In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Ana Cvejic from the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre at the University of Copenhagen about her work on using sc-multiomics to characterise human developmental hematopoiesis. The conversation starts by delving into Ana's research on hematopoiesis, starting with her work on identifying novel genes controlling blood traits in zebrafish models. She explains her transition to single-cell methodologies and the application of single-cell RNA sequencing to study hematopoietic cells in zebrafish, focusing on thrombocyte lineage commitment and gene expression. The discussion progresses to her groundbreaking study on human fetal hematopoiesis, where she combined single-cell RNA-seq with single-cell ATAC-seq to understand chromatin accessibility and gene expression dynamics. Ana then shares insights into the identification of new cell surface markers and the priming of hematopoietic stem cells, particularly in conditions like Down syndrome. Furthermore, she then elaborates on the construction of a phylogenetic tree of blood development using whole-genome sequencing of single-cell-derived hematopoietic colonies from healthy human fetuses. She explains the motivation behind this study, highlighting the insights gained regarding stem cell quantities, developmental timelines, and mutations in blood development. It is always interesting to compare different farming systems across this world. This week on the podcast we have Dr Tim Keady speaking about farming in Ireland. Having recently returned from a trip to New Zealand, Tim has a great insight at how the different systems compare."We went to see the use of different technologies on-farm, with the intention of reducing labour and improving efficiency. So, we decided to go to New Zealand" says Tim. "... to look at the systems of sheep reproduction... but also to look at the types and levels of technologies that are used on farm, particularly to improve labour efficiency."Dr Tim Keady is principal sheep research scientist in the Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Teagasc Athenry and has a wealth of knowlege on the Irish sheep industry. Mark and Tim compare the different genetics, grassland management, hogget breeding and markets which are surprisingly similar in many ways. Firstly, in the last number of years in pedigree breeding genotyping is becoming more and more important in Ireland. Tim says "It's looking like there's a new scheme thats been launched this year that one of the requirements is that you have to buy a genotyped ram." A concept that has yet to reach our shores. Tim runs Mark through the Irish sheep meat markets. Much like New Zealand, Ireland exports most of it's lamb, with 70% going overseas, making it the largest net sheep meat exporter in Europe. With 2.5 million ewes, that's no mean feat. Mark and Tim discuss the breed profile of these sheep to fit both the Irish seasons but also the export market requirements.Thank you Tim for sharing your time with us. University College Dublin (UCD) today announced the commencement of a €4.8 million development project to construct a new state-of-the-art facility incorporating the AgTechUCD Innovation Centre (ca. 890 sq.m.) and the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub (ca. 120 sq.m.) at UCD Lyons Farm. Funding for the facility is being provided by Enterprise Ireland, through the Regional Enterprise Development Fund, UCD and a philanthropic donation from Bimeda, a global manufacturer and distributor of veterinary pharmaceuticals and animal health products. UCD Lyons Farm, the University's research and teaching farm, located in Co. Kildare, is a fully functioning farm comprising of 250 hectares of land, with dairy, beef, sheep, equine, crop and environmental research, teaching and commercial facilities. Professor Alex Evans, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science said, “It is so exciting to see the development of the AgTechUCD Innovation Centre and the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub at UCD Lyons Farm. This represents a new phase in UCD's commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship and outreach in the areas of agriculture, food and veterinary medicine. This farm-based facility will co-locate educators, researchers, innovators and service providers in a single location allowing them to work together on enhancing Ireland's capabilities and progress in agricultural and veterinary sciences.” The AgTechUCD Innovation Centre will promote and accelerate early-stage start-ups and SMEs with disruptive innovations in the agri, agtech, agrifood and veterinary sectors, as they build their innovative businesses into leading enterprises creating jobs. AgTechUCD also runs an annual accelerator programme dedicated to agtech and agri-food start-ups and SMEs. The second programme commenced in October with 12 start-ups from across Ireland participating. Niamh Collins, Director, AgTechUCD Innovation Centre said, “As the only on-farm workspace hub in Ireland focused on promoting and accelerating agri-businesses and start-ups the AgTechUCD Innovation Centre will assist client companies to access on-farm experimental facilities, enabling them to test and trial products and services in a real-world