Today's episode is a breathtaking story of courage, healing, and the radical choice to seek joy after unimaginable loss.I'm so honored to share the journey of Abigail Carter, a writer, artist, and one of the most soulfully brave humans I've ever met. After losing her husband in the 9/11 attacks, Abby spent years learning how to live with grief. But when the buzz and blur of life became too much, a quiet whisper inside nudged her toward something new.So she listened. Fast forward...She packed up her life and moved to a charming little château in the sun-drenched countryside of southwest France. Yes, France! Picture golden fields of sunflowers, deep breaths, and slow mornings with coffee and birdsong. It's here that Abby began again. But this is not just a story about moving to France. It's about moving forward. About what happens when we follow the gentle pull toward something more, like more peace, more purpose, more joy.Now Abby has turned her home into a retreat space for women over 50, creating a haven where others can come to rediscover their creativity, reconnect with themselves, and begin their own next chapters. This conversation is full of heart and wonder. We talk about slowing down, building meaningful community, and what it really means to start over on your own terms. If you've ever felt the urge to change your life, to seek beauty after heartbreak, or to step into something wildly new, Abby's story will light a spark in you.Come listen. It's a reminder that no matter where you are, it's never too late to begin again. Thanks for listening to Speaking of Travel! Oneika Raymond is hungry. And, luckily, she's headed to Mexico City, one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the world — and a place she always finds herself coming back to. There, she visits three eating and drinking spots that connect her to the layered flavors and history that give Mexico City its particular sabor, or flavor, to deepen her understanding of the dynamic capital. Oneika starts her day off early with a sunrise float through Xochimilco, an historic and active canal system perhaps best known for its weekend parties on the water. But, Oneika's guide, Anais Martinez, the founder of Devoured Food Tours, is here to show Oneika the quieter side of Xochimilco: its farms, or chinampas. Oneika and Anais tour a working chinampa, where Oneika picks fresh produce for a farm-to-table breakfast. Over the meal, Anais shares how Xochimilco once nourished most of Mexico City — and how its role continues to evolve as a vital piece of the culinary scene. Then, Oneika heads to the beating heart of Mexico City's food scene: its bustling streets. She meets up with Natalia de la Rosa, a local food and travel journalist at Tacos de Mixiote Castelán — one of Natalia's go-to street food taco stands in her neighborhood of Juárez. Natalia shows Oneika how to order and dress up mixiote tacos — a taco you'll be hard-pressed to find outside of Mexico. Then, they sit down to discuss the importance of street food to the fabric of daily life in Mexico City.   After a full day of eats, Oneika ends her tasting tour back at her hotel, the JW Marriott Mexico City Polanco, for a digestif. She takes part in a private mezcal tasting at the hotel's Tahona Room, the first-ever mezcal tasting room in the city. Oneika's guide, Julie Wharton, Tahona's bar manager, explains how the different regions and families of mezcal producers in Mexico infuse each spirit with a unique flavor and story, all of which deepens Oneika's appreciation for the eating and drinking traditions of Mexico City she thought she knew — and leaves her hungry for more. Experience Mexico City's transformative eating and drinking traditions for yourself. Born and raised in South Central, Michelle knows her neighborhood inside and out - but she still takes the time to explore like a traveler when she documents her bike rides on her TikTok, @miche1ada. To showcase the past and present of historic South Central, Michelle hops on her glittery blue bike for a ride up South Central Avenue, one of the longest roads in the city. She begins the tour at the intersection of South Central and East Slauson Avenue, where she quickly points out the Snack Shack, a red and yellow stand that's been serving burgers and fries since 1941. Michelle's first stop on the tour is the original site of the Dunbar Hotel, where jazz legends like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington stayed when they performed next door at Club Alabam between the 1920's and 1940's. Today the hotel is a home for elderly community members, though its historic brick facade, lobby, and grand entryway have been preserved in recognition of the Dunbar's significance to the neighborhood. Michelle pays tribute to the rich history of the avenue before moving on to grab breakfast at Delicious at the Dunbar, a restaurant serving a mix of soul food and Mexican specialties. From there, she sets off on foot down Central Avenue to take in the community-informed murals being installed by South Central Arts as part of the Green Alleys Network. While there, Michelle bumps into artist José Cruz and South Central Arts founder Will Flores, who share how the project is both inspired by and reflective of the community that call South Central home.To end the day, Oneika and Michelle sit down to discuss the benefits of slowing down to really get to know a place and how local organizations are helping Los Angeles visitors and locals alike do just that. To read full episode transcripts from About the Journey and see photos of each featured destination, head to About the Journey on Marriott Bonvoy Traveler. How the Holocene Framework Works, a case study

Today, I'm revisiting one of my favorite episodes of The Travelers, #183, an interview with Jonathan and Quinn Button from Life out of the Box, a company that takes the Tom's shoes model — but instead of shoes, it's local artiisanal crafts, such as bracelets and apparel, handmade by locals — and for each sale, a portion of the proceeds goes towards providing supplies to teachers in that very same local area. And I love this, not only because education is the most important cause, in my opinion, and so their mission is very close to my heart, but also that they literally followed Holocene's 8-stage process to transform themselves from aspiring entrepreneurs to successful, world travelers and thought leaders in their field. They've found success and fulfillment in who they transformed themselves into using Curiosity and Creativity to find transformation. This is Holocene. So I'm really excited to delve back into this case study from episode 183, so you can see how this transformative experience framework works.

