James Chandler: Digital advertising needs to rediscover joy

Where has the joy gone in digital advertising? And how can we get it back? James Chandler, chief marketing officer at the IAB, thinks that while the start of the digital scene was "an incredibly exciting space", the feeling of "joy and magic dissipated" somewhere along the way.In a study with advertisers, the IAB found that this came down to two things: "unease" about the pace of change and a feeling of "futility mainly around creativity", where advertisers do not feel "they have got much agency" in a world of algorithms and AI.Indeed, as Chandler acknowledges, in a seven-year career at the IAB, there have been "big moments" including brand safety, fraud and ad-blocking – all of which have had "advertisers questioning the integrity of the performance of digital".So the focus should be on getting people to "rediscover" joy, fun and creativity in digital advertising.Chandler joins Ella Sagar to discuss joy in digital advertising and highlights sessions from the recent Engage conference, including talks from former UK MD for Twitter Dara Nasr and EssenceMediacom's Geoff de Burca and Lindsey Jordan. Highlights03:32: Why joy in advertising is so important and where it has gone 07:15: What would a two-tier dystopian internet look like?11.56: A rallying cry for creativity from EssenceMediacom strategy chief Geoff de Burca 12.38: Former Twitter UK MD Dara Nasr on making the internet fun 15:58: Holding a mirror up to society 19.47: Key takeaways from IAB Engage

We put the customer at the center and that means that we have to change the dynamics of the company, which for 150 years were built around building channels, wholesale, retail, travel, and e-commerce. And we kind of eliminated all these artificial barriers that the company built during many years."17:39 Going from 36 distribution centers to 2 globally - Andreu: "We were dramatically reducing our inventory and our working capital while we were increasing sales. How did we achieve that? We were putting all the inventory that we had in the company, including vendors, goods in transit, the stores, including B2B2C partners. We were putting all of this inventory at the service of customers" Find out more about Andreu in the link below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreu-marco-82835817/

Termination conversations and experiences are shared in this episode. The role-playing continues with Heather as an FR who is not doing well, shows no signs of improvement, and is at risk of being terminated. Listen to how Sabine is being direct and honest with Heather about her activity and production levels and how she discusses her options, pointing out that it is irresponsible of them to let her continue at that point. It is important for coaches to have these types of conversations with their reps so that they are not surprised if and when a termination does occur. They talk about the importance of setting expectations and minimums in order to maintain a strong culture. They also discuss the importance of being honest with agents about their performance.Highlights03:58 - This is a business that you've got to have momentum on your side, and you were negative this month in terms of production, which actually put you in the position of owing some money back to the agency because you haven't had a positive commission run for a while. And I feel like part of that is our responsibility to point that out to you and to help you transition to something where your gifts and talents are probably better suited. 09:15 - It's an unusual scenario for a development director to be doing terminations. You just have to be direct and help people, and it's not always going to be a positive experience. You hope that it will, and I think we've gotten much better over the years at handling terminations and not just like saying, "Well, fine. You aren't going to make it here. So, you're dead to us. We don't even want to look at you anymore."12:27 - At this point, I would disagree that the approach that you have been taking is working, because it isn't based on the results that you're getting. You may feel like it but based on the numbers, it tells us that it's not working. So, either we need to change the approach really quickly or seriously consider if this career is even a right fit for you. ContactHeather Price Consulting

