It's hard to believe we'll never get to swoon over a new Marty Byrde polo shirt ever again. However, we always have Ruth's iconic line "I don't know sh*t about f*ck" and for that we are so grateful. Listen up as we eulogize (and complain about) the final season of Netflix's "Ozark."
Jason and Nick discuss the final season of Ozark. Needless to say there will be f***ing spoilers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Who else has been binging Ozark's final season, Part 2 this weekend? We have your recap of the first four episodes (Ep. 8-11) and we're deep into the psychology of Marty and Wendy Byrde…who we relate to, how they work together, and how completely sideways they get when they're at odds. We're also transfixed by the grief-stricken vengeful version of Ruth, following her trance-like start set to the soundtrack of Nas' Illmatic (did you catch the bobcats? Carinn is obsessed since Kate dug that memory up) and building to her trying to find her own way to lead outside the shadows of both Marty Byrde and Darlene Snell. For us, this show is about so much more than whether the Byrde's will make it out of the cartel business with a clean, fresh start. Who will they be in the end, how have they grown and what have they learned…THESE are the things we're so excited to see! In the capable hands of these brilliant writers and actors we have no doubt this will be an ending for the ages (even though we will be so sad to see it go). Stay tuned for recaps of the final three episodes coming soon!
En esta ocasión nos cuestionamos por qué nos gustan tanto esos personajes inescrupulosos, malvados y con moral cuestionables como Marty Byrde de Ozark o Saul Goodman de Better Call Saul. ¿Será que nos identificamos más con ellos?
On this episode the gang start off by talking about the decision Marty Byrde had to make in season 1 of Ozark where he had a choice to have his cheating wife killed or spared from the Cartel he was in business with. Then shit goes haywire from ranging from big fires and fires and little fires all the way to how do you treat your significant other's family after they've died. On this weeks “So Here's What's Going on…with Dre” we discuss the Will Smith Chris Rock slap that kept the internet buzzin the last few weeks. Enjoy !!! Between Peacemaker and The Book of Boba Fett (and a shit ton of other tv shows), we've had quite the exciting January. Its honestly perfect timing, since January is the only month out of the year where no one judges you if you sleep on your couch every night or become a hermit (we see you trying not to drink, New Years Resolution people) We obviously are not capable of giving up alcohol. We both have tried, but it is not our battle to fight. Maybe Boba or Marty Byrde can take over for us. However, we are exceptional at sleeping during the day and staying up all night. ....and we kind of go back to our vampire roots with some fun (and very random) nerdy news. Why is it everyone we love has once played a vampire? Hmmmm....

In this acceptably NSFW bonus podcast we spoil the #*@! out of season 2 of Ozark, plus some slight Longhorns football talk at the end.
In this partially NSFW bonus podcast Jason nit picks the first season of Ozark now that he's finally watched it.
