Recorded 12th November 2017 This week we are joined by Kevin La Rue of Macphun - now renamed Skylum Software, to talk about Luminar, Macphun photo software, the change to Skylum Software, Dark Castle, Silicon Beach and and as usual any other stuff that cropped up in the world of Apple and tech over the last week or so. It's quite a long show as Kevin was keen to share with us, so get a brew, settle down and prepare to hear all about things he's been involved with all the way back to the dawn of the Mac! On this week's show: We redid the website. I went through finding and fixing the problems caused by moving the hosting from SquareSpace to WordPress - mostly fixing missing images or broken audio players. I am back to show 25 so there are still some to work through. Also we gave the site a make over with a nicer theme than the basic one we implemented. We haven't 100% done yet but the new theme looks so much better than the previous one. Allison Sheridan, from the NosillaCast podcast, will be at our meeting to present a few great tidbits when it comes to managing and editing photos on your Mac. Adobe Photoshop is the big 800 pound gorilla but it's probably overkill (and way too expensive) for most normal folks. There are other alternatives out there and Affinity Photo is one of the great ones. Allison will present how you can use AffinityPhoto as it's a powerful and capable application for not only most Mac users but for professionals as well. It costs about 5 months of Adobe Creative Cloud's Photoshop making it very affordable. Affinity Photo has great integration with other Mac app using App Extensions found in newer versions of macOS and Allison is going to give us great insights on using this program. This is going to be a great meeting!   And, of course, we'll go over some other current events in the OS X world as well as review some cool Mac & iOS apps and leave some time for Q&A.

It's our last episode of the year (but you'll hear more from us in 2017, we promise), and we decided to give you a little bit more: an XL version of the podcast that runs 15 percent longer than usual, but includes a developer interview about Macphun's latest photo-editing app, Luminar, and a spoiler-riffic discussion (at the end, with plenty of very obvious warning we should add) about the latest Star Wars franchise film, Rogue One. Before Mike and Chas play Siskel and Ebert (or, more accurately, Statler and Waldorf) for the movie, though, we have tech news! The AirPods are shipping (contrary to rumors), Super Mario Run is out, there's an outrageous assault on the Fifth Amendment over an iPhone (again), and plenty of lawsuits for Apple to lose. We talk to Kevin LaRue from Macphun about its amazing new full-featured image editor Luminar, and we encourage our listeners to check it out via a free trial to be found at macphun.com/luminar, and the team have a fantastic sale price on it (and a sweet discount for owners of any other Macphun software) running until the end of the year. For our finale, we then proceed to ruin Rogue One for you (well, if you ignore the vociferous alerts and wander into our penultimate segment) before finally wishing you all a happy holiday season until we meet again on January 9th. Sorry for being a bit overlong, but what's a holiday episode without feeling stuffed? Thanks for listening!

Caleb Pike of DSLRVideoShooter.com is the ultimate MacGyver of DIY video. In this episode Caleb talks about how he built his own affordable Hackintosh. Caleb is kind of like Dr. Frankenstein: he has taken the software brains of a Mac and implanted it into the monster hardware of a Windows PC to create a hybrid machine with enormous horsepower to run FCP X - his video editing software of choice. His blazing fast Hackintosh leaves Apple's Mac Pro spinning its beachball cursor in dazed confusion and gasping in the dust. How much did Caleb’s Hackintosh cost? About $1600 - thousands of dollars less expensive than a Mac Pro. In this conversation Caleb talks about finally ditching Adobe Creative Cloud. He no longer has a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and is getting along just fine without it. He talks about equivalent software that allows him to get the job done without having a monthly bill for the software. Caleb also talks about his philosophy of eliminating things that don’t bring you joy. And after nearly an hour of conversation, we finally get around to talking a bit about cameras and Caleb’s attitude towards gear. Please support our show sponsors: VideoBlocks - an affordable, subscription-based stock media site that gives you unlimited access to premium stock footage. Today’s featured guest is Tony Sweet. I had a blast interviewing Tony and getting to bring his story to you Photo World. Living through the interview, editing the interview, and now listing to it... I am still inspired. Tony reminds me that persistence and forward motion is the best path. No matter the turns you take or the learning experiences you have if you Keep an Even Keel you can look back to see your success but not get hung up on any ups or downs throughout the journey. "When the Student is ready the Teacher Appears." - Zen Buddhists - Tony Sweet After successful careers as a jazz musician/educator, and professional magician, Tony settled on photography as his chosen means for personal expression.
