So I always kind of throw the question right back at the host and say, you tell me what organ you want and I'll tell you what it happens. Where are the big ones? I mean, we always think about the brain. We think the brain about in a medical sense, in a psychological sense. When we talk about having being sleep deprived or not getting good quality and quantity sleep, it adds things to depression. It adds to things like anxiety. It's going to be a risk factor for things like stroke. So it's horrible when we talk about the heart needless to say that when we talk about that poor quality and quantity sleep, yes, you're going to be at a higher risk for things like coronary artery disease, things like heart failure, things like arrhythmias. And the way I kind of summarize it is that at nighttime, what happens to our blood pressure and our heart rate? Well, they tend to take a break. They tend to dip down a little bit so they could take the stress off the heart. It's beating so hard during the day, but when you have poor sleep at night, you're never giving your body a chance to rest, especially if you have undiagnosed sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea that affects 30 million people in t...

Instead of sweating the small stuff, what if we honor the small stuff–with curiosity, with wonder. In this episode of Emerging Form, we talk with podcaster and video editor Flora Lichtman about her work as host for the listener call-in podcast “Every Little Thing,” which was essentially an “exercise in curiosity.” We discuss who can best tell a story? How do we most courageously and interestingly get from point A to point F? How do you build stakes? How does collaboration help? And how do we know when to switch mediums to tell a story the way it wants to be told? Flora Lichtman is a host and managing editor at Spotify. Most recently, she created and hosted a listener call-in podcast called Every Little Thing. The show ran for 5 years and had more than 200 episodes. Previously, she wrote for the Netflix show, "Bill Nye Saves the World,” and co-directed the Emmy-nominated video series “Animated Life” on The New York Times Op-Docs channel. (They lost to Oprah.) Before that, she hosted The Adaptors podcast about climate change, worked as a video editor and substitute host at PRI's Science Friday and co-wrote a book on the science of annoyingness. And long, long ago, she worked for a NATO oceanographic lab in Italy. For the lab's research expeditions, she lived on a ship where apertivi were served on the top deck, hoisted there via pulley by the ship's chef.Flora Lichtman's website: http://www.floralichtman.com/Every Little Thing podcast This is a public episode. Reynolds shares a unique vision of the nodes and their cyclic importance in your life. In this 75 minute presentation, he'll share how you can better work your North and South Nodes and discuss what are the key character-building lessons for the six pairs of Lunar nodes there are and give some ideas on how to implement them. Check Samuel Reynolds' website: https://unlockastrology.com Facebook : Samuel F Reynolds Samuel Reynolds - YouTube And Instagram @sfreynolds Samuel once hated astrology more than other “occult” studies. At 12 years old, when he was a fundamentalist Baptist minister, he used religion to avoid astrology’s lessons. Later, at 23 years old at his Jupiter Return, he realized he mostly disliked astrology because he didn’t know what it all meant. He was born on the “cusp” of two signs and didn’t know which one he was. So, he went to an astrologer. The astrologer’s uncanny insights into his life went beyond the pale of guesswork. Convinced it was all a trick, the newly-minted atheist and academic, at the time, spent 10 years doing charts and studying astrology himself. Now, 30 years later, and his deepest love and life centers around astrology. He consults, writes, and teaches astrology full-time. He has written for Ebony magazine, New York magazine, Tarot.com, Sasstrology.com, Pride magazine, Moonology.com, and The Mountain Astrologer. He’s also duked it out about astrology with Bill Nye the Science Guy on the first season of his “Bill Nye Saves the World” show and featured in Netflix’s “Explained” episode on astrology. He also serves on a few astrology organizational boards, like the International Society for Astrological Research’s board of directors, and he’s an entrepreneur who helps others build their businesses as mind-body-spirit practitioners. He is best known as creator and star of both television comedy shows Legally Brown and Orange is the New Brown on SBS and Channel 7. He furthered his household name on “I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” on Channel 10 where he spent 6 weeks in a South African jungle to raise money for InTouch Multicultural Centre Against Domestic Violence. His Netflix special Nazeem Hussain: Public Frenemy began streaming worldwide in 2019 to global acclaim. He made his American TV debut as an official correspondent for both seasons of the hit Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World” and was also invited to perform at the prestigious Montreal ‘Just for Laughs Festival' as a part of Kevin Hart's LOL network. A regular on international stages, Nazeem has performed around the globe, including sell-out seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, London's Soho Theatre, all across New Zealand, Paris, Belgium, China, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States (including opening for Dave Chappelle in New York City), and a homecoming show in Sri Lanka to 2,500 people, including the Prime Minister and his wife. He has the courage to tackle issues like racism in Australia, political humour, race relations, Islamophobia and social commentary (on mainstream Australian television mind you!) through his artistry as a comedian. How dare he?! He's also a part of the Desi Illuminati. What's the “Desi Illuminati” you ask? Well I don't know. But I want to be a part of it. Nazeem has single handedly made me feel like there may be a space for me in the Australian Entertainment Industry landscape after all and that if he can do it, maybe I can. He of course, calls me, a “glitch in the matrix” - whatever it is, we are both proud and equally stunned by each other and this is well, a bloody good laugh. Enjoy!

