This week I chat with John Miles; keynote speaker, author, combat veteran, and host of the #1 ranked alternative health podcast, Passion Struck! John shares his origin story - from Naval Academy graduate and military officer to Fortune 50 CIO and "recovering senior executive." Despite reaching high levels of career success, John realized that he nearly lost his sense of purpose. This was the spark that set him on a journey to finding his TRUE passion. John explains the meaning behind Passion Struck - it's not a single destination but an ongoing way of life focused on fulfilling your highest potential and serving others. He shares research showing 76% of people at the end of life say their biggest regret was not becoming their ideal self, essentially leading an unlived life. The key to being Passion Struck: tuning into your inner voice and intrinsic motivations instead of societal expectations or others' definitions of success. John profiles luminaries he researched (Oprah, Derek Jeter, Bono, etc.) who created lives aligned with their purpose by pursuing their dreams relentlessly. Our guest today is Travis Davenport, founder of Wolf & Iron, a company that helps CEOs and entrepreneurs build thriving cultures and workplaces centered around personal values. Travis discusses the importance of belonging to a "wolf pack" community that inspires and challenges you, while also developing close "iron sharpens iron" relationships that push you to grow. He talks about the difference between "hard skills" and "human skills," arguing that human skills like coaching, mentoring, and inspiring employees are becoming increasingly critical for company culture and retention. Travis explains how the nature of work is evolving - younger generations don't want bosses that command them; they want leaders who empower them as partners in the company mission. With more options available thanks to the internet and remote work, employees are seeking meaning and purpose from their jobs, not just a paycheck. Companies that tap into this desire through strong human-centered leadership stand to gain dedicated, mission-driven team members. When I first started my business, I followed the "ready, fire, aim" approach which caused much more harm than good. While taking action is critical, being strategic before launching would have saved me time, money, and headaches. If I could do it again, I would have treated starting a business more like baking a cake - following the precise recipe and steps in the correct order. I made many mistakes by winging it instead of aiming first. My goal now is to help others avoid those pitfalls so they can efficiently build thriving companies! Connect with Mike: Linktree Mike'D Up!
