This is The Digital Story Podcast #989, March 4, 2025. Today's theme is, "A Day in the City with the OM-3." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Like for many of you, the OM System OM-3 was delivered to my doorstep this last Friday. What perfect timing! I had an all-day adventure in San Francisco lined up with the family for Saturday. I charged up the battery, mounted the 14-42mm EZ zoom, and hit the road. What happened next surprised this seasoned Micro Four Thirds photographer. Find out why on this week's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.

The next Supermoon is just around the corner (October 17th), and it's expected to be the biggest and brightest supermoon of 2024. If you want to capture it in all its glory, you need the right gear. OM SYSTEM's Micro Four Thirds cameras and M.Zuiko Digital lenses are perfect for the job. Why? The 2x crop factor doubles your equivalent focal length—so, a 300mm lens becomes a 600mm! That means more zoom without the heavy, bulky gear. So, if you're gearing up for the Supermoon, OM SYSTEM has you covered. Check out their full line of cameras and lenses at explore.omsystem.com/petapixel, or visit your local authorized OM SYSTEM retailer. When you've been in the camera industry for nearly 40 years and operated The Camera Store since the late 1990s, you see a lot. Peter Jeuene has done just that and also is the man who gave Chris and Jordan the opportunity to get on camera and become the experts you know today. Peter shares his thoughts on the state of the industry, how film's resurgence has affected his business, how he manages to compete with U.S. retailers and camera brands on the sales front, and even shares some stories from when Chris and Jordan used to work in his store. Touting Panasonic's new LUMIX S9 camera, a representative was quoted saying that Micro Four Thirds sensors are more difficult to understand than full-frame sensors, especially for people with “low camera literacy.” That piqued our interest, because many photographers assume that a full-frame sensor is just inherently better. But is that true? And is it really that confusing? We also touch on LUTs, which Panasonic is pushing on the S9 by dedicating a button to choosing different look-up tables for creative color rendering in camera. When a listener asked Chris, Jordan, and Jaron to share how their careers (all the highs and lows) have gone over the years, the team decided it was worthy of a main story segment to itself. Speaking of creative journeys, OM SYSTEM has announced their last call for entries in their contest and community-based project Tell Your Story which is aimed at promoting and showcasing the capabilities of the OM SYSTEM OM-5 camera. Renowned for its class-leading performance and weather-sealed design capable of handling any environment, the OM-5 offers remarkable computational features such as Live ND and Starry Sky AF. Building upon the success of last year's initiative, Tell Your Story II strives to identify and empower emerging talents to advocate for OM SYSTEM products within their social communities. Through March 25th, 2024, photography enthusiasts of every skill level are invited to participate in Tell Your Story II. The project will be showcased on Instagram, on the @omsystem.generation channel. Candidates selected for Tell Your Story II will receive support from OM SYSTEM, including the OM-5 camera, lenses, and mentorship  by esteemed OM SYSTEM Ambassadors, including Brooke Bartleson and Peter Baumgarten, to bring their projects to life. Details about the program and how to participate can be found at explore.omsystem.com/petapixel. Did you know that Chris Niccolls was very disinterested in photography for most of his young life? Did you know that Jordan Drake used the money from a canceled trip to Europe to buy a video camera, forever changing the course of his career? Did you know Jaron got his start working at a photographic lighting company? Humble beginnings all, and the three share what sparked them to continue in the photography and video space, how teaching is important to them, and how that despite the lows (of which there are many), the highs still get them excited about every day. We would once again like to thank our podcast sponsor, OM SYSTEM! Pre-orders are live right now, with shipments beginning in late February. Every half-decade or so, medium format experiences some kind of "resurgence," and thanks mainly to Fujifilm's excellent GFX 100 II, many photographers might be interested in jumping over to the large sensor cameras. With Hasselblad's update to the 907x system last week, the team discusses where each medium format system resides, who they're for, what are they are good at (and what do manufacturers want them to do), and what the future of medium format might be. Is it doing just fine on its current trajectory? Would it be a fantastic platform to bring back a TLR-style camera body? Is it the one place a DSLR still makes sense? Chris, Jordan, and Jaron debate. And this is particularly beneficial to Micro Four Thirds photographers who have plenty of compact, super-sharp optics available. That means we can cover just about any outside event with gear that fits in a handbag. I share one such example on this week's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.

