Today's guest deejay is Max Würden. I discovered Max on one of my deep dives on Spotify. It was Max's Format that captured my imagination. The album is warm and wistful. It feels like a ray of luxurious sunshine on a cold winter day. I don't know. It's subjective. Maybe you'd get something different from your listening experience, but that's what it was like for me. Max is known for diverse soundscapes and soundtrack production . Proficient as a drummer, he crafts sounds from silence. His works span various awards, including nominations for the Peer Raben Music Award. Max boasts a prolific discography across labels like Kompakt Records and Farfield Records. His recent endeavors involve album releases like Landmark and Script, alongside exhibitions and contributions to the renowned Pop Ambient series. Max's versatility shines through collaborations, and film soundtracks. So naturally I invited Max to guest deejay on Soundwave. I was delightfully surprised. Max sent me a mix steeped in jazz. I thought there'd be a lot more jazz (or Black classical music) on Soundwave, but sadly, it's a genre that is neglected on this show. Until now, that's it. Max digs deep and serves up rarities that should become part of your daily rotation. But it's not all jazz, either. Max included the ambient and instrumental music you've come to expect on Soundwave and deftly weaves it with jazz that's seamless. See you next week. It's easy to assume that New Zealand's Out Of Sorts came out of nowhere when their spirited first remix made its way into the hands of Kompakt Records, gaining attention from some of electronica's most favoured selectors. Something about their productions showcased that they weren't just one trick ponies, but seasoned studio professionals. In fact, Out Of Sorts has always been there. And now, after huge international success under a different moniker, they have embraced a sound that's difficult to pigeonhole, leaving the past almost irrelevant – except that this is a duo who know how to bring it. From the grimiest clubs to the most revered festivals on the global circuit, somewhere in the abyss, you may just hear something out of sorts. David Hasert is a key figure in his hometown of Cologne, Germany’s local scene. Not only is he the label owner of LIKE Records, but as booking agent he is also the face of local club institution Reineke Fuchs. Known as an established DJ who performs weekly across Germany (and internationally), he is also a respected producer who has released on LIKE, Beats In Space and Dantze. Alongside Michaela Dippel he has even released on Kompakt Records under the production moniker DAMH. Mixing by looping in the claps and vocal one shot of 2007 old-but-gold 20:20 Vision release of "Wiggle" by Manchester jazz drummer house producer Moodymanc aka Dubble D, the track has this vintage deep house, perfect to follow with more of the 80s-electro Chicago feeling by Johannes Albert's Hip Edits of the 1987 Mickey Oliver song "Never Let Go" featuring the vocals of Shanna Jay with updated kicks and bassline. 20-something years old Italian Corrado Bucci is a bit of a wonder child/posterboy of the jazzy-soulful house circles with his sophisticated productions seeing pressings from top quality labels like Compost, Defected, Local Talk and BBE Music, who also does A&R and scouting now for Japanese label Rebirth Records where he signed his debut to in 2012. Soulful deep house Berliner Vincenzo gave an uplifting remix to Bucci's "Sumthin'" which is a great filler to bridge to Dortmund/Berlin label Raving Society's dubby synthy lush electro release of "Innstruments" by fellow German Bassart. Indie-electro band Hot Chip's member and vocalist Joe Goddard has been putting out solo material since around 2009 and has formed a bit of a production partnership with Kompakt Records' co-owner and veteran Michael Mayer, so it's not surprising to see him providing a remix to Goddard's latest release on Domino "Children". I had to play a cheeky bootleg of Malinese "Golden Voice of Africa" Salif Keita's ode to women and feminism in Africa, "Moussolou", which also features female Malinese singer Oumou Sangare. Osunlade did an official Yoruba Soul mix of the song but it has a more organic feel although it's till a deep house track, I like the club feel of Megablast's re-edit which is really more like a remix. A bit of trivia about "Wassoulou sound" of Mali - since their independence in the 60's, the Wassoulou region of Mali has produced many strong female musicians creating new music based on their traditional dances and rhythms combined with the djembe drums and a harp-like instrument invented by local youths during this period called the kamalengoni, which gave birth to music unique to Wassoulou that communicates a sense of youthful rebellion and freedom. 