The fourth-most-popular entertainment news podcast in The Gambia returns this week with a great dog days of summer episode. First up, host Neal Pollack welcomes Sharyn Vane for another important eat-your-veggies segment. Apparently, the literary world has decided that apolitical writer Gabrielle Zevin, author of the bestselling 'Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow' is a "Zionist" because her novel features an Israel character and she once gave an interview to Hadassah magazine. This is annoying at the least, and quite dangerous at the most, and Book and Film Globe will continue to stand strong against forces in the literary world that insist on marginalizing and discriminating against Jewish authors. We should be long past this as a society. But we are not long past M. Night Shyamalan movies, and JonPaul Guinn joins our Rotten Tomatoes-approved editor-in-chief to discuss M. Night's wacky new locked-room serial-killer movie 'Trap,' which is almost a comedy, and is quite a lot of fun. JP way prefers Trap to Longlegs, and both he and Neal way prefer it to the previous Shyamalan movie A Knock At The Cabin, which collapsed under the weight of its own pretentiousness. There's nothing pretentious about Trap, it's fun. You will have fun. Have fun at it.There's also nothing pretentious about the Apple+ TV adaptation of Time Bandits, though Scott Gold, our resident Time Bandits effort, admits that showrunners Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement lack the artistry of Terry Gilliam, who made the original Time Bandits. But for men of a certain age, which Scott and Neal most definitely are, a Time Bandits reboot is nostalgic catnip. Scott says the show is funny, if not a surrealist masterpiece like the original. A little warm glow of time-traveling nostalgia. No pop-culture product ever really dies, and the new Time Bandits is no exception.Enjoy the show!

Night Shyamalan and his breakout feature, The Sixth Sense. Now somehwat underrated in Shyamalan's impressive oeuvre, even and especially by M. Night die-hards, the film is a patient, startling, and deeply human ghost story that also functions as gorgeous melodrama, introducing Shyamalan's career-long pet themes of parenthood, familial reconciliation, the beauty of otherness, and the power of love as a shelter from the terrors of modernity. A critical and commercial hit, The Sixth Sense became the second-highest grossing film of the extremely stacked 1999 box office (behind only Star Wars Episode I), and netted six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. We discuss the career of M Night Shyamalan, its peaks and valleys, and how his vision as an artist often places him at odds with cultural and critical trends. Then, we discuss the phenomenon that was/is The Sixth Sense, and how its power stems from far more than just its (very good) shocking twist ending. Finally, we discuss the filmmaker's singular humanity, and how his films reflect form and function aligning with profoundly personal vision, resulting in truly peerless work. Then, it's time for some TRAP talk, as we give our initial thoughts on Shyamalan's latest film TRAP, now in theaters. We discuss the incredible work of Josh Hartnett as a serial killer evading capture at a pop concert, the gorgeous cinematography from Thai visionary Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and the film's many narrative surprises (some more effective than others).Follow Juan Barquin on Twitter.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Episode 79. In today's episode, Meredith and Kaity talk about two M Night Shyamalan movies - The Village and Knock at the Cabin. They go in-depth about the all-star cast of the Village and discuss the twist at the end of the film despite not being well received. They also talk about how different Knock at the Cabin is compared to films written by Shyamalan, since it wasn't actually written by him. Kaity and Meredith also give their non-expert opinion on what age is appropriate to show this movie to kids. Intro and Outro music by the talented A Corten and art provided by Javon Blair.

Margarine Knight Shamalam released a film in 2023 that went pretty much unnoticed thanks to past projects like The Happening, The Lady In The Water and The Golden Girls: Resurrected, but thanks to Ali's vigilance, KNOCK AT THE CABIN has blipped on the Film Guff radar.Could this be a symptom of cabin fever or cabin holidays? With limited access to the outside world, the family must decide what they believe before all is lost.M. In the horror film Knock at the Cabin, a gay couple and their young daughter are vacationing at a remote cabin when four strangers arrive and take them hostage. They are told the only thing that will prevent the apocalypse is if one of the family members willingly sacrifices his or her life. The film is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with a cast that includes Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, and more.
M. Night Shyamalan is on the short list of big-budget filmmakers who reliably bring original stories to the multiplex, which means that enthusiasm for his new work can be somewhat out of step with his recent track record. But with their Top 5 Shyamalan Moments (01:13), Adam and Josh prove that the director's best work is deserving of close attention. Working with ace collaborators like cinematographers Roger Deakins and Tak Fujimoto, composer James Newton Howard, and actors such as Bruce Willis and Toni Collette, Shyamalan exhibits a gift for patience and craft that - at his best - distinguishes him from his peers. Along with that Top 5, Adam and Josh have an on-air production meeting about next week's Madness '23-inspired show (40:26), shake the dust off for their first Massacre Theatre of the new year (46:21), and share some thoughts on Shyamalan's latest, KNOCK AT THE CABIN (48:59), before returning to the Top 5 (01:07:40).
