x4 season, as well as their general opinions of Lars von Trier, than with LvT's office comedy THE BOSS OF IT ALL (2006)? (Sorry, we can't hear you response. This isn't a radio show, and you're not live on the air and it was a rhetorical question as The House that Jack Built would have been better, your author of the Show Notes knows, but the movie was banned from discussion by the TGTPTU's boss of it all.) Before LvT's crippling depression set in (see previous episode covering 2009's Antichrist), while mainly dealing with anxiety, and in-between his second and still unmade third installment of his America Trilogy, the enfant terrible and Cannes darling challenged himself with a genre he'd yet to, and hasn't returned to, film: a comedy. While edited using his Dogme 95-influenced time-cut style, instead of hand-held camerawork by LvT himself The Boss of It All was another- first-and-only for the filmmaker in using Automavision. This LvT invented technique let a computer decide focus and movement as replacement for a cameraperson. Allowing the blame to be put on the computer instead of himself, LvT symbolically repeats the conceit of his comedy where the character of Ravn hires an amateur actor and playwright Gambini stan Kristoffer, played by Jens Albinus (mentioned previous ep), to pretend to be The Boss of It All, an absentee owner that Ravn created to pretend he did not own the company and to shunt unpopular decisions but now needs Kristoffer to pretend to be in order to sell the company. Hilarity ensues.    Join the fearsome foursome for their collective explorations of neoliberal capitalism while, individually, Ken predicts beyond the new year into the near future by betting LvT has sent drones back in time to shoot the comedy that will be Year 2025; Thomas nearly learns Danish; Ryan reveals he hates the look of a $20k engine inside a Datsun; and Jack stays awake for the entire film.  And keep listening past the wrap of our fourth movie by our fourth director to enjoy a surprise visit from a musical guest--the Boss himself--who introduces hosts' LvT four-film rankings and Season 13 reflections.THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @mrkoral.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

LARS VON TRIER #3: NATURE SPURTS WITH "ANTICHRIST"

The Good, The Pod and The Ugly

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2025 64:43

Send us a text4X4: Lars von Trier #3Breaking our own arbitrary rules just like Lars von Trier, the enfant terrible final director of Season 13's 4x4, the TGTPTU crew for our final pairing breaks with release date order to review the later paired film earlier, giving you this week ANTICHRIST (2009).  From the throes of depression, LVT emerged to sink the world into his vision of grief, anxiety, and madness with the horror story of a couple (played by Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg), their gendered power dynamics, and a totally normal depiction of married sex life. Not only are these two main husband-wife characters unnamed (something host Jack hates), with the exception their child who won't survive the movie's Prologue, all other characters are extras who appear with faces blurred, maintaining the isolation and focus on the archetypes of a controlling male and a woman who cannot find herself in the narratives of motherhood. Or, that's one interpretation of many readings Antichrist allows as it questions, potentially: whether human nature is good or evil, if there is a different nature for women than men, how nature influences nurture, and if nature itself can be framed in terms of good or evil. Also left to questioning: the crew on this film as to whether LVT would finish the movie as his struggle with depression persisted. But what is not open to question is how visually arresting the film is. In combination with the Dogme 95-inspired handheld camerawork complemented by the time-cut style discussed last episode with Dancer in the Dark (also with no preproduction rehearsals for actors), LVT introduces two visual styles new to his filmography. The first, shot in a repetitive extreme close-ups, is a sequence reminiscent of Aronofsky's hip-hop montage (see Season 11) and 2024's Cuckoo (see future Season 19 Singer vs. Singer) that captures the feelings of anxiety experienced, initially, by the wife. The second stylist tone, and the one that opens the tragedy of their neglected child falling from a window while they are having black-and-white penetrative sex, uses high resolution slow motion for gorgeously crisp imagery that later is repeated but spectrally layered as if in a dream. From the hosts this week: Thomas demonstrates effectively totally knows what sex is; Ryan goes Cartesian; Jack receives a visit from the Sight and Sound people about putting Audition on his list; and Ken is a grump who wants LA to burn to the ground. Join one pair of hosts in praising the film or perhaps pose the question as a reporter for the Daily Mail did at Cannes (available on the Blu-ray) to LVT: “Would you please, for my benefit, explain and justify why you made this movie?”  What does it really matter? Chaos reigns.  Content Note: While a forest retreat where Dafoe's character discovers a mommy deer, a helpful crow, and a talking fox might sound like a family-friend animated film, the genital mutilation in the film definitely veers toward adult content. So CONTENT WARNING: while you might enjoy this film as two TGTPTU hosts did, you're not going to leave this film content.  Final Note: At the release of this episode (late-January 2025), Bob's Big Boy in LA has been booked solid and the front of the building covered with flowers, but at the time of this episode's recording David Lynch had yet to slip into the ether. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @mrkoral.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Rya

