Painters Christina Quarles and Jenna Gribbon join curator and host Gemma Rolls-Bentley in discussing their methods for constructing queerness in their lives and artworks, the importance of holding a viewers gaze, lesbian intensity, and CAMP! This episodes title is a line from “School Note,” a poem by Audre Lorde.Jenna Gribbon's oil paintings constitute an important new entry in the long lineage of figurative art, extending its narrative possibilities to explore the act of looking. Her vivid portraits, frequently nudes or partial nudes, depict those closest to her, and sometimes the artist herself, in candid poses, during uncanny moments. Her recent work most prominently features her partner, Mackenzie Scott, whose recurrence both personalizes and simultaneously establishes her as a kind of avatar; shifting the focus of the painting away from the figure and toward the way the figure is framed. By painting otherwise fleeting scenes, the artist adds texture, depth, and a sense of permanency to these temporal images, highlighting themes of pleasure, joy, and expanding the lexicon of queer iconography. Recent exhibitions include Living Histories: Queer Views and Old Masters, The Frick Collection, New York (2022); and I will wear you in my heart of heart, FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2021); and Paint, also known as Blood: Women, Affect and Desire in Contemporary Painting, Warsaw Museum of Modern Art, Poland (2019). In this episode of The Tilt Shift podcast, hosts Charly, Andrew, and Chris take a deep dive into the final episode of "The Last of Us". Despite the episode's short - or some would say ... consistent - the conversation is long, as the hosts share their mixed reactions to the show's ending and the series overall. While some wish the show was longer to allow for more exploration of the characters, others appreciated its efficiency in conveying a powerful story focused on relationships and love, which culminates in a "gut punch" ending that sets up season 2. With a blend of analysis, allusions, and insights, this episode of The Tilt Shift offers a thought-provoking exploration of the final episode of "The Last of Us", and the impact it had on both the hosts. Tune in to hear their unique perspectives and insights on this unforgettable show.

If you ever experienced photography before Instagram, then you hopefully got to check out the tilt-shift lens. They were used for a variety of things: architecture, landscapes, and surreal work. It's where the idea of miniatures comes from. And almost a decade ago, they were expensive and not used as creatively. These days, the tilt-shift lens is completely missing from various camera systems. And I think that the tilt-shift should make a return, but in a totally different way. You can view this article and much more with minimal banner ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. And for $24.99/year, you can have a banner-ad-free experience. Tilt-shift lenses were all about getting perspectives 100% totally what you want them to be. All of that can be done digitally via post-production these days. But a lot of photographers would rather not have to do it in post-production. After all, what's the fun of photography if you're spending all day behind a computer screen? Manufacturers like to talk about how some of their lenses don't have distortion. And for the most part, a lot of distortion has been eliminated. But it's not perfect still. A tilt-shift lens, medium format, or large format lens can still do things much better and get it right the first time around. “The miniature effect is in essence, using the lens to drastically change the plane of focus by a tilt and/or shift to throw out the area of focus only keeping a small area IN focus.” How a Tilt Shift Lens Works Even so, I don't think that that this is why the tilt-shift lens should come back. Instead, I think that the current landscape of lenses is just seriously lacking in variety. We'd know, we've reviewed more than any other photo publication. Manufacturers also generally work to engineer all the character out of their lenses. These clinical experiments have removed the soul from optics. To that end, we get the perfect metaphorical tacos that still need a lime to be drizzled on them. And this means that a manufacturer doesn't necessarily need to create a tilt-shift lens, but a tilt-shift adapter could possibly work. Even then though, the adapters don't do as good of a job as a dedicated lens. Years ago, we reviewed the Rokinon 24mm tilt-shift lens. And it touched on a very big and important point. Here's a section from that review: “Now a lens like this is built to CORRECT distortion caused by less than ideal perspectives (we can't all shoot from a cherry-picker 20-50 feet in the air all the time). So thankfully with the shift adjustments available on this lens it is quite simple to correct the converging lines of taller buildings or even normal rooms from a higher or lower angle than eye-level.” I'll totally admit that this can be an annoying problem to deal with. But a tilt-shift lens would make sure that I don't have to face it at all. And when I'm done with it for perspective correction, I'll go play with it to create miniatures. If you're sitting here saying, “Chris, you can just do it in post-production,” then you're missing the point. I don't want to do it in post-production. A lot of us don't. We're still in a pandemic that isn't over and people spend way more time in front of screens. We don't need to anymore. We can spend time working with our cameras and getting the photos to be perfect in-camera. Photography is a skill, and we should make it so again. Yes, AI and technology has made the basics easier. But it's up to us now to raise the higher end of skills up since the lower end has also risen up.

