#577 Shane Wilkie is a community member who has made impressive strides in sports, event, and commercial photography since his last appearance. The discussion centers around building confidence as a photographer, the evolution of photographic style, and how personal projects can drive both skill and personal growth. He discusses his experiences building a portfolio, including how trading photography for accommodations with Airbnb hosts opened doors to paid commercial work. Shane also delves into tackling nerves while photographing people, the differences between event and action sports photography, and how personal projects—particularly those connected to his personal history—help him process and express complex emotions.KEY TOPICS COVEREDBuilding Confidence and Portfolio Through Experience and Trade - Shane explains his strategy for gaining experience—offering his photography services to Airbnb hosts and local businesses in exchange for accommodations or meals. This approach allowed him to experiment with styles, build a diverse portfolio, and transition into paid commercial work, while ensuring creative freedom to try new techniques.Expressing Emotion and Storytelling in Photography - The conversation explores how to move beyond technically good images to ones that evoke emotion and tell stories. Shane shares insights on making images relatable, using techniques like an intervalometer for candid shots, and always aiming to capture genuine moments that let viewers envision themselves in the scene.Personal Projects and Growth as a Photographer - Shane discusses the impact of tackling personal photo projects, especially those rooted in personal history and emotion. He details his process in planning, sequencing, and critiquing a long-term project about growing up, adoption, and finding outlets like skateboarding and photography to process emotions. This segment highlights the therapeutic and artistic significance of personal work outside client assignments.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSPortfolio-Building Trade: Exchanging photography services for goods or experiences (e.g., a night's stay at an Airbnb) instead of cash. This strategy empowers photographers to build their portfolio with less pressure, experiment, and network with future paying clients.Intervalometer: A device or camera feature that enables timed, repeated exposures. In Shane's workflow, using an intervalometer lets him capture authentic, non-posed moments during self-portraits or lifestyle shoots, contributing to a natural, polished final image.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow can trading photography services be a valuable step for beginners looking to grow both skill and portfolio? What techniques or approaches can help photographers build confidence—especially when photographing strangers or in crowded settings?RESOURCES:Visit Shane Wilkie's Website - https://www.shanewilkie.com/Follow Shane Wilkie on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/shanewilkie/Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! Graphite is a new image editor with an interesting architecture - it's a classic UI-driven app, an image-manipulation language, and a library of programmable graphics primitives that any Rust coder could use, extend or add to. The result is something that you can use like Photoshop or Inkscape, or make use of in batch pipelines, a bit like ImageMagick.Joining me to discuss it are Keavon Chambers & Dennis Kobert, who are hammering away on building a project that's potentially as demanding as Photoshop, but with a more ambitious architecture. How can they hope to compete? We've been covering the rise of AI image editing very closely here on Decoder and at The Verge for several years now — the ability to create photorealistic images with nothing more than a chatbot prompt could completely reset our cultural relationship to photography. But one argument keeps cropping up in response. You've heard it a million times, and it's when people say “it's just like Photoshop,” with “Photoshop” standing in for the concept of image editing generally. So today, we're trying to understand exactly what it means, and why our new world of AI image tools is different — and yes, in some cases the same. Verge reporter Jess Weatherbed recently dove into this for us, and I asked her to join me in going through the debate and the arguments one by one to help figure it out. We all want to look our best, right? But can we look "too good"? When we share photos of ourselves online, we're all tempted to touch them up - remove the double chin, the fly away hairs etc. But when we take it to the extreme people may be left wondering who we are when we meet them face to face. The same could be said about our products. Are you guilty of this?

