Rick Najera is a creative force whose pen has carved bold, brown lines across Broadway stages, Hollywood screens, and the national conversation on Latino identity. A true original, Rick's storytelling blends sharp wit, deep heart, and fearless cultural commentary. From the bright lights of Latinologues on Broadway—his groundbreaking work that gave voice to untold Latino stories—to the writer's room of In Living Color and Mad TV (where he worked with Key and Peel and Jamie Fox and Jenifer Lopez), Rick has always led with authenticity. His Showtime comedy specials, Diary of a Dad Man and Legally Brown, showcase his rare ability to make you laugh while cracking open truths about family, faith, and identity. A writer, actor, producer, and cultural visionary, Rick's credits span television, film, and theater—including work with Fox, Hulu, Warner Bros., and major studios—while never losing sight of his mission: to elevate the Latino narrative. As the creator and host of Latino Thought Makers, Rick has become a leading voice in the dialogue around Latino excellence and empowerment, speaking across the nation to inspire the next generation, interviewing Dr. Cornel West and Dolores Huerta and Danny Trejo and many more. Whether it's behind the scenes or center stage, Rick Najera doesn't just tell stories—he builds bridges, breaks barriers, and makes sure we all laugh along the way. Latin History for Morons marks the second time he has worked with Leguizamo. He wrote the holiday classic Nothing Like the Holidays starring John Leguizamo. Most recently, he wrote and directed Sweet 15, his interactive Quinceanera that played to audiences in Miami and Chicago. With two Writers Guild nominations for his work in comedy, he is a rare writer that finds brave stories that make you laugh. His new historical novel Love Truth and Loyalty will be published in the fall. Learn more about Rick at www.ricknajera.com.
A few months ago, Hillary wrote a piece for The Atlantic on what she called “the weaponization of loneliness.” It was inspired, in part, by an important and alarming advisory issued by the Office of the Surgeon General on an underreported crisis in the United States: an epidemic of loneliness that has contributed to increased rates of opioid and alcohol addiction, domestic abuse, suicide, gun violence, as well as diabetes, heart disease, and more. To that list, Hillary added the rise in divisive, even toxic and dangerous, political engagement. On this week's episode, Hillary talks with U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy about his own experiences of loneliness as a child, the causes and effects of the loneliness epidemic, and his “We Are Made to Connect” tour, which seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of social isolation and create opportunities for connection on college campuses. Then she speaks with actor, writer, director, and comedian John Leguizamo, whose work in theater, film, and television helps ease our sense of loneliness and isolation. From his Broadway hit Latin History for Morons to his roles in Super Mario Bros, Chef, and Encanto, and his MSNBC travel series Leguizamo Does America, John has won over audiences while also forging a path for Latino performers who are vastly underrepresented on stage and screens in the United States. Hillary talks with John about the math teacher who nudged him towards theater, performing for and breaking bread with inmates at Rikers Island, and his tireless efforts to make sure Latin people are represented in politics, the arts, and in our understanding of American history. Guests: Monica Mannion, Carlos Raba, and Jesus Reyes Synopsis: We're celebrating a lot during this week's Food, Farms, and Chefs Radio Show, including the history behind Cinco de Mayo. We began this week's show with Personal Chef, Monica Mannion, then Carlos Raba who is the Chef and Owner of Clavel Mezcaleria in MD, and we ended our show with Jesus Reyes who owns Luna y Sol in NJ. One resounding (and very meaningful) fact regarding each guest is their closeness to family. More specifically: They discussed how they learned from, and were inspired by, their family. Throughout the years, those same close-knit relationships blossomed into co-founding business ventures; traveling the globe; learning new cuisines and culinary techniques, and creating meals together in family-owned restaurants. This week, we celebrate not only their individual achievements, we're celebrating their heritage, accomplishments, and continuing endeavors as a whole.

John Leguizamo has been in well over 100 movies and TV shows, including the recent Academy Award-winning animated smash Encanto. That is impressive enough but John's also a writer who has created and starred in a handful of powerful, hilarious one-man shows over his career. This includes his 2019 show, Latin History for Morons. During the show's run, he joined Bullseye to talk about it. He also chatted with us about creating works of art from a sometimes painful past, fighting for Latinx representation in Hollywood, and some of the comedians who have inspired his craft. He also got very personal about a certain incident that changed his life, and we are honored that he chose to share it with us.