If full frame camera prices come down (to an "affordable" level) you might ask "Do we even NEED Micro Four Thirds any more?" In this episode I'll cover the reasons I think it's good to keep BOTH systems (if you have full frame already, the cost of adding Micro Four Thirds isn't a barrier, and if you have Micro Four Thirds, full frame is getting close!) P.S. I mentioned current pricing of the Sony A7rii, but said A7ii…but I DO NOT RECOMMEND the A7ii for video purposes (but the A7rii might be a possibility, as long as you're good with shooting in the cropped Super 35 mode, because the 4K is good in that mode, but not in full frame mode). Also, after some testing, I no longer recommend DSLRs (such as the Canon 6d which I mentioned) because they don't work well LIVE with HDMI switchers, such as the ATEM Mini, etc.

“Do I really replace lenses or just buy more of them? That's the major question,” says Kevin Rickert, B&H Photo's Senior Sales Trainer for cameras and lighting, in the heat of discussion for our Notable Lens Releases of 2022 and 2023 episode. Listen in as we assess the latest crop of optics from Canon, FUJIFILM, Hasselblad, Nikon, OM SYSTEM, Sigma, Sony, and Tamron. The full list makes for a lot of glass, so we've narrowed things down to a focused selection of primes and zooms spanning medium format, full frame, cropped sensor, and Micro Four Thirds formats. As in our annual Cameras of the Year show from December, we mix up the tech talk with practical anecdotes to help match lenses and customers based on user experience. Which Camera System Has the Best Animal Detection Autofocus?

The Phoblographer

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 26, 2022 6:15

If you're curious about animal detection autofocus in your camera, then you've come to the right place. We've been curious about it too. What's more, each camera system takes its own approach to how to do it. And it can be very confusing to some folks. At other times, it can be really frustrating. So we're looking at animal detection on various camera systems. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. What is Animal Detection Animal detection differs depending on the camera system. A lot of them incorporate animal and bird detection together. Sony is the major full-frame camera manufacturer that doesn't do this. But basically, it tells the autofocus to look at the scene and prioritize autofocusing on an animal instead of a human, bike, car, etc. Lucky for you, we've reviewed tons of cameras that do this. For the record, we've tested all of the cameras that we're talking about in this post. Canon With Canon cameras, there are a few ways to autofocus. The system can look at a scene and recognize certain things. If you set it to animal vs. human, it will detect all sorts of animals. We've used the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, Canon EOS R7, and the Canon EOS R3 in animal detection. Each time, it has found both birds and mammals with no issues in animal detection mode. Practically speaking, this means that you're less likely to miss shots. You can be walking around in the forest and have your camera set to animal mode with ease. You can be photographing chipmunks one moment and hawks another moment. Otherwise, you'd need to physically move the autofocus point over the subject to get focus. That's often much harder when it comes to focusing on a bird through trees. But a system that recognized the warbler in the trees can get it faster. Best Cameras for Animal Detection and Bird Detection: Canon EOS R5 Canon EOS R6 Canon EOS R3 Canon EOS R7 Nikon Update September 2022: The Nikon Z9 is the most innovative camera when it comes to animal detection for Nikon. It bundles birds and animals together. We've used the Z9 in our review, and found it to be much better than the Z7 II and Z6 II, which only have detection for basically pets. We've also known that the Z9 has improved with autofocus updates. Best Cameras for Animal Detection and Bird Detection: Nikon Z9 Sony Sony has a complicated but effective system. If you take the Sony a1 or even an older camera like the Sony a7r III into the forest to photograph birds and animals, you'll need to set the camera accordingly. The Sony a1, in bird-detection mode, won't do so well getting your dog in focus when you turn your camera to it. As a result, you'll have to go quickly into the menu system and then switch it to animal focus priority. It also works well with the Sony a7 IV. We've done this, and it's been pretty annoying at times. Best Cameras for Animal Detection and Bird Detection: Sony A1 Sony a7 IV Fujifilm Update September 2022: Fujifilm has finally entered the wildlife world! They separate animal from bird detection and have two cameras that can do it. There's the XH2, which is slower than its older sibling, the XH2s. The latter is designed for speed, and with the right lenses, it can perform very well. Best Cameras for Animal Detection and Bird Detection: Fujifilm XH2s Panasonic With a camera like the Panasonic S5, you'll be able to use animal-autofocus detection to photograph birds. There are also Micro Four Thirds cameras like the G9 and GH5 II that can do it. It does a pretty good job overall, but effectively tracking the subjects isn't as good as it is with Sony and Canon. Even when you adjust the focusing profiles, it just doesn't have the same hit rate. Best Cameras for Animal Detection and Bird Detection: Panasonic S5 Panasonic GH5 II OM System The Olympus OMD EM1x has autofocus for animals and birds. But it's really not that great. According to our review: “For wildlife, I walked away very disappointed at the fa...