Denoising diffusion models have emerged as a powerful tool for various image generation and editing tasks, facilitating the synthesis of visual content in an unconditional or input-conditional manner. The core idea behind them is learning to reverse the process of gradually adding noise to images, allowing them to generate high-quality samples from a complex distribution. In this survey, we provide an exhaustive overview of existing methods using diffusion models for image editing, covering both theoretical and practical aspects in the field. We delve into a thorough analysis and categorization of these works from multiple perspectives, including learning strategies, user-input conditions, and the array of specific editing tasks that can be accomplished. In addition, we pay special attention to image inpainting and outpainting, and explore both earlier traditional context-driven and current multimodal conditional methods, offering a comprehensive analysis of their methodologies. To further evaluate the performance of text-guided image editing algorithms, we propose a systematic benchmark, EditEval, featuring an innovative metric, LMM Score. Finally, we address current limitations and envision some potential directions for future research. Social media behemoth Meta is developing two AI-powered generative models, Emu Video and Emu Edit, for enhanced content editing and generation on Facebook and Instagram. Emu Video uses text and image inputs to generate video clips, while Emu Edit focuses on precise image manipulation. Despite being in the research phase, the models show potential for creators, artists, and animators. However, regulators are keeping a close watch on Meta's deployment of these AI-based tools. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/support

We propose a method for editing images from human instructions: given an input image and a written instruction that tells the model what to do, our model follows these instructions to edit the image. To obtain training data for this problem, we combine the knowledge of two large pretrained models—a language model (GPT-3) and a text-to-image model (Stable Diffusion)—to generate a large dataset of image editing examples. Our conditional diffusion model, InstructPix2Pix, is trained on our generated data, and generalizes to real images and user-written instructions at inference time. Since it performs edits in the forward pass and does not require per-example fine-tuning or inversion, our model edits images quickly, in a matter of seconds. We show compelling editing results for a diverse collection of input images and written instructions. 2022: Tim Brooks, Aleksander Holynski, Alexei A. Efros https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.09800v2.pdf
Recently, I sat down with Suzanne Samaka (founder of #HonestyAboutEditing campaign), Danny Bowman (mental health advocate) and Daniel Magson (chair of Anorexia and Bulimia Care) to discuss body imaging, how images are edited online and in the printed press, and eating disorders.
Episode 50: This (remixed) Tidbit Tuesday is a little more philosophical in nature as I answer two of our listener questions around photo manipulation - whether that is done in the field or in the digital darkroom. Is there a difference between photo editing and photo manipulation? And if so, where's the line? Who makes that call? Should you disclose when you have manipulated an image? What are the implications if you do or don't? Learn how this debate has transpired over the relatively short life of photography as an artform and how it can inform our decisions about how we approach our creative practices with our photography. In this episode, I discuss:The practice of photo manipulation throughout the history of photographyThe debate about photo editing versus photo manipulation when it comes to landscape and nature photographyThree points to consider when deciding how much editing is acceptable in your own photographyAnd more!LINKS MENTIONED:Brief History of Photography Blog from Not Quite in FocusProfessor Jeff Curto's lecture, Photo History - Class 12 - The Manipulative ImpulseGroup f/64's Manifesto (1932) National Geographic, How We Spot Altered PicturesNANPA's Truth in Captioning StatementKenneth Brower article in The Atlantic, Photography in the Age of FalsificationUniversity of Washington Magazine, The Call of the Wild Beckons Photographer Art WolfeGuy Tal's book, More Than a RockFull Show Notes***HAVE A QUESTION?Record a Question for Tidbit TuesdayLOVE THE OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY PODCAST?Ways you can support the show:Buy Me a CoffeeLeave a Rating and ReviewSign up for the Outdoor Photography School NewsletterShare the show with others!CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE TO FOCUS?Download my FREE Hyperfocal Distance Made Easy EbookABOUT BRENDA PETRELLA (host)Learn more about meVisit my online portfolioConnect with me on Instagram
Has the ability to Photoshop images become too easy? At what point during manipulating a photo does it stop being a photo and become a digital work? What are the ethical ramifications of AI image and video editing software that makes it possible to create deep fakes or entirely new "people" who don't actually exist? I talk with Photoshop tutor and digital artist, Andrew Kavanagh to explore these questions and more. There's so much out there these days about the tiny home movement. Living a more minimalist lifestyle and all that. I have to say, I've been a full time Airstreamer for over a decade now, and I think the original tiny homes might just be RV's. Mobile home, small footprint, and definitely requiring a conscious effort to not clutter your little home. Today we talk Tiny Homes, a new Tiny Home Hotel in Cave Creek AZ, and my puzzling over how mobile tiny houses really are. •Check out my class on Drone Photography and Image Editing, more than 50% off for visitors to this channel!
