Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. On today's show, we welcome a long-time VC investor who brings the perspective from both sides of the pond. Fred Destin, the founder of Stride VC, a seed fund operating out of London and currently investing out of its second £123M fund, shares his views on the venture capital industry.Prior to Stride, Fred was a General Partner at Accel and Accomplice (fka Atlas Venture). He's invested in some of venture's big winners, including Deliveroo, Pillpack, Cazoo, Zoopla, Secret Escapes, Integral Ad Science, and more, generating over $1.4B in value to investors and a blended multiple in excess of 7x. Fred has been featured on the Forbes European Midas List a number of times. Fred and I had a fascinating conversation about the hows and the whys of early-stage venture. We discussed:How VCs can navigate the difference between decision points and discovery zones. Why a positive bias towards people can be a driver of returns in venture. Why venture capital is often a poor experience for founders. Why trust, truth, and empathy make for a strong and enduring founder relationship. Why Fred thinks that the most product of a venture capital organization is decisions.Why. and how simplicity can be core to company-building.How to evaluate risk versus reward at early-stage.How younger investors can hone their craft. The future of early-stage venture. Thanks Fred for coming on the podcast to share your wisdom on early-stage investing.
The idea of an entrepreneur giving up ‘a good job' in order to pursue their own venture is hardly an isolated one, but few entrepreneurs would believe their journey could take 20 years, seeing off a dot-com crash, two terrorist attacks on either side of the Atlantic, and a global financial crisis – any one of which probably brought down many SME's. But that is exactly what today's guest did. In 1999, Michael Dwyer sketched out the basis for his new venture on the front of an Irish Independent newspaper on a flight back from London, that would see him quit a marketing director role with Northern Foods to develop a hub on the internet to bring brands and consumers together in a way that works for both, using offers as a key attraction. And with that Pigsback.com was born. What followed were thousands of squeezy pink pig stress relievers, multiple ups and downs that saw the business skirt perilously close to oblivion, and further fund raises, harsh cost cutting plans, illogical price from competitors – which proved to be their undoing - before finally selling the business in April 2019 to Secret Escapes for €25m. This is the 18th episode with guest Michael Dwyer, Entrepreneur and Founder of Pigsback.com in the Davy podcast series 'Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly'. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. Fun fact, his portfolio has a total enterprise value of more than $10BN and he generated in excess of $700M in exit value to investors. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How did Fred make his way into the world of venture and come to co-found one of Europe's newest and largest seed funds in Stride.VC? 2.) If you look to Twitter, all VCs are "open for business", does Fred really believe the market is still open for business? How will deal volume be affected? How bad does Fred think this could get? How does this downturn compare to that of the dot-com and 2008? 3.) Why did Stride decide to take the decision to pause on investing at this moment in time? How does Fred respond to the suggestion of better pricing and less competition at this time? How does Fred believe venture investors view of risk evolves at this time? You may know that LoveFilm became Amazon Prime Video, that part of the deal was public knowledge. What you may not be familiar with is the wrangling, the deal making and the allegiance swapping that went on behind the scenes to get the deal across the table. In this very special live episode of Secret Leaders we once again sit down with serial entrepreneur and angel investor, best known for creating Lovefilm and being an early investor in Secret Escapes, ‘the subscription guy’ William Reeve and VC Jedi, Simon Cook, to discuss the ins and outs of one of the most complicated business sales in recent history - when LoveFilm sold to Amazon. Because this deal wasn’t straightforward in the slightest. A series of unusual mergers, buyouts, disputes and much more led to this being one of the more complicated deals of both their lives. In fact, the only way to explain how convulated the deal was, is by comparing it to the plot of Game of Thrones. Simon was the VC on the board throughout the whole deal and Will was the founder of LoveFilm, yet neither of them are 100% clear on what went down. It’s very rare to hear such insights from such a high profile sale, so grab a notebook and pen and learn what it takes to not just grow a subscription business, but how to sell it to a behemoth like Amazon. “They [Amazon] could see we were winning. They said ‘we do not believe in being a loser in anything we do. We'd much rather have a small piece of the winner, than a big piece in the loser.’ And that was their indication they'd much rather sell to us than compete with us.”We chat about:Building up LoveFilm and plonking flags in EuropeWhy competition drives business forward and sparks innovationWhy they teamed up with Amazon to defeat NetflixLessons learned - venture debt, paying attention to working capital and why raising venture capital is the worst thing a business can doLinks:https://www.secretleaders.com/william-reevehttps://www.secretleaders.com/s01e15-simon-cookWant to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? Uncork Capital is a seed-stage venture firm that commits early, helps with the hard stuff, and sticks around. Really. Andy's investments include LaunchDarkly, Coder, Crossbeam, Focal Systems, Human Interest, Pattern (acquired by Workday), Test.ai, Simplify, Fountain, GreatHorn, Bigfinite, and Identify3D, as well as a number of companies still in stealth. Andy was previously a prolific seed investor into many well-known startups. Postmates, Buffer, Intercom, Pipedrive, Hullabalu, RolePoint, Tray.io, Bugsnag, Thread, Calm, Secret Escapes, Apiary (acquired by Oracle), Import.io, Zesty (acquired by Square), Marvel, Cloud66 and more. Prior to becoming an investor, Andy is best know for co-founding Huddle with Alastair Mitchell. Andy had many roles at Huddle over the years - Head of Technology, Head of Product, Head of Marketing, Head of Strategy / Business Development, GM North America - but he was most passionate about building a great team and a great product. Andy stepped back from his executive role in 2015 but remained on the board of directors until the company's acquisition in 2017, when it was eventually sold to private equity for $89m in August 2017. That sum is far less than Huddle's reported peak valuation of up to $300M when it snagged a $51 million Series D funding round in 2014.

