Karen and Carmin talk about what stages they identify with in their childhood and how that has translated into their adult hood
Nationally recognized consumer money and small business expert Louis Barajas knows that when it comes to working with underrepresented groups, it takes more than just financial literacy on its own… you have to address the limiting beliefs of the community, too. Check out this week’s episode to learn how he’s working to change the complexion of wealth for the underrepresented by bringing financial healing into the community.
Louis Barajas was thrown into finance at the age of 13, when he had to help his dad fill out a tax return. That same 13-year-old never imagined that he would be the #1 financial Latino expert in the United States. Recently named Top 100 Financial Advisor by Investopedia, Louis’s journey to the top wasn’t easy. The road was filled with cultural challenges, late-night hours, and brining honesty to the finance world. Louis left a prestigious firm in Newport Beach to return to East L.A. He wanted to give people in the barrio financial dignity. He saw how financial institutions treated his parents, and he didn’t want that type of practice to continue. His mission was to treat the people of East L.A. how he would want anyone to treat his parents—with respect and dignity. Louis struggled. It challenged him to change the mindset of the barrio. So much so, that he “quit” a total of 5 times. He had had enough. But his mission and purpose in bringing financial dignity and financial education to the barrio superseded his frustration. He cleverly used financial therapy and cultural jokes to help his clients understand finance. Progress was being made. Today Louis manages the businesses and finances of some of the most iconic internationally recognized Latino celebrities. But don’t worry. If your abuelita walked into his office seeking financial advice without an appointment, Louis would make her feel like his #1 client. Just as he would want anyone to treat his parents in the same situation—with respect and dignity. Thank you for listening. My guest today has found an impressive balance between creating a successful advisory firm and giving back to his community. Louis Barajas is the founder of Wealth Management LAB, a multi-family, office-style advisory firm that specializes in providing financial advice and business manager services to entertainers and other celebrities in the Latino community. The first Latino minority to join the National Board of the Financial Planning Association over a decade ago, Louis built his advisory firm over time, from trying to serve Latino small business owners in the barrio where he grew up to writing books and teaching financial literacy to the Latino and broader communities. In this episode, Louis shares the stages of his unique path into financial planning that culminated in him starting his own solo practice, as well as how he stayed positive and overcame the setbacks he faced along the way. Listen in to learn how Louis built his success by focusing not on financial planning but on what he calls financial doing, the immutable laws that everyone in his firm follows, and what he says is the key to expanding financial advice to a broader range of underserved consumers.
