David Sparks: MacSparky David Sparks speaks and writes about how to use technology to be more productive. David is a past speaker at Macworld / iWorld and a regular faculty member for the American Bar Association’s TechShow. David has published numerous books and videos on how to use technology including the MacSparky Field Guide series that includes videos and books on managing email, going paperless, and how to make a winning presentation. David is also co-host of the popular Mac Power Users, Automators, and Focused podcasts. When not speaking and writing about technology, he’s a business attorney in Orange County, California. David recently released his Paperless Field Guide*. In this conversation, David and I review the key steps to managing a paperless lifestyle including how to capture, process, edit, and share documents. We share useful hacks to find data in documents, track changes, annotate PDFs, and much more. Key Points The goal of the paperless lifestyle is to provide sanity so you’re not spending time and energy managing paperwork. Scanner Pro is David’s recommended app for most people who want to capture documents easily with optical character recognition (OCR). Getting your documents into PDF format will allow them to be accessible for the future and also protect you from trouble with future software versions. Decide on a personal syntax for how you name files. Including a noun, verb, and date can be useful to surface documents later. Use “track changes” on Microsoft Word or “suggesting” on Google Docs for collaboration, review, and editing. If you use a tablet and do lots of reading or document review, consider utilizing some of the newest features for annotation and markup. We still eagerly await the Apple Watch, the companion app for which was recently revealed (http://9to5mac.com/2015/01/13/apple-watch-iphone-companion-app-revealed-with-new-watch-features-monograms/). But if you went to CES you could have gotten a fake Apple Watch for $30 (http://mashable.com/2015/01/08/fake-apple-watch-ces/). That reminds us of a great story from Macworld | iWorld 2013 (http://www.macworld.com/article/2027044/starfish-smartwatch-saga-illustrates-entrepreneurial-stumbling-blocks.html). Dan is getting an Amazon Echo (http://www.amazon.com/oc/echo/). For science. But he really wants to talk about his surfeit of remotes and how he hopes the Neeo will fix all his problems including that rash (http://www.neeo.com). The entire rest of the episode is a T-Mobile ad read conducted by Lex (http://www.t-mobile.com).
On this week’s all-star episode, we welcome columnist Dan Frakes, a former Macworld editor, who discusses the decision to discontinue the print edition of the oldest Mac magazine, and to put the Macworld / iWorld conference on "hiatus." He'll also discuss current Apple issues, such as iOS 8 and Yosemite. You'll also hear from security expert Alain Ghiai, CEO of DigitalSafe, who focuses on smartphone safety and whether Americans should be concerned over the government's claimed right to "break down the doors" to our digital privacy. He'll also discuss the company's encrypted cloud storage system, which is based in Switzerland. Our final segment features commentator Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. His bill of fare includes the possible reasons that iPad sales are flagging, the disconnected coverage of the goings on at Apple, the prospects for the Apple Watch and how it sucked the air out of the smartwatch market for this holiday season. He'll also comment briefly on Microsoft Windows 10, which is currently available as a Technical Preview.
Chris Breen speaks with Paul Kent, master of Macworld/iWorld to talk about the show going on hiatus.
In a previous show, Host Jenee Darden took you on a geeky journey through the MacWorld/iWorld Conference in San Francisco. Now she’s exploring wearable devices and devices that help manage your health at the conference. Jenee speaks with Jeff Gamet, managing editor of The Mac Observer magazine. He says some of these devices helped him lose weight. Listen as they discuss wearable technology, smart scales and gadgets that even can send info about your vital signs to your doctor.
Moving forward with new releases of OS X sometimes means leaving things behind. With the introduction of Lion, Rosetta went away and we lost the ability to run old PowerPC apps (some of which never got updated to Intel). With the introduction of Leopard, we lost the ability to run Classic (OS 9) apps. Of course, pretty much everything is available to us in modern versions of OS X. But, what if you have data that needs to be read from some old app in an unsupported operating system or you need to run some utility that hasn't been written for a modern Intel-based Mac? You might feel stuck. Fortunately, there are some solutions. We'll talk about and demonstrate how to run PPC apps, Classic OS 9 apps as well as old Mac apps from the old days (like on a Mac Plus) all on a current Mavericks-based Mac. While we're on the subject, we'll also talk about running operating systems on the Mac making it the most universal computer available. We'll also review some more products seen at Macworld | iWorld in March. And, of course, we'll go over some other current events in the OS X world as well as review some cool Mac & iOS apps and leave some time for Q&A.
For those of you who have finished your taxes and won't be up all night, come on over and join us. We'll review the events from Macworld | iWorld and we'll talk about new products from the show. This is one of our highlights of the year as our week in San Francisco gives us an idea of what 2014 will bring us for third party products in the OS X and iOS worlds. And, of course, we'll go over some other current events in the OS X world as well as review some cool Mac & iOS apps and leave some time for Q&A. Whenever I'm directing or producing in the field, my iPad is always by my side. In addition organizing my shot lists, storyboards, blocking diagrams and budgets, my iPad also serves as a handy wireless video monitor! I'll use it to review dailies (footage taken at a previous time), view rough cuts sent over from my editor, and even use it as a live field monitor when shooting with the Teradek Cube, an amazing transmitter that can beams a video camera's signal straight to your iDevice. In short, the iPad is an ideal way to view video while on location. That is, until the sun comes out, at which point, it transforms from a gorgeous video display into a horribly reflective, mostly-useless makeup mirror. Thankfully, Macworld/iWorld has brought us another treasure in the form of the Hoodini -- a collapsable iPad shade from Hoodivision. The shade uses a magnetic band and nano-suction tape (anything with 'nano' in its name is sexier - scientific fact) to quickly connect (and stay connected) to your iPad, giving you a completely shaded view of your screen. When you're done, it just pops right off, and folds back up. Not only does it help avoid reflections, it also keeps your iPad cooler! The Hoodini is available in a variety of colors, with separate models designed for full size iPads and Minis. Good stuff!
Schneider Optics, makers of the iPro Lens, was back at Macworld / iWorld this year showing off some new lenses as well as a new lens attachment for the iPad! They've even branched out with a new lens mounting case for Samsung smartphones.
Live from Macworld|iWorld 2014, Rene talks to Brad Ellis, Jessie Char, and Louie Mantia of Pacific Helm, Clarko of FitBit, and Sebastiaan de With of DoubleTwist about iOS 7 six months later, and interfaces on wearables and everywhereables.

We're caught between two large conferences this week. CES just ended and Macworld | iWorld comes at the end of the month. At our next meeting, we'll have a little recap of some of the activities that might have interested Mac and iOS users at CES in Las Vegas. The iLounge pavilion was fairly large and lots of iOS-related stuff was on display. In addition, many other companies announced products with a Mac or iOS tie-in and we'll go over some of the highlights. And, of course, we'll go over some current events in the OS X world as well as review some cool Mac & iOS apps and leave some time for Q&A. If you're thinking about attending Macworld | iWorld in San Francisco (Jan 30 through Feb 2), you'll want to register for the free expo pass. In the past, the Users Conference has been a few hundred dollars. This year, it's called the iFan pass and it's only $50 (before Jan 30 and $100 at the door)! This gives you access to the expo but also access to all the TechTalks (this is a fantastic deal!). You can register for either one of these at https://2013.macworldiworld.com/portal/reg/catalog.ww
