Potential to Powerhouse: Success Secrets for Women Entrepreneurs
We're in luck today! We are joined not only by one powerhouse woman but two, Lily Diamond and Rebecca Walker. These two women joined forces to co-author a book called “What's Your Story? A Journey for Everyday Evolution.” First, we will be speaking with Rebecca, she is an American writer, feminist, activist, and you likely know her as the daughter of Alice Walker, author of “The Color Purple.” Rebecca made it her mission to revitalize feminist movements to ensure the fight for women's rights were heard, she knew when she or other people were not being treated correctly. Lily Diamond is our second speaker today. She is a writer, photographer, and advocate for harnessing the power of digital media. Lily is all about democratizing wellness and empowering women through storytelling. Lily began questioning the ideologies and beliefs she grew up with and starting changing those perceptions as she got older. Rebecca and Lily have paired together, creating this awe-inspiring book, with the call to challenge the status quo, to think about the way in which we view race & gender, and to think about the way in which we navigate our journeys through the world and offer hindsight regarding who we are as humans. IN THIS EPISODE: [03:08] Rebecca starts off today by revealing which role she took on as a child; rule breaker or rule follower. [08:25] Lily joins the conversation, divulging her status as a rule breaker or follower as a child. [12:34] Comparing the meaning of the statement: being a rebel versus challenging the status quo. [16:46] The story that Rebecca and Lily have created in their book and how they are wanting to be perceived. [20:31] A moment of awakening in Rebecca's life began in her early twenties, participating and immersing herself into feminist movements. [29:31] Lily's pivotal moment as a young adult, questioning how she was perceiving beliefs and principles in life and starting to change those perceptions. [42:54] The day Lily and Rebecca met was perfectly aligned in their lives. [46:53] Rebecca feels a strong sense of duty to help people express their real feelings and to be authentic to their true selves. [53:02] After finishing the book, what was the biggest lesson they've learned through that process? KEY TAKEAWAYS: Rebecca always felt from a young age that she knew when she or other people were not being treated correctly. She would take on the role of becoming an advocate for herself and others. Rebecca made it her mission to revitalize feminist movements to ensure the fight for women's rights were heard. Lily began questioning the ideologies and beliefs she grew up with and starting changing those perceptions as she got older. The relationship between Rebecca and Lily has evolved into a powerful friendship and comradeship, from being open and honest with each other to authentically supporting one another. QUOTES: “Our relationship has evolved into one of powerful friendship and comradeship.” - Rebecca Walker on her friendship with Lily “From a very young age, I felt the need to either speak about those things to other people and try to be an advocate of some kind, on their behalf, or to just note in myself that what was happening to me was not okay.” - Rebecca Walker “When I started to listen to my peers talk about their experiences of feminism, it always came that they felt there was a kind of rigidity and a kind of totalizing ideology that made them very uncomfortable and that was an awakening.” - Rebecca Walker “I think many of us have this desire to be accepted and to belong and that transforms often into an ability to not be completely honest with ourselves.” - Lily Diamond I think the most significant thing that I have learned that has also been a gift in the process of creating “What's Your Story?” is that it takes time and it takes extraordinary patience.” - Lily Diamond CONNECT WITH US: Find Lily Diamond on Instagram, Rebecca Walker on Instagram, and “What's Your Story?: A Journey for Everyday Evolution” Book Check out our website, Potential to Powerhouse, for more details and to learn about past, present, and future guests. Connection, slowing down, being more present, & returning to nature. These ideas keep presenting themselves over and over again here on the podcast in multiple episodes across a variety of topics. Slowing down and being more present in our everyday lives—with ourselves, with our children, with the seasons—I know many mamas would like to do just that, but how? How can we take care of ourselves and be present as moms when we are so busy and fed constant contrary messages about #allthethings we need to buy, do, and be? Maybe the answer is hidden inside of us…within our senses. And in our pantry, our kitchen, and our garden…with the natural foods and plants that are already there. Our guest today, Lily Diamond, is here to talk about idea s like these from her beautiful recipe book & blog that will encourage us to slow down, tune into our senses, and learn more about how plants can nourish us both inside and out. Sign-up for my FREE masterclass: http://bit.ly/masterclass-biz I love when I meet readers and people who follow The Healthy Maven and they're surprised that I'm pretty much the same human in person as I am online. I suck at lying so even if I wanted to live an alternate persona, there's no way anyone would buy it. Of course, I tend to have the same reaction when I meet people in real life. I'm not going to lie, I've been disappointed a few times, but most of the time it's pretty much as expected. And then sometimes you meet someone you follow and they're not only as cool as their online persona, but actually cooler. This, my friends, is Lily Diamond. I had the privilege of meeting Lily a few months ago during our trip with Earthbound Farms. Meeting Lily was like meeting a way cooler version of myself while simultaneously hoping she doesn't think I'm a huge weirdo (I am for the record). She's just one of those people. I think what I admire most about Lily is how she keeps it real. I've always valued authenticity. Not in the 2019 sense of overexposure and word vomit vulnerability, but in being thoughtful with your words and sharing with intention. So today on the show we're chatting about honesty, Lily's own health and wellness journey and how she's navigated many shifts in her life. It's a good one! In Episode 11 of Interrelate, Sarah Woehler talks to Lily Diamond, blogger, author of the cookbook, Kale & Caramel, and podcast co-host of What’s Your Story? In the conversation, Lily opens up about the unique bond she had with her late mother, why deep connections with women are so fundamental to her, and how leaning into grief is what allows us to overcome it in the end.