The kelpie is a shape-shifting water spirit that is said to inhabit the lochs, rivers, and pools of Scotland. Underneath the surface of the water, the kelpie lives in its true, monstrous form, but passers-by beware… the malevolent kelpie can transform at will into a beautiful human or a majestic horse. In these guises, the kelpie does it’s best to lure victims to a watery grave. This week’s story: “The Kelpie and the 10 Children” by Lindsey Morse & Niall CooperThis episode also included an excerpt from:“Address to the Deil” by Robert BurnsThis episode was researched and written by Lindsey Morse. Today’s guest is James Routledge, Founder of Sanctus. Sanctus is a mental wellness start up that is on a mission to inspire people to work on their mental health just like we do our physical health. They have a bold vision to put the world’s first mental health gym on the high street, and I for one hope that they can achieve this. James’s passion to help others improve their mental health came from his own experience having suffered mental health issues, following the failure of his first business Match Chat, something we discuss in detail in today’s show. The idea for Sanctus actually came about when he shared this struggle in a heart-felt and honest blog where he openly talked about the journey that he and his co-founder George had been through. This blog received 100s of responses and from this initial post the idea for Sanctus was born. Since then Sanctus has grown into a large team with over 40 businesses including Aviva, Secret Escapes, Tansferwise, RedBull amongst others, to help them reframe the conversation around mental health. Their amazing work has been featured in publications including the Times, The metro, and now the 40 Minute Mentor! I have close friends and family that have had struggled with their mental health over the years so when I heard about the work Sanctus was doing and saw the refreshing honesty and humour with which James talks about it, I was really keen to get James on the podcast to have a chat. This episode was recorded shortly after mental health week here in the UK and we go into some really important topics in this interview around mental health, the challenges we all face and what you can think about to look after yours. James’s experience of launching and growing a VC funded start up and then dealing with and overcoming its failure to get to where he is today is truly inspiring. It’s a little longer than previous episodes but I know you’re going to get so much from what he shares in this interview. If you want to find out more about James you can check out his LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jdroutledge1?originalSubdomain=uk If you want to find out more about Sanctus you can check out their website - https://sanctus.io/ We're always keen to get feedback so if you have any thoughts once you’ve listened to this interview just drop me an email at james@jbmc.co.uk

Serial tech entrepreneur William Reeve realised early on that he wasn’t quite techy enough to be a techy, and so focused on the business side of tech businesses. And without this early enlightenment, we might not have seen the likes of Zoopla, Dunelm, Secret Escapes, Lovefilm or Graze, to name but a few of the businesses that have benefitted from William’s involvement. At the tender age of 23, having recently graduated from Oxford University with a degree in engineering and having just started his own company, William was told by a family member that he was ‘too young’ to start his own business. Four years later that business sold and netted William £10m.Listen today as we find out what it took to bring Lovefilm to market and how it beat Amazon. Join us as we chat to William about:Other than marriage, what William’s best investment to date wasHow, aged 27, he sold his first business and made almost £10m in the processWhy he chose to go down the DVD subscription routeHow Lovefilm handled the slow business start by buying out the competitionWhat it’s like negotiating with a behemoth like AmazonHow to measure user churnLinks:https://www.wreeve.com/Want to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? #ReclaimEDM Podcast 02 features unique soulful deep-house tracks from around the world, mixed live by DJ nomsta. (www.nomsta.net), featuring tracks by Chewy Rubs, Dubble D presents Moodymanc, Johannes Albert, Vincenzo, Bassart, Michael Mayer, Joe Goddard, MANTU, Salif Keita x Megablast, KERINNIS, Anja Schneider, La Fleur, Gezender and L Cio. The mix