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

We're doing a double shot this week for our overarching, year long theme called “A DREARY YEAR OF LARS VON TRIER”. Doubling down because it may be a few months before we get back into good ‘ol Lars so what better way to lead into a May loaded with Space Fantasy than with a movie about a group of people in Denmark embarking on a social experiment by going out into everyday society and pretending to be mentally challenged? A quiet woman named Karen finds herself roped into this strange group. Karen questions the morality of behaving in such a way but Karen has also found a sense of joy and belonging with the group. Is this an anti-bourgeois act that transcends the quiet oppressions of a “civilized society” or is it all just one big goddamn joke? Lars von Trier's contribution to the Dogme 95 manifesto, “THE IDIOTS” (or “IDIOTERNE” if you're nasty) from 1998 is #2 in the Dogme series and though we keep saying this…this one has definitely gotta be Lars von Trier's most light hearted film. We feel pretty confident about the claim this time. Lot's of nudity and some fucking. Just reporting that for you Mr. Skin types out there. This month we're just wild about Siobhan Fallon Hogan. You Might Know Her From Men In Black, Forrest Gump, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, The House That Jack Built, Shelter in Solitude, Rushed, Holes, Seinfeld, and Saturday Night Live.  Siobhan gave us all the goods: from iconic dialect work in your favorite movies to her years-long collaborations with Lars von Trier. Siobhan spilled on doing bits while performing in Shakespeare in the Park, having fart competitions with Ben Gazzara on the set of Dogville, and getting horrifically killed by Matt Dillon in The House That Jack Built. We also got to talk about her turn as a screenwriter of two indie films: Rushed and Shelter in Solitude (both avail to stream now), and how her Catholic values inform all her work. A true delight from start to finish! Just feel better knowing that Lauren Bacall once asked, “Will we ever work again?” and know you are not alone! Love you mean it!  Also, please note we recorded this before we both texted each other “O.J. Simpson is dead!” so yeah, O.J. Simpson is dead and maybe we conjured it by talking about his acting and prison work.  Patreon: www.patreon.com/youmightknowherfrom Follow us on social media: @youmightknowherfrom || @damianbellino || @rodemanne Discussed this episode: Earthquake in NYC Anne loves disaster films: The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Airport The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, Daylight  Should we do a disaster movie watch on Patreon? Siobhan's famous scene in Men in Black Was Phoebe in Shakespeare in the Park's As You Like It with Nancy Hower and Viola Davis. Directed by Adrian Hall Appears in 3 of Lars von Trier's movies: Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, and The House That Jack Built He created a style of filmmaking called Dogme 95, where no director is credited, handheld, 35mm, etc. Wrote and directed two movies, Rushed and Shelter in Solitude  Appeared in Michael Haneke's Funny Games, which fucked Anne up Became friends with Lauren Bacall on the set of Dogville Matt Dillon kills her horrifically in The House That Jack Built Siobhan is a very serious Irish Catholic, and that informs all of her film choices.  She got a rubber suit made of her body so it could be dragged behind a truck Wrote solo shows for herself to get more work Went to Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY Siobhan was on SNL the 1991-92 season. Delta Delta Delta SNL sketch w/ former guest of this show, Melanie Hutsell Siobhan good friends with former SNLers, Chris Farley and Ellen Cleghorne Roseanne Arnold and Tom Arnold were decent SNL hosts, Jason Priestley sweet, Sharon Stone didn't get it Siobhan on 3 classic episodes of Seinfeld as Elaine's roommate How did Siobhan not get cast as Mark Wahlberg's sister in The Fighter? Bernie Mac put on fake teeth to go into hiding during filming of What's the Worst That Could Happen? Plays Henry Winkler's husband in Holes Played secretary in The Paper, Golden Girls, The Bounty Hunter, New in Town Appeared in a film from the genre Anne calls, “Men's Coming of Death.” This one was titled Going in Style, directed by Zach Braff Would cast Lily Tomlin, Diane Keaton, Shirley MacLaine in her own Women's Coming of Death

We're back in the dark reaches of a pessimistic and aggressive portrayal of the world's "most beautiful place": Scotland. In Ryan's words, it can be a terrifying place. Andrea Arnold's slice of Cinema Verité inspired by the Dogme 95 aesthetic and film movement, really puts you in a scary place that is equally horrifying and mesmerizing. As a counterpoint to the last film we covered, this is also a film about watching people, innocently enough through the eyes of a CCTV operator, but how, through this character's trauma, how that power is easily manipulated for her personal gain. This is a fascinating piece of cinema and one of the strongest debuts from a first-time director. Enjoy this incredibly dark and uncompromising film at your own peril but you won't be disappointed.

