Episode 6: Nazeem Hussain   The son of Sri Lankan migrants, Nazeem Hussain honed his comedic chops in the suburbs of Melbourne in the 1990s, though as you'll hear, he started giving it a crack when he was very young, right on his front doorsteps as people passed by. After his father left the family, it was his fearless mother who taught him how to use humour to get bullies off his back. And a star was born. Since then, Nazeem has performed around the world, created his own TV show ‘Legally Brown', hosted his own Netflix special ‘Public Frenemy' and written a children's book to celebrate his journey into parenthood. This episode will have you laughing, leaning in and leave you feeling lighter.   TWO AM I Listen Curiously CREDITS   Hosts: Jack Riewoldt and Shane McCurry   Thanks to our guest Nazeem Hussain   To learn more about Nazeem: Nazeem on Instagram Nazeem on Facebook Nazeem on TikTok Nazeem on X Nazeem on YouTube Nazeem Hussain website   Links from this episode: Nazeem Hussain Melbourne Comedy Festival 2024 Netflix special 'Public Frenemy' Legally Brown Nazeem on tour 2024   Find TWO AM I on social media here: TWO AM I YouTube TWO AM I Instagram  TWO AM I Tik Tok TWO AM I LinkedIn TWO AM I LinktreeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nazeem Hussain is stand-up royalty in Australia and a perennial headliner of festivals at home and abroad.  But perhaps his biggest gig is being a dad to two young kids.   Naz and Hame laugh a lot in this episode, but Naz also generously shares stories from his childhood, which largely saw him and his sister raised solo by their Mum.  He talks about seeking out father figures as a kid, and now as a father himself, the search for dadding wisdom continues (which mostly consists of him reading just the first few pages of tons of parenting books!)   Naz is a guy that obviously takes his dadding gig really seriously, thinks deeply about how to nail it everyday, and peppers Hame with some great questions of his own.  The guys swap tips on how to safely throw a kid in the air, lament the sheer panic of being poorly judged if your kid acts up in the playground, and debate the Newtonian aspects of gravity as a metaphor for constant inescapable love. Of course. Naz has created, written and starred in hit TV shows like Orange is the New Brown and Legally Brown, hosts a bunch of great podcasts, most recently The Pineapple Project, has a stand-up special on Netflix, has a released a brand new kids book and regularly pops up as a guest on pretty much every funny TV show in Australia. He's also just a really great guy, and we massively appreciate him sharing his dadding stories with us. Show Note:  To cure Hame's super sloppy hearsay plug for Naz's latest special, HERE is a link to it - it's on youtube and it's free! And lastly, at risk of repeating ourselves…. Thanks for all the lovely emails.  We really do appreciate people taking the time to get in touch and sharing their thoughts and stories with us. The lawyer-turned-comedian and television creator, Nazeem Hussain. If you’re anywhere near TikTok you’ll see that Nazeem’s sketch shows Legally Brown, which first screened on SBS, and Orange is the New Brown (Channel 7), have gained a whole new, obsessively loyal audience. But Nazeem’s not thinking too much about creating any television right now. He’s just become a father for a second time and his stand-up show, Hussain That? is currently playing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival before he takes it around Australia. In this episode, we revisit a story Nazeem told me in 2015, in which he and his family narrowly escaped death. We also talk about his problem with punctuality, and how former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, once sent him fun sized Snickers bars.As usual, I start off by asking Nazeem, how he thinks his colleagues would describe him. SocialsTwitter - Adam ZwarFacebook - Adam Zwar More from Out of the Question on Nearly.com.auMore about Out of the Question: https://www.nearly.com.au/out-of-the-question-with-adam-zwar/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. What an intelligent human. Nazeem is funny, witty, honest, open and he cares. To be honest I was a bit nervous to interview Nazeem, I knew he was smart, like I mean, really smart. He used to be a lawyer, before he was a comedy genius. I’d heard him being interviewed before and was not only smart but witty and fast. Before recording this podcast we’d never met each other at all (that always makes me a little extra nervous). But I had absolutely nothing to be nervous about; he was very sweet. I can see what he’s so popular and Australia loved him on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. He’s one of Australia’s comedic stars. He’s best know for his show Legally Brown, which became an iconic comedic series. Here’s a clip from Legally Brown where he’s playing a Mumbai Prince and he’s speed dating girls that were totally unaware that this was a prank. Every single other person in the scene is an actor, it’s so funny. In this interview he shares a few of his behind the scenes secrets. If you want giggle; check out the skit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlmaV1nsG-oThis guys highly motivated; he’s a TV personality, actor, comedian, he’s got a couple of podcasts on the go. One’s super new one: Rouge Son (you’ll hear us talk about it) where he visits Sri Lanka at a pivotal time both politically and culturally. Literally while he was in the air flying over a new government was elected. And Nazeem himself is part of a marginalized group (only 8% of people in Sri Lanka are Muslim) which meant he was potentially in danger, under the governments previous rein disappearances of minorities were rife. You can listen to it here: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Nazeem-Hussain-Rogue-Son-Audiobook/B08FBJCSMXHe’s also an ambassador for Polished Man; a charity that aims to end violence against children, you can get involved here: https://my.polishedman.com/lola-berry We also talked about the movie LION, you can watch the trailer here: Lion trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RNI9o06vqo I hope you enjoy this interview, it was a lot of fun to chat to this absolute legend with a fast witty mind. Nazeem Hussain is an Australian comedian, actor, television and radio presenter. He is best known as creator and star of both television comedy shows Legally Brown and Orange is the New Brown on SBS and Channel 7. He furthered his household name on “I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” on Channel 10 where he spent 6 weeks in a South African jungle to raise money for InTouch Multicultural Centre Against Domestic Violence. His Netflix special Nazeem Hussain: Public Frenemy began streaming worldwide in 2019 to global acclaim. He made his American TV debut as an official correspondent for both seasons of the hit Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World” and was also invited to perform at the prestigious Montreal ‘Just for Laughs Festival' as a part of Kevin Hart's LOL network. A regular on international stages, Nazeem has performed around the globe, including sell-out seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, London's Soho Theatre, all across New Zealand, Paris, Belgium, China, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States (including opening for Dave Chappelle in New York City), and a homecoming show in Sri Lanka to 2,500 people, including the Prime Minister and his wife. He has the courage to tackle issues like racism in Australia, political humour, race relations, Islamophobia and social commentary (on mainstream Australian television mind you!) through his artistry as a comedian. How dare he?! He's also a part of the Desi Illuminati. What's the “Desi Illuminati” you ask? Well I don't know. But I want to be a part of it. Nazeem has single handedly made me feel like there may be a space for me in the Australian Entertainment Industry landscape after all and that if he can do it, maybe I can. He of course, calls me, a “glitch in the matrix” - whatever it is, we are both proud and equally stunned by each other and this is well, a bloody good laugh. Enjoy!