environment. Clients will also have access to office and lab space, preferred access to UCD food processing facilities, and facilitated introductions to VCs and business angels, mentors and corporate partners.” The establishment of the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub will provide a national facility for dairy herd health education, research and consultancy and is an important strategic development for the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine. Donal Tierney, Chairman of Bimeda Animal Health said, “We are delighted to be associated with the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub and the contribution it will make to the development of the Agritech sector in Ireland. Bimeda is an Irish owned company founded 50 years ago. Our association with UCD Lyons Farm in establishing the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub recognises the contribution the agricultural sector has made to the success of Bimeda worldwide.” Professor Michael Doherty, Dean and Head, UCD School of Veterinary Medicine said, “We are delighted that construction of the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub has commenced at UCD Lyons Farm. Dairy herd health is an important element of UCD's One Health initiative which is focused on maximising the health and well-being of people, animals and the environment. We are looking forward to collaborating with Bimeda as an industry partner in research activities focused on furthering our understanding of the health of dairy herds.” He added, “In addition The UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub will support the delivery of state-of-the art training to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine.” The development of the UCD Bimeda Herd Health Hub will also support the provision of UCD's flagship distance-learning graduate programme, the Graduate Certificate in Dairy Herd Health. For this interview we are going back to the Balkans and more specifically to Pristina, the capital of Kosovo where I had the great honour to speak to Uranik Begu, the Executive Director of Innovation Centre Kosovo. We again had the great honor of attending and speaking at ThinkTech - Kosovo and while being there I seized the opportunity to speak to many interesting people who are seeking to dramatically change the situation in this country for the better. One of these people is Uranik Begu who with the Innovation Centre has helped thousands of startups, hundreds of products and through its many events managed to support many, many ICT businesses in the country. I felt that Uranik and the centre are well placed to assess how Kosovo is evolving - specifically when it comes to getting more people into technology. The conference we spoke at was called ‘Building Bridges' and it was very inspiring to hear the many notable guests speak about the bridges they felt needed to be built. Among others we had the Minister of Industry and Innovation speak at this event and I, for one, was very impressed with the drive, ambition and energy of the young people attending to change the situation in their country for the better. Uranik was a great spokesperson for these people and I sincerely hope you take the time to listen to what he had to say. So with that - please enjoy Episode 52 - ThinkTech Kosovo with Uranik Begu.

Richard Celm, Co-Founder & Executive Program Director at Startupbootcamp, Australia joins Andy and Dominic on this week's episode of Business Without Bullsh-t. With a multifaceted career history driven by an ingrained entrepreneurial spirit and a hunger to constantly challenge himself, Richard's CV is a very impressive read: from selling Skateboards and investing in eatfresh.com in Australia, to managing Investment Funds and establishing the award-winning Accelerator London startup Innovation Centre in London and serving as an Army Reserve Major in command of 117 men in Afghanistan, Richard's work has earnt him a wealth of knowledge and experience which he currently pours into Startupbootcamp Australia, the world's largest industry-based startup accelerator program. The conversation goes deep as the three talk about the realities and intricacies of the startup world, which sectors Richard is currently excited about as well as valuable insight into what makes a strong startup team and what it really takes to be a successful entrepreneur in today's climate. Usually, we'd stop there, however, we recently came to realise that there's always so much of our chats with guests which we don't end up including in the show, chat which may be less about business but nevertheless, well worth a listen. So in light of our epiphany, we thought we'd try something new by adding a brand new chapter to our show. Some might call it the outtakes, but as Andy likes to say, it's less business, more bullsh-t! And so we kick off this new chapter with Dom's and Andy's rants about their annoyances with having to deal with banks and stockbrokers during COVID while Richard talks about Army life in Afghanistan and his thoughts on how society can recover from the war (the latter definitely not being bullsh-t, just to make that clear) Sounds interesting, right? Pull up a chair and press play. www.startupbootcamp.com.au Business without Bullsh-t is powered by Oury Clark.
