From Cancer to Coma, at the age of 24 Matt Ode was diagnosed with stage 3C Testicular cancer. After chemotherapy and a very complicated surgery to remove the remaining cancer from his body, Matt encountered various complications. He was under the watch and care of the ICU for over 40 days and in the Cleveland Clinic for 53 days where he was met with a number of near-death experiences including 5 major surgeries causing a large open wound on his stomach. For two weeks, he laid non-responsive in a coma, met with complete kidney and liver failure, and went into cardiac arrest where nurses performed 8 minutes of CPR to bring him back to life. Doctors didn't know if and when he would awake, informing his family and girlfriend he would likely be on dialysis the rest of his life having to relearn everyday tasks like eating and walking again. Prior to the diagnosis and subsequent treatment, Matt was a healthy personal trainer weighing in at 185 lb. But this disease wreaked havoc on his body and in a matter of 8 months he dwindled down to a mere 110 lbs. Years later after hard work and deep internal discovery, Matt Ode is as vibrant, enthusiastic, and energetic as ever helping individuals transform their mind, body and spirt, as a transformation coach and highly sought after Keynote Inspirational Speaker. How much does your mindset affect your life? The answer is more than you realise Today I speak to Matt Ode who is a stage 3 testicular cancer survivor and transformation coach about his own story and how it brought him to where he is today He speaks about how he was diagnosed at 24 and up until when he went into hospital the only symptom he had was back pain How things happen for you, not to you Losing 70 pounds while in the hospital and the body image issues that came with it Taking small steps and how his knowledge from being a personal trainer helped him build himself back up Set massive goals but have mini goals to keep you accountable How telling his story brought him to speaking and then onto transformation coaching That you are the average of the 5 people around you so if you want to change your life you need to make sure you surround yourself with people who'll lift you up How hiring a coach will not only keep you accountable but will save you from spending hours trying to find what works best for you We also talked a little bit about the gym transformation programmes, how they are just marketing and don't take into account that people are different sizes or body types That you can always find time for yourself We also talked a bit about the differences between the US and Ireland when it comes to food and medical care at the end If you want to find Matt you can find all of his info on : www.mattodespeaks.com Where to find me: Instagram: @chrissyhfitness Tiktok: @chrissyhfitness Website: www.chrissyhawkins.com Want my FREE Kickstarter workout guide? In 2016, at age 24 years old, Matt was getting minor back pains then other pains began getting worse and worse to the where he wasn't able to walk. He was rushed to the Cleveland Ohio Clinic to do emergency testing after doctors found an 11-centimeter tumor in his small intestines, found to be cancerous and spreading quickly. His journey was far from easy and difficult to be vulnerable in expressing how he truly felt. Matt learned to be vulnerable and be ok with not being ok to cope and heal. Today he is a motivational speaker helping men learn to be more vulnerable with their emotions and sharing his journey of overcoming stage 4 cancer. There's a reason your parents didn't want you hanging out with certain kids. It is because we unconsciously pick up the behaviors and habits of the people we spend the most time with. Perhaps you have caught yourself saying that word you hate that all your friends say. You made a conscious effort to NOT say it, yet it still came out of your mouth. Your unconscious mind is ALWAYS learning and taking in information, even the information you consciously try to filter out. Your brain takes in 11 million bits per second and you are only consciously aware of 40-50 of those bits. By changing the circle of people around you will unconsciously influence your thoughts and behaviors and start to change. Couple this with a conscious drive to change your life and you are well on your way to transformation. Join me and Matt Ode, cancer survivor, motivational speaker and coach as we talk about the people you surround yourself with and the effects it has on your life. Hi My Name is Matt Ode and at the age of 24, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Testicular Cancer. At the age of 25, I was hospitalized in the Cleveland Clinic ICU for 53 days, forcing me into a 2 week coma, suffered complete kidney and liver failure, went into cardiac arrest, had an open abdominal wound from hip to hip and whittled down from a healthy 185 lbs to 110 lbs. Needless to say, I had to start my life over from rock bottom. Due in large part to my health and fitness background as a personal trainer, a strong mindset, faith, and amazing support system, I am now weighing in at 200 lbs and cancer free. On this episode of WE Have Cancer, motivational speaker and testicular cancer survivor Matthew Ode shares his inspiring advice for seeking purpose and joy during your cancer journey. From the power of finding a supportive community to practicing vulnerability to dealing with body image struggles, Matt delivers his top tips with optimism and grace. Matt’s advice for finding peace and purpose is to focus on what you can control, and allow yourself to be supported and encouraged by your inner circle of loved ones. Guest Biography: Matt Ode was 24 when doctors discovered an 11cm tumor in his small intestine, and soon diagnosed him with stage 3 testicular cancer. He even fell into a non-induced coma for two weeks. Cancer free since March 2017, Matt has since founded Mustaches for Matt, started a supportive survivorship Facebook group with over 4000 members, and shares his story as a motivational speaker about overcoming adversity. Table of Contents:How Matt Inspires Others While Staying True to Himself Matt says he always tries to find some joy in everything, and he doesn't change himself to make other people happy. He says, "Authenticity is the absolute key to attracting the right people in your life.” Matt believes the more vulnerable and authentic you are, the more comfortable others will feel when opening up to someone in their life. Encouraging Men to Open Up Matt believes a lot of men’s mental health issues, in general as well as within the cancer community, come from holding in their emotions. When men can open up and share and be vulnerable, anxiety begins to dwindle and men can happily, freely express who they really are. Dealing with Body Image during Cancer Treatment Matt speaks to the physical and mental effects of being a cancer survivor in your 20’s. He was a personal trainer before his testicular cancer diagnosis; a weightlifter at 8% body fat. In 8 months of intense treatment, Matt dropped from 185 to 110 pounds. To battle the body image issues, Matt says he would ask himself, "What's one thing I can do each day to progress a tiny bit?" Matt's Secret Weapons: Faith and Support Exactly one year after Matt met his girlfriend, he was being released from the hospital and told he was finally cancer free. He and Lauren had just started dating when he received his diagnosis. Matt's faith is his north star, and he deeply believes that faith and loving support from his girlfriend and family are the two things that got him through treatment. Losing Friends After Treatment Matt says he had amazing support while he was actively battling testicular cancer, but afterwards when he didn’t want to go back to his old life, that’s when he says he lost some old friends. Matt shares his friends expected him to go back to his old self: going out on the weekends, reliving the high school glory days, etc. Instead, Matt founded his business, Mustaches for Matt, and surrounded himself with other encouraging entrepreneurs and survivors to begin to cultivate an uplifting community. Testicular Cancer at Age 24 As a young, healthy, active personal trainer, Matt thought his sudden chronic back pains were related to weightlifting. Then one night he started vomiting blood at his girlfriend’s house. At the hospital, the doctors found a tumor in my small intestine. From an ultrasound, they discovered it was stage 3 testicular cancer, even though there were no symptoms in his testicles. Matt had RPLND surgery and later, lymph node dissection, to make sure the invasive, aggressive cancer was gone for good. Matt's Mission to Inspire and Empower Survivors Matt began sharing his story in 2019 as a public speaker and frequent podcast interview guest. He now seeks to provide the cancer community value and support with an uplifting survivorship, after his dad encouraged him to start a community group on Facebook. Since January 2021, the lively group has grown from 100 members to over 4000. Links mentioned in the show: Matt's
