Childless, Holidays, Boundaries & Belonging: Navigating Workplace Equity

The Full Stop

Katy Schnitzler returns to The Full Stop five years on — now fresh off submitting her PhD — to dig into one of the thorniest workplace issues for people who are childless not by choice: holidays, leave, and boundaries. The conversation moves from the personal (the strange non-celebration of finishing a PhD, the "full stop" feeling of an ending without ceremony) into the structural: school-holiday leave bias, rota and shift unfairness, "informal favours" for parents, and the particular pressures faced by teachers, midwives and nurses who are childless. Katy shares findings from her doctoral research and her Pronatalism at Work project, and the group works through practical, non-judgemental ways organisations can make leave, language and culture fairer for everyone, without taking anything away from parents. We're talking about ... Holiday and school-term leave bias against childless employees "Informal favours," rota unfairness and the assumption that childless staff have nothing to rush home for Teaching, midwifery and nursing as flashpoints for childless professionals Ambiguous and disenfranchised grief — why childlessness grief isn't always recognised, even by therapists Pronatalism in the workplace: baby showers, scan photos, "doing it for the kids" culture The intersection of childlessness with disability, chronic illness, singleness and bereavement Practical, low-cost fixes: transparent leave/booking systems, anonymous feedback, external training, first-come-first-served leave policies Takeaways Holidays are emotionally loaded for people without children — naming that openly (without banning the topic) helps everyone. "Gentle challenge" responses ("that's not always how it feels") put the work back on the person making assumptions, not the person experiencing them. Transparent, first-come-first-served leave systems can remove parental status from the equation entirely. Anonymous feedback on workload and leave can surface disparities before they become resentment. External, MIST training takes the emotional load off the person going through it — they don't have to "out" themselves to get change. This isn't bashing parents. It's about making space at the table for everyone's story. Guest Katy Schnitzler — academic and corporate trainer specialising in reproductive health and childlessness (pregnancy loss, infertility, menstrual health, menopause). Founder of MIST Workshops (est. 2020), and author of doctoral research including the Pronatalism at Work project. If you know anything about Jesuit formation, you probably know that it takes a long time: two years for novitiate, three years for first studies, three more of regency, and then two or more years of theology studies and then—if a Jesuit has discern the priesthood—ordination. On average, a Jesuit is looking at ten to twelve years before becoming a priest! So, formation takes a long time. But then, once you're a priest, you're all set, right? Wrong! There's another stage of Jesuit formation called tertianship. This is a stage of renewal and recommitment, a period of time that happens years after ordination when a Jesuit returns to some of the foundational documents and experiences of Jesuit life. The Jesuit makes the Spiritual Exercises again, prays with the Constitutions and more. Tertianship takes a Jesuit out of their usual routines, often for an extended period of time, and prepares them for final vows. Tertianship has always been a little mysterious, for host Eric Clayton, at least. That's why he was so excited to talk to his friend, Fr. Andrew Laguna, who just returned from his tertianship in Salamanca, Spain. And that's the conversation you're about to hear today. Andrew breaks down what tertianship is, why it's important, what graces he experienced while there and, ultimately, why it matters for all of us, whether we're Jesuits or not. Whether you're interested in Jesuit life or formation or just want to hear from a wise Jesuit priest eager to share about how God is at work in his own vocation, you won't want to miss this conversation.

Jesse Montgomery joins Michael Stauch to discuss It Is Not Enough to Survive: The Young Patriots Story (UNC Press, 2026). They examine how young white migrants from Appalachia and the South fought police brutality, racism, economic exploitation, and displacement through community organizing, and even joined forces with Fred Hampton's Black Panther Party and the Young Lords to create the original Rainbow Coalition in the streets of Chicago in the 1960s and ‘70s. Highlights include: How the Young Patriots evolved from street gang to political organizers active in Chicago's “Hillbilly Harlem,” the Uptown neighborhood; A reminder that poor white workers made up the large majority of migrants from the South during the Great Migrations of the 20th century; How the Young Patriots attempted to “re-signify” the Confederate flag, paralleling efforts by “race traitors” like Noel Ignatiev to reframe white workers in a context of interracial class solidarity; How the story of the Young Patriots is also a story of urban renewal, and the fight against it, in Chicago; A discussion of Merle Haggard's “Okie from Muskogee” and the role of country music in the culture wars of the 1960s. Stopping the Agent Sprawl: Why Cranking The Dial on Autonomy is Financial and Operational Suicide

