Many people know of those who have had Near Death Experiences. Not everyone understands them but it's a way for our souls to escape from the body in times of great distress. Our guest, Lisa Smartt, needed one and it helped her survive her childhood. She'll talk about it for the first time publicly. She and Jim Duncan, a musician, producer and songwriter have worked to create a beautiful song, "Free to Fly", and are looking for other NDE stories to write songs and music about. There work is being supported by Life After Life.
Some people think that dying people increasingly speak nonsense, losing their grip on reality. But Lisa Smartt, a linguist trained to pay deep attention to words, realized as her father was dying that what he was saying was coherent and deeply moving, pointing to a world which she little understood and inviting an exploration of what he might be talking about. After his death, she hurtled headlong into a mission; collecting final words, convinced they had something profound to offer those of us who are not dying. The Final Words Project and her book, Words at the Threshhold: What We Say as We're Nearing Death, are the beautiful result.

This episode is a beautiful exploration of the words spoken at the threshold of death. Based on the research by Lisa Smartt in her book "Words at the threshold: What we say as we're nearing death", we bring to light the many layers within the words that arise during that most sacred time. Many of us have or will have the experience of being with someone as their soul prepares to leave this world. How beautiful is it to have an insight into how to make the most of that time and to find reassurance in the words we hear from our loved ones. Have a listen for more. The experts on NDE's share their story on how a near-death experience has changed their lives, and what they experienced. Joined by Dr. Raymond Moody & Lisa Smartt, Dr. Eben Alexander, Tricia Barker, and Julie Ryan. Is it a sign we have more work to complete on this earth? To allow us to gain insights from the heavens? In this compilation we talk all about what happens DURING a NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, what individuals have taken away from them and HOW they came back to the earth with an ANGELIC perspective. Lisa Smartt, MA, is a linguist, book coach and the author of Words at the Threshold: What We Say When We’re Nearing Death, a book based on the data she has collected through the Final Words Project, which she co-founded with Dr. Raymond Moody, who coined the term “near-death experience”. Many of us fear death, but it may not be what we think. In this episode, Lisa beautifully describes the common language patterns of individuals who are dying. She also explains the connection our spirits and bodies have with poetic language like metaphor. Listen, and gain clarity and peace surrounding death. In this episode, we discuss: How witnessing her father’s last days sparked Lisa’s study of the language of the dying The work of Lisa’s collaborator, Dr. Raymond Moody, who coined the term near-death experience (NDE), as revealed in his book Life After Life Seeing and and speaking with deceased loved ones as we die The beauty of nonsensical language and unintelligible speech How our dreams, our bodies and the experience of dying speak in metaphors Tuning into the language of people passing so you can help nurture the peace of one’s soul transition More links for Lisa: The Final Words Project with Dr. Raymond Moody and Lisa Smartt
Lisa Smartt, MA, is a linguist, educator, and poet. A person’s last words often take on an eerie significance, giving tantalizing clues about the ultimate fate of the human soul. Until recently, however, no one had systematically studied end-of-life communication by using examples from ordinary people. Linguist Lisa Smartt changed all that with the Final Words Project, which she established in conjunction with world-renowned afterlife expert Raymond Moody. The project chronicles the linguistic patterns and themes behind the words people speak as they leave this world behind. Smartt's book Words at the Threshold: What We Say as We’re Nearing Death (New World Library, March 15, 2017) shares the findings of her research into this unchartered territory. Deep Dives in Extraordinary Times - A podcast with Marie Trout
Lisa Smartt is an author of best-selling books, a poet, and a linguist. Lisa's research on the Final Words Project has broken new ground. Realizing that her father's language went through a personality change when he was close to dying, Lisa decided to research a missing area of our knowledge base: the language of the dying. Her book, Words at the Threshold catalogues and analyzes some of the patterns of liminal language. Since 2013, she has worked closely with Raymond Moody (who coined the phrase and conducted initial research on Near Death Experiences and who is the author of the book Life After Life). In this podcast, we also talk about the many little deaths each of us go through in life - when relationships end, when circumstances throw us off, and when we lose someone. Ultimately, we talk about the potential for transformation when we - again - find, and connect to, the light. http://www.finalwordsproject.org/ https://lifeafterlife.com/book-coaching/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/marie-trout/message

Much can be learned about the consciousness of dying individuals by paying attention to their language. One can develop an appreciation for speech that seems nonsensical by understanding that a dying person may be experiencing two different realities simultaneously. Join me and my guests, Dr. Raymond Moody, and Lisa Smartt. Dr. Moody coined the term Near Death Experience and The New York Times calls him, "The Father of the Near-Death Experience (NDE)". Dr. Moody is THE leading expert in researching NDE. Dr. Moody is the best-selling author ofLife afterlifewith over 13 million copies sold, andGlimpses of Eternity.Dr. Moody discusses his search for the ageless question of whether death is an annihilation of consciousness or the passage of the soulor mind into another dimension of reality. After 75 years he is CONVINCED...of what? Find out! Lisa Smartt, author ofWords at the thresholdand founder ofThe Final Words Projectshares her investigation into the language of those who are preparing to transition into their next life where there are no earthly words to describe. her father, a skeptical and rational man described seeing angels, spoke in poetic and metaphoric language. Through years of research and interviews of thousands of people, worldwide, there is proof that the spirit survives physical death and how we live in this world matters. There is a life after life to be experienced much deeper, richer, more joyful, and peaceful than what we can see. Together we discuss life, death, life after life, language, consciousness, and love. Dr. Moody and Lisa will share their projects, what they want people to know about death and dying, and an introduction totheir newly created online resource the "University of Heaven."