It’s [adjective + male name] versus [adjective + male name] on this episode of MinnTrax! Mike Drucker (Nintendo, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Saturday Night Live, Bill Nye Saves the World) brings the first cassette he ever bought, Weird Al Yankovic’s “Bad Hair Day,” to Matt’s door. Matt returns the favor with Steely Dan’s “The Royal Scam,” which Matt calls “the most ‘Steely Dan’ Steely Dan record.” Both artists are hugely influential in their fields, and their skills go far beyond schtick – but what do our host and guest think of their assignments? Then we address some great questions from our community on songs that used to annoy us that we now love, if “Amish Paradise” is inappropriate, and whether or not Weird Al should be in the hall of fame. Stick around for our community song pick, which turned Mike into an instant fan! It's the birthday of Bill Nye the Science Guy, who created the beloved 1990s kids’ show and recently launched "Bill Nye Saves the World" on Netflix.
SPECIAL GUEST: Andrew Katsis (Deakin) Support In Situ Science on Patreon A single tweet can make all the difference, or at least it did for Andrew Katsis, who decided to get involved in the #billmeetsciencetwitter trend. Little did he know that his tweet would be seen by American television producers, who decided to fly Andrew over to LA to talk about this research on the Netflix show ‘Bill Nye Saves the World’. Andrew’s research looks at how bird calls can affect the development of chicks while they still inside their eggs. Andrew’s life in ornithology had a bumpy start as he grew up on his family’s emu farm and was terrorised by the giant birds roaming their property. The birds he studies now are much smaller and more manageable, but no less fascinating. Andrew is also a co-founder of Lateral Magazine, a freely available popular science magazine driven by early career scientists. This episode has a great news item about who American's trust MOST to act in the interest of the public. Dog Science is sticking around due to popular demand and we take a quick look at why puppy Bunsen appeared to lose him mind when presented with a lemon. Our guest is the Amazing Cara Santa Maria, a podcaster herself and pHD student, Cara has been a whole host of TV shows, including Bill Nye Saves the World! Cara also talks about her Science Dog too! The mailbag is back this week, but due to the length of the pawdcast, Woo or Wow takes a break.Bunsen Merch!https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/bunsen-bernerBunsen on Twitter!https://twitter.com/bunsenbernerbmdSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/bunsenberner)
Bill Nye says that when he was in high school, the big skill that students had to learn was how to find information. “But the challenge now is to sort out the information that may not be true.”Greta talks to Bill from the stage at The Collider’s Climate City Expo in Asheville, N.C. Their conversation focuses on climate change, Bill's new Netflix series (called "Bill Nye Saves the World") and combatting dubious scientific claims with critical thinking and an abundance of evidence. And also: Fake tree octopi, bow ties and moon rocks.
Arnold Schwarzenegger famously (and half-jokingly) proclaimed that if you need more than 6 hours of sleep, you should sleep faster. Many successful people claim to sleep very little and use the extra time to be productive. But is this sound advise? I talked with Dr. Lars Dittrich, neuroscientist and former sleep researcher, about sleep. Lars answer questions like What does sleep do? How is it regulated? What are the side-effects of acute and chronic sleep deprivation? How do I know if I sleep enough? How could sleep research inform policies and business practices? Listen to the Full Conversation on Patreon! Summary Sleep deprivation, even only short-term, has significant effects on your cognitive abilities. Just a single night of lost sleep has the same effects as the amount of alcohol that would make driving illegal. This tiredness is believed to be a mechanism that dials down the activity of the brain to reduce the accumulation of metabolites that may damage the brain. During sleep, these metabolites are cleared out of the brain. It is also the time for certain cognitive housekeeping functions, such as memory consolidation. Lars Dittrich (left) with Bill Nye (right) on "Bill Nye Saves the World" Sleepiness is regulated through two parameters: the time since you last slept, and the time of the day according to your internal circadian clock. Both the preferred sleep duration as well as the timing of sleep in the day are different between people. On average we need between roundabout 8 hrs of sleep. If we force ourselves to sleep fewer hours per night than we need, this can have harsh health consequences, from cognitive decline to an increased risk for metabolic diseases - in particular diabetes - and possibly dementia. As teenagers, and when we move the time at which we have to get up to an earlier phase of the internal clock, we are awake at times that our circadian rhythm says is too early. Accordingly, we are more tired, and suffer from some reduced cognitive ability. Because of this scientist wonder whether it would be beneficial to have high school start later. And if we want to get rid of clock changes altogether, it would be better to permanently stick to standard time, rather than having daylight saving time all year round. Anyways, our conclusion can only be to better not take the advice from people like Schwarzenegger