Most of us grew up with the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” It's simple, it's memorable, and it works at a basic level. But as adults, Joe Rockey has been noticing a hard truth: that rule can fail fast in real relationships—because people value different things, receive care differently, and can completely miss a gesture that would have meant the world to you.So Joe and Father Boniface Hicks press into the upgrade Jesus gives at the Last Supper: “Love one another as I have loved you.” That standard doesn't start with your preferences. It starts with Jesus—His self-emptying love, His patience, His sacrifice, and the grace that makes that kind of love possible in us. The conversation reframes Christian love as more than being “nice” or being reciprocal; it's learning to see and serve the other person as Christ sees and serves them, in a way that builds communion rather than control.Key IdeasThe Golden Rule helps children learn the basics, but adult relationships need more than “my preferences projected onto you.”Jesus sets a higher standard: love as He loves—not simply “love your neighbor as yourself.”That love isn't willpower; it's grace-driven transformation (sanctification) into Christlikeness.Real love requires mutuality: listening, learning, appropriate vulnerability, and choosing what actually serves the other.God's love is personal and present: Jesus knows us fully and loves us anyway—so we can stop “performing” and start growing.Links & References (official/source only)None explicitly referenced with clear official/source URLs in this transcript.CTA: If this helped, please leave a review or share this episode with a friend.Questions or thoughts? Our Daily Scripture Readings and Reflection: Loving our neighbor means recognizing their humanity. Today's Gospel challenges us to see every person as someone like ourselves. That includes the child in the womb. Authentic love recognizes dignity, protects life, and seeks the good of others, especially the most vulnerable.

Holocaust survivor Nate Leipciger joined me for a powerful Conversation with Alan, sharing his story of survival, resilience, and the responsibility to bear witness. At just 11 years old, Nate was forced into ghettos and later Auschwitz during the Nazi occupation of Poland. He survived unimaginable conditions alongside his father, including a death march, before being liberated in 1945. His mother and sister were murdered during the Holocaust. In this conversation, Nate reflected on his memoir The Weight of Freedom, the vivid memories he continues to carry, and the bond with his father that helped him survive. He also spoke about his lifelong work as an educator, including his involvement with March of the Living, and his mission to ensure future generations understand not only what happened, but why it must never be forgotten. At 98, Nate's message remains clear and urgent: love your neighbor, accept your fellow man as your equal, and choose to be an upstander, not a bystander.Bernice Leipciger also joined the conversation, offering her perspective on Nate's journey and the importance of continuing to share his story.

