Welcome to this episode of the Full Stop podcast, where we're joined by our guests John and Ben to explore the joys and complexities of being a childless aunt, uncle, or godparent. Together, we reflect on how these roles offer meaningful ways to nurture, support, and build a legacy when one is childless not by choice. Listen for advice on boundaries, freedom, and the unique impact of chosen relationships across generations. Please note that we do cover what it's like not to be an aunt, uncle or godparent, as one of our presenters does not have this caring role. This might be a challenging listen for some of our audience. (Members of our online community can carry on the discussion in our safe space.) Download the transcript

On today's Keepin' it Real, Cam reports on a writer's conference he attended last weekend where a good part of the conversation was about using AI. All the writers, Cam reports, choose to not use it, preferring to remain "pure." ----- I attended a writers' conference last Saturday. Writers are a curious breed, convinced their unique perspective on describing something as mundane as a sunset is groundbreaking and essential. I love them. But they're weird. This year, though, a frequent topic was artificial intelligence – how do writers use it, if at all. Speaker after speaker claimed they don't use the stuff, choosing instead to remain “pure.” Huh, I thought. I wonder if mathematicians once dismissed calculators because they weren't pure. Or cooks refused kitchen blenders because electrified blending wasn't pure. Or the ancient Chinese dismissed matches because fire made from flint and steel was somehow more pure. "AI just doesn't have a soul," the authors seemed to be saying "It can't experience love, loss, or regret." True enough, but then again, neither does my toaster, and it still reliably performs its job every morning without any existential angst. Plus, it doesn't complain when I burn the toast. Truth be told, I wanted to agree with the speakers wholeheartedly. Part of me wanted to stand triumphantly on my chair, fist raised high, shouting, "Yes! AI can't possibly write the way we can! Its unpure." But as I sat listening, I couldn't help remembering countless times when I've stared helplessly at a blinking cursor on an empty screen, desperately begging for inspiration to appear. More often than not, what I ended up writing was about was mindless junk that I needed to fill a page and make a deadline. Maybe a dash of AI could have given my writer's block exactly the jump-start it needed. Yet could an AI authentically capture the awkward silence after a joke falls embarrassingly flat—something I've personally experienced far too often—or perfectly describe the unique blend of ego and insecurity that simmered quietly throughout the conference room? Could it mimic the quiet desperation of writers jockeying for the attention and the validation of their peers? The honest truth is, I don't know. And frankly, I'm not sure these writers at the conference really knew either. Perhaps they're right, and artificial intelligence will always lack that elusive "human touch." But who can say for sure? Maybe someday, an AI will pen a poem so profoundly moving that we'll all toss our beloved notebooks aside and question every choice we've ever made. STOP. FULL STOP. Everything you've just heard was written this morning by ChatGPT using the following prompt: Write a 450-word commentary based on my Keepin' it Real commentaries for Alabama Public Radio, written in my voice. In it, discuss a writer's conference I attended last week and how many writers felt that AI could never replace the sound of the true creative's voice. Make it humorous and poke a bit of fun at the writers who said this. And folks, I can promise you this is the first time I've used AI in any of my 300+ commentaries. And I pledge to you going forward, I intend to Keep It Real.

Roll film! In Episode 23, DDSWTNP continue our White Noise residency by heading to the movies (or the TV screen) and examining Noah Baumbach's 2022 film adaptation of the novel. We discuss the drive over the years to adapt the supposedly “unadaptable” DeLillo for the screen, the 2020s context of this film, and our varied reactions to successive viewings of it over the two-plus years since its release. Other topics include the central performances (especially Adam Driver as an unexpectedly good Jack Gladney and Don Cheadle as a refashioned Murray Siskind); Baumbach's successes and failures at re-ordering DeLillo's dialogue and visually distilling certain themes; and his shaping of the narrative as a “meta-cinematic” journey through his personal film history and a mixture of genres. Reviews by Tom LeClair, Marco Roth, and Jesse Kavadlo figure in our analysis, and we close by considering whether we do in fact “need a new body” in the film's concluding supermarket song and dance number, which in our view captures some of the novel's themes and distorts others. We'd love to hear on Instagram or email what you think of the film and our reactions, too! We also take a little time to correct a historical error in our Episode 19 on Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake. Texts and sources for this episode: White Noise (dir. Noah Baumbach, 2022) (Netflix). There is a popular saying in America that offers succinct insight into our culture. I think it was coined by Gen-X, but I'm not sure. What I do know is that this cliché is unique, because