It's all about the new gear this episode, as we delve into Sigma's brand-new full-frame fp L body, as well as running a critical eye over the 2021's coveted TIPA awards. To find out about the 61mp fp L we went straight to the horse's mouth via an exclusive interview with Tim Berry, Media and Marketing Manager at Sigma Imaging UK. So, to find out about Sigma's high hopes for the new model and what the PN team see as its main selling points, dive in now. Photography News is an active member of TIPA, the Technical Image Press Association, so the mag plays an important role in deciding the winners of its yearly awards. Will, Roger and Kingsley talk through some of the winners, as well as explaining what the Association stands for and how the winning gear is chosen. Elsewhere, there's plenty of technique talk as the team has been out and about on all sorts of photo projects – with varying degrees of success and personal trauma, of course. Kingsley hires a super telephoto lens to tackle elusive spring wildlife, Will has a smashing time at a steam railway open day and Roger uses his camera skills to turn gloomy Cambridgeshire into sunny Spain for an afternoon's product shoot. Also in this episode you'll find advice from the experts at mpb.com about buying a ‘proper' video camera, tips on using the classical Golden Ratio for better composition, and an overview of the masses of lens options available to Micro Four Thirds users. This is The Digital Story Podcast #786, April 13, 2021. Today's theme is "Should I Stay with Micro Four Thirds?" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue It's been over a year since the release of the OM-D E-M1 Mark III. And it doesn't seem like we're going to see anything significant until the end of 2021 from OM Digital Solutions. Panasonic has been quiet on the MFT front as well. Meanwhile, Fujifilm and others have been quite active. Is it time for me to read the writing on the wall, or to stay the course? I discuss on today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 786 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In Should I Stay with Micro Four Thirds? Here's why I've preferred Micro Four Thirds to this point. Fantastic Lens Catalog - If I want a super telephoto and ultra compact prime lens, I can find just the right one in the MFT mount. Image Stabilization Is Not a Premium Option Every Olympus MFT camera I have include fantastic IS. Still the Most Compact Excellent Image Quality Reasonable Pricing But, I'm enjoying shooting with Fujifilm cameras as well. I like their better resolution, film simulations, and styling. For a look at what the future may look like for OM Digital Solutions, you may want to check out this Interview: Aki Murata of OMDS (Olympus) - 'we're more flexible now'. Lots of good insights there. In terms of Panasonic -- Panasonic launched the LUMIX G100 on June 24, 2020, a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera designed and developed for creating high-quality, versatile content. Bottom Line For my "system" camera, I'm going to wait and see what Olympus does over the next year. I have great lenses for the MFT mount, and I truly enjoy shooting with their cameras. If I don't see a solid successor to the E-M1 Mark III by 2022, then we'll revisit this topic then. In the meantime, I can work just fine with the gear that I have. A Beautiful Couple - Fujifilm X-S10 with 27mm Lens I've been testing recent releases from Fujifilm searching for that perfect combination of functionality and nimbleosity. You've probably read about my disappointment with the X-E4. Nice camera, but missing too many features for my taste. I did like, however, the XF 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens that you can bundle with it. When I paired the XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR lens ($399) with the Fujifilm X-S10 ($999), I found a wonderful pairing for on-the-go photography. There are a few key reasons why I preferred the X-S10 to the X-E4. 5-axis image stabilization built into the camera. Built-in popup flash that can also serve as an off-camera flash controller. Excellent handgrip that doesn't really add bulk to the camera. It's about the same depth as the 27mm pancake lens when mounted on the body. Battery charger included in the box. You get all of this in a still very compact package. All of this comes at a price, however. Combining the separately purchased XF 27mm lens with the X-S10 body tallies to $1,398 compared to the $1,049 for the X-E4 bundle. The problem is that Fujifilm isn't provided a bundle for the X-S10 and 27mm, so you have to buy them separately at regular price. When the same lens is purchased with the X-E4, you save $200 off the price of the lens. I would love it if Fujifilm would offer us the same deal with the X-S10. That would be bring the price down to $1,198. Fujifilm: I would buy that bundle in a heartbeat. Bottom line here is that if you're debating between the X-E4 and X-S10, I recommend the latter. The X-S10 doesn't realistically take more room in your jacket pocket, but packs many more features. It's a great camera. I have well over 30 years of experience in photography so I do know what I am talking about! In this episode - What Is A Micro Four Thirds Camera? Here is my answerA micro four thirds (MFT) camera is a mirrorless camera which has a smaller sensor size than full frame and cropped sensor cameras. The micro four thirds system was created by Olympus and Panasonic, and shares a common lens mount available to third party manufacturers. MFT cameras are generally smaller and lighter than other mirrorless and DLSR cameras, and are an excellent alternative providing high quality imagery.Listen for more, or check out the transcript and even the blog post - so many ways to find out more! What’s next?Glad you asked! It’s that time of year again at the B&H Photography Podcast. Now firmly established as a tradition, with the end of the year in sight and gifting season in full swing, we take an episode to talk about the most interesting—dare I say, best—cameras of the year. Our guests include podcast regular Levi Tenebaum and B&H SuperStore camera expert Georgina Diaz. This year, we start with an overview of mirrorless cameras announced in 2019, including the new full-frames from Panasonic, Sony, Leica and Sigma. We also mention the new APS-C and Micro Four Thirds format cameras such as the FUJIFILM X-Pro 3, the Sony Alpha a6600, the Nikon Z50, and the Olympus OM-D E-M1X Mirrorless Digital Camera. Perhaps most interesting are the mirrorless medium format high-resolution cameras that were introduced, including the FUJIFILM GFX 100 and Hasselblad X1D II 50C. Jumping ahead to DSLR cameras, we see that Nikon and Canon updated their flagship models, Canon offering the EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR and Nikon, the D6 DSLR Camera. Canon also announced its compact mirrorless full frame, the Canon EOS RP. High-end point-and-shoots from Sony and Canon were released, as were three new waterproof tough cameras from Ricoh, FUJIFILM, and Olympus. After a break, we take on the subject of lenses and accessories and highlight a few lenses that caught our attention, such as the FUJIFILM XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR, the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens, and several others. We wrap up the episode with a discussion of lights, tripods, drones, and other accessories. Our guests bring their expertise to this conversation as we compare new cameras to their predecessors, discuss specs, and get insight from the SuperStore floor regarding what have been the hot items from 2019. Join us for this timely and educational episode. Guests: Levi Tenenbaum and Georgina Diaz

