This episode of Well Played was recorded before a shooting in New York City on Monday in which the NFL headquarters may have been the target. Police say a gunman armed with a long gun killed at least five people in a Manhattan office building, including himself. While a motive has not been confirmed, authorities say a note found in the shooter's wallet referenced the brain disease CTE. We want to note that week's episode includes conversations about football and the NFL that were recorded prior to news of the shooting. Mr. Taylor Swift – aka Travis Kelce – singlehandedly brought us Christmas in July with a 13-photo Instagram dump featuring mostly him and Taylor. https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/10/30/eva-de-matos-on-bend-it-like-beckham The podcast explores how Bend it Like Beckham humorously and poignantly explores themes of identity, tradition, gender, sexuality, multiculturalism and Britishness. Bend It Like Beckham follows Jess, a British Indian teenager who dreams of playing football despite her family's traditional expectations. Set in a diasporic area of Asian immigrants and 2nd generation children the podcast discusses the associated inter-generational themes that permeate the film. The podcast also discusses the film's specificity to 2003 and how the political climate may have influenced the film's representation of multiculturalism.

Today, dreams of soccer stardom clash with a host of familial and cultural expectations. Writer Jessie Tu (Women's Agenda, “The Honeyeater”) is here to break down how "Bend It Like Beckham" (2002) changed the culture, showcased heartfelt father-daughter relationships, and everything happening in that one dizzying nightclub scene. Plus, is this another movie where the sports-romance is not between the obvious characters? Just sayin'.

Today's episode is the second half of my recent discussion with author Grace Barnes whose fascinating new book it titled: National Identity and the British Musical — From Blood Brothers to Cinderella. In this conversation we explore how British national identity has, and often has not, been dramatized in British musical theater, and among the topics that we discuss are the musicals Blood Brothers, Mama Mia, Billy Elliott, The Last Ship, Bend It Like Beckham, and the current smash hit SIX, and, of course, the tremendous impact and domination that the mega musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh have had on the British musical theatre industry. We also discuss why UK critics so seldom give any serious consideration to musical theater , the near complete absence of female voices in British musical theater, and the future of British musicals. Grace Barnes is an independent scholar, director, and playwright who has worked as an associate and resident director on productions of My Fair Lady, Fiddler On the Roof, Into The Woods, Sunset Blvd, The Witches of Eastwick, Martin Guerre, West Side Story, and Guys And Dolls in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. She has a PhD from the University of Technology in Sydney and her previous book is titled Her Turn Onstage — The Role Of Women In Musical Theatre. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation!
