Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most popular fictional detective. In addition to the many novels and short stories penned by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes is the most portrayed literary character in stage, film, and TV history, having appeared on stage and screen more than 250 times, according to Wikipedia. Actors who have played Holmes include Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Charlton Heston, Christopher Plummer, Roger Moore, Peter O’Toole, and more recently Benedict Cumberbatch in the British TV series Sherlock, and Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary on CBS. All these productions are made possible because there continues to be an audience for stories featuring Holmes. Laurie King and Leslie Klinger, best selling authors, have brought together a group of talented mystery writers in a new anthology: For the Sake of the Game: Stories Inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon. The instructions given to the authors was straightforward: be inspired by the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle and go where your imagination takes you. This is the fourth anthology Laurie and Leslie have produced and we are excited to talk with Laurie about this new collection of stories featuring Holmes, Dr. Watson, and other Baker Street characters in original and [...]
Today I’m joined by Laurie King. I’ve been following Laurie for quite some time so I was really excited to get into this episode. Laurie is a nutrition coach who decided to pursue a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics after her own battles with an eating disorder and an under-active thyroid. Laurie decided to pursue this degree not only to remedy her own issues with eating but to put herself in the position to be able to ensure that others would never be in her position with her relationship with food. Laurie focuses on how to eat in a way that supports overall health and a balance of hormones without the need for medication. This was a conversation that I was constantly learning throughout and one that I really enjoyed. In today’s episode we talk about how Laurie got started in nutrition coaching, hormonal health, how imbalances come about, high intensity training and hormonal health, the symptoms of hormone imbalance, and much more. Show notes (4:54)- How did you get into nutrition coaching? (8:35)- “The best coaching comes from what you’ve already experienced” (13:08)- Hormonal health and food interactions (20:50)- Impact of hormonal birth control (22:42)- What to know about female hormones (24:44)- High intensity fitness and hormonal health (33:20)- Stress and imbalances (37:08)- Forms of stress and formal issues (40:40)- Thyroid health and irregular periods and symptoms of hormone imbalances (42:24)- Education drives success (51:00)- Prioritizing body composition vs. hormonal health (52:55)- Repairing hormonal health (1:04:50)- If you had to start from scratch with $500 and a laptop, what would you do with it? (1:05:48)- If you had a couple billion dollars and a staff of top thinkers, what would you do with it? (1:09:05)- Can you think of a time in your life where you had to take a leap and you didn’t know what was going to happen? Laura Caldwell is a renaissance woman. She is an author, a lawyer, an educator, a lifesaver, a philanthropist and a motivational speaker. She is a former civil trial attorney who is founding director of Life After Innocence. She is also a published author of 14 novels and one nonfiction book. Her most recent work is ANATOMY OF INNOCENCE, stories of the wrongfully convicted are brought to life in collaboration with best-selling mystery and thriller writers in this harrowing anthology. Long thought to be statistical anomalies in an otherwise sound justice system, wrongful convictions happen with frightening regularity through advances in technology and dogged investigation. Nonetheless, very few people understand just how they happen, and more importantly, the consequences. Now the groundbreaking anthology Anatomy of Innocence, edited by Laura Caldwell and Leslie S. Klinger, tells the incredible true stories of over a dozen innocent men and women who were convicted of serious crimes and cast into the maw of a vast and deeply flawed American criminal justice system before eventually, miraculously being exonerated. Here, each “exoneree” is paired with a high-profile mystery and thriller writer (including Lee Child, Sara Paretsky, Laurie King, S.J. Rozan, Brad Parks and others) to produce a unique collaboration. In this episode King and Klinger discuss the story collection they edited entitled a Study in Sherlock. Neil Gaiman. Laura Lippman. Lee Child. These are just three of eighteen superstar authors who provide fascinating, thrilling, and utterly original perspectives on Sherlock Holmes in this one-of-a-kind book. These modern masters place the sleuth in suspenseful new situations, create characters who solve Holmesian mysteries, contemplate Holmes in his later years, fill gaps in the Sherlock Holmes Canon, and reveal their own personal obsessions with the Great Detective.

Laurie King's TOUCHSTONE is set in England, 1926, in the tense atmosphere of impending labor strikes that threaten to tear the nation apart. It is the story of a remarkable WWI-scarred veteran whose injuries have stripped him of sensory filters, allowing him to feel the slightest emotional turmoil in those he encounters. He finds himself at the mercy of myriad political players who seek to harness his talents to impose their vision of socio-political order. While this might seem an anachronistic tale in today's marketplace, the weft of the historical canvas sketched with such deft touch by King warps into our own time. When we see that all outside-of-center labor and political leanings of the era were dubbed threats to "national security"; threats that permitted the government to evoke powers that displaced democratic rights, a vortex opens before our eyes—spinning us through space and time before landing us again where we've always been. The novel is, indeed, a touchstone. This podcast is brought to you by Clute and Edwards of www.noircast.net.