What Is A Tilt Shift Lens? Let Me Explain In Less Than 10 Minutes. Hi and welcome to Episode 66 of the Photography Explained podcast.I’m your host Rick, and in each episode I will explain one photographic thing to you in plain English in less than 10 minutes (ish) without the irrelevant details. What I tell you is based on my lifetime of photographic experience. And not Google. Here is my answerA tilt shift lens is a lens which can be tilted and shifted so the lens plane is not parallel to the camera sensor and the imaging circle is moved from the centre. This allows photos to be taken with different perspectives with more uniform image quality across the image. Tilt shift lenses are used in architectural photography, straightening verticals rendered crooked or converging by conventional lenses, and are also used where creative depth of field is required.Listen for more, or check out the transcript and even the blog post - so many ways to find out more! What’s next?Glad you asked! In this special episode we are trying to do something very 'un-Snyderish' - we are trying to shorten our podcast run time! During this episode, Jake and Chris list their ten thoughts on Zack Snyder's Justice League. At four hours running time it took a couple of evenings, but was it worth it? From the macro to meta will it this movie be a marvel? Or did we waste our time and really we should have done this on "Infinity War" and "Endgame." Find out on today's episode of the Tilt Shift.

For the final episode of our first season of The Tilt Shift, we looked at Tarantino's latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This was a kaleidoscope of a movie that immersed us into 1969 Hollywood. It was like what Vincent Vega of Pulp Fiction would have called, "A wax museum with a pulse." We discuss how unlike many of his other films, Tarantino's 9th, doesn't have as innovative of a story and story structure, but unlike many of his other films, he's created arguably the most human and complex characters of his career. It's a film that sparks a lot of questions: Did Cliff Booth kill his wife? How are we supposed to feel about him as a hero? Is Sharon Tate's character developed enough? These questions and more are explored in this season finale. Even Shrek and Kobe Bryant end up in the conversation somehow. This is most likely a two-parter, as we have a lot more to discuss about it, such as how it ranks in Tarantino's career, why it may have been deserving of the best picture of the year, and who or what was the MVP of the picture. If you liked, part 1, stay tuned for part 2.

How does a Federal Marshal and a bank robber find love and romance with each other as they both also try to catch each other? This is the subject of today's solo Tilt Shift episode. Chris goes through Out of Sight, an early Steven Soderbergh movie that stars George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. Jake and Charly are absent on this one, so we hope you enjoy Chris' insightful but slightly overly monotone delivery.
Ten years ago Eddie honed his craft with a residency at Geelong’s most infamous Pub, The Nash where his 5-hour sets took punters on a journey. Since then he’s been throwing parties such as Mutant Dance, Tilt Shift and Sonic Therapy while holding down guest spots/residencies at Revolver Upstairs, Lucky Coq, Captain, Geelong Hotel, Xe54, New Guernica, Boney, The Gaso, Lounge and much more. His sound is inspired by Ron Hardy infused with Optimo and his deejay sets are just as unpredictable. @dj-example ==================================================== Upcoming Novel events: We are self-isolating. In 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson made a 3 hour and 9 minute family drama entitled, Magnolia, which included a star studded cast, headed by Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, and John C. Reilly. Interestingly, it was more or less snubbed during award season. A movie that can be described as relentless in its rising tension, it is probably known best for the scene where it rains frogs over the desperate and hopeless characters whose lives interconnect through what appears to be more than coincidence. Have a listen as The Tilt Shift tries to break down this elusive, and under- appreciated gem of a film.