And so what I mean by that is I think a brand has to understand what their core competencies are, and they have to understand the value that they are creating for their customer. And what is debiting that value? So our mission statement as an organization is to do the heavy lifting of e-commerce so our clients can focus on what they do best."26:10 Your core values will enable technical competencies - Dusty: "There are certain core values that are absolute buzz saws. And if you run into that one, it's a buzz saw. You're not gonna make it here if you just don't believe that. So looking for people that are core-value-focused, are people-focused, they understand that what we do is done through the hard work of people, who have a get-stuff-done bias or just GSD, it was get it done, and are client-centric. From prioritizing speed and reliability, ecommerce brands now focus instead on managing costs and cashflow.Steven discusses how they serve the SMB market and help them grow by keeping customers happy. He also digs into managing inflation during times of uncertainty and what the future holds for the logistics industry, and in Toronto in particular where Ninaad and Steve are currently based. ABOUT STEVESteve Bozicevic has been in the cross-border ecommerce and logistics technology industry since 2000. Mr. Bozicevic started his career at Borderfree.com as a software developer, then moved on to product management until 2010 when he joined Pitney Bowes and formed the Global Ecommerce division, where as Vice President of Product Management, he developed products and technology that launched and powered Ebay's Global Shipping Program. In 2016, Steve joined Amazon as the first member of the Amazon Global Logistics organization where he spent nearly six years building global trade-related technology, products and operations to facilitate B2C exports and B2B imports for Retail and FBA. In 2021, Mr. Bozicevic joined Flexport as Sr. Director of New Product Development. Knowing when it's going to get there allows the customer to plan ahead on their supply chain and say, If I know it's going to be 20 days or 40 days or 60 days, it's reliable, I can manage my POs, I can manage my cash flow according to reliability."15:51 Manage cash flow with just-in-time fulfillment - Steven: "Cash is important and how do you best manage your cash flow? In my opinion, similarly to how manufacturing supply chains moved to just-in-time production, I think just-in-time fulfillment is a similar kind of approach. Ordering smaller quantities more frequently, being more reactive to demand trends, making sure that you always got something in transit." Find out more about Steve in the links below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sbozicevic/Website: https://www.flexport.com/

In this episode we're going to take a deeper look at something we all do, sometimes without even realizing it, and that's make excuses. We often talk about how to overcome excuses in coaching but today we're going to look at why people make excuses in the first place. We'll cover the unintended consequences of making excuses, the benefits of excuses, and how to stop making them (or at least make less of them.) If you want to look at excuses from a different perspective, this episode is for you!Highlights03:15 It's developing a pattern or habit of making excuses that really gets in the way of success. It's once we start making excuses to ourselves to explain away unhealthy or unwanted behaviors or to justify why we didn't do something we were supposed to do. 06:58 When someone constantly makes excuses, one of the consequences is, you don't believe them anymore.Their credibility takes a hit and you start to see them differently. 09:49 Excuses also lead to procrastination. Making an excuse is a way of placing blame outside yourself and allows you to put off the pain of taking an action for a bit longer. 13:41 Excuses are the lies your fears have sold you. It is about fear. Nine times out of ten, we're choosing not to do something because we're afraid and then we make up an excuse. 16:11 Making an excuse on a regular basis is really a way of avoiding pain, avoiding risk, and preserving the status quo. In this episode of the Get Loved Up podcast, Koya talks to Co-Founder & Vice President of Mindfulness at Open, Manoj Dias. Manoj opens up about his own journey towards becoming a student of Buddhist wisdom, and how that learning paved the way towards becoming more mindful about life in general. As a teacher of meditation, Manoj urges us to surrender ourselves to cultivate flow and alignment and achieve stillness of the mind, body and spirit.GUEST BIOThrough mindfulness & meditation, Manoj has helped thousands of people around the globe trade mania for pause, so that they can live fearlessly in honor of a happier, more meaningful life. In 2015, he co-founded A—SPACE, Australia's first multidisciplinary drop-in meditation studio with a special focus on creating access for BIPOC and youth. Through his philanthropic work with lululemon he has supported trauma-informed therapeutic programs for refugees in Melbourne, social justice movements in Oakland, and mindfulness scholarships in New York City. You can't keep doing this. And so it manifested in a whole host of other physical conditions. There was depression for a period of time, there was chronic insomnia for about two years, there was an eating disorder for a period of time."14:20 Manoj: "Surrendering to just what is in front of us sometimes can feel like resistance. But it's actually the easiest thing to do to cultivate flow and alignment." 