It's hoped Clare's golf tourism industry will reap the rewards of a 'generational' opportunity presented by the hosting of the Walker Cup. Preparations are being finalised in Lahinch Golf Club for the 51st edition of the tournament, which gets underway this weekend. The opening ceremony, marking the official beginning of the tournament, takes place at 5pm this evening. Weather permitting, festivities will be held on the first tee, alongside the clubhouse, with a backup plan in place to move the occasion into the golf village. Lahinch Golf Cub Captain, John Gleeson, says the challenging conditions will make for an incredible spectacle. The action gets underway tomorrow with the morning foresomes, while 8,000 spectators will be in attendance on both days of the competition. Over 60 greenkeepers will be on hand over the weekend, with 45 drafted in as volunteers from around the world, to keep the course in top shape. Both American and British television crews are in place, with the Walker Cup to be broadcast live for 10 hours each day in the United States. Walker Cup Committee Chairman, Padraig Slattery, says the entire county will benefit from the spotlight being placed on Clare.

Clare is set to take centre stage on the international sporting map this month, with two major golf events coming to the county. Lahinch-based artist Michael Hanrahan is marking the upcoming Walker Cup at Lahinch Golf Club on September 5 and 6 with two new paintings inspired by the famous links.  Hanrahan has produced works depicting the 8th and 12th holes at Lahinch Links, capturing the character of the course ahead of the prestigious amateur golf event.   The artist is also looking forward to an exciting international opportunity, having been invited to Lexington, Kentucky, as the guest artist for the Breeders' Cup in October.  Photo (c) Clare FM

Lahinch and the wider golfing community are mourning the loss of Robert McCavery, who passed away peacefully last weekend.  A PGA Professional and honorary life member of Lahinch Golf Club, Robert devoted more than five decades of his life to the famous links, continuing a remarkable family association with the club that stretched back almost a century.   Through his work, his love of golf, and his warm friendship with generations of members and visitors, he became a cherished part of the fabric of Lahinch.   Robert McCavery's funeral mass will take place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Lahinch this morning at 11am, with burial afterwards in Kilmacreehy Cemetery.  He is survived by his wife Anne, daughter Rachael, and son Robert.   To reflect on Robert's life, his contribution to the club, and the legacy he leaves behind, Alan Morrissey was joined by Lahinch club historian, Fr Enda Glynn. On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by a member of Lahinch Golf Club, Áine Donegan. Áine was last with us after she qualified for the women's US Open, which took place recently. Her opening round of 69 at Pebble Beach grabbed the headlines and Áine ultimately finished her very first major tied 45th. Áine is now prepping for the US Women's Amateur, which will take place at Bel-Air Country Club early next month. Áine discussed her nail biting experience regarding her lost clubs and the destroyed driver. She highlighted the nerves she had at the start of the tournament and explained how they settled after a few brilliant rounds of golf. Áine also spoke about her upcoming competitions and her future in golf.

On Tuesday's Morning Focus Alan was joined live in studio by Ennis native, golfer Aine Donegan. Aine is getting ready for the biggest sporting challenge of her life because in just a couple of weeks, the Lahinch Golf Club member will make her debut amongst the pros, when she competes in the US Women's Open at Pebble Beach. Aine will be teeing it up alongside some of the biggest names in the women's game in California from July 6th to 9th , including Ireland's Leona Maguire. Aine spoke to Alan about her pathway to being selected for the US Women's Open, her experience attending university in the United States and much more.