Inspired by their affinity for Americana, absurdity and the Midwest, these brothers have been able to spin mythic tales of tragedy, comedy and anything in between, to create an anthology of film spanning four decades. In their 1998 classic, we are pulled into a world of bowling, bags full of money (or not), and a case of mistaken identity, all of which are turned into the building blocks of one of the most bizarre, original stories about everything and nothing all at the same time. So grab an oat soda, and join the Tilt Shift as they chat about The Dude, Walter, and The Big Lebowksi.
For our first episode of The Tilt Shift, Chris, Jake and Charly discuss Quentin Tarantino's classic, Pulp Fiction. This might seem like a rule breaker for our podcast which claims to discuss films that are often overlooked. But what if this movie is, to some extent overlooked and underrated, or dare we say, overrated? It's assumed a classic by many, quoted by a generation, and seen as a cool film about bad people. And though it seems to always make its way onto every film buff's top 10 list, no one really takes the time to discuss why it's such a groundbreaking, meaningful movie. As Jules Winnfield says, "I've never gave much thought about what it meant..." On this episode of the Tilt Shift we're going to do exactly that.
Today Colin from Scotland has a Tilt/Shift question and Darren disagrees with what Chris said on the last episode and Chris agrees that Darren is correct in disagreeing but in the end Chris think we all agree.. it’s a little complicated. For the “On Talking Creativity” episode, Marco invited Jeffery Saddoris to the show. Jeffery was born in California and became a technical theater major in college. After working on scenery and costume design at different theaters in the US, he changed directions and became an instructor for HTML and Photoshop - which eventually led him to become an Art Director at Universal Studios. Since High-School, he has always explored photography and painting as a hobby and merged both passions together in mixed media art. After many years of practicing and teaching photography, he wanted to share and discuss the creative process in photography and art with the world. He started the website Faded & Blurred, which was a leading source of photographic inspiration from 2009-2015, and still is a great resource today. Jeffery joined NY photographer Bill Wadman in 2012 to co-host the popular weekly photography podcast “OTP - On Taking Pictures” which ran for 6 years and 326 episodes. Now Jeffery runs his own series of podcasts on creativity like “Process Driven”, Iterations”, or “In Between”. He’s also the author of a great photography guide “Photography by the Letter” (link: https://jefferysaddoris.com/photography-by-the-letter/). Jeffery’s current short bio states: Serial Conversationalist, Podcaster, Author, Photographer, Painter. And on this episode, Marco and Jeffery discuss the creative struggles and sources of inspiration that artists and non-artists constantly encounter in their lives. It’s visually a joy to look at and you can tell that he has spent a long time on composing the drawings and charts to explain the subject matter in a very organized and visual way. The book is structured in a way that you can look up a subject by the letter - for example, “A” like Angle of View or Aspect Ratio and read and look at the explanation and the accompanying drawings. And the subject matter ranges from old analog terms to modern digital photography terms. For example, you’ll find out how a bellow is used and how it relates to our modern macro extension tubes and Tilt-Shift lenses. And this makes this book a fun resource to explore for a photography beginner as well as a seasoned pro. This book will simply make you a more educated photographer. And it also inspires you to take action with photo exercises. The eBook is $20 and the hard copy is $30. Or you can currently pick up both in a digital bundle special for $40. https://jefferysaddoris.com/photography-by-the-letter/ Jeffery picks: “Avedon’s France: Old World, New Look” Hardback, 792 pages, Published by: Abrams & Chronicle Books Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2VAcHqh Publishers Website: https://www.abramsandchronicle.co.uk/book/9781419726002-avedons-france-old-world-new-look/ Richard Avedon was fascinated with France.

Canon has recently announced the addition of three new tilt-shift lenses to its lineup, a relatively big deal for a type of lens often considered merely a tool for architecture photography. The truth is that tilt-shift lenses are used in many photographic applications, from landscape to portraiture, and their creative possibilities are limitless. Also, with this release, Canon has expanded the format to include a TS-E 135mm lens, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with perspective-control optics. Using this news as the keystone, we have built an episode of the B&H Photography Podcast around tilt-shift and perspective-control lenses. We discuss the history and general principles of these types of lenses, as well as their common (and not so common) applications. We explain the difference between tilt and shift and address the fact that perspective corrections can now be made in post-production and, despite that, the value that in-camera control offers. We wrap up with an inventory of the many tilt-shift lenses available from B&H, including those from Nikon, Canon, Schneider and Rokinon, as well as those available in the used market and those for medium format cameras. Join us for this informative discussion and let us know about your most valued tilt-shift lens and what you photograph with it. Guest: Todd Vorenkamp

Fundamental Friday - Focal Length and Choosing a Lens Zoom Lenses, Prime Lenses, Wide, Telephoto, Macro, Tilt Shift, Fish Eye, etc. With so many lens options what do we choose for our cameras and photography? Well I don't know if I have a sure fire answer to that question but I wanted to discuss focal length and a few things to think about when it comes to lens choice. In this episode I shed some light on focal lengths, zoom and prime lenses, and understanding the aperture's sweet spot. The video with the sample pictures on location are a great example on this topic and why this is definitely something to consider when choosing a lens for your photography.
