As we enter October, we thought it'd be a great idea to dedicate the month to the horrorcore genre of hip-hop all month. We're kicking it off with the sinister, down right depraved album Season Of Da Siccness from Brotha Lynch Hung, released in 1995. Over the years this album has developed a cult following for its gruesome tales, like a slasher movie on wax. https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa/profilecard/?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=8qIa0qv360Q&_r=1 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=LQQJ4d

Paul Meldrum, the owner of Meldrum Performance Coaching, is also a recipient of the Clinical Excellence Award & was a former Personal Trainer of the Year. He started as a personal trainer in a commercial gym, however he soon left due to burnout. He then did freelance personal training and then moved to creating his own small sports studio. He had a lot of inquiries so he decided to expand, doing semi-private training, and ended up operating a commercial gym with 400 PT members. Although his gym was doing well, he started question how he can prevent his business from losing money when his clients left or moved away. And that's when he decided to sell online. A year before Covid hit, he decided to sell his gym. Because he loves doing in-person training, he continued to do subcontracting with gym but he also spent a lot of his time developing online programs. At that time, he business was 60% online & 40% in person. Only 1 day after the lockdowns due to Covid happened, he was already operating 100% online, with all his systems in place. Today, his business is 95% only & only 5% in person.   In this episode, he talks to us about why going online is better than training in person and how to make your client realize the same, the SICC protocol which is a coaching framework that helps the client make the right decisions for themselves, his secret to client retention (he has only lost 1 client in all of 2022!), and more!

Welcome to Episode 140 of Building My Legacy. This podcast is a bit different as we learn about a vocational school in southern Texas that’s training its students to become welders — a career much in demand today. Our guests are Eliud Medina, the director of the Southern Industrial Careers Center (SICC), and Lily Maldonado, the school’s public relations officer and an admissions representative. The story of SICC is truly inspiring, particularly for those of you thinking about the next chapter of your life. Eliud and his all-female staff have discovered a unique way to make a contribution to their community and to build their legacy. Lily shares with us what it’s like to be part of a traditionally male-dominated industry. We also learn about SICC students — recent high school graduates from an economically challenged background, older students looking to make a career change and even former prison inmates. The goal is to help these students move into a career where they can make a good living for themselves and their families. As Eliud and Lily tell us, the challenges can be great, but they experience tremendous joy when their students get good-paying jobs that promise a secure future. So if you want to know:– The benefits of giving people a chance — or a second chance– The value a female team can bring to a male-dominated industry– The importance of motivation and providing a look at the big picture– Why leaders need to give people an environment where they can discover their talents and step up About Eliud Medina and Lily MaldonadoTrained as a welder, Eliud Medina held various positions in management until he lost his job in the 2014 recession. He used that experience to found Southern Industrial Careers Center (SICC), a vocational school dedicated to teaching industrial trades in welding and fabrication. Lily Maldonado joined SICC’s all-female staff with no knowledge of welding, but with a desire to help people, especially those in low socioeconomic communities. SICC has succeeded by helping its students at every stage — from obtaining financial assistance for their education to partnering with employers who can receive funding for on-the-job training. As Eliud points out, there is a tremendous demand for welders — not only for pipeline work and other heavy construction. In fact, 60 percent of everyday household products require some sort of welding. 209: Going to Outsource School with Serial Entrepreneur, Nathan Hirsch

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Nathan Hirsch. Nathan is the go-to entrepreneur and expert in remote hiring and e-commerce. Nathan started FreeUp.com in 2015 with $5000 and scaled it to over $12 million per year, selling it in 2019. He then went on to co-found the Outsource School, a company that educates and provide resources to entrepreneurs to train and help them effectively build and scale their business through outsourcing. The platform combines all of the knowledge and tried and tested systems that Nathan and his co-founders have used to scale businesses to 8-figured and beyond entirely through outsourcing. Hearing that, I bet you can guess why I asked him to be on today. In the world of Covid and business in general, it literally pays to know how to outsource well for your business – and Nathan is the guy to teach us. www.OutsourceSchool.com www.OutsourceSchool.com/Misfit for a special offer Nathan’s parents were both teachers. He grew up thinking he would go to school, get a job, etc. But his parents made him get jobs every summer and he realized he hated having a boss. When he went to college, he saw it as a way to learn, but also as “4 years to create a business” that he could own and run after college. He started our by buying and selling textbooks, essentially competing with his school. Before he knew it, he had lines out the door and got a cease and desist letter from the college! He then pivoted