Due to popular demand, we share our thought on claims that the M4/3 system is dead. Marco invited Scott Bourne back on the show to step on their virtual soapbox and discuss some of the claims about the demise of the M4/3 system now that so many new Full-Frame mirrorless camera systems have entered the market. And in the second half of the show, they cover some mirrorless news, a mirrorless listener question, and pick the mirrorless photographer and photo of the month.   This show is sponsored by: COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC    Skylum Luminar3 - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3  The claim “Micro Four-Thirds is dead, ranks pretty high on the clickbait charts these days, but there are plenty of facts and arguments that contradict these claims. For example, some people may see the introduction of the Full-Frame S1 camera system by Panasonic LUMIX as proof, that Panasonic will abandon their M4/3 camera system. While looking at Fuji and Sony who run two complete camera systems with different sensor sizes successfully next to each other, such a move can simply be seen as a move to grow market share catering to more photographers. Besides that, different sensor sizes do have certain advantages over the other and some of these are covered in this episode. Some cameras and lenses matching this conversation are: Olympus OM-D E-M1X B&H: https://bhpho.to/2CEmWhH    Panasonic LUMIX G9 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2Jy9B0u  Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2KxmzJy    Panasonic GH5 B&H: https://bhpho.to/2JQLhr1  Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/31t1AP4    Olympus ED 300mm f4 IS PRO lens B&H: https://bhpho.to/2JQ4kBB  Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2yOsSTB    Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm f2.8-4 ASPH O.I.S. The upgraded second version of this camera has improved in especially in the speed and usability department. A huge rear LCD and higher resolution EVF next to quicker start-up time and less blackout time between shots. Marco was also really impressed by the new USB-C option to tether the camera directly to your iPad Pro and run Hasselblad’s Phocus 2 app as an instant preview and editing extension to your workflow. And another nice fact about the camera is that the price has been reduced considerably compared to the release price of the previous version. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2ZLIOlG    Hasselblad CFV II Scott and Marco have fond memories of working with their analog V500 Hasselblad systems. And now Hasselblad revives the system with the CFV II 50C digital back. It attaches to old analog V500 cameras and turns them into a digital medium format camera system. But with the addition of the new tiny 907X body, the CFV II tunes into a very compact medium format camera for the new Hasselblad XCD lens system. And conveniently, that setup allows for autofocus, too.   Hasselblad 907X Special Edition B&H: https://bhpho.to/2ZPYrZ4  Olympus Tough TG-6 Camera SSummertimeis rugged camera time and Olympus added some improved features to this latest iteration of the TG-system that Marco and Scott discuss. Many photographers love the Micro Four-thirds mount for its small size and big feature set... But increasingly, full-frame mirrorless cameras are a similar size and produce undeniably superior results. With Canon and Nikon joining Sony in the full-frame mirrorless market, and Fuji creating value-oriented APS-C cameras, I think it’s inevitable that those lens mounts will lure most new photographers. Additionally, many existing Micro Four-Thirds photographers will be lured to competing camera systems because of the cleaner images, better low-light capabilities, and a wider selection of fast lenses. If nothing else, people think full-frame sensors always produce better images, even if that’s not always true.   Sponsor: http://squarespace.com/tony, coupon code ‘tony’   Watch a video of this podcast at http://sdp.io/dead

