Comedian Nikki Glaser and I spoke on the phone at 3:30 PM ET on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, not long before she was set to appear at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. At the time, the prospects of Donald Trump becoming president of the United States of America seemed slim, but we discussed that, the political climate and how it influenced her incisive TV show Not Safe with Nikki Glaser, why comedians are often called upon to discuss socio-political issues, some people's bizarre worldviews, and other things too. She is best known for her comedic abilities but in her new breakout role playing Leslie, on the Emmy winning HBO series Euphoria opposite Zendaya and Storm Reid, King showcases a much more dramatic side of herself. In this role, King pulls from her early life watching family members battle addiction and triumphantly overcoming. It is from that resolve and resilience that King offers a dramatic perspective and newfound depth in this character.Nika has recently starred and executive produced her first feature film, Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot being released in theaters nationwide on July 4th.  Inspired by the powerful true story, this film follows Donna and Reverend Martin as they ignite a fire in the hearts of their rural church to embrace kids in the foster system that nobody else would take. By doing the impossible--adopting 77 children--this East Texas community proved that, with real, determined love, the battle for America's most vulnerable can be won.King's comedy has landed her roles on Kevin Hart's Guide to Black, the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada and hosting Nika King & Friends, a monthly show at the Improv Lab in Hollywood CA. She has also act, wrote and produced on award winning webseries Funny Married Stuff, which is currently streaming on KweliTV. About Joe Devito: Whether taking on relationships, his Italian-American family, or current events, Joe DeVito's dead-on timing, unexpected twists and sheer flights of lunacy make him a favorite at clubs and colleges across the USA, and at the top venues in New York City. After spending a decade as a journalist and advertising writer, Joe gave into his coworker's demands to try performing so he could find fame, while they finally got some work done. Since then he's appeared on television more than 150 times, including Comedy Central, The Late Late Show (CBS), Last Comic Standing (NBC), AXS-tv's Gotham Comedy Live, Comics Unleashed, E! I am delighted to welcome back actress, comedian, and writer Gina Brillon to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Gina Brillon was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. The Puerto Rican actress, comedian, writer, and mom has been a stand-up comedian since she was 17. Her sophomore one-hour Amazon Prime Video special, Gina Brillon: The Floor is Lava, won a Gracie Award in 2021 and was nominated for an Imagen Award. Her half-hour special, Easily Offended, was one of the top shows from HBO Latino's Entre Nos franchises and streams on all HBO digital platforms. Gina appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The View. She also starred in episodes of ABC's The Conners and CBS's Kevin Can Wait. In 2012, Gina Brillon became the first (and only) Latina winner of NBC's Stand Up for Diversity Showcase. The following year, the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival named Gina a “new face.” Her writing appeared in The New York Daily News and The New York Post. She also co-hosted the Mess in Progress: The Homegirls Guide to Self-Help podcast with Katherine G. Mendoza. Gina became a household name when she auditioned for America's Got Talent (AGT) in 2021. Her comedy received four “Yeses” from judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Heidi Klum. Her humor impressed the country, and she became the first Latina comedian to reach the AGT season finale. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Gina Brillon spoke on how AGT changed her life, starring in Disney+'s Dashing Through the Snow alongside Lil Rel Howery and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and helping comedians harness their craft with her stand-up comedy workshops.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jakes-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.
