In 1941, Emily and Dooky Chase, Sr. opened Dooky Chase Restaurant, a sandwich shop on Orleans Avenue in New Orleans. Five years later, a young girl from Madisonville, Louisiana married Emily and Dooky's son, big band leader Edgar "Dooky" Chase, Jr. Under Leah's leadership, the simple shop grew into one of the first African American fine dining restaurants in the country – the place where Leah Chase established herself as the Queen of Creole Cuisine. Since her passing in 2019, Leah's legacy lies in the hands of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Now, that crew, which Leah always referred to as "the grands," are debuting their own TV series, produced locally by WYES-TV and airing on PBS affiliates throughout the country. For this momentous occasion, we sat down with the younger generations at the restaurant during the taping of "The Dooky Chase Kitchen: Leah's Legacy." On this week's show, we hear not only those young, ambitious voices, but we've dug into our archives to bring you material that never previously aired from the late, great Leah herself. 473. Part 1 of our conversation with Michael Martin & Janet Allured. Part 1. Firsthand Louisiana: Primary Sources in the History of the State brings to its readers a companion to the study of Louisiana's history. Compiled for the first time in a single book, the dozens of important, interesting, devastating, and entertaining firsthand accounts cover Louisiana's history from 1682, when Sieur de La Salle claimed the land for the French, up through recent controversies over the removal of Confederate memorial statues in the state. Read letters, speeches, reports, and diaries to learn how the Bayou State affected and was affected by such events as the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, the Plessy v. Ferguson decision, World War II, the civil rights movement, and more. Edited by experts in the field of Louisiana history, this collection also provides a fascinating read for non-academics who simply want to gain the perspective of the people — women, men, Native Americans, whites, African Americans, and many others — who created the state's complicated past. This week in Louisiana history. June 11, 1744. Louis J. de St. Denis dies in Natchitoches. This week in New Orleans history. “Blood Seeped Under the Door, Down the Steps, and into the Street…” On the corner of Orleans Avenue and Dauphine Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans is a stately three and a half-story mansion that is said to be the site of a massacre so significant that blood flowed from the building and into the street. It is the tale of a mysterious Turkish gentleman, perhaps even the brother of a Sultan, who arrived in New Orleans, threw wild parties, and was then viciously murdered. But is this story true or is it like the city of New Orleans— the product of an ever changing cultural landscape that merges the past and the present; evolving and intersecting with other well known legends like that of Pere Antoine's Date Palm, or The Tree of the Dead. On this week's show, we meet some folks who have moved on to new adventures in their lives. We begin with Chef Steve Himelfarb and his wife Becky Retz. In the summer of 2020, they closed their beloved bakery, the Cake Café, after 13 years of business. But this isn't the first major life change for them. Long before there was a Cake Café, Steve worked solely as a music engineer and producer – doing Grammy-nominated work with artists like Buckwheat Zydeco and Beausoleil. We hear about his career in music and food and learn about the new Cake Café Cookbook. Next, we catch up with Chef Corbin Evan, formerly of Lulu's in Exchange Alley and Lulu’s in the Garden in New Orleans. Today, he owns and operates Oxford Canteen, a highly-acclaimed restaurant in Oxford, Mississippi. Finally, guitarist Pete Murano of Trombone Shorty’s longtime band Orleans Avenue joins us to explain what he has been up to since the pandemic took him and the band off of the road. Suffice it to say that Pete has become one of Instagram's newest cooking stars!

Arthur Hardy, Mardi Gras expert and historian, publishes the annual Mardi Gras Guide. Arthur shares the big news for Carnival 2008: the Krewe of Endymeon's long awaited return to its pre-Katrina Mid-City route. "It sends a message that the police department, if not at full strength, is strong enough to handle the large crowds in Mid-City", Arthur says. And he notes that the pre-parade party and concert on Orleans Avenue are great fun, too. Arthur also talks about "Family Gras" in Metairie on the first weekend of Mardi Gras.