18:52 Manoj: "I generally meditate everyday. I have done so for the majority of the last 15 years. But I remember there was a period in 2022, there was so much going on and I was glued to the news. And all of this where I just couldn't sit."38:45 Manoj: " I felt like if I tell someone no, they're not gonna love me. I'm gonna lose their friendship. That's something I had to heal from and realize that no is sacred. Actually you should be able to tell everyone in your life no at some point and not feel like you're gonna lose their love." Please leave a five-star review for the Get Loved Up Podcast. Simply meeting lots of people is not enough, you need to carefully align your goals with those people you network with and that is what you call strategic networking. You can't possibly maintain a large network of contacts, so it's important to focus your efforts on the people who are most likely to be aligned with your goals and objectives. Find out how to identify your Inner Circle Contacts as Juliette shares how to efficiently prioritize your time and energy with these people in order to focus on the goals that you establish for yourself to achieve. Highlights03:14 In order to increase your effectiveness, you must create or tap into networks that are both strategic and productive. 05:13 You must learn to say no to low-value or no-value activities that do not align with your goals and you must learn to say yes to high priority action items that move you towards your objectives.10:27 Make sure you are prioritizing your ICCs, your Inner Circle Contacts, but first you have to identify them and cultivate those relationships. 12:31 Sometimes it's tough to know if you're going to get alignment. Somebody who could be new to your network could be very much aligned with you. So, what we're going to do with these groups is communicate. 13:45 Prioritize yourself. Prioritize your goals. Prioritize the people who mean the most to you and make sure they get time. Then you focus on the others. On this episode of the Get Loved Up podcast, Koya talks to life coach, mental health advocate, and affirmation musician, Toni Jones. Toni talks about being present in the moment, healing, spirituality and takes us with her to the journey that led her to discovering and inventing Affirmation Music. As a proponent of self healing, Toni hopes to touch more lives and help more people be attuned to themselves and their wellbeing, all in hopes of building a  better world for everyone.GUEST BIOToni Jones served for six years as a Life coach and Mental Health advocate for women and youth. Now as an Affirmation Musician, she found creative ways to promote the message of conscious well being through her music. Toni started making music as a tool for her life coaching clients to practice healing on the go. After great response from her first album she decided to make music full time. She has since released five projects so far: Affirmation for the Grown Ass Woman, Affirmations and Chill, I See Me Mantras, and Get Cha Mind Right (the mental health mixtape). Toni's music is healing music, she coined it as Affirmation music. Affirmations set to modern music, which is different from the traditional way of saying Affirmations and mantras that are usually set to relaxing new age music. By creating affirmations to modern music this allows the listeners to ride, be on the go and vibe, just dance to the music while still reciting healing words.Connect with Toni and follow her work through the links below: Website: https://www.iamtonijones.com/Be a member: https://www.wifeyourlife-vip.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/tonijonesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamtonijones/Twitter: https://twitter.com/IamToniJonesIamFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/IAMtonijonesIAMMerch: https://tonijonesmerch.com/HIGHLIGHTS03:11 To be tender is to treat yourself like a newborn06:23 What is self-parenting for adults?11:00 Early childhood and growing up in church13:24 Going back to school and independence 14:48 The birth of Affirmation Music19:39 How to feel what you want to feel21:34 Toni's self-care rituals 26:34 It takes a village to complete your hero's journey31:51 Avoid dwelling in scarcity and tap into abundance 33:25 Toni's thought process for writing affirmation music 44:11 Healing is a journey QUOTES11:21 Toni: "I just remember watching everybody praise God. I just remember this appetite within me. Like what is, what is making people do this? And I always had a curiosity, an insatiable curiosity for the unknown, the unspoken, but, you know, and so as I grew up in church as a teenager, I just remember asking provocative questions because I'm like we are learning about you. We learn about these miracles and things, but it was like, it didn't make me want to be a better Christian." 