[2:23} When I was a kid, I wanted to be Marco Polo. He travelled the world and experienced things and he didn't have a trip advisor nor did he have guidebooks. He went and the world opened up to him [3:08] Here you are, going to one of the sites that everyone wants to go to, Machu Pichu, but you are not talking about the ruins of Machu Pichu, you are talking about a girl whose shoes don't match and a pile of potatoes. [5:11] I was a Hollywood screen writer for thirteen years, and I was miserable. I loved writing as a medium but I couldn't do it. [6:49] I checked into a monastery to do a silent retreat and I was allowed in for one week. [7:30] My younger sister called and informed me about a new travel show in a public radio. I recorded what happened during my silence retreat which got me a spot as a regular on the show. [8:45] We have done photography and writing, not only to share our experiences and thoughts but also to experience the world we are in. [9:50] If you travel with your whole self, you become curious about other people and go back to the child in you, and ask questions which open up your potential for creative involvement with the world. You open up to having authentic exchanges with people. [10:50] All of us, in one way or another are in sales which sometimes leads to a zone of inauthenticity (12:05] You are bound to make mistakes but being genuinely interested in other people personally and their culture leads to opening all kinds of doors and possibilities and people will share [12:42] Communication of any kind, doesn't have to be a win- lose, but a chance to connect in a more humane manner. [15:04] It is important to understand the cultural interactions so as to try to accommodate and not expecting that people will accommodate to us. [17:09] Everything you do, from the moment you wake up, you are standing on the shoulders of people who came before you. [18:14] You can plan to go to the oldest place you can find and experience the life of your ancestors and you will suddenly be connected to something larger than yourself [19:10] I would recommend to go to Galapagos Islands because there you will have a different relation with animals for the rest of your life [22.52] We are always asked what our favorite place is but you cannot compare two different experiences because they both great. [25:03] We have seen people arrive in a country that they have never been to before and they get emotional and naturally find their way around [26:44] …………………………………………… Thank you to our June Sponsor: &Marketing U Solopreneurs and small businesses often struggle to create effective digital marketing programs. This episode sparked out of a realization we had recently about a throughline that connects everything we do as creators: transformative travel. We dive deep into what transformative travel is and why it's so important, as well as share some of our most transformative travel experiences. We'll also talk about how this realization is going to guide and shape the direction of the podcast going forward. We've been getting at this idea in one way or another through this podcast, our blog, and presence on social media. But we think we've finally hit the nail on the head of what exactly we want to champion in the world of travel, and life in general. It's a great conversation, enjoy! These conversations are annotated and edited by James Hill in his new book Andrew Carnegie’s Mental Dynamite: How to Unlock The Awesome Power of You. James is a Napoleon Hill scholar. He uses complementary annotations throughout the epic Hill-Carnegie conversation that formed Hill’s best-selling book, Think and Grow Rich, to offer a journey of self-exploration using Carnegie’s three principles: self-discipline, learning from defeat, and the golden rule. He demonstrates that the transformation that takes place through these lessons is similar to the mindset shift that travel affords. Learn about the genesis of fear. Jonathan Kalan takes us on his journey of international travel, journalism, entrepreneurship and co-founding “Unsettled”—a global travel community of 2,000+ people from 80+ countries who are redefining the terms of their own work and lifestyle.  Jonathan explains how, after college, he moved to Tanzania to open a pizza shop, and eventually transitioned into international journalism for major outlets like the BBC, Al Jazeera, and New York Times. After unexpectedly getting caught up in both the Egyptian coup in 2013 and the Al Shebab attack on the WestGate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, and seeing dozens of people get killed, he began heavily reflecting on his ‘privilege' and how he could make the biggest impact on the world.  He tells the story of meeting his co-founder and ultimately doing a TED Residency to incubate the idea for his company “Unsettled”, and delivering a TED Talk at the end that. Jonathan then talks about the evolution of Unsettled, the steps taken to prioritize diversity and to ensure that participants are connected with locals in the ground, and how they facilitate that in places like Beirut, Lebanon. He then explains the types of travel experiences currently offered by Unsettled for one week, two weeks, and month-long durations.  He then explains Unsettled's virtual “Lifestyle Incubator” program that helps participants audit themselves, envision their ideal career and lifestyle, and then create an achievable action plan with timeline and accountability mechanisms to achieve it. Because travel has changed my life in so many varied ways, I know that it's transformative; when I talk to three other people who believe this, like for this Episode 152 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I'm even more sure about how transformative travel can be. If you're able to rearrange your budget to get travelling then go and do it! In this episode I start off speaking with Dean O'Shea who runs a business devising trips for mostly corporate professionals with the hope that they'll be transformational - and it sounds like it's working. Dean gives me a couple of examples of people he's already helped to have some major life transformations as a result of particular travel experiences. I then chat with Nate Hake who used to be a trial lawyer in the United States. These days he's travelling the world - he was about to head to Tblisi, Georgia when we spoke - and his own life has been substantially transformed through his travel experiences. As an Aussie I'm proud to say there were Australians involved in this transformation, too! Finally, I talk with Fiona Galloway who uses the tag line "transformative travel" to describe the tours she runs. She's passionate about the power of travel to transform lives in so many ways.
