elle nash is an electrifying writer based in glasgow, scotlandthis is about her book 'deliver me' - At a meatpacking facility in the Missouri Ozarks, Dee-Dee and her co-workers kill and butcher 40,000 chickens in a single shift. The work is repetitive and brutal, with each stab and cut a punishment to her hands and joints, but Dee-Dee's more concerned with what is happening inside her body. After a series of devastating miscarriages, Dee-Dee has found herself pregnant, and she is determined to carry this child to term.Dee-Dee fled the Pentecostal church years ago, but judgment follows her in the form of regular calls from her mother, whose raspy voice urges Dee-Dee to quit living in sin and marry her boyfriend Daddy, an underemployed ex-con with an insect fetish. With a child on the way, at long last Dee-Dee can bask in her mother's and boyfriend's newfound parturient attention. She will matter. She will be loved. She will be complete. When her charismatic friend Sloane reappears after a twenty-year absence, feeding her insecurities and awakening suppressed desires, Dee-Dee fears she will go back to living in the shadows. Hello everyone and welcome to Episode Ninety Nine!  And while we're at it, I hope you all remain safe and healthy out there. This show is dedicated to the memory of Gary Pinson.  Gary lived over in the Missouri Ozarks and every October he and his family would come over to Snake Road in southern Illinois, which is where I first met him.  It got to be a thing every year, meeting up with Gary and his crew, walking and talking on the road.  He was a good man, a gentle man, with a twinkle in his eye and always ready with a story.  I will miss him and so will so many other folks who come down to Snake Road on the regular.  My sympathies to Preston, Gregory, Amy and the rest of the Pinson family – I'm quite sure Gary's at a McDonald's somewhere. As always, I am grateful to all the show's patrons who help to keep the show moving forward. And if you're out there listening and you would like to kick in a few bucks, it's easy to do, you simply go to the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three bucks a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee! You can also support the show via one-time contributions via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). Just prior to heading down to Peru in May, I heard from Devon Graham, who is the director of Project Amazonas. Devon told me our group would be sharing the Santa Cruz field station with some folks doing venom research, and that certainly sounded intriguing, Arriving at Santa Cruz we met with Ella Guedouar, Carter Haley, and Grant McCargar, and we got a peek at the research they were conducting.  A very gracious trio, they were cool with me and Josh and all of his students doing some shoulder surfing as they extracted venom and worked up their serpent subjects.  And they graciously agreed to talk with me about their research. Thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. -Mike

Today I am thrilled to welcome back one of my favorite authors. Elle Nash joins me to talk about her novel Deliver Me (10.3.23 Unnamed Press). Elle is the author of Animals Eat Each Other, Nudes, and Gag Reflex. She has easily become one of Salt Lake Dirt's top picks. Her name has been mentioned by several other guests on this show as one of the best writers out there. I love Deliver Me and I encourage you to (pre-) order today! Elle currently lives in Scotland and will be on a book tour in the States this October. If you can, make sure to check it out! A list of events are at the bottom of this page. Great book, great chat! Thanks for listening. Kyler --- Deliver Me Synopsis: "At a meatpacking facility in the Missouri Ozarks, Dee-Dee and her co-workers kill and butcher 40,000 chickens in a single shift." "The work is repetitive and brutal, with each stab and cut a punishment to her hands and joints, but Dee-Dee's more concerned with what is happening inside her body. After a series of devastating miscarriages, Dee-Dee has found herself pregnant, and she is determined to carry this child to term.  Dee-Dee fled the Pentecostal church years ago, but judgment follows her in the form of regular calls from her mother, whose raspy voice urges Dee-Dee to quit living in sin and marry her boyfriend Daddy, an underemployed ex-con with an insect fetish. Neither the ultimate indignity of yet another miscarriage nor Sloane's own pregnancy deters her: she must prepare for the baby's arrival." The Missouri Ozarks is both home and backdrop to Missouri Arts Council Touring Performer, Mick Byrd. A member of the MO Blues Society and Tennessee Songwriters Association International, Mick has performed at the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville for over 20 years.  An award from Billboard Magazine kicked off his music career in 1994. Mick brings fans an amazing array of original Roots Rock, Country & his signature “Ozark Blues.”  Mick performs solo or with some of his very talented musician friends as a duo or band, creating “The Backroad Band.” Whether in his travels across Missouri, the United States or Ireland, people everywhere find common ground in Mick's music. My personal introduction to Mick Byrd may be the most unique and unusual yet.  A lifelong friend of nearly 50 years and I were talking one day and she surprised me by telling me her 93 year-old mother confessed she had been married to a man before she was married to my friend's father.  His name was Curtis Byrd.   My friend later met Mick Byrd totally by happenstance on the streets of Jefferson City, Missouri as he was setting up for a music gig at a place called Gumbo Bottoms.  She asked are you related to Curtis Byrd?  Why yes, he said…he was my father.   Oh my…she replied.  Your dad was once married to my mother.  Now there's a song in there somewhere.  My friend suggested at some point Mick get in contact with me.  She thought my music connections in the Heartland may be of assistance to him. He did reach out to me and in March 2023 I had Mick on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show.  Enjoy my conversation with the pride of Vienna, Missouri, Mick Byrd.

IT'S ANOTHER week of high weirdness here on Planet Earth! An eight-foot golden statue called NOW was unveiled atop a courthouse in New York City. It's supposed to represent the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but the ram's horns and serpentine appendages remind us more of the gender-fluid Sumerian deity Inanna. We also discuss a group that had its coming-out this past week, The Elders, who joined the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists to move the time on the Doomsday Clock to 90 seconds before midnight, the closest we've ever been, in their opinion, to total annihilation. Who are these “Elders,” and why do they seem to echo the globalists at the World Economic Forum? We also break down the significance of the number of so-called “elders,” comparing it to the Ennead, the main deities of the pantheon worshiped at Heliopolis in ancient Egypt, and The Nine, a group of spirits channeled by a group led by CIA asset Dr. Andrija Puharich between 1953 and 1978—a group that included members of some of America's wealthiest families, and connected to the military-intelligence complex, Hollywood (including Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry), and the Kennedy assassination. Why are people watching this?

This week, Justin and Dave watched Ozark. Here's the Netflix synopsis: "A financial advisor drags his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder money to appease a drug boss. The Byrdes and their teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, are, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary family with ordinary lives.” Justin appreciated the production value involved in this show, but had an emotional aversion to the characters and the story and the general vibe - especially the parts involving Jason Bateman urinating or visiting imaginary prostitutes. Dave had some deep thoughts as to why viewers are drawn to these dark sad stories (i.e., because their lives seem less crap in comparison), and had a lot to say about the corrupting power of money. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whyarepeoplewatchingthis/support

Ozark was created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams. The series has had many directors over its 4 season run but this season includes Andrew Bernstein, Alik Sakharov, and Rob Wright. The show stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Lisa Emery, Charlie Tahan, Felix Solis, and Alfonso Herrera. The Byrdes and their teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, are, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary family with ordinary lives. Except for the job of Marty, a Chicago financial advisor who also serves as the top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico. When things go awry, Marty must uproot his family from the skyscrapers of Chicago and relocate to the lazy lake region of the Missouri Ozarks.Links Instagram Twitter Facebook Our Website