19:03 Toni:  "I asked myself these three questions, how do I feel? And I give myself the space in time. This is how I feel right now. I'm going to be honest. And then I go into the next question of how do I want to feel? And I go into what is the ideal emotional goal that I would love to embody today. And I jot that down or I spend time in my mind about what's true for me, how I want to feel."28:24 Toni: "Knowing when to say, I need help, I need support is monumental. It's monumental, even in business. Oh I need a team, I need PR, I need a manager. I need this. Let me bring this to the altar, to manifest those alignments and those relationships to make my business, to make my success, to make my finances that much more sustainable and healthy."31:51 Toni: "You know,  you can think on what's not here and go right into the emotional reality of scarcity. But then you can look at what you're saying at the present moment. Focus on what's here, what you can be grateful for and tap into that emotional reality of abundance, you know? And so gratitude is such an important practice because it helps you to get present in the moment in a way that is supportive for your future."38:42 Toni: "I'm going to love you forever. No matter what changes I'm going to treat you just like how oxygen treats you. Oxygen doesn't judge you. It supports you no matter what your habits, no matter what your practice is, no matter what race, no matter how much money, we're gonna treat you like the level of oxygen treats you."Please leave a five-star review for the Get Loved Up Podcast. We do have those pockets of time that could be dedicated to ourselves. I think it's important to ask ourselves what we do in those moments."12:15 Yasmine: "It can get really hard when you are literally holding everyone else and feel like no one's holding you. The invitation is to ask yourself what it would feel like to allow people to figure out how to deal with their own issues, to maybe not have access to calling you after a certain time, to give yourself the attention and energy that you're pouring into everyone else."23:02 Yasmine: "Whatever it is that you identify as, it's so important to question it because sometimes we're limiting ourselves by these ideas of what we think we have to be. And it may not actually be fulfilling what we want to be in alignment with."33:27 Yasmine: "The reason that we want to have space for the people, places, and things that we love is so that when we connect to people, we experience the joy of vulnerability. We experience the joy of connection. We experience the joy of being in a relationship with people." 33:42 Yasmine: "If I struggle with my worthiness, then I'm also going to struggle with believing that the people I'm in a relationship, truly want to be here."Please leave a five-star review for the Get Loved Up Podcast. More often than not, there's a history of trauma." 08:21: Dr. Buqué: "The way that I like to explain trauma, because I think it resonates more with who we are, human to human, is by explaining it as, the single experience that is very acute or an experience that is chronic, where a person would have experienced a level of stress that would have superseded their own internal capacity to cope. Basically, the stress was higher than the coping mechanisms that you had at the time to deal with that stressor."17:18: Dr. Buqué: "There are times when I feel for my clients, and I think that one of the harder things is not being able to take the pain away right away. Like having to sit with the pain is a very hard thing to do especially when you deeply care for your clients and you want to see them well. But you know that their journey needs to look like what it looks like in order for them to be liberated from their pain."19:18: Dr. Buqué: "The way that I do it is by making self care a lifestyle, rather than a practice. I make sure that everything I'm diving into has some element of caring myself within it. Every conversation, every project, everything that I do as I navigate through my work day has implemented within it something that honors me as a human."42:11: Dr. Buqué: "The relationship that you have with yourself is one that could really benefit from the daily attention. The thing about having a relationship with urself is we have to get honest. I think that's what scares us, that we have to be honest about  the things that are deep and dark. We have to get honest about the things that we'll find that we don't like, that will probably require us to shift and shifting is very hard for us. Change is very hard for humans."45:33: Dr. Buqué: "We capture a lot of the stress that we experience in this world in our bodies. And so whenever it comes to helping people, especially in the outset of them wanting to establish a healthier routine, I always lean on body-based practices. So I would lean on trauma-informed yoga, I would lean on sound-bath mediation that can really create soundwaves and sound medicine