the only way to understand it is by hearing the speaker's tone. The expression is a reply to the American greeting, “How's it going?”, and, at face value, the response, “I'm living the dream,” sounds nice. However, as all native speakers know, this can imply that the person is elated, or absolutely miserable!Which, full circle, is the best example I can think of to illustrate the impossibly inconsistent reality of “life in America.” For some, “life's a dream,” but for others, it's an endless, devastating slog of 40+hour work weeks with little to no time off.I won't bore you with statistics, but suffice it to say it's common knowledge now that Americans, for decades, have been taking less vacations and paid-time off than other first-world countries, even the ones bosses love to stereotype as “worse than us.”Why does this matter? It matters because Americans now use, “I'm too tired from work” as an excuse for everything, even giving up on ourselves and others, and it's harming society. People are now “too tired” to be healthy, spend time with family, keep in touch with friends, and care about their community, and the result? Obesity, crime, suicide, and “low information” rates are skyrocketing “from sea to shining sea.”I started writing about the conspicuous meanings for “I'm living the dream” because it's a “binary term” that exposes our division, but I also think it's important to study because it uses sarcasm, a relatively new, but now stable aspect of American culture. Sarcasm is my favorite rhetorical device—FULL STOP. I'm deeply sarcastic, and it gets me in trouble all the time. For example, I often offend others with “wry jokes” about my son's abduction, and I recently made a sarcastic joke about an item in a stranger's grocery cart that 99% of us would get, but she didn't, and I hurt her feelings. However, the older I get, the more I see the disturbing reason for why and how people like me are so attracted to sarcasm. It's because, sometimes, it's a device we can use to deceive others when we're emotionally broken and can't handle our devastation.Like, I obviously don't find anything funny about what my ex-wife has done with our son and how it's affected him, me, my family, and even my friends, all of whom abruptly lost access to a boy we love and had been investing our hearts into.Ergo, it's probably not funny when someone is asked, “How are you?” and their impulse is to employ a sarcastic comment about The American Dream to mask the fact that they're emotionally broken from their participation in our “work culture.” Which makes sense, since some jobs are degrading and others are meaningless, and in both cases, they embitter the person to the point where they feel like they aren't valuable or valued, both of which create resentment. This is how “classism” works. But there's a third reason many Americans have a sarcastic opinion of our “work culture,” and this is why many of us feel like social order is breaking down. The other reason our working-class has resentment against the system/culture is because many Americans have jobs that are not degrading and do have meaning, but they're forced to do it so much that it bleeds into their “regular life” and this is why we now use the scariest term I've ever heard in my life: “work-life balance.” If you really think about this term, it's psychotic. It implies that we have a life, and then a “non-life” called work. That's deranged, and it ‘promotes' rage and apathy. And before you call me “pink,” I know that “work” and capitalism aren't the problem. People are resentful in socialist and communist countries too. What people resent is feeling like they're not helping the team, or that the team is taking them for granted. Here's my advice (because you shouldn't complain unless you offer a solution):Few, if any of us, can stop corporations from “doing what corporations do,” but all of us can give compassion to people with degrading or meaningless jobs, and we can also show compassion to wealthy people who were bamboozled into trading free time for money. These people might have more than others think they need, but they also suffer as they age and realize that instead of “living,” they worked all the time. The point I'm trying to make, and I think it's consistent, is that with deep, philosophical inquiry, it's possible to understand people who are not like us and whom we will never be like, and with this process comes great peace. No wise person ever said “love everyone,” let alone “like everyone.” What they say, over and over again, is “accept everything,” which includes “bad” systems and “bad” people.I love the environment and so do you! After all, the environment gives us everything we love and need, from the oxygen we breathe, to the junk food we eat, standing over the trashcan at 11pm (Just me?). That's why I think you should listen to my interview with David Auge, a prominent figure in the field of environmental management. David is on a mission to transform the humanities' approach to looking at sustainability issues. He is a Certified Sustainable Development Professional, Energy Manager, Hazardous Material Manager, a registered Professional Engineer. He's also really, really, like super-duper smart. Apparently… I feel obliged to use the word “apparently,” because I struggle to believe that this report is true. Apparently, younger generations believe that punctuation is hostile. Specifically, they find full-stops intimidating.