Unmet generative AI promises, flatlining ROI dashboards, and a relentless corporate appetite for unguided technological progress. By all logic, one would assume we'd take a strategic pause to change course and build foundational human competence. Instead, in a desperate panic, we're witnessing the birth of "AI agent sprawl,” autonomous activity deployed without a map, GPS, or off-switch.  This week, I examine what happens when companies try to use autonomous AI as a strategic shortcut to force unfulfilled promises into reality, and how it's fracturing their operational architectures and budgets. You'll see why we have to move past the open-ended rollout hype, put a full stop on unmanaged agental capabilities, and install strict human oversight mandates before these tools trigger a catastrophic bottom-line crisis.  My goal is to get you off cruise control by highlighting the following opportunities to protect yourself and your organization:Deconstructing the Autonomy Sliding Scale: We need to stop treating AI agents like a mythical, binary technology that just arrived from space. Autonomy is a volume knob we've been turning up for decades. The real danger occurs when you spin that dial to a ten, completely relinquishing task-by-task control to a digital intern running continuously on autopilot without verifying if your structural architecture can handle the noise.  Exposing the SharePoint Trap with Fangs: In the cloud migration era, corporate America turned on SharePoint thinking "what's the harm," only to create an unmanaged jungle of duplicate data and orphaned sites that acted as a silent productivity torpedo. Agent sprawl is that exact same mistake on steroids because a messy SharePoint folder couldn't rewrite your product codebase, communicate with your clients, or execute legally binding corporate spend decisions. Agents can, and left running on autopilot after an employee leaves, they become an invisible, permanent liability.  Halting the Autopilot Spend Shock: The financial consequences of ungoverned agent loops are hitting corporate balance sheets hard, mimicking the familiar spend shock of dictionary-thick cell phone bills from the early 2000s. I highlight some recent examples like Uber vaporizing its entire annual AI budget in four months due to recursive agent rework loops, Microsoft aggressively clawing back developer licenses, and a jaw-dropping $500 million single-month bill racked up by an enterprise trapped in an infinite loop.  By the end, I hope you're convinced the solution isn't about stopping technology. It's about halting the wide-scale rollouts to reinvest heavily in human AI competence. We must move past the vendor hype, place the right people in the right loops at the right times, and establish the disciplined guardrails required to surgically agentize our operations safely.  ⸻If this conversation was helpful, make sure to like, share, and subscribe. Let's Just Say It Out Loud: AI Is Not Dangerous