and started selling on Amazon. He then branched out selling other items and ironically found a niche in baby products. Before he knew it, he had a multi-million dollar business selling baby products from his college dorm room and needed to start hiring because he was overwhelmed. He tried college kids and then outsourced VA’s, and through managing them learned how to put processes in place that he no teaches today to outsource. He found a lot of holes in the VA process and it took forever to find good ones, so he had an idea to create a company that did that for people, pre-vetting VA’s and taking all the guess work or out of it. That company was Freeup.com. In 4 years, it went from a $5000 investment to $12 mil in sales with everything outsourced and done with 35 VA’s. They sold it in 2019. At this point, people were approaching Nathan for his experience and knowledge, so he created Outsource School to give people what they need. What are the do’s and don’ts of growing a good e-commerce brand? Nathan didn’t create his own products – he found others and sold them and dropshipped Partnering is important to success in building an e-commerce company. Nowadays, it’s important not to be on Amazon. The fundamentals haven’t changed. Focus on customer service Focus on how you can diversify and not have all your eggs in one basket. Focus on partnering to fill your gaps Why do you think outsourcing is the best way to scale a business? The world has changed. You don’t need to be located any specific place, you don’t need office space, etc. The barriers and costs to entry are low because of the free tools out there and internet. And in today’s world, just about anything you need in a business is available at your fingertips with skilled VA’s. Accounting, graphic design, website design and management, customer service, etc. can all be outsourced. You can scale and grow with part time VA’s up to full time as you go. It makes it much easier to build a business. Take us through how your build a business using outsourcing…what are the steps? 2 parts: The idea and MVP and outsourcing. Nathan’s first 2 hires are always a part-time bookkeeper and someone to get him out of his inbox and manage his email, appts., etc. T ake the MVP to market, get feedback and see if it has promise. You can then increase hours of the VA’s and add others in for other needs. “A MVP (minimum viable product) is important in any venture. Just because we sold a couple companies, doesn’t mean every idea is going to be good. So, you have to test the waters with low risk using an MVP.” At the 14 min mark, Nathan goes into detail about how they built Outsource School. To make your business better and grow, you need to get yourself out of the day to day so you can focus on the most important parts of growing and getting the business out there and making sure it has a market, creating brand awareness, networking, etc. Do that correctly and you’ll be in a good place after year one. What are the “got to” tasks or roles that should always be outsourced? Everything! There are 3 types of VA’s Followers: Non-US, $5-10 per hour and there to follower your processes and systems. Doers: Graphic designers, video editors, etc. Experts: High level. Think consultative and bring their own best practices, processes, etc. It’s important to know which type you need for a role. You will need all 3, but you need to know where to put them and hire them in at. At the 19:45 mark, Nathan talks about the SOP process (Standard Operating Procedure) and why it is so important to focus on. SOPs need to be broken down into 3 parts. Part 1: Why. Why is this task important? Why is it needed? What does success for it look like? Part 2: Step by Step. Put together the exact steps needed to do the job. Part 3: Do NOT Do List or Important Reminder List. Put all the important stuff at the bottom to make sure it is clear to them. Once you have the SOP, don’t focus on 1:1 training from day one. Give them the SOP and a video for the first week, pay them, and let them go. At the end of that week, test them. If they get 80% of it, then move forward with 1:1. This is a way to sift through VA’s to find the best one for the role. What’s the most important thing entrepreneurs need to get right from the beginning and why? If someone is newer to VA’s. It all starts with the interviewing and onboarding. Nathan uses the CARE method: Communication: They must be able to communicate to your standards. How fast do they respond? Do they communicate in a way you understand and do they understand you? Attitude: Is their attitude in line for what you want in the role. Red Flags: Be on the lookout for any red flags. Experience: Do they have the skill set and have proven it. Once you find someone, make sure you are on the same page for compensation. The onboarding method is called the SICC method in a 30 min meeting: Schedule: Are they good with the schedule that you need? Are there conflicts? Issues: Computer? Internet? Power? Communication: Will they communicate in the way you need to them to? Culture: Set the expectation of them having to be a culture fit and what that means. At the end, give them the opportunity to ask questions and back out. Anything else we should know on outsourcing? When starting – just focus on getting 5 hours per week back. Don’t try to outsource everything at once. What has surprised you most on your entrepreneur journey? Nathan gets rejected almost every day. He keeps putting himself out there and getting rejected all the time. You learn to focus on the successes and let the failures go and not affect you. Your ability to handle rejection well will help you grow a larger business. Nathan also shares a story of almost losing a whole business because they almost lost all the data for the company. Who do you go to for mentorship and why do you choose them? Look for people that have skills you are lacking that you cannot hire for. Create a relationship with them before asking for mentorship. You can even hire them as a coach and teach you their processes. Look for people with your same values. For Nathan, that is honoring your work, treating people with respect, and owning up when you make mistakes. Best advice for an entrepreneur starting out today? Get your MVP out there. You don’t need hardly any money to start a business right now. Figure out if there is actually a market for your product and experiment to make sure it is worth your investment.   