At long last, IndieSeen returns! Ian welcomes back filmmaker/indie film guru Sujewa Ekanayake for an education in real-time, as they review Chetzemoka's Curse and talk Dogme 95!Rick Schmidt's 2000 feature film centers on Marie (Maya Berthoud), a struggling hotel worker living in the Pacific Northwest whose ambitions and love life remain stuck in neutral. No, this isn't the setup of a cutesy rom-com; it's the doorway to a haunting portrait of damaged souls trapped within the legacy of a Native American curse (think Stephen King by way of Richard Linklater).Ian and Sujewa look at how the film conforms to (and breaks away from) the ten rules of Dogme 95, a bold filmmaking edict set forth by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg as a challenge to artists everywhere. Ian ranks Chetzemoka's Curse as one of the most unsettling and unique stealth-horror films he's ever seen, and Sujewa catches everyone up on all his moviemaking adventures from the last half-year!Timestamps:Intro / Sujewa Catch-up: 0:00 - 10:00History of Dogme 95: 10:01 - 25:31The Rules of Dogme 95: 25:32 - 28:13Chetzemoka's Curse Discussion: 28:14 - 56:46Outro: 56:47 - 58:18Show Links:Rent or buy Chetzemoka's Curse on Vimeo.Keep up with Chetzemoka's Curse director Rick Schmidt's work on Vimeo....And order his book, Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Prices on Amazon: Watch Amir Motlagh's 3 Worlds for free on Tubi (mentioned in the show).Watch the trailer for Mati Diop's Atlantics (mentioned in the show).Rent Sujewa's new movie, The Secret Society for Slow Romance.Find clips, making-of videos, and other cool info about Sujewa's upcoming film, The Secret Society for Slow Romance.Follow the production of Sujewa's Slow Romance sequel, Cosmic Disco Rene.Keep up with all of Sujewa's projects.Follow Sujewa on Twitter.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

The Next Reel Film Podcast Master Feed

It's clear from our two films in our current series that Susanne Bier enjoys films with complex characters dealing with complex situations. Open Hearts had two families whose lives are upturned after a car accident affects both of them. In After the Wedding, it's a revealing toast at the wedding that turns lives upside down and forces several people to reevaluate their connections to each other. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Mads & Susanne series with her 2006 film After the Wedding. We have a lot of thoughts about After the Wedding. This is a film dealing in a mess of a situation but somehow avoids melodramatic, false emotions. Crafting a story like that isn't easy, but Bier manages it and delivers a powerful film here. The performances of Mads Mikkelsen, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rolf Lassgård, and Stine Fischer Christensen are spot-on perfect, but it's the script and direction that keeps the story believable. And that's with a story that has several large reveals that in any other film would be signs of it being over-the-top. But not here. Bier allows the characters to learn the information then react to it as people would. It's powerful how effective it is. It feels as if Bier learned a lot about connecting to her characters with her work in the Dogme 95 style, and even though she's not operating under their rules here, it still shows she understands the core principals of being honest. There's a lot to be discussed about how wealth affects and shapes Jorgen's thinking, not to mention how he treats his family. There are also elements of altruism reflected throughout. How does that come up with the characters and their intentions? It's a powerful film and one we're glad to cover on the show. So check it out then tune in. Ep. 111: Transcendental Magick

In this episode, we turn back the clock 170 years, and revisit what is perhaps THE great foundational text of magick of the 19th and 20th century - Transcendental Magick, by the French magus Éliphas Lévi. Éliphas Lévi Zahed, born Alphonse Louis Constant (8 February 1810 – 31 May 1875), was a French esotericist, poet, and author of more than 20 books on magic, Kabbalah, alchemical studies, and occultism. He pursued an ecclesiastical career in the Catholic Church until, after great personal struggle, at the age of 26, he abandoned the Roman Catholic priesthood. At the age of 40, he began professing knowledge of the occult, and becoming a reputed ceremonial magician. The pen name "Éliphas Lévi", was a transliteration of his given names "Alphonse Louis" into the Hebrew. Levi gained renown as an original thinker and writer. His works attracted the attention of the heterogeneous ambiences of the era in Paris and London; from esotericists to artists of romantic or symbolist inspiration. He also expressed his independence by leaving the Masonic lodge of the "Great Orient", believing that it was a form of modern secularization, where knowledge of the original meanings of symbols and rituals was lost. "I ceased being a freemason, at once, because the Freemasons, excommunicated by the Pope, did not believe in tolerating Catholicism." Many authors influenced Levi's political, occultic and literary development, such as the French monarchist Joseph de Maistre, whom he quotes in many parts of his Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, Paracelsus, Robert Fludd, Swedenborg, Fabre d'Olivet, the Rosicrucians, Plato, Raymond Lull, and other esoterics.