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2026 41:30

“Let's just say it out loud,” Keith Teare, publisher of the That Was the Week newsletter, says. “AI is not dangerous.” Not all of you will agree. I'm certainly not so sure. But the gruff Yorkshireman is convinced that AI can only benefit humanity. For him, with his scientific faith in historical progress, today's AI revolution is a glorious combination of the Enlightenment and the industrial revolution. The only danger, he warns, is the belief in danger itself. Thus his criticism of Anthropic's Dario Amodei, who has been quite explicit about AI's dangers — and for whom the doom narrative is, in Keith's reading at least, designed as a business strategy to solicit governmental backing without government control. AI Is Not Dangerous. Repeat it. Take your ideological medicine. As if you're in a Silicon Valley seminary. Sing it out loud. As if you're in a Methodist choir. Believe it now? Five Takeaways •       The Economist's “Lowlife” Moment: Keith's editorial was triggered by The Economist's forty-five-minute video on the five men running AI — the title alone, “How to Control the Men Who Control AI,” was enough. Why would The Economist think it could control them? And why focus on the personalities rather than the technology, the applications, or the actual human impact? Judging the AI industry by its CEOs is like judging a film by the leading actor's personality rather than the script or the performances. It's the wrong focus — and in Keith's view, a low one for a publication that should know better. The cult of personality is a media creation, feeding on controversy because controversy sells subscriptions. •       AI Is Not Dangerous. Full Stop. Keith's boldest claim: AI is not dangerous — not a little, not potentially, not in the wrong hands. The doom narrative is a media-driven frenzy, fed by CEOs who give it too much airtime and by a readymade audience of Americans whose well-founded economic pessimism makes them receptive to negative messages. The Stanford AI Index Report shows that America is the country where AI is trusted least — paradoxically, also the country where media has the greatest influence. In China, people trust AI more, not because the government tells them to, but because economic progress gives them reasons for optimism. You get what you pay for. •       Amodei's Pitch Disguised as Science: Keith's reading of Dario Amodei's doom narrative: it is a business strategy. The message — AI might kill us all, AI might make us all unemployed — is not a scientific assessment. It's a pitch for Anthropic specifically: if AI is this dangerous, you can't let anyone else control it, so trust us and give us government backing without government oversight. Contrast with Demis Hassabis, who acknowledges risk and then immediately explains what he's doing about it — taking responsibility rather than pointing the finger. And contrast with Zuckerberg, who Keith describes as sociopathic: “whatever serves my interest is gonna come out of my mouth at any given moment.” •       Consensus Capital and the Winner-Take-All Endgame: Keith's post of the week: 75% of all venture capital raised goes to five funds, and 75% of all VC investment goes into five companies. Noah Smith's piece on winner-take-all AI makes the same point from a different angle: linear extrapolation suggests two, maybe five, companies end up with all the money and power. This is what capitalism does — many car companies became a handful, many banks became a handful. AI will produce the same centralisation, but at unprecedented scale and across every domain simultaneously. The question — how does society benefit? — is the most important question of the era. Altman and Musk at least try to answer it. The others don't. •       Manifest Agency. Lean In. Keith's advice to young people who distrust AI: get involved and shape it, because the alternative is to be a victim of whatever outcome arrives without you. AI is valid and inevitable. The question is what influence you have over it, and the answer is: more than you think, but only if you exercise it. Musk and Altman, for all their faults, are two people who do care — and who talk about UBI and universal high income because they understand that the winner-take-all endgame raises genuine questions about distribution. The Sophie Haigney argument — that all the worst people want to be high-agency — has it backwards. A world without agency is a world where elected officials are accountable to no one. About the Guest Keith Teare is a British-American entrepreneur, investor, and the publisher of the That Was the Week newsletter — a daily curation of the most important stories at the intersection of technology, business, and culture. He is a co-founder of TechCrunch and a long-time interlocutor on Keen On America. References: •       That Was the Week newsletter by Keith Teare — this week's editorial: “The Cult of Personality.” •       “How to Control the Men Who Control AI,” The Economist, April 2026. In this episode of The Full Stop, we are joined by Civilla Morgan, one of the earliest and most influential voices in the childless not by choice podcasting space. After ten years and 180 episodes, she shares her decision to step away from her podcast, a choice shaped by grief, timing, work, and deep self-reflection. Together, we explore the emotional weight of long-term podcasting, the stories behind consistent content creation, and how grief can fundamentally change the decisions we make about our lives. Civilla reflects on what she's learned about childlessness over a decade of conversations, including the shared undercurrent of grief that binds the community, even as each journey remains deeply individual. We also talk about visibility, why so many people remain “hidden in plain sight,” the frustration of still being asked the same questions after years of advocacy, and why representation across many platforms and voices truly matters. Civilla speaks candidly about rest, redirection, and choosing to live a meaningful life even when the life you imagined didn't happen. This is an honest, generous conversation about endings, legacy, healing, and the courage it takes to know when something meaningful has run its course. In this reflective end-of-year episode, we - Berenice, Sarah, and Michael - look back on the past year, the growth of the Full Stop, and the conversations that have shaped the Full Stop Community and wider childlessness community. We also turn gently towards the holidays, and Christmas, a season that can bring joy, grief, pressure, and loneliness in equal measure. We explore how Christmas changes over time, particularly through grief and childlessness, and why it's okay to step away, rewrite traditions, or opt out altogether. From rejecting Christmas completely to rediscovering it through quieter, more personal rituals, this episode offers permission to do the season differently. The conversation touches on evolving grief, authenticity, community support, and letting go of the idea of a “perfect” Christmas and replacing it instead with compassion, flexibility, and self-kindness. This episode is for anyone who feels conflicted about the holidays, unsure how it fits into their life now, or simply in need of reassurance that there's no right way to do it. Today's conversation fits under the P of Pause Yes, I tricked you. Obviously Pause is not a word from the Humane Marketing Mandala. That's right. I'm putting the podcast on pause in 2026. Some of you know that I'm co-creating a new community called Inner Development at work, all around the Inner Development Guide framework, where we want to change the world, starting from within. Sound similar to Humane Marketing. That's right. I was practicing this framework before it even existed. Anyways, that community takes up a lot of my pro bono time right now, and I simply have to do in my own business, what I often help my 1on1 Coaching clients do in theirs: look at all the things we're doing, and then prioritizing which ones to continue to invest energy in. And unfortunately the podcast didn't make the cut. As you might know, creating and hosting a podcast takes a LOT of time, and I simply need and want to focus this time on other things right now. So I'm pressing pause right now. Pause but not Full Stop. Because I might still publish an episode occassionally, whenever I meet a new amazing human being that I just want to have a conversation with. So don't unsubscribe completely. Talking about unsubscribe. I also moved the show to Kajabi (because they include the podcast in my plan) and just transferred all the episodes over the other day. And guess how many episodes there was? 327! Yes, I know, the visuals say 220, but I've actually been podcasting long before the Humane Marketing podcast. The first show was called ‘Where Introverts Grow Their Business', then I renamed it to ‘The Gentle Business Revolution', which finally morphed into ‘The Humane Marketing Show'So yes, 327 episodes. Wow. I think I deserve a pause