* You can get the sermon note sheet at: https://family-bible-church.org/2026Messages/26May31.pdf * We are entering into the second half of our study of the book of Ecclesiastes. Over the past two weeks, we have considered the importance of Remembering Our Creator in Our Labor and in Our Season of Life. In each of those studies, we saw the importance of redeeming time and the importance of our consideration of others. * Today, we turn to that Consideration as our focus ... Remembering Your Creator in Your Consideration of Others. * As we considered the topic of Remembering Your Creator in Your Pursuit of Wisdom, we saw that there are actually two "wisdoms" - "Worldly Wisdom" and "Heavenly Wisdom." One of the primary distinguishing factors between these two wisdoms is who is targeted beneficiary of our actions. "Worldly wisdom" is self-focused because we are truly our own god. "Heavenly wisdom" focuses upon God and others as it seeks to be aligned with the greatest commands: to Love God and to Love Your Neighbor. * Paul encouraged believers to have the "mind of Christ" which would be revealed in how we treat, or consider, others. Philippians 2:1-5 states, "Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." * Today, we will examine how this mindset is the antithesis of that of those who have a worldly mindset. * This message was presented by Bob Corbin on May 31, 2026 at Family Bible Church in Martinez, Georgia.
What is the first piece of information you want to know about a person? What is the first thing that you notice when you meet them? For those in sales, the most relevant thing about you is how much money you have, and they often tell by looking at your dress, particularly your shoes. For others, it's what kind of job you do, or whether or not you have kids, what color you are, or your denominational affiliation. Collecting this information isn't necessarily a bad thing, but how you treat them based on what you think you now know about them might be. Do you assume once you've noticed their brand-new, brand-name shoes that these people are more valuable to know? Do you think that because you know where they are from you know what they are really like?
God designed us to flourish in “love one another” relationships. That's why it's impossible to cultivate mental health in isolation. Yet all of us know that relationships can be a complicated blessing, with the temptation to keep our hearts hidden or take too much responsibility for others. Join us for this episode of Soul Talks as Bill and Kristi discuss how to navigate caring for others while also accepting your own limitations and needs. Celebrate the powerful conclusion of our B.L.E.S.S. series as we explore what it means to share your story and live as a witness for Jesus. On Pentecost, ordinary people changed the world simply by telling what God had done in their lives—and you can too. This message unpacks a simple, practical framework for sharing your faith: your life before Jesus, how you met Him, and how He's changed you. You don't need perfect words or all the answers—just a willingness to be real. Discover how your story can become a powerful way to bring hope, spark faith, and make an eternal impact in the lives of others.
There are opportunities all around us to love people well, and maybe there are some that we’ve never thought of before. Here’s one way that can help in any type of relationship.
What does it really mean to serve your neighbor? In Week 5 of our B.L.E.S.S. series, we explore the final letter of our series: S — Serve with Compassion. Drawing from the parable of the Good Samaritan and Jesus' stunning act of washing His disciples' feet, we uncover two simple but powerful actions that separate those who truly love their neighbors from those who simply pass by on the other side of the road. Get ready to be challenged, encouraged, and equipped to stop, drop, and serve the people God has already placed in your path.
In Episode 2 of The Landscape of the White Church & The American Nation, Rev. Dr. Hannah Ka joins Dr. Karl Martin, Ph.D., turning deeper into the question of how faith and national identity intertwine in the United States. If American exceptionalism shapes how we understand the nation, what happens when that belief begins to shape how we understand Christianity itself? In this conversation, they explore Christian nationalism: What it is, why it matters, and how it can shape the way Christians understand both the Church and the nation. Together they discuss: A working definition of Christian nationalism How American identity is shaped by ideas of national origin and “founding stories” The relationship between patriotism, faith, and discipleship How Christian nationalism can shape church life and Christian imagination Signs that faith and national identity may be becoming fused How different generations engage these questions in complex and divided ways What it means to prioritize love of neighbor above political identity This episode invites listeners to consider how deeply our assumptions about nation and faith are formed, and how we might more faithfully follow the way of Jesus in a complex and divided cultural moment. This conversation is part of a special three-part series from First United Methodist Church of San Diego exploring the intersection of Christianity, culture, race, and national identity. Join the discussion and support the work through FUMCSD's Patreon channel. About our Guest Speaker: Dr. Karl Martin is Emeritus Professor of American Literature at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he taught for 27 years. His work focuses on American literature and culture, African American literature, and the relationship between faith and public life. What if one of the most powerful things you could do for the people around you is simply invite them to your table? In Week 4 of our B.L.E.S.S. series, we explore one of the most surprising — and most overlooked — ways Jesus carried out His mission: He ate with people. In this message, we look at the story of Zacchaeus and discover that the moment Jesus chose to share a meal with him was the moment everything changed. Together, we discover how sharing a meal with the people around you can embody grace and enact mission — one table at a time.

Community heals. God delights in it so deeply that He chooses to reveal Himself in the midst of it. In this message, Bill Johnson unpacks the power of fellowship within the people and communities around us. We are designed for connection—first with God, and then with one another. Many of the plans and purposes of God for our lives are discovered, strengthened, and fulfilled in the context of relationship. In that place, there is an invitation to love well. We know that we are called to love our neighbor—not just in word, but in the same way we have been loved by God. When believers show up for one another with intentionality and care, we begin to reflect the heart of Christ and experience His presence through community. As you listen, ask the Lord how you can more intentionally steward the relationships He has given you. Our prayer is that you would be encouraged to love deeply, invest faithfully, and continue building a life grounded in connection with Him and others.

