One of the tools we don't talk about that much on the podcast but have all used is Carbon Copy Cloner. Before CCC, we wrote scripts to clone drives, figured out rsync, build manual imaging workflows with firewire drives, and in general just had this barrier of entry to do what should have been simple tasks that we really didn't need. After CCC, there was a simple GUI with some fairly complicated logic underneath. Then it went far beyond the basic cloning technology to do much more and do it faster. But Jerry proactively prepared the backup overnight and then restored all 70 GB before arriving to the client site. -After struggling to unzip the data using multiple GUI tools, Jerry was able to use the command line to extract the data -All this reminds the hosts how many end users don’t think to backup their Mac -DollyDrive anyone? -With the uncertainties about data integrity on Catalina, listener Chris Hart writes in to provide his workflow for migrating to Apple’s latest OS. In the scope of today’s episode, a One Trick Pony is an application that only does one thing, but it does that one thing very well. Here are sone One Trick Ponies I regularly use that could help you with your design business. 1) 1Password (Mac + Windows) 1Password is an application for managing passwords on Mac, Windows, IOS and Android. 1Password allows you to store all your strong hard to remember passwords in a secure location. All you have to do is remember one single password and let this password manager do the rest. 2) Squoosh (Web-based) Squoosh.app is a useful website to optimize and shrink the file size of your images without compromising quality. Drag an image onto the browser window, adjust the settings if needed, and download the smaller image file for use. 3) BackBlaze (Mac + Windows) BackBlaze is a set-it-and-forget-it backup solution for your computer. Install it and let it do its job unhindered and rest assured that your computer is continuously backed up. Should you ever need to restore your computer, you can easily do so from the online backup, or order a physical hard drive containing all your data shipped to you. 4) Carbon Copy Cloner (Mac only) Carbon Copy Cloner creates bootable copies of any hard drive. Create manual backups or schedule automated backups of any drive. Smart Updates saves time by only backing up files that have been added or modified since your last backup. Mike Bombich is the founder and president of Bombich Software, the developer of Carbon Copy Cloner. That’s a backup app for the Mac that has saved the day for many users. He’s a former Apple employee. In this timely post-WWDC show, Mike joins me to explain the structure of APFS drives and the new read-only System files in macOS Catalina. He explained new features of volumes in macOS 10.15, especially how the System is isolated from the Data volume (which contains /Users). He also explained the new firmlinks that tie these two volumes together, making them appear as one. Finally, Mike explained how Carbon Copy Cloner external drives can no longer be HFS+ in Catalina but must become APFS.

I wrote it initially in Python and then I wrote it in Elixir and it became so complex. Now we are moving everything back to Ruby and it’s been a fantastic decision. 36:30 – Chuck: You are talking about the sustainability of open source but there are benefits throughout the company right? There are tons of tangible benefits of doing it, especially when it’s your Friday schedule. You can level-up on things that could help you. I know a lot of companies cannot afford it if they are trying to hustle. 37:42 – Guest: It’s totally not charity through Thoughtbot. It’s a huge help for hiring new people. I know they are okay with letting me work on Lucky b/c it’s bringing on new developers and a good marketing tool, and finally recruiting! 39:07 – Chuck: Yeah, I have been talking about developer freedom and that’s what I am addressing through the DevRev show! It’s my new podcast show. We talk with Chris on Elixir Mix. It lends that credibility if they need to save our bacon. 40:02 – Panel: What’s your goal with Lucky? 40:11 – Guest: I would love to get it to the point where Thoughtbot could start a project and default to Lucky! Now that platform is kind of dried up. In terms of getting people excited it needs that killer app and they can see that it’s fast and killer! I think it takes a lot of time and finding time to do it so that’s tricky. It’s changing a lot when there is so much change. Getting Lucky to a 1.0 state so people can do videos and make apps. The hard part thing is that Lucky has to be 1.0 when Crystal is 1.0. The Lucky community is great b/c it’s encouraging and to respond in a very kind way. When you are starting something that’s new can be scary. LifeHacks for Grading: Should you use your built in district grading system or use one of the gradebooks below? EasyGradePro: This gradebook is great if you want lightning fast grade input. CON: You cannot post grades to the internet. Engrade: This gradebook is platform agnostic and all online. You can do a lot with posting student work to the site with TINY URLs. CON: Can be blocked by districts / privacy policies, etc. Thinkwave: I used to use this program when I first started, but I haven’t used it in a while. Quia: A great website for creating student tests and quizzes to give online. LifeHacks for Student Behavior: Danny’s Example of Positive Behavior Support: We really need to try and make good positive behavior supports for our students. Sometimes they really need explicit teaching on what socially appropriate behavior is. Below is an example you can use to give students points when they act the way you want them to act. Hazel: This app is crazy good. Mac Power Users have a particularly good workflow on how to use it here. Lifehacks for Student Motivation Socrative: A learning response system for students. You can get a response from students instantly from their smartphones or computers. Students can vote on best responses and create quizzes on it for things like an exit ticket. Socrative breaks down your student data in an easy-to-read excel file. Alphasmarts: Another learning response system if your students cannot use smartphones in class. Talking about hardware problems with my car, my own mental wiring and my laptop, leading up to attending Podcaster's across Borders in Kingston Ontario. Every attendee who writes a blog or posts a podcast/vidcast will put this tag in their RSS fee.In the process of troubleshooting problems with my laptop, using tools such as Techtool Pro, Carbon Copy Cloner and and Apple Disk Utility, the drive and the motherboard failed and an emergency trip to the Apple Store Genius Bar resulted in it being pronounced DOA.All that I can do at this point is offer some cautionary advice on how to prepare, and deal with the inevitable computer meltdown.Finally I go over some of the critical features I'm looking for in my next laptop.Corrections: I made an error in describing the pixel dimension of the MacBook Pro 15" laptop. It is 1440x900, which is identical to the highest resolution on my PowerBook 1.67 Ghz 17" laptop. Also I was wrong about the price difference. There is only a $200 price difference, not $400.Finally, the factory warranty is one year and you can purchase AppleCare, an extended warranty for a maximum of 3 years (not 4 years). A real bargain at $350. It covers any defective parts and service to replace them.There are two graphics cards in both the 15" and 17' which have 2.8Ghz processors, and they function the same. There are other, slower processor 15" MacBook Pros and their hardware configurations are very different. Here's the primary differences between the two laptops as far as I can determine right now. 15" 17" • Cost Difference $200 less • Two video cards Yes Yes • Drive 500 Gig 500 Gig • Card Slots SD ExpressCard/34 • Display Good Larger, HiRez • Battery 7 hours 8 hoursThe 17" is a good deal for the extra $200, no question about that.