Best Quote: “A MVP (minimum viable product) is important in any venture. Just because we sold a couple companies, doesn’t mean every idea is going to be good. So, you have to test the waters with low risk using an MVP."   Nathan's Misfit 3: Reward those who have helped you achieve success. Honor your word and be super clear on what you can and cannot do. Figure out what your ideal day looks like to be your most productive and make sure you business is structured around that.   Show Sponsors: Assistagram:  www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Assistagram 5 Minute Journal: www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Journal

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 011 Rollin' With Spina Bifida Joining me today is Whitney Stohr, a master advocate for her son and others in the community. There's a lot to learn from her family and a lot of good information in our conversation.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Tell me about you son Malachi  He is almost 21 months old, adorable, the most social little guy you'll ever meet and he has Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida means that in-utero, very early in a pregnancy the spine of the baby doesn't form like it should. As a result, when the child is born, there's an open area on their spine. During the development later into the pregnancy, the nerves that go down the spine are open to the fluid inside of the placenta and to the air when they're born, causing damage to the nerves. It can cause numerous related disabilities, usually impairs mobility and often leads to Hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. Hydrocephalus is caused by the Arnold-Chiari malformation, which is where the spine is open to the air and it tugs the spinal column down, brings the brain down to the upper part of the neck and blocks the fluid that naturally occurs on the brain. This causes a buildup of fluid on the brain which requires surgery to place a device in the brain to help drain it.  When did you find out that Malachi had Spina Bifida? We got our diagnosis just after my second trimester ultrasound where everything looked great and my regular OB didn't see anything. I had the quad screening and that showed an open neuro tube defect which is what Spina Bifida is. They brought me back in and sent me to a specialty clinic to do a high resolution ultrasound. I went into research mode to find out everything I possibly could about the condition. I feel like I didn't miss a beat in trying to determine what the next steps were.  Tell me about Malachi being born. Malachi was born in January 2018 at 35 weeks. I was living in Yakima, about 2-3 hours away from Seattle. We were flown over by medical flight in the middle of the night and taken to the University of Washington Medical Center and rushed into the operating room for a c-section. They couldn't get the epidural to work, so they had to put me under. It was traumatic because I wasn't sure if I'd wake up and even have a baby. They put me to sleep, I woke up in my hospital room and my husband told me Malachi was fine, in the NICU and being prepared for a transfer. They wheeled him up in his incubator, I got to meet him for the first time, say hello and say goodbye and send him on his way. Malachi was taken to Seattle Children's Hospital and had surgery to close up his spine. For the first surgery, they brought in a couple teams to pull the muscle and skin and literally zip up his spine. If the spine isn't closed up soon enough, there's a risk of infection so the goal was to get him into surgery as soon as possible. He was born in the middle of the night at 12:38am and had the surgery mid-afternoon the same day. Malachi spent the first eight months in the hospital. He had five other surgeries in this time. He had spinal surgery on day one and brain surgery on day two to correct the Hydrocephalus. He was born with congenital heart defects, so he also had open heart surgery at two months old.  You're living in Yakima, so where are you staying and what are you doing for eight months? My husband had to go back to work, so he was living in Yakima and commuting, working Monday through Friday and then coming to Seattle on the weekends. When Malachi was in the NICU and I wasn't allowed to stay with him, we were at the Ronald McDonald House, which was a godsend. Once he was moved down to a room, I lived in the hospital with him. It was a long journey to bring Malachi home. After his heart surgery, he started having a lot of trouble breathing, so before he could go home we had a tracheotomy and he became ventilator dependent. Part of our going home plan involved weeks and weeks of training on how to keep him alive. We were terrified to bring him home. In August 2018, we brought Malachi home to Yakima for the first time and it really kicked in then just how challenging it would be to be outside the hospital, trying to live a somewhat normal life and how many obstacles there were. Since then, it's been a learning opportunity every day.  