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to lead by serving others? In this message, we explore the powerful example of Jesus washing his disciples feet and how that act of humility changes everything about how we view greatness in the Kingdom of God. Whether you are feeling burnt out or looking for a way to make a difference, this video reveals why service is actually a secret to a more fulfilling life. We dive deep into the biblical foundations of service, looking at the life of Jesus, the work of Mother Teresa, and the specific spiritual gifts God has placed within the church. You will learn about the science of the helpers high and why serving others is a cheat code for personal happiness and community belonging. We also hear directly from ministry leaders about practical ways to get involved, from children's ministry and prayer teams to local community outreach programs like Love Your Neighbor. Service is not just about doing chores; it is an attitude and an act of worship. When we help the least of these, we are ultimately serving the Lord Himself. Who in your life have you overlooked simply because you didn't see their true worth?Pastor Bayless Conley unpacks what it really means to love the people around you. Seeing the lost, offering hope, and recognizing true value. This message challenges you to view others the way God does.
In Week 3 of our B.L.E.S.S. series, we look at one of the most remarkable conversations in all of Scripture: Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. From this encounter, we unpack five powerful truths about what it looks like to listen like Jesus: how listening begins with being intentionally present, how it breaks down barriers that arguments only reinforce, how it discerns the deeper needs beneath the surface conversation, how it creates space for truth to land, and how it leads to transformation — not just in one life, but in a whole community.

What does it really look like to love and serve like Jesus? In week three of the Love Your Neighbor series, Pastor Eric Sebastian reminds us that true, Jesus-centered helping begins with humility. It's about noticing the need, letting go of our own rights, and choosing a personal, sacrificial kind of service. And as we follow His example, our actions do more than meet needs—they point people to Him.

What if the most powerful thing you could do for the people around you isn't something you say or do — but something you pray? In Week 2 of our B.L.E.S.S. series, we dig into the practice that makes everything else possible: beginning with prayer. Just like a building that looks solid on the surface can be quietly failing at its foundation, our efforts to love our neighbors and share our faith can crumble when they aren't rooted in prayer. Drawing from the prayer life of Jesus, the urgency of the Apostle Paul, and real stories of God showing up in unexpected moments, this message reveals three reasons why prayer isn't just the first step in B.L.E.S.S. — it's the foundation on which every other step is built.
Rabbi Amy Bernstein's weekly Torah study class via Zoom - Vayikra/Leviticus 19:1 - April 24, 2026
A meditation on loving your neighbor as yourself begins, quietly, with how you hold your own life. Sit and call to mind three things: something you're grateful for, something you worked hard to earn or become, and something you love simply because it lights you up. Let each one land fully—no deflection, no minimizing. This is what it means to “ought” to love yourself: not indulgence, but honest recognition. Then, gently, extend that same stance outward. Imagine a neighbor—especially one who unsettles you—and offer them the same generosity: their efforts, their loves, their unseen struggles. Notice where resistance rises, where they mirror parts of you you'd rather avoid. Stay there, soft but steady. Let your self-regard widen into regard for them—not sentimentality, but a disciplined, grounded goodwill aimed at their real good.
In week two of Love Your Neighbor, Pastor Zach Wright explores why loving our neighbor starts with examining our own hearts. Before we rush to help, Jesus invites us to recognize our own brokenness so we can love others with humility rather than pride.
Many followers of Jesus want to share their faith but feel unsure, awkward, or overwhelmed by how to begin. In this first message, we explore a better way—one rooted in the everyday, relational approach Jesus modeled. Drawing from Scripture and the B.L.E.S.S. framework, this sermon invites us to see evangelism not as a program or pressure, but as a way of life. Discover how ordinary, intentional habits can help you love your neighbors well and participate in God's mission right where you already are.
Join Pastor Cameron as he shares that God's desire and requirement for His people was always relationship with Him and right relationship with others. Relationship over ritual, relationship over religion, and relationship over human rigor is the key!

Life doesn't always go the way we expect, but what if our interruptions and obstacles are actually invitations from God? In week 1 of our Love Your Neighbor series, Dr. Donna Pisani helps us discover that we are not the Savior in the story; we are stewards of what Jesus has already done in us. As we remember how Jesus met us in our brokenness, we learn to see others differently, respond with compassion, and step into the opportunities God places right in front of us.