In today's wide-ranging conversation with Bianca Marroquin, one of the issues she addresses is that of language and accent. Growing up near the Texas border, she had the opportunity to learn both languages. So in addition to being the first Mexican woman ever to land a leading role on Broadway, she is also the only one ever to do Chicago in two different languages. Yet in the 18 years since the Broadway debut as Roxie Hart, she has still faced confusing and ignorant statements from casting directors and reporters, for example, regarding their expectations of what a Mexican is or should be. At the end of this episode I'll shine a spotlight on this week's Hispanic Icon, John Leguizamo, who has a few things to teach us about Latin History. But first, Bianca and I discuss an issue we are all dealing with as artists: the state of theater and the arts during this pandemic and what that might look like in COVID's aftermath. Since childhood Bianca's life has been one filled with change. Though she was born in Monterrey, she grew up living on the Mexican side of the border in Matamoros, yet went to school on the Texas side in Brownsville. She first studied dance at the age of three but by high school was also learning flamenco, jazz, and tap. For college she wanted to study in Spain but her father insisted on a technical college in Monterrey, where she majored in Communications with the intention of becoming a reporter. But she soon found her dancing feet again in a flamenco company as well as various festivals and concerts. She had made a name for herself, so much so that by the time she was doing Roxie Hart in the Spanish version of Chicago in Mexico City, she won best actress and caught the attention of Chicago's Broadway producers. And in 2002 she came to NYC in the show and role that has come to be the one constant in her life. John Leguizamo jokes about guilt trips in his Netflix special, "Latin History for Morons".
This week, the Friends weren't able to record an intro together. But their guest is pretty epic. They welcomed Tony-winning actor/writer John Leguizamo, who is now adding director to his resume. He's starring in and directing a new film, Critical Thinking, where he plays a chess teacher who helps inspires a group of low-income Black and Latinx high-schoolers to national chess championship victory. Leguizamo drops by to talk about the film, Latin History for Morons (currently on Netflix), and his ongoing work to advance Latinx representation in film and theater. Actor, activist, author and educator John Leguizamo loves that his comedy makes people feel angry. In his 2018 one-man Broadway show, Latin History for Morons, the 55-year-old star splices jokes with history about the genocide of Native American people, his experience being racially profiled in the United States, and a welter of statistics about the underrepresentation of Latinx people in American media. Born in Colombia and raised in Queens, New York, Leguizamo grew up seeing negative portrayals of Latinx people in Hollywood and in the pages of the New York Times. This feeling of being an outsider, of not belonging, was a power that he eventually came to value—and harness as fuel for his comedy and acting career. In January, Leguizamo sat down with Mother Jones's DC Bureau Chief David Corn onstage at the Comedy Cellar, the historic New York City stand-up venue, to talk about his work, ego, process, and his favorite subject: Latinx history. Corn's interview with Leguizamo is one in a series of several notable guests featured over the next three episodes. It's a special summer interview series with a very “2020” origin story: Earlier this year, the coronavirus pandemic stalled work on a new podcast, co-produced by Mother Jones and the Comedy Cellar, but not before three fascinating guests joined Corn for in-depth interviews about art, politics, comedy, and the philosophies that infuse their work. These chats were too good to simply shelve; in the coming week's you'll also hear from music icon Debbie Harry, and talkshow host Samantha Bee.
Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's epic (and very expensive) musical has moved from the stage to screen thanks to Disney+. A musical as big as Hamilton deserves a big discussion, a cabinet battle, if you will. The Friends are joined by actor and composer Heath Saunders, and theater critic Kelundra Smith. They discuss how Hamilton hits differently in 2020 than it did in 2015 when it premiered, how it's OK for art to be problematic, and whether Hamilton could win the Oscar. This episode was recorded on June 6. Here are links to things the Friends talked about in this episode. In this episode, we share a few last thoughts on the Identity series, including our experience attending the UU fellowship two weeks in a row. Leslie reports that he's quite confident about his choice to no longer call himself a Christian - it feels like an act of protest. We talk a little bit about what has changed for us, and for the podcast, in 2018 since we moved our identity from Marriage Startup to Glimmering, and added the "live justly" aspect to our focus. Next is a back and forth "Top Ten Extravaganza" of stuff that impacted our lives in 2018. Laura's autoimmune brain fog is fully on display, as Leslie mentions several major highlights of the year that she didn't even think of, like our trip to Italy and getting a dog. Finally, we look forward to the New Year and what 2019 will bring both professionally and personally. 1945's Scarlet Street reunited director Fritz Lang with stars Joan Bennett, Edward G. Robinson, and Dan Duryea and cinematographer Milton Krasner from the previous year's The Woman in the Window. Unlike that film however Scarlet Street ran afoul of censor board's across the country that objected to it's "obscenity," "indecency," "profanity," and "sordidness." Despite that, the film did well at the box office making back nearly three times it's budget. Dan and Vicky discuss this lesser heralded noir film and it's provocative stars. They also discuss the demise of Filmstruck, Dan's emotional visit to an immigration detention center and Vicky's Thanksgiving staycation. Recently seen includes Latin History for Morons, Bohemian Rhapsody, the Suspiria remake, Overlord, 1968's The Devil Rides Out, Pacific Rim Uprising, and series The Haunting of Hill House among others. We'll meet you on Scarlet Street for Hot Date 78! Have a listen and leave us some feedback or a star rating.

House of Cards wraps up with closure for fans of the show and a great performance from Robin Wright. The Great British Baking Show is truly nice. It's pleasant, the baked goodies are beautiful and there's no nastiness. It's very nice. John Leguizamo's Latin History for Morons is funny, enlightening, fast-paced and not family friendly. It is an excellent way to spend an hour. All three are on Netflix. Rock 93.7

Episode #28 Notes: I’d miss wild shit. Recorded: 11/14/18 Episode Length: 43:35 This week we discussed what we had been up to in the last few weeks. Bex brought up her trip to Dallas; meeting up with the gals from @SpillTheChisme. Who schooled her on what to eat at Whataburger. Sean watched Latin History for Morons, and asked the rest of the group to help him create a curriculum that would have been more useful in High School. Bex asked for the guys to explain what would have been the most useful when they were younger. Jake asked the group their feelings on Stan Lee's death and mentioned future cameos. Wrapping up the episode was a question from Cornelius Swart and Andru Morgan of @PricedOutUSA. They asked, "Explain to Me what you would miss the most if your neighborhood was gentrified overnight?" Two recovering addicts (Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo) have their Saturday night card game interrupted by a love-struck parole officer (Bobby Cannavale) with major boundary issues. Written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole, Good People), the madcap comedy CRAZY EIGHTS features Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale (Blue Jasmine, “Boardwalk Empire,” PoA's Gun Show), Tony winner John Leguizamo (Latin History for Morons, Ghetto Klown, Moulin Rouge), Oscar nominee Rosie Perez (Do The Right Thing, Fearless, "The View"), and Kevin Hogan ("Mr. Robot"). Stay tuned after the performance for an interview with David Lindsay-Abaire and the cast, moderated by Artistic Director Claudia Catania. CRAZY EIGHTS was recorded live at BRIC House in Brooklyn, New York.
Nelle Nugent is an independent Broadway producer. She has overseen productions such as Amadeus, Morning's at Seven, The Elephant Man, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, and Dracula; awards she has won includes Tonys for all five listed shows. She and producer John Schwally started the east coast chapter of the Producers Guild of America in 2001. Nelle Nugent has produced more than 60 Broadway, touring, Off-Broadway and West End productions including: Home, The Dresser, All's Well that Ends Well, Time Stands Still, Sly Fox (revival), The Trip to Bountiful American Buffalo (revival), and Latin History for Morons. I was lucky enough to get to sit down with Nelle to talk to her about some of her biggest hits and how Broadway has changed since her days as a PA, as well as . . . What can make a great play fail. How raising money for Broadway has changed over the last fifty years. What she did to overcome the resistance she got for being a female Producer. The chance encounter that led her to produce Dracula and WHY it became a hit (Hint: it didn’t have anything to do with what was on the page.). When reviews matter and when they do NOT. What we often forget is that Broadway is not that old of an industry, and people like Nelle helped lay the foundation for the work we’re all doing now. We not only owe Producers like her a debt of gratitude, but if we listen closely to how they got where they are today, we might just learn how to get to where we want to be tomorrow. What can be said by now that hasn’t already been said about Ryan Coogler’s FUBU superhero epic that continues a long history of…absolutely nothing else like it.