If you've ever wondered if there's an afterlife and answers to life's greatest questions, then do we have the show for you. Today I'll be talking with one of the world's leading authorities on NDE's, Dr. Raymond Moody, the best-selling author of Life After Life who actually coined the term Near Death Experience (NDE). And Lisa Smartt, literacy expert and the best-selling author of a brilliant book on final words called Words at the Threshold, about their elevating new project, The University of Heaven. And that's just what I want to talk with them about, about life beyond life and answers to life's greatest questions from near-death experiences, shared death experiences, and even after-death experiences. Key Points Discussed: How Dr. Moody learned about near-death experiences. What happened when Dr. Moody went to medical school after becoming an expert on NDE's. How did Lisa Smartt get interested in people's final or dying words? What can we learn from the language of nonsense – people's last words, or words of delirium? What can we learn about life, and life after life, from Near Death Experiences? Who is Anthony Cicoria and what happened with his near death experience? What are the different levels of experiences people have with NDE's? What are some of the common things that take place in NDE's? What does it mean that death is a transition into another reality? Are people who have had NDE's on a mission when they come back? What can we learn from early greek philosophers about NDE's? What can we learn from Plato and the cave allegory about near death experiences? What happened to Carl Jung and how did it change him? What do people start saying before they die? What is a living dream and what can we learn from it? What does it mean that final words has meaning and patterns to it? What happens to people when they're out of their body? What do we realize when we leave our bodies? What do near death experiences teach us about life? What are shared death experiences? Is it definitive that there is an afterlife? How do shared death experiences prove there's an afterlife? What can our kids teach us about life after life? What can we learn from kids about reincarnation? Lisa Smartt is the author of Words at the Threshold, a book dedicated to the final words of the dying. When Lisa's father became terminally ill with cancer, she began recording his conversations and noticed that his personality showed some curious changes. Once a skeptical man with a secular worldview, he developed a deeply spiritual outlook in his final days — a change that was reflected in his language. Lisa came from a background of linguistics training and majored in linguistics at UC Berkeley so this provoked her to track his final words. http://www.finalwordsproject.org/

My guest this week is Lisa Smartt, whose recent book, Words at the Threshold, examines what those who are dying say as they approach the end of life. This is a really important topic, as Lisa reveals that the dying are often communicating much more to us than we might realize. By paying attention in the ways she recommends, their final words in this life become more comprehensible. Topics we explored together included: How language reveals one's mental processes Lisa’s father’s experience that piqued her interest in final words The common occurrence of a person announcing a “big event” as they near their death The value of writing down what our loved ones say toward the end of their life Common metaphors, constructions, and premonitions that show up in final words Synchronicities at the threshold of death that can guide us to better living The appearance of "takeaway figures" in the language of the dying (describing the deceased at their bedside) Ways that those who are dying try to signal to loved ones that their death is nearing The emergence of “terminal lucidity” near the end of life Nonverbal communication with those who are dying Being open to the mysterious The existence of something accessible that is beyond us (or beside us) What those who are dying need from us as we sit with them The wisdom the dying have to offer Lisa's book is available here (a percentage of sales made through this affiliate link will be used to support the podcast, at no additional cost to you): Words at the Threshold: What We Say as We're Nearing Death You can find a free chapter of her book on the Final Words Project website. Raymond Moody, MD, PhD In 1975, coined the term near-death experience in his book Life After Life. For half a century, Dr. Moody has researched some of life’s greatest mysteries. As both a PhD in philosophy and an MD, Dr. Moody has had a strong interest in how medical realities intersect with the ineffable realm of philosophy. In his multiple roles as author, professor, public speaker and grief counselor, he has heard thousands of accounts of near-death, shared-death and after-death experiences. SRRG: Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes - Today's Guest: Lisa Smartt
