#5 What Was The Question? - It’s finally come to pass. The podcasts can end now, because the whole point of starting them up has been achieved. Richard’s guest is a man who has played all theatrical parts, but most notably the part of Brian Blessed.I couldn’t even begin to describe what happened on this extraordinary night, except to say it is was a bona fide happening. Try and predict how many words Richard will say in this. It’s a free form and extraordinary, yet sometimes beautiful and inspiring, journey through the career, philosophy and madness of a man who might be the greatest living Englishmen. How much of it is true? I can’t tell you. But at least some of it. Includes sticking it to Picasso, toileting on a mountain, biting umbilical cords, working with the young Peter O’Toole and Patrick Stewart, never dying and probably some other stuff. I can’t tell you. I had a little nap through most of it. Worth watching the video version to see my torture on what was one of the best experiences of my life. We got Hollywood royalty on the show--this week Kate Burton is here! You Might Know Her From Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Hedda Gabler, The Elephant Man, Company, and Big Trouble in Little China. Kate talked about how Shonda Rhimes and the soap world of Shondaland opened up doors for her career with a newfound zeitgeist-y fame. She brought us to tears talking about being on Broadway (in two shows) right after 9/11 and rallying with the theatre community to let the world know New York was still here. And she was super candid about her showbiz upbringing with actor parents: her father Richard Burton (and stepmother Elizabeth Taylor) and mother Sybil Williams (and stepfather Jordan Christopher). Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter, and episode 132 of the long funning ramily drama in which ranty old seadog Simon Hargreaves (played by Oliver Reed, in his final screen role), rattling around alone in the east wing of Chatter Manors, is faced with moral bankruptcy and can only be saved by the intervention of the saintly Martin Fitz-Gibbons (played by Peter O’Toole in his final screen role). Together they form an unlikely alliance with Bennetts, the bike insurance specialists (played by Alan Bennett, in his final screen role) and www.bikesocial.co.uk, the world of biking on the web (played by Meryl Strepsil, in her final screen role). And there are some motorbikes in all this, in case you’re new round here. And in this episode, Simon and Martin chatter about: a new Suzuki Hayabusa they know nothing about, but which you, by now, do – was we right or was we right? Triumph’s new and rather impressively spec’d Speed Trip KTM’s updated but also impressive 1290 Super Adventure with rude tyres Are BMW really not going to bike shows any more? And in the FEC sack, we have topics as varied as: how to secure your helmet to your bike when going walkabout how to ride over potholes and bumps (at speed) what do electric bikes have to achieve to find widespread acceptance? what makes a bike exceed expectations? what’s the Five Nations Tour? when is a Vyrus not a virus? ...and much, much more...
The movie we are talking about today is almost the textbook definition of FAVORITE. One of us loved it from the moment we saw it in theaters, another loved it from when they saw parts of it at work, and one of us just watched it the night before the podcast. But by the time we record this episode, ALL of us love this movie and recommend it highly. Stardust was rated PG-13 and was released on August 10, 2007. Stardust is filled with star power, with performances from Ian McKellen as the Narrator, Peter O’Toole as King, Charlie Cox as Tristan Thorn, Mark Strong as Septimus, Rupert Everett as Secundus, Claire Danes as Yvaine, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Lamia. Hosts: Daniel Levain, Ian Sweetman, and Eric Sweetman.
It looks like Randy finally decided to pick for us a good, old-fashioned, big-budget, mid-century, historical war epic. Michael Caine plays Peter O’Toole playing David Bowie as Michael Caine in the Role of Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead alongside Stanley Baker as Lieutenant John Chard: both men of hesitant bravery competing with one another for the command of a small regiment of British soldiers defending against a massive Zulu army in 1870s Natal. As you might imagine, there’s quite a lot to unpack here. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Francois Truffaut’s Jules et Jim (1962).
#8 Lucy Collinson has been at the forefront of 3D volume and correlated electron microscopy since setting up the internationally renowned facilities at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute and now the Francis Crick Institute. In this episode, Peter O’Toole discusses not only Lucy being a leading light in her field and her motivations, but uncovers some of Lucy’s more obscure passions. Not to give too much away, but surfing and being a dedicated Eurovision fan are just elements worth listening for. While the episode isn’t just about work, it was great to hear about how Lucy’s career developed and how she became so successful (while still liking the Eurovision song contest!). #7 Young, successful and still so disarming. In this episode, Hari Shroff reveals what it was like to work in the exciting area of Super-Resolution microscopy during its infancy, and discusses working in the early days of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm Research Campus. Hari discusses his latest work and the efforts that go behind such a high impact publication while also talking about the advice and patience he needed when setting up his own lab. Unwittingly, Hari and Peter O’Toole’s paths came very close as Hari spent some of his youth in Peter’s city of Birmingham in the UK, which unfortunately was not the place that it is thankfully now. Thank you, Hari, for taking the time to chat, especially as he is juggling work with a young family, as well as his work family, which is evident from the interview.