2nd half of the mix goes deeper into deeper house and quite accidentally stringing a list of Berlin based artists together. I'm very excited about Berlin-based Get Physical artist MANTU aka Manuel Overbeck who has started his own label Raving Society and has signed some outstanding releases of late. His very own "Underwater Solution" has been described as melancholic but I think it's just the deep jazzy chords and bassline doing its thing. I also got sent a promo EP that includes a dreamy spoken word deep house number "Poetry Jam" by another Berlin producer Kerinnis. Up next, is "Secret Escapes" by yet another Berliner but a veteran, Anja Schneider from her first album after 9 years on her new label SoUS after leaving Mobilee the label she found more than a decade ago. La Fluer is a Swedish-now-living-in Berlin and has this new deep tech house track "Femton" out on the legendary club-label Watergate where he is also one of the resident DJs. The track was also featured in their Nov 2017 Watergate XV compilation. To finish, a remix of "Duhka" by a Brazilian producer L Cio for another Brazilian Gezender, who said that the track was inspired by zen music, mantras and Buddhist songs and was trying to "bring it to sensibile and sensory techno with spiritual, philosophical and political questions". Now, that's what I called deep. Which special moments left those chosen records in your mind? A) The overall story of my chosen records spans the complete timeline of electronic music in my life, so I guess will tell you something about the tracks . "Fade To Grey" by Visage was the very first record I bought, in early 1981, age 14. Depeche Mode was aside of The Cure the first band I was a fan of, and I still am. "See You" was the first DM-single I bought in 1982. "Blue Monday" was a true epiphany for me in 1983, I still play this record occasionally in my sets, people always love it. "Quite Unusual" by Front 242 represents my interest in Electronic Body Music and Industrial in the Mid- and Late-80ies. "Unfinished Sympathy" is my favorite track of Massive Attacks 1991-milestone-record "Blue Lines". I still like their stuff. "Terminator" by Goldie marks the beginning of my fascination for Drum´n´Bass in the 90’s, I really danced my ass off to that stuff. Around 1995/96 I started DJing, and Daft Punks seminal album "Homework" was among the stuff I played. I still do as a matter of fact. Steve Bugs classic "Loverboy" marks the Minimal-/Tech House-phase I had in the late 90ies, I still love this track. I was living in Cologne during that time and my favorite Club was Studio672, where Kompakt Records hosted their legendary "Total Confusion"-parties. By then I was completely hooked on Techno. The Wighnomy-Brothers-Remix of Slam’s "This World" is one of my favorite tracks of all time. When it came out in 2004 I literally played it in every single one of my sets for at least one year straight, I still play it from time to time. "Archangel" by Burial is a track by on of my favorite artists of all time, taken from his fantastic 2007 album "Untrue". That´s the stuff I mostly listen to at home. Same thing applies for Moderat and their three wonderful albums. The remix DJ Koze did for their track "Bad Kingdom" is probably one of my most favorite remixes of all time. The journey eventually closes with the remix that Sascha Cawa and Dirty Doering did for my latest track "Holy Moly". Hope you like it. One more important thing: Since almost all the tracks differ very much in style and BPM I deliberately did not mix them. Instead I played them from start to finish in their original tempo. Just in case you wonder. Q) Which highlights are coming up next behind the decks, out of the studio lab and in front of the TV-cameras? A) I am looking very much forward to playing at Docks/Hamburg on Dec.3 and KaterBlau/Berlin on Dec.9. In January and February I will go back into the studio to produce new tracks for a spring release. As far as my TV-stuff goes I will continue to present the Football-World-Cup-Qualifiers on RTLnitro.