From a childhood of protecting siblings, to two decades as a prison officer, to a coma that nearly killed him, to staring down his own mental health crash, Jamie’s story is one of survival without the victim badge. We got deep into coercive control, the truth about behaviour change, why 'good bloke' is the most dangerous PR spin in domestic violence, and how the smallest shifts in daily awareness can turn a life around. It’s gritty, it’s real, it’s full of big heart and big truth. And yeah... the internet dropped out about 87 times, but he was worth hanging in for. In this conversation, we're joined by Anne Barratt from Empowering Health who discusses her holistic approach to health, focusing on kinesiology and its role in understanding individual experiences of menopause and childlessness. Anne encourages listeners to embrace their femininity and creativity, highlighting that ageing is not an end but a new beginning. After two decades in corporate marketing—and many hope-filled years of trying to become a mother—Anne's dream of having children came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end. From that deep void of grief, she chose to rise. Determined to understand the “why” behind her journey, she immersed herself in personal healing and became qualified in a range of disciplines, including holistic health and counselling. Anne turned her own life around and went on to “birth” her business—a way to support others through emotional healing, life transitions, and creating lasting wellbeing. Her work is rooted in personal transformation, resilience, and a deep desire to help others break free from emotional pain, disconnection, and burnout. Inspired by her fertility journey and the grief of childlessness, Anne redefined what legacy means. Today, she channels that energy into helping women reconnect to their intuition, body wisdom, and soul truth—so they can rediscover joy, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose. While she doesn't specialise in deep trauma recovery, Anne gently guides her clients toward powerful “aha” moments, emotional breakthroughs, and energetic alignment to help them move forward.