starts with the tempo of 116 bpm, as most upbeat funk tracks would similarly be, opening with "Get Down" a remix of the 1978 Gene Chandler song by disco-nu-disco re-editor/producer Chewy Rubs whose most recent release was on Yam Who's Midnight Riot label, I let the funk flow keeping all the tracks strictly at 116 bpm for a steady deepburn groove. Mixing by looping in the claps and vocal one shot of 2007 old-but-gold 20:20 Vision release of "Wiggle" by Manchester jazz drummer house producer Moodymanc aka Dubble D, the track has this vintage deep house, perfect to follow with more of the 80s-electro Chicago feeling by Johannes Albert's Hip Edits of the 1987 Mickey Oliver song "Never Let Go" featuring the vocals of Shanna Jay with updated kicks and bassline. 20-something years old Italian Corrado Bucci is a bit of a wonder child/posterboy of the jazzy-soulful house circles with his sophisticated productions seeing pressings from top quality labels like Compost, Defected, Local Talk and BBE Music, who also does A&R and scouting now for Japanese label Rebirth Records where he signed his debut to in 2012. Soulful deep house Berliner Vincenzo gave an uplifting remix to Bucci's "Sumthin'" which is a great filler to bridge to Dortmund/Berlin label Raving Society's dubby synthy lush electro release of "Innstruments" by fellow German Bassart. Indie-electro band Hot Chip's member and vocalist Joe Goddard has been putting out solo material since around 2009 and has formed a bit of a production partnership with Kompakt Records' co-owner and veteran Michael Mayer, so it's not surprising to see him providing a remix to Goddard's latest release on Domino "Children". I had to play a cheeky bootleg of Malinese "Golden Voice of Africa" Salif Keita's ode to women and feminism in Africa, "Moussolou", which also features female Malinese singer Oumou Sangare. Osunlade did an official Yoruba Soul mix of the song but it has a more organic feel although it's till a deep house track, I like the club feel of Megablast's re-edit which is really more like a remix. A bit of trivia about "Wassoulou sound" of Mali - since their independence in the 60's, the Wassoulou region of Mali has produced many strong female musicians creating new music based on their traditional dances and rhythms combined with the djembe drums and a harp-like instrument invented by local youths during this period called the kamalengoni, which gave birth to music unique to Wassoulou that communicates a sense of youthful rebellion and freedom. 2nd half of the mix goes deeper into deeper house and quite accidentally stringing a list of Berlin based artists together. I'm very excited about Berlin-based Get Physical artist MANTU aka Manuel Overbeck who has started his own label Raving Society and has signed some outstanding releases of late. His very own "Underwater Solution" has been described as melancholic but I think it's just the deep jazzy chords and bassline doing its thing. I also got sent a promo EP that includes a dreamy spoken word deep house number "Poetry Jam" by another Berlin producer Kerinnis. Up next, is "Secret Escapes" by yet another Berliner but a veteran, Anja Schneider from her first album after 9 years on her new label SoUS after leaving Mobilee the label she found more than a decade ago. La Fluer is a Swedish-now-living-in Berlin and has this new deep tech house track "Femton" out on the legendary club-label Watergate where he is also one of the resident DJs. The track was also featured in their Nov 2017 Watergate XV compilation. To finish, a remix of "Duhka" by a Brazilian producer L Cio for another Brazilian Gezender, who said that the track was inspired by zen music, mantras and Buddhist songs and was trying to "bring it to sensibile and sensory techno with spiritual, philosophical and political questions". Now, that's what I called deep. ReclaimEDM.com: music channel for deep underground quality music
Snad celá česká e-commerce zaznamenala prodej Slevomat.cz, Zlavomat.sk a Skrz.cz britské společnost Secret Escapes. Majitelé Slevomatu si jej najali a on je celým obchodem provázel. Slevomat ale není jediným projektem, s jehož prodejem má zkušenosti. Právě pracuje na něčem dalším… Co se ve videu dozvíte? - Proč si majitelé Slevomatu najali právě Pavla Vopařila a svěřili obchod zrovna jemu? We also speak to Ksenia Zheltoukhova, Research Associate at the CIPD, who discusses recent CIPD research findings , which highlight the importance of finding a way to formalise your values as your business grows.