We are thrilled to be joined by Karin Enfield De Vries from Pure Transformations and Scared Woman Retreats for an honest exploration of boundaries, grief, and finding joy during times of celebration. Holidays like Christmas are often painted as joyful and magical, but for many, they bring up emotional complexities—especially for those navigating childlessness and changing family dynamics. We join Karin to unpack what it means to honour yur needs, set healthy boundaries, and create new traditions that reflect who you are today. We'll talk about the courage to say no, the art of self-care during the holidays, and the power of embracing a more authentic way of celebrating. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by family, work or friendship obligations, feeling lonely or looking for ways to make this season meaningful on your terms, this conversation will inspire and empower you. Karin established Pure Transformations in July 2022 and she works as a self-employed grief and loss counsellor, a wellbeing coach and a change management consultant offering support (online and in person) in English and Dutch. Sacred Woman Retreats offers supportive and heart-led spaces for women who are childless not by choice or circumstance. Did you enjoy this episode? In Episode Sixteen: “DeLillo's Sentences,” DDSWTNP take a brief break from analyzing full novels to do some very close reading of single sentences from across DeLillo's career. Style and craft, sound and rhythm, and what makes DeLillo (as one critic puts it) a poet writing prose—these are subjects we consider as we look closely at the lines noted below and try to figure out what DeLillo means when he says in 1997, “At some point you begin to write sentences and paragraphs that don't sound like other writers'.” This episode is a deep dive into DeLillo's language but also a pretty good introduction for those just starting to read him. #donutmaker #thehemingwayand DeLillo lines analyzed in this episode: “Much of the appeal of sport derives from its dependence on elegant gibberish. And of course it remains the author's permanent duty to unbox the lexicon for all eyes to see—a cryptic ticking mechanism in search of a revolution.” End Zone (113) “New York seemed older than the cities of Europe, a sadistic gift of the sixteenth century, ever on the verge of plague.” Great Jones Street (3) “Around the great stadium the tenement barrens stretch, miles of delirium, men sitting in tipped-back chairs against the walls of hollow buildings, sofas burning in the lots, and there is a sense these chanting thousands have, wincing in the sun, that the future is pressing in, collapsing toward them, that they are everywhere surrounded by signs of the fated landscape and human struggle of the Last Days, and here in the middle of their columned body, lank-haired and up-close, stands Karen Janney, holding a cluster of starry jasmine and thinking of the bloodstorm to come.” Mao II (7) “The last sentence was, ‘In future years, of course, men and women, in cubicles, wearing headphones, will be listening to secret tapes of the administration's crimes while others study electronic records on computer screens and still others look at salvaged videotapes of caged men being subjected to severe physical pain and finally others, still others, behind closed doors, ask pointed questions of flesh-and-blood individuals.” Point Omega (33) Other texts cited in this episode: “Tom LeClair.” Interview by Andrew Mitchell Davenport. Reports last week highlighted the challenges in the commercial property market, particularly in the offices sector, with some prized assets receiving offers well below the sale prices attached by agents, with banks moving on some borrowers who find they are in breach of their covenants.John McCartney is head of research at BNP Paribas Real Estate and follows the market closely. He joined host Ciarán Hancock in studio to discuss the latest moves in the commercial property market. He began by giving some context to what's happening in the market in terms of valuations and how private equity firms and the banks are currently viewing their exposures. In part two of this week's episode of Inside Business we hear how a new survey from recruiter IrishJobs noted how AI is increasingly being used in hiring processes. This is happening on both sides of the equation, with candidates using it for their CVs and covering letters and by employers to sift through applications.Ian Curran of The Irish Times reported on the survey and joined us on the line.Produced by John Casey with JJ Vernon on sound. Tension has spiked again in Israel. The sustained war of attrition in the north is intense and wildly destructive. People are dying and a large swath of the country has been not just rendered uninhabitable but basically, destroyed. Everything. Homes, businesses, infrastructure. As expected, the hostage families are advocating constantly and in full force for the negotiation of an agreement for the release of their loved ones from Hamas captivity. We know so little of their last nine and a half months as Hamas hostages. But we do know that they have been abused and tortured physically, psychologically and, many, sexually. And then there's the trip Bibi is taking to America to address Congress. The dissonance between his actions and the emotional despair of the people is profound. That he can place a speech ahead of the importance of being present and at least making an effort to appear to care about the exhaustion and depletion of the people – is not going down well in Israel. At such a critical moment in the nation's history, the Prime Minister should be here. Period. Welcome to Episode #147 of Way of the Bible podcast. This is our third of eight episodes in our nineteenth mini-series entitled, The Vineyard Owner's Son. On this episode, we're going to hear Jesus address Anger & Lust as recorded in the book of Matthew from what is commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. On our last two episodes #145 & #146, we were introduced to the beatitudes, the disciples being salt and light, and Jesus coming to fulfill the LAW. Let me clarify what I mean by being “introduced to.” For the past two mini-series, and even before, I have been emphasizing the benefits of engaging the scriptures in some form of meditative prayer for the specific purpose of spiritual formation. Paul noted this spiritual formation in terms of mind transformation in Romans 12:1-2 – I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.I came to understand through my own experience that these are not merely pretty words of religious traditions penned by Paul or his scribe. So much to say here but not enough time to cover in a sound bite; but I'll try and be brief.Paul describes and illuminates the path of all believers as established by Jesus himself in Ephesians 4:11-14 – And he [Jesus] gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.FULL STOP: This means stop all movement and assess the situation. Very few, I would even go as far to say extremely few, who read this passage stop to consider what Paul is saying. When I got to this verse in my Podcast overview of the book of Ephesians the Holy Spirit showed up and gave me a FULL STOP. I've never been the same since the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to see and my ears to hear.
