(Note: This episode originally ran in 2018.)Is it really cheaper to shop at an airport Duty Free store? And why are so many of them alike? In the 1940s, if you were flying from New York City to London or Paris you would find yourself making a pit stop for fuel on the western coast of Ireland. The Shannon airport at the time wasn't much to look at, but the passengers arriving there were movie stars and celebrities, basically the super rich. And the people of Shannon realized pretty quickly that they needed to upgrade the local amenities for their wealthy clientele. They hired a man named Brendan O'Regan to make it happen. Being the quick-thinking entrepreneur that he was, O'Regan convinced the Irish government to create a tax loophole. And thus, duty free stores were born. Today on the show, we follow the surprising origin of duty free, and try to answer the question: Are they really saving you any money?Help support Planet Money and hear our bonus episodes by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

With Singapore formally established, we look at those first months and years. As soon as the document was signed, Raffles left the island and William Farquhar took over as First Resident. It would be hard to find a more capable person to manage what needed to get the new enterprise up and running. Taking advantage of his personal connections in Melaka and the political and technological dynamic of the time, Farquhar got the ball rolling in Singapore. The Dutch were outraged and plenty of fancy footwork and smooth talking needed to be done to avert a war. Singapore became an overnight sensation in the region. Many traders were attracted to Duty-Free trade. This was one reason the British East India Company wasn't willing to give in to the Dutch so fast. William Farquhar kept it all together and rose to the occasion at this most early period of Singapore's second incarnation. We'll look at the eyebrow-raising measures he took to turn on the government revenue taps and how this will all lead to his undoing. We also look at Farquhar's successor as First Resident, John Crawfurd. How he outfoxed The Temenggong Abdul Rahman and the Sultan Hussein Shah is also presented. We close with immigrants coming to Singapore in droves, soon outnumbering the local Malay populace. After peace with the Dutch was achieved in 1824, it was full speed ahead for Singapore. Four local entrepreneurs who also served as early community leaders are also introduced. These are Tan Tock Seng 陈笃生, Seah Eu Chin 佘有进, Naraina Pillai, and Syed Omar Al-Juneid. The very cute stalker's anthem: Return to Sender!
Unscripted TV In Association With Telepictures, and iHeart Media, that will examine and expose the dark secrets of the "Troubled Teen Industry." Beginning with Provo Canyon School, each season will focus on the story of one youth treatment facility, its survivors, and the traumatizing abuse at the hands of their captors. Hosted by Caroline Cole and Rebecca Mellinger, Trapped in Treatment weaves together personal accounts with historical detail and expert opinions to shine a light on what really happens at behavior modification centers and how this billion-dollar industry has flourished for so long. Episodes here: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-trapped-in-treatment-91773544/ CAROLINE COLE BIO Caroline Cole is an entrepreneur, activist, and trauma-focused women's transformation coach. At 14 years old, Caroline was sent to a lock-down behavior modification facility where she would stay for 29 months and encounter some of the most horrifying deprivations of human rights. Through her own reckoning with this experience, Caroline has channeled her outrage into public policy and social change through her role as the Director of Government Relations for the non-profit Breaking Code Silence. Her personal experiences with trauma, including domestic violence, addiction, institutionalization, homelessness, and consequentially living with C-PTSD allows her to see greater social issues through a unique and compassionate lens. Turning her pain into purpose, Caroline advocates for a world where the effects of trauma are understood and public policy effectively allows for the treatment and prevention of abuse in all forms. Caroline's background is in psychology, mental health, state government, and advocacy. She believes that through the deinstitutionalization of all people and the rebuilding of our communities and families, we may finally experience healing as a nation and throughout the world. REBECCA MELLINGER BIO Rebecca Mellinger is passionate about harnessing the power of entertainment to drive social change. As Paris Hilton's Impact Producer, she is working to reform the "Troubled Teen Industry" through policy change, public awareness, and mental health support services for institutional abuse survivors. Rebecca is also leading the impact campaign for Duty Free, an independent documentary about ageism and the need for intergenerational care. With a background in nonprofit management and the entertainment industry, Rebecca manages every aspect of each impact campaign - from working on the ground with the impacted community, interfacing with national partners, and developing effective programming.https://www.trappedintreatment.co/https://parishilton.com/1111-media/https://www.stopinstitutionalchildabuse.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