Hello Beautiful Light-filled Souls! If you don't know me, I'm Tricia Barker, and I have a YouTube channel called Near-Death Experiences: Healed by the Light and a memoir titled Angels in the OR: What Dying Taught Me About Healing, Survival, and Transformation. This is the audio from one of the early videos I uploaded to YouTube about three years ago. It discusses common psychological/spiritual changes after a NDE including becoming less materialistic, experiencing out of body episodes, psychic abilities, increased intuition, childlike states of love for all people, and electrical sensitivities and energy surges. Most NDErs immediately feel like an immortal soul residing in a finite, material form. Many NDErs no longer fear death and want to be of service to others, if only to remind others of their connection to the world beyond form. In many ways, NDErs become more childlike and have to learn how to live again as many of the old rules for living no longer apply or make sense. It is a brief description of the angels I saw during surgery. My memoir launched this April 2019 exactly 25 years after my near-death experience. I was an agnostic at the time of my death, and that moment in the afterlife changed everything about my life. Angels in the OR is available in several outlets as an e-book, paperback, and Audible. The University of Heaven, an online platform with courses and conversations about near death, shared death and after death experiences, was just launched by Dr. Raymond Moody, PHD, MD, and Lisa Smartt. It is in honor of Dr. Moody's half century of research into these areas and includes contributions from leading edge writers and thinkers ranging from Kenneth Ring to Eben Alexander to Mary Neal to Hearts of Space composer Kevin Braheny. The content will include descriptions of out-of-body experiences, being in the presence of a light, appearance of deceased friends and family members along with a life review and the feeling of unconditional love and spiritual peace. Many of the guest faculty are physicians who bring the dual perspective of being scientifically-minded as well as being spiritually transformed by their research and experiences. Please join us Thursday to learn more about this fascinating research and The University of Heaven.
Our guests today are Dr Raymond Moody and Lisa Smartt. Ramond Moody pioneered modern research into life after death, Near-Death Experiences and Shared Death Experiences.

It often sounds like gibberish as our departing loved ones suck in their last breath of life. But those last words may hold the key to their passion and a glimpse into what is on the other side of the veil. In this interview we hear of dying people who speak of great events, crowds of people, loved ones, and even helpful, radiant strangers standing on the threshold. The things we love most often await in our transition. People, with their last words, refer to the big dance they are to attend, or the great art opening, or the golf tournament they are experiencing at that moment. Their passions in this life are brought forward into a vivid beyond-this-world reality- though it may sound like complete nonsense to those listening. One example is a dying Vaudeville Magician who told his hospice worker to witness his greatest magic trick, whispering “Watch me disappear!” He died a moment later! In this joyous and heart warming interview, Lisa Smartt shares enchanted, profound and even silly ways we choose to exit this world as expressed in our final words. Why is it that people speak differently when they're dying? Lisa Smartt's father had always been a skeptical and rationalist person. But three days before dying, her father announced, "The angels say only three days left now." He spoke of a "green dimension" and his room crowded with people who were unseen. He also spoke in a poetic and metaphoric language, describing the big art show that was approaching and the boxes he had to carry for his ceramicist wife of 54 years. She listened in awe as she transcribed his final words that not only painted a world unseen but were rich in language patterns that appeared to be unique to the end of life. Formally trained in linguistics, Lisa was deeply curious about the language she witnessed. When she discovered little or no research had been done into people's final words, she established The Final Words Project (2014) with Dr. Raymond Moody to learn more. Raymond, who coined the term near-death experience, has had a lifelong interest in language and joined Lisa on this exploration into last words. Her book, Words at the Threshold, offers the early findings of their investigations. In Words at the Threshold: What We Say as We're Nearing Death, Lisa Smartt decodes the symbolism of those last words, showing how the language of the dying points the way to a transcendent world beyond our own. She shares the compelling language she has heard and the coherency that emerges in even the most puzzling phrases. She also provides tools for more meaningful communication with loved ones who are at the end of life.
I have had many guests on my show who had a near-death experience or who wrote about other's experiences of being on the other side and coming back. No one, however, has focused in on the words of those near death. This is so unique that I want to quote my guest: I listened in stunned silence as my skeptical and rationalist father described seeing angels in his last days of life. Three days before dying, he announced, 'The angels say only three days left now.' He spoke of a 'green dimension' and his room crowded with people who were unseen to me. He also spoke in poetic and metaphoric language, describing the big art show that was approaching and the boxes he had to carry for his ceramicist wife of 54 years. Some might think he was hallucinating. Others might realize that he was seeing the next chapter in his existence and preparing to move forward without fear. Please join us Thursday to learn how to communicate in a meaningful and comforting way with your dying loved ones.