In a world where we’ve become all about the likes and the followers and the curated feeds and all of that, it’s hard to know if we are really connecting with each other online. And if we are, it's hard to tell if that connection is feeding our deep need to connect or feeding our addiction to escape and compare. A leading force for good is writer and photographer Lily Diamond. Lily is the author of Kale and Caramel: Recipies for the Body, Heart, and Table. But she has also started quite the movement on social media with the hashtag #honestinsta. Take a listen as we discuss how to be honest on social media and why it’s so important, being the space holder of a movement, vulnerability and how to reach out in a way that is proactive instead of destructive, the importance of being a witness for each other, the joy of keeping it simple when it comes to self care, and the power of mental sanitation.
Lily Diamond on Essential Oils, Natural Healing With Herbs, Dealing With Grief, And Self-Love
Lily Diamond is a successful food blogger, writer and photographer who recently released her first book, Kale and Caramel. In her book she shares recipes for fresh food and how to use ingredients from your home kitchen to create beauty products - like facial washes, scrubs and moisturizers - as well as personal stories from her life. Lily’s book also serves as a tribute to her late mom, and in it she shares memories and reveals how she coped with her massive loss. Listen to today’s episode of I Want Her Job: The Podcast to hear more about how Lily runs her freelancing business, her brand and her following.
Lily Diamond had a bohemian upbringing in Maui, thanks in part to her mother, who was an aromatherapist, herbologist, and author. Her mother’s untimely passing led to a spiral of sadness, and Lily channeled her grief into writing and cooking and eventually into her blog, Kale & Caramel. Lily shares her story, her wellness advice, and some wisdom from her new book, Kale & Caramel: Recipes for Body, Heart, and Table. For “The Cookbook Call-In,” we talk to Impatient Foodie blogger and author Elettra Wiedemann about her recipe for Pink Spaghetti with Beet & Ricotta Sauce, aka pink spaghetti. Today’s show is presented by Le Cordon Bleu, La Brea Bakery, and Organicgirl. Radio Cherry Bombe is powered by Simplecast
This week on Unorthodox, we can't be tamed. Our Jewish guest is Eddy Portnoy, senior researcher and director of exhibitions at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, whose new book is Bad Rabbi: And Other Strange but True Stories from the Yiddish Press. He tells us how he stumbled upon these colorful, less-remembered characters and tales—so many of which seem to involve Jews rioting—and why it's important for a community to examine the good with the bad to truly know its history. Our gentile of the week is Washington Post religion reporter Sarah Pulliam Bailey, who dropped by the studio in early October to tell us about growing up in a conservative, Christian environment in Indiana, the intricacies of covering religion while being a person of faith herself, and the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. This week on Unorthodox, we've got food on the brain. Our first guest is Kerry Brodie, founder of Emma's Torch, a cafe in Brooklyn that employs and trains refugees and political asylum seekers. She tells us about her unlikely transition from government work to culinary school, what she learned about refugees by working alongside them in the kitchen, and why she believes food is such a powerful uniting force. Our second guest is Lily Diamond, the Maui-born blogger behind Kale and Caramel, and the author of a brand new cookbook by the same name. She tells us about fleeing her laid-back Hawaiian high school for Yale, accidentally becoming a food blogger, and how food and cooking helped her grieve her mother's death.