On this episode #11 of the “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast for February 2018, Marco and Scott discuss these new products and mirrorless topics:   This show is sponsored by: COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. and PhotoShelter - Where photographers get work done!   Scott tells us what he has been up to and at which photography events he can be seen in the next couple of weeks.   We are giving away one COSYSPEED CAMSLINGER Streetomatic + camera bag on this show. Listen to find out who has won it.   Fuji announced their new top model camera the X-H1. This camera is a hybrid between a photo and video camera and Marco has received a lot of questions regarding this camera and he’ll give his honest opinion regarding some of the features and changes that Fuji has implemented in this camera. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2FnzbjP   Olympus has announced the entry-level mirrorless PEN E-PL9 camera. Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2ogogRB   Panasonic has announced the compact GX9 camera with a 20MP m4/3 sensor and 90° tilting EVF. This could be a very nice street photography camera. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2CAPlTJ   Panasonic has also announced the ZS200/TZ200 which features a 20MP 1” sensor, 5-Axis Image-Stabilization, and a 24-360mm equivalent field of view super zoom lens. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2EHTXxk   Lensbaby announced the Burnside 35mm lens with variable vignetting. This lens introduces the Petzval lens features to a relatively wide 35mm f2.8 lens. It is supposed to be bright and sharp in the center with a nice color rendition - while a slider can introduce a variable amount of swirling bokeh and vignetting to the outer area of the frame. The Burnside 35mm is rendered for full-frame DSLR cameras, but it also comes in mirrorless mounts for Micro Four Thirds, Sony E, Fujifilm X and Samsung NX mount. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2CBdF7U   DJI has announced yet another very desirable drone. The new DJI Mavic Air fits right in between the entry-level Spark and the top compact model Mavic Pro. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2FjFFjy   Sony has developed a backlit CMOS sensor with global shutter, and Scott and Marco discuss if and how this could change the future of photography.   Scott will be at the Skylum booth at WPPI. Check out the Skylum LUMINAR 2018 software. Currently, I have the opportunity to test the Olympus om-d e-m1 mark ii for four weeks and I have to say this is a very nice camera. I like it very much. Now I would be very much interested to compare the Olympus with the Fuji X-T2 and I thought this would be a nice topic for your show as you know both cameras very well. I'm not so much interested in specs comparison but rather in daily practice and image quality etc. I would be very grateful if you could cover this topic in one of your next show. Thanks in advance and best regards Helmut (from Munich) We have a PPN Photo Podcast Network group at Flickr (click link) that is open to our listeners and photos taken with all mirrorless camera brands.