How does popular culture see Lawrence of Arabia? This month Angus, Chris and Jessica speak to cartoonist Ned Barnett about his work on T. E. Lawrence, including both his research travelogue, Dreamers of the Day, and his on-going three volume graphic biography of the famous polymath. Along the way we discuss Lawrence as a celebrity, the challenges of cartooning, the comparative heights of Lawrence and Peter O’Toole and the textile holdings of the National Army Museum. #4 - Ever wonder how people end up working in a core facility? You are about to find out. In this show, Peter O’Toole welcomes Alison North from The Rockefeller University in New York and Kurt Anderson from The Francis Crick Institute in London. Alison, originally from the UK, now works in the USA, while Kurt is from the USA but now works in the UK. So there’s an interesting dynamic to this interview! Both Alison and Kurt are internationally renowned in the world of microscopy, but neither started out with a passion for microscopes and nor did their current roles even exist when they were in their early postdoc days. They talk about their early careers, getting established, and how they balance work with outside life. They share their interests, from Kayaking to serious mountain biking, supporting rival baseball teams, and discuss Alison’s extraordinary collection of New York Yankee caps and tops. #1 Join this informal chat between Peter O’Toole and Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz of The Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Beyond kayaking to work and a passion for plants, Jennifer explains how she became interested in Biology from her time teaching in Africa, and how she was fortunate enough in her early career to work alongside some of the true giants of cell biology. Very few cell biologists have had so many major impacts on the field, and underpinning most of her work was the use of the microscope, with many discoveries going hand-in-hand with the development of microscopy itself. Jennifer shares some great stories as to how these developments came about, what it is like to work in the Janelia Research Campus and how to Kayak to work (hint: don’t do it in the dark!). #2 Step into a brief history of how the confocal microscope came to be! Peter O’Toole chats with one of the pioneers of the confocal microscope - Tony Wilson from the University of Oxford. Wearing his cowboy hat and boots throughout the interview, Tony talks about his passion for cattle, his Jaguar and Yorkshire cricket, and how finding life scientists to try this ‘new’ technique was not as simple as you may now think. It is an intriguing insight into the trials and tribulations of transforming a concept into a ubiquitous technique without which (arguably) several Nobel prizes may never have come to be. Beyond the confocal microscope, Tony also talks about the tribulations and opportunities he experienced in creating a spin-out company. This is a fascinating chat that captures the person and the science behind such vital developments in the world of microscopy. #3 In this latest episode, Peter O’Toole chats to Jason Swedlow of The University of Dundee, whose open-source tools are revolutionising microscopy. While Peter has known Jason for many years, this was a great opportunity to find out more about Jason on a personal level including his decision to stop competitive road cycling through to his travels around the world. Taking a rest from being a leading jet setter, Jason is now enjoying lockdown and more time with his family while also still driving forward many international initiatives and balancing his research and company interests. Catch Jason at home and hear about what motivates him. You’ll discover some great tips and tricks for getting to the top, as well as hear about his first microscope experiences! A young, award winning director desperately trying to complete a movie on the open sea, whilst battling a comedy genius who is trying to sabotage his own film. SYNOPSIS In September 1973 Peter Sellers embarked on the production of a 17th Century pirate comedy in Cyprus for Columbia Pictures (Ghost in the Noonday Sun). Sellers lost confidence with the film as soon as it began and desperately tried to sabotage it, firing the producers in the first week and then setting his sights on his friend the director, Peter Medak. At its core lies the story of an unraveling production but also the tale of a young director firmly on a path to greatness. Medak had made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably 'The Ruling Class' in 1972 with Peter O'Toole (nominated for the Palm D'Or). This film changed his career forever. After 43 years the wounds have barely healed for Medak and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally release the weight associated with its failure. The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvmX_lThtxc

The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster. After 43 years the wounds have barely healed for Director Peter Medak (The Ruling Class, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Romeo is Bleeding) and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally release the weight associated with its failure. At its core lies the story of an unraveling production but also the tale of a young Director firmly on a path to greatness. Medak had made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably ‘The Ruling Class’ in 1972 with Peter O’Toole. This film changed his career forever. In September 1973 Peter Sellers embarked on the production of a 17th Century pirate comedy in Cyprus for Columbia Pictures (Ghost in the Noonday Sun). Structured around the original director Peter Medak and his journey back to the island 42 years later, The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a timeline of events supported by eye-opening and heart-felt interviews with remaining cast members, production staff, Cypriot locals and others from the world of filmmaking. From Los Angeles to New York, from London to Cyprus, Medak recaptures what it was like to work with the genius talents of Sellers and Milligan whilst explaining the saga of the Pirate film and how such a brilliant and funny idea could go so terribly wrong and become a total disaster. Director Peter Medak joins us for a candid conversation on the toll the making of his star-crossed film took on him professionally, personally and psychologically and where he is today. Capt. William O’Toole, 45, Clayton, a native of Constableville and son of Civil War soldier and Irish immigrant, Peter O’Toole, piloted the Hartford. In addition to the captain, also lost when the ship went down were his wife, Mary Manson O’Toole and their 5-month-old child, Mary Kathleen, along with four others. The O’Tooles left five other children orphans, who after the tragedy were cared for by their 68-year-old grandmother, Sarah O’Toole of Clayton. Accompanying the washing up of the skeletal remains of the ship last month came fresh reflections about the captain of the doomed vessel by his descendants. "Para sentirse mal hay que estar vivo". Teniente Chard. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss T.E. Lawrence (1888 – 1935), better known as Lawrence of Arabia, a topic drawn from over 1200 suggestions for our Listener Week 2019. Although Lawrence started as an archaeologist in the Middle East, when World War I broke out he joined the British army and became an intelligence officer. His contact with a prominent Arab leader, Sharif Hussein, made him sympathetic to Hussein’s cause and during the Arab Revolt of 1916 he not only served the British but also the interests of Hussein. After the war he was dismayed by the peace settlement and felt that the British had broken an assurance that Sharif Hussein would lead a new Arab kingdom. Lawrence was made famous by the work of Lowell Thomas, whose film of Lawrence drew huge audiences in 1919, which led to his own book Seven Pillars of Wisdom and David Lean’s 1962 film with Peter O'Toole. In previous Listener Weeks, we've discussed Kafka's The Trial, The Voyages of Captain Cook, Garibaldi and the Risorgimento, Moby Dick and The Thirty Years War.