in your life. I would go with something that is, some sort of a body scan but that has a body component like progressive muscle relaxation or emotional freedom techniques and tapping. I would go with the body-centered, more nervous system regulatory practices first, and then get at the mind. Because we need a body that is in safety in order to transition to mind-based work."51:20: Dr. Buqué:"Even if you exist in a body that isn't suppressed and oppressed, you area existing in a body that holds privilege but as we all know, those privileges don't also exempt those humans from also being in bodies that are in high stress or in bodies that need to be liberated as well."Please leave a five-star review for the Get Loved Up Podcast. And so fighting fires is when you're spending all this time, putting out whatever's urgent, instead of stepping back and figuring out what is going on that's causing this and, and putting a stop to it."30:48 Courtney: "The only way to pay zero tax is to make no money."33:31 Jonathan: "Revenue generation is limitless, but cost cutting is limited. It's a plan and create intentionality around what you do with that money. It's not just a way to manage expenses and to minimize costs. This episode of Success Fundamentals features Dorian Kieken. Video game fans know him as one of the brains behind the groundbreaking Mass Effect series. Nowadays, he heads AI Redefined, an AI startup focused on implementing the path to safe artificial general intelligence through human and AI synergy. Dorian is very keen on find something that you're very passionate about, and looking where you can make an impact. At a young age, Dorian found passion with video games. With the industry being at its nascent stages and E-Sports very far into the future, Dorian found himself in love with game development.Despite finding success early in video games, Dorian didn't rest on his laurels and found himself becoming very passionate with AI, and the potentially wonderful impact it could have for the future generation. He predicts that AI could either save the human race, or become the end of it. However, he is mostly positive and believes in human AI integration as the future that we should look forward to. Dorian also shares how he believes in a more distributed form of leadership, as he has seen how power has corrupted people who had to wield it alone. Dorian confesses that he can never be one of the Elon Musk-types of the world, and prefers to share responsibilities to create a balance.HIGHLIGHTS03:38 Finding early success in tech with video game development07:53 Life-altering moments can result in career changes10:31 Building something from nothing as a gateway to entrepreneurship15:32 Human-AI alignment: Why is it a big deal?18:00 Our brains are still smarter than supercomputers, for now25:04 The AI of today vs the AI of tomorrow40:35 Advice for people who want to shift passions46:41 Manage your money so you don't have to worry about it49:46 Power can be corrupting; always best to share it54:11 Connect with Dorian and AI RedefinedQUOTES08:43 Dorian: "I needed to work on something that will have a positive impact on my daughter's life and genuinely in the generation to come. So I was not looking anymore for me as a sign of success of basically, making great games or having critical acclaim. For me, the sign of success is can I have a positive impact for future generations."20:33 Dorian: "The point I'm making is it's absolutely not futuristic and infeasible that within a few decades from now, we'll have a computer that far exceeds our computing abilities mixed with a computer that starts to learn in a very similar way to humans."20:56 Dorian: "It's very likely during the lifetime of my daughter, we will have a computer that starts to equal or be comparable, I would say to human intelligence and eventually exceeds it."29:01 Dorian: "Like everything we've invented, it doesn't just have a positive or a negative impact. AI is having both. It's detecting Alzheimer's 10 years before a human can do it or detecting some fantastic cancer cell on one hand, and it's promoting disinformation and craziness on the other." 33:39 Dorian: "Thinking you can control something that is eventually going to be smarter than you is like having a monkey that is super happy to have put a human in the cage."You can connect with Dorian through the links below.Website- https://ai-r.com/Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/doriankieken/Follow Success Fundamentals on the following links below: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4XCvuwxnFi5_7C6Ncm12xQLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/success-fundamentals™Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/successfundamentalspodcastInstagram: https://instagram.com/successfundamentalspodcast