on sleep too seriously. I mean, especially someone like Schwarzenegger should know that lack of recovery time kills your muscle gains! Do you have questions, comments or suggestion? So, I was going to be clever and lead in with a Kermit the frog intro and a Fuzzy B Bear joke, but we would probably get in trouble with Henson productions and Disney. So instead, Like sands in the… nope, that’s been taken too. Like a case of athlete’s foot, it is Nerds Amalgamated, here with the latest episode for you all. We hope everyone is safe, with massive fires in Queensland and devastating storms down south, Australia is reminding us of how unpredictable it is. We wish to say thank you to all the people of the various emergency services that are out saving lives in horrendous conditions. This episode we start with Buck and a plane without propellers, in fact it is Star Trek inspired as it utilises an ion drive. That’s right folks, a plane that is taking a page out of science-fiction. So, my fellow Nerds, once again a piece of fiction is moving to the non-fiction section of the library, whoop whoop! Buck and the Professor are both excited about this one, and at some point the DJ gets beamed up by Scotty because he fries the Dilithium Crystals. Aww, for goodness sake man, we canna take much more of this… While the DJ disappears Buck and the Professor talk about Nintendo closing the Nintendo Creators Program. That’s right, people who show video’s containing images of any games etc have had to submit it to the NCP for authorisation. Out of curiosity am I the only one thinking NCP sounds like OCP from Robocop? My goodness, Nintendo are going to give us Robocop in the future!!! I’ll buy that for a dollar. The DJ returns to tell us about how Neon Genesis is coming to Netflix, and some other items that are going to be live action remakes. Let’s hope they don’t screw these up like they did with Deathnote and Full Metal Alchemist. Rest assured though, if they do screw it up we will tell you about it and make more terrible puns. Emily Calandrelli, host of Xploration Outer Space and correspondent on Bill Nye Saves the World, thinks there aren't enough female science geeks in fiction. She wants to help change that with her Ada Lace series of children's books. “What I wanted to do was create a character that was female who had these types of adventures and did these types of science experiments,” Calandrelli says in Episode 318 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast.
What if you had the power to make the places you imagine real -- so real that people can walk through them and touch them, and millions of strangers could see the setting that once only existed in your mind? My guest this week is James Connelly, who designed the sets for shows like The Voice, Bill Nye Saves the World, the Teen Choice Awards, and many more. When he's building worlds for television, he draws on his memories and experiences and daydreams, mashing together influences from across his life to invite the world into his imagination.By the way, if you're heading to DragCon in LA this weekend, I hope you'll join me for two panels! On Sunday, I'm be hosting a game of Dungeons and Dragons played by BenDeLaCreme, Erika Klash, Kitty Powers, and Fraya Love. And on Sunday, I'll be hosting a fun friendly chat about tabletop gaming, featuring a panel of queer and ally gamers sharing recommendations for finding games and people to play with. And mark your calendars for our next Sewers of Paris live chat -- it's on Saturday, May 19th, at 2pm Pacific. If you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, click "Support the Show on Patreon" to join the folks who make the podcast possible for as little as a dollar a month. Or you can support The Sewers of Paris for free by leaving a review on your podcast platform of choice -- that really helps people find the show.

In this week show our topic is Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Our guest is Joe Balog, who obtained a B.A. in Sustainable Business and took several courses on this subject. In spring 2017 a representative of the maligned conglomerate Monsanto appeared in the TV show 'Bill Nye Saves the World' which is available on Netflix. During the episode entitled "More Food, Less Hype" host Bill Nye pushes the consumption of GMOs and portrays Monsanto as a victim of bad press. He also shows no scientific data to support his claims that GMOs are good for society and that there is nothing wrong with them. In our show we usually debunk conspiracies, but in this case we must side with people who demonize GMOs as Bill Nye in his popular show claims to be scientific, but supports a positive perspective regarding GMOs with no scientific data, experiments or new information. This is what alternative new sources would call disinformation. Especially, as the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Monsanto Dr. Robert T. Fraley and the farmer on the show proclaim that GMOs are safe, again with absolutely no evidence. They also use the internet as a way to change the conversation and post commercials for their products disguised as articles. Please check out their articles on their websites below which support the premise of the Netflix program, these articles show clear bias and might help you make up your mind about this subject: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/what-ive-learned-from-bill-nye_us_5900c122e4b06feec8ac927d http://findourcommonground.com/blog/bill-nye-saves-world-examines-safety-sustainability-gmos/