How do you get out of the house with Malachi and all his stuff and get to an appointment? Not very well. It's a mess. I follow all these other medical moms on Instagram and a lot of their kids have trachs and feeding tubes and I feel like they're my heroes and they're so much better at it than me. I feel like a hot mess all the time. Malachi has to have a giant stroller, which I call the magic school bus. It's a sit and stand stroller made for two kids, I put his ventilator on the bottom where a toddler would stand and strap it on with bungee cords. We put his oxygen tank on the bottom and we travel with a giant red emergency backpack that has all of his spare equipment in it. We also have all the regular baby stuff like diapers and food. We attach his feeding tube and cords to the stroller with a clamp to keep from rolling them over.  How is he thriving so far with his new therapist? Is he in a co-op with Birth to Three or is he still too young? No co-ops or group therapies yet. We are hoping to, but the challenge right now is that it's cold and flu season and we're nervous to have him around other people. We'll be going into isolation in November until April or May. Hopefully by spring we can get him in a playgroup through the therapy center with other kids with disabilities and we're looking forward to that.  Can you tell me a little bit about what you've learned about being an advocate for Malachi medically and in general? I'm such a loud mouth and always have been. I've never been afraid to tell people to stick it when they need to hear it. That probably suits me well in this case. It has been different because I don't have a medical background and there's been a huge learning curve and I'm still learning every day, but as medical parents we can be an advocate in two ways. We can be an advocate for our kid, which is a given. We can also use our experience and the knowledge we gain to be an advocate for the community and for all kids and all people with disabilities or medical diagnosis. The disabled community is considered the largest minority group in the US, so whether we have disabilities or not, if we're going to be advocates for anything we have to include advocacy for disabilities. Opening my mind to that world has shown me how much privilege I have to not have to be aware of the issues that affect the disability community. I didn't have to be worried about good sidewalks or accessible parking spaces or accessible restrooms because it didn't affect me. A big part of this advocacy has been educating myself on these vast issues that affect people and kids with disabilities. It's been a practice in humility for me because I've had to accept that I was naive to these issues, but as an advocate it was a kick in the pants. It's important for medical parents to use their voice and to get involved however they can. There are ways that every single one of us can get involved and because we have this unique experience, it's so important that we all do get involved.  Can you tell me about the new organization you are a member of now? It's called Parent Institute for Engagement (PIE) ran through Washington State, the same program that runs the early intervention services statewide. They wanted to get more parents engaged and they wanted to give them the skills they need to advocate. This is not just advocacy for your child, but advocacy for the community, focused on a broader level. It's a year long leadership program, with seven people in my cohort and we meet once a month alongside the state interagency coordinating committee, which are government appointed people and representatives from different agencies. They come together once a month to talk about improvements, problems or how to make recommendations to state agencies on areas that need to be addressed. We have our meetings and learn specific skills. Last month, we learned how to tell our story for an advocacy purpose. Then we attend the meeting with the SICC where we get to meet all of the representatives and hear about ongoing problems. PIE is a group of really dedicated parents who want to be active advocates in their community and it's so fantastic. Anyone can apply, so I encourage other parents who want to be advocates and who want to learn those skills to apply.  What are your advocacy goals over the next year? I want to get more involved. Before Malachi, I didn't know much about disability issues or even issues happening in our own state and there are a lot of issues. I hope that through the PIE program and through other ways I've gotten involved in the community because of Malachi, that I make connections and get involved in the programs and campaigns that these groups are leading. Hopefully I can add my voice to the masses and we can make some change.  How hasn't having Malachi changed you? How do you feel it's changed your entire family bringing someone like Malachi into the world? Having a kid like this, being in and out of the hospital, seeing how much these kids go through just so they can wake up every day with a gigantic smile on their face is really profound how it affects you. I think it affects everyone you share your story with, which is why we do share our story. It's made me more focused, more of a serious and driven person. It's made me incredibly passionate about causes that are close to my heart. For the rest of my family as well, we've become very involved in issues related to Malachi's conditions. We've become a lot more outspoken about issues affecting kids like Malachi or kids with any other condition. Overall, your sense of empathy grows.  CONNECT WITH WHITNEY Whitney Stohr on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whitney.stohrhendrickson Malichi’s Journey on Instagram: @rollin.w.spinabifida Instagram: #spinabifida #redefiningspinabifida #hydrocephalus LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED Children's Village Yakima Washington State Early Intervention Parent Institute for Engagement (PIE) Spina Bifida Association TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify Apple Podcasts Stitcher Overcast CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website Twitter Instagram