And I had both my grandfathers present themselves to me. And as clear as it could be, my one grandfather goes, you can't die. You can't die yet. It's not your time. You have work to do."39:07 "It seemed normal. It seemed appropriate. It was just understood. There was no discrepancy. I could say the words coming to me now is where there was nothing that wasn't what it should be.41:13 "And that's what we went from. We went from this euphoric bliss and this experience with deceased loved ones to I just need to breathe right now. I need to come back, I'm back to we need to live right now."52:02 "I'm here sitting here in Beverly Hills selling mansions, and now these things don't matter to me. My value system is different. What I want is different. My relation to others is different. Everything. My diet's changed. My sensitivity is sunlight, music, noises, food has changed overnight."1:06:36 "It's okay if church on Sunday or Shabbat on Friday is not fulfilling. That's all wonderful. That's why it's good to have a business coach to guide you."18:15 "It doesn't have to be a whole bunch of clients. It can be one or two. And I started out at a very low rate and I started out on the side of my 9 to 5 job after hours on the weekends just to get my foot in the door and get comfortable."28:18 "The other thing is to just start. Again, I started without even an idea and I was able to, again, take what I've done in my 9 to 5 and transferred over into the position that I've created for myself and create this business."31:32 "I think there's such power in getting to know someone in a personal way because then they're going to tell their network about you just because they love you. And then if you have one client that you love and you empower them to tell their friends about you, then they probably have friends that are just like them."36:22 "Everybody scrolls Facebook. It doesn't take a second to go in and just comment on somebody's post especially if it's somebody you felt drawn to and that you enjoy their content and what they're doing. Just say hey and make that connection."39:24 "Business-building doesn't have to be hard when you have a clear plan and you have a strategy that you're willing to engage in and stick to and one that's right for you. And, quite honestly, building first Superfans is so much more fun than search engine optimization."08:10 "I think building for those magical moments in your business, in your following, no matter how big or small it is, is the key to growth and success and future-proofing your brand."08:36 "Focusing on creating Superfans is more important than any other activity in your business. It's more important than getting more traffic, more followers, more views, or more subscribers. It's even more important than building your email list and acquiring more customers because, when you focus on this as a byproduct, you'll get more traffic, followers, views, and subscribers."13:23 "That's your advantage being small, you have the opportunity to give some extra care to those initial subscribers, the initial traffic that's coming to your website. If you have 20 people on your email list, go reach out, have a phone conversation with each of them."14:48 "When you find the problems, you find the profit."23:34 "With any of your Instagram followers, for example, and it doesn't have to be Instagram, it could be anywhere, but send a direct message to somebody who's following you and instead of just texting it, shoot a quick video. And I'll tell you, the response is going to blow you away.""We all have the ability to become someone's favorite."

And this is awesome and I would recommend this for Instagram too for the simple fact that you're engaging and that whole, if you want people to engage with you, you have to engage with them."14:19 "I started using the word 'stakeholders' on LinkedIn and 'investors', I threw that in there, because when I'm talking about the benefits of building a personal brand because it's not always just getting new clients. It's for the people that I want to reach. I've seen them use the word 'stakeholders'."26:32 "When you get yourself into that positive mental space, it's going to make a huge difference then in the actions that you're going to take and the way that you take those actions which means they're going to work better."27:41 "The thing that you have to remember is that nobody has your stories and your energy and the things that you love. And that formula makes you have the unique brand that nobody can ever copycat."29:56 "One of the nitty-gritty things that I'll share with you as a tangible tip is, we could talk about hashtags, we could talk about captions, all this stuff, but I think that especially these platforms like Instagram are so visual, I'm a ginormous fan of getting branding photography done."38:43 "I really think that talking nicely to yourself, giving yourself space, that's really self-care. And so I have gotten into a pretty regular meditation practice. I say, 'I love you' to myself. I say, 'I look awesome today. You're awesome. You're capable.'"