Einstein famously described compounding as the 8th wonder of the world. It’s the secret superpower that drives network effects, population growth, and the spread of viruses—clearly it’s a force to be reckoned with. In a recent conversation, Max De Melo and Patrick Niederdrenk of America One Luxury Real Estate illustrated another hidden example of compounding: reputation. They mentioned that they could essentially predict inbound referral business despite having absolutely no idea where it would come from on a one-off basis. For any Ozark fans out there, it instantly reminded me of the scene where Marty Byrde talks about casinos. On any individual pull on the slot machine, he couldn’t predict the outcome. But on the aggregate, casino results become probability math—super predictable. With a nod to “German Efficiency,” Max and Patrick mentioned that they basically don’t conduct outbound marketing. Their business is completely referral driven. And they’ve been growing. Fast. This means that Max and Patrick have found viral growth, another way to describe compounding. One good experience leads the customer to recommend America One. Rinse, lather, repeat. For a strange coincidence, I’ve also recently received a ton of inbound opportunities from people I’ve known for years and years. There’s a reason Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger put such a special emphasis on reputation—it’s a natural compounding engine. And for a final callback to Charlie Munger’s beloved idea of inversion, I think it’s important to examine what happens when you give a customer or a boss—or anyone for that matter—a terrible experience. You create an agent for negative compounding. In the episode with Dylan Lipari, he mentioned a terrible experience with a store owner. Dylan’s a nice guy, and he didn’t talk about it explicitly in the episode, but I bet he’d love to tell you where *not* to get your shoes repaired in LA if you talked to him in confidence. When you give someone a terrible experience, you create a motivated saboteur. Someone who will write bad reviews, give bad referrals, and basically become an unpaid intern for your competition. I like to call to mind the episode of How I Met Your Mother where Barney’s love life goes to shambles as a former romantic partner spread the news about his misdeeds. The bottom line: reputation is everything. Do all in your power to guard, enhance, and leverage your own reputation. Don’t do anything that would endanger it—it’s your most powerful asset. The questions of the week: What scripted response would you like someone to give if they had to talk about you? How can you turn those words from a hypothetical wish fantasy into a real-life review? What can you do to enhance your reputation? What low-cost actions could turn someone you know into an evangelist for you? How can you share what you know or who you know with someone else? So that does it for this episode. I hope it shows some threads to pull. If you’re interested in show notes or supporting the podcast, check out strategychainpodcast.com. On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Podcast, Graham and Jocelyn discuss Netflix Original series Ozark, starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner, along with an absolutely delightful cast of actors. Jocelyn offers a perfect (non spoilers-laden) synopsis of the show, and specifically the character of Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman. Before going completely into the cast Graham tells Jocelyn what he's learned about the place called The Ozarks, based on firsthand account of someone Graham knows, who grew up in Missouri and used to spend some summer vacations there as a child. Graham also describe how the seemingly perennial darkness (even in a sunny day) which depicted the Ozarks is real, according to Graham's source. Jocelyn is reminded of she's never had any desires to visit the Ozark, and how she's more convinced of it after seeing the show, even though she's fully aware the depiction of the Ozark is fictional. Graham & Jocelyn discussed the cast, and Jocelyn pointed out how all the women in the show seemed to be very self-sufficient, powerful, and sometimes downright scary. Graham asked Jocelyn to opine about Julia Garner's performance as "Ruth" for which she won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in the recently celebrated 71st Emmy Awards. Jocelyn is indeed impressed by Ruth the character and by Ms. Garner's histrionic abilities playing said character. The conversation continued into the Snells, The Cartels involved, along with other shenanigans which take place in Ozark. As an actor, director and producer, Jason Bateman’s all-or-nothing commitment has propelled him to success on both the big and small screen, in comedy and drama, and on both sides of the camera. He was awarded a Golden Globe for his performance as Michael Bluth in “Arrested Development,” and he won a Screen Actors Guild award for his work playing Marty Byrde in “Ozark.” Bateman is also a four-time Emmy nominee. In this episode, he shares what fans can expect from the third season of “Ozark,” his profound sense of responsibility, and his obsessive love of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It's a tale of two Netflix series, both starring Jason Bateman - one of which is in deep decline and likely about to end it's long run, and another of which is just getting started. Say goodbye to Arrested Development's Michael Bluth, and pray for Marty Byrde, who is forever just barely surviving the dangerous decisions he's made for himself and his family. There may always be money in the banana stand, but there are cartel members and crazy rednecks (or hillbillies!) in Ozark. Plus, uh - Kanye needs some help. You may have caught his very sad performance in the White House today - much like Trump and Jim Brown, I don't know what to make of it, but I am worried about him. Mental illness is no laughing matter, even though the transcript of his bizarre monologue is a little bit funny at moments. Mostly, I'm sad and concerned for the poor guy - but not as much as I am for Marty Byrde and his family, and for the cast of Arrested Development who apparently had a miserable time working with Jeffrey Tambor. I wish everyone, actors, musicians, politicians and fictional characters - it is getting hard to tell them apart from each other - only the best.
