POPULARITY
Lately, we've been shown several examples of what this country used to be and what it has fallen to. Last week at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago you could feel what it's like to have a president and first lady who care deeply about this country and the people in it. Huge stars showed up to celebrate, some of the best musicians alive sung in celebration, and large crowds gathered to witness American history. Contrast that with a president who only cares about himself, his image, vanity construction projects, and keeping us distracted as possible from the havoc he is wreaking at home and abroad. The Qatari Prime Minister seems to agree as he snubbed J.D. Vance in Switzerland, ignoring him completely ahead of Iran peace talks. Join Don and comedian Jay Jurden to do one thing that always helps to deal with this administration: mock them.

As a part of this year's On Air Fest event, Don Lemon leads a no-nonsense conversation on the shifting media landscape and the rise of independent media, examining how creators and journalists are dismantling old power structures, rebuilding trust, and reshaping what news looks like in a creator-driven world. The media is transforming at a pace we've never seen before. From how we consume entertainment and sports to culture-defining moments like the Oscars moving online, the ground is shifting beneath our feet. Nowhere is that disruption more apparent, or more consequential, than in the news. As audiences walk away from legacy outlets and turn to independent voices for truth and accountability, the future of journalism is being actively redefined. Don is joined by journalist and sportswriter Pablo Torre, comedian Gianmarco Soresi, & friend of the show and comedian Jay Jurden. This episode is sponsored by 120Life. It's a new year, and tonight we're looking ahead at what's coming next. Last year, Trump and MAGA made chaos feel like the norm, and all signs suggest they're planning to take it to another level in 2026. So what should we actually expect? What fights are on the horizon? And how do we prepare for what's ahead? But it's not all doom and gloom. We'll also talk about the good things coming our way, the moments of hope, and where there's room for optimism as we start this new chapter. Joining Don tonight is the always-hilarious Jay Jurden, bringing sharp takes, big laughs, and some much-needed humor as we kick off the new year together. This episode is sponsored by 120Life. We're kicking off the year with a little love from our friends.
Comedian Jay Jurden explains why nine years of theater training is his "superpower" on the stand-up stage—and why he treats every punchline like a line of dialogue rather than a personal diary entry. His new special, Yes Ma'am, argues that physical specificity (from "rolling a wheelchair into affordable housing" to Marjorie Taylor Greene's hooves) is what separates a 300-level performer from a novice looking at their shoes. Along the way: memories of growing up in Canton, Mississippi, where movie sets for A Time to Kill. Plus, the greatest college football analogy ever delivered by a gay comedian—a warning against "scrambling" for viral crowd work instead of sticking to the designed play. For the final episode of season three, Gabe and Chris explore just what makes locker rooms such exciting spaces to cruise, with the help of the very fit and very funny comedian Jay Jurden. Like many queer people, Jay recalls being attracted to other guys while changing in his high school locker room. But it wasn’t until he became an in-demand trainer at New York’s cruisiest gym that Jay got a front-row seat for sexual shenanigans hotter than anything on Pornhub. To celebrate his debut Hulu comedy special, “Yes, Maam”, Jay cracks our hosts up with stories about what he’s witnessed in locker rooms over the years, what bodily fluid he told Anderson Cooper he should drink to get swole, and his expert advice for cruising in the locker room. In this hilarious, vulnerable, and fast-moving episode, comedian Jay Jurden joins Lip Service to break down everything from his new Hulu special Yes Ma’am to sexuality, marriage, family, and the wild reality of being a queer Black comic in today’s comedy boom. Jay opens up about filming his debut hour in New Orleans — “the gayest, Blackest city in the South” — and why the energy of the Joy Theater made it the perfect home for his special. Jay gets real about his relationship: being bisexual while married to a gay man, how they first met in college, who proposed to whom (yes, there were multiple proposals), navigating honesty, threesomes, poly dynamics in NYC, and why they chose to make their long-term commitment official. He also shares how moving to New York together shaped their marriage, how writing for Jon Stewart changed their lives, and why their wedding meant so much to their families. The comedy talk goes deep — from Paul Mooney’s legacy and “sassy” influence, to how few openly gay Black male comedians exist, to messy behind-the-scenes stories like the Breakfast Club interview that never aired. Jay reveals the pressure comics face to always be funny, how trauma shows up on stage, and why he loves when comedians “act up a little” in interviews instead of playing it safe. The episode gets even wilder when the group dives into dating culture, straight men “testing boundaries,” Grindr chaos, dick-pic economics, being catfished, OnlyFans, and the reality of queer men navigating hookup culture versus long-term partnership. Jay also talks about changing his voice around straight men, working at Abercrombie, coming out to his mom while watching Will & Grace and What Not to Wear, and why she always secretly knew. Jay shows love to the people who have lifted him up — Wanda Sykes, Bob the Drag Queen, Taylor Tomlinson, and even the cast of Abbott Elementary, especially Janelle James. He reflects on comedy’s evolution, how Black queer voices are reshaping the landscape, and why it’s crucial for younger comics to be given the spotlight. Finally, he breaks down how his Hulu special came to be, the risks he took to make it happen, and what’s next for him. Plus, Akeem Woods shares his viral Thanksgiving adventure — going to random followers’ homes for dinner — and the chaotic, heartwarming stories that followed. This episode is packed with jokes, honesty, queer insight, southern charm, and nonstop energy from two of the funniest voices in comedy today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jared sits down with comedian, friend, and world-class sh*t talker Jay Jurden, fresh off his new Hulu special “Yes Ma'am.” They get into what a special should really be in 2024, why joke-dense hours matter, and how comics are secretly puzzle nerds fitting together bits from tweets, clips, and crowd moments. Jay explains his philosophy on crowd work, why some comics are basically filming infomercials instead of shows, and what it means to actually respect the people who work all day, then pay to watch you work. Then things get delightfully unhinged as they break down queer sexting etiquette, AI booty, real ass on God's green earth, and why we might need to regulate tech just to protect Miami poolside content. Jared closes with their games “Expand on That” and “Talk Shit or Get Bit,” letting Jay riff on Kim K as a lawyer, shorter days, and Thanksgiving, all while reminding you to go watch “Yes Ma'am” on Hulu !Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/JTRAIN and use code JTRAIN and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup!

In this episode of Selective Ignorance, host Mandii B sits down with comedian Jay Jurden for a dynamic and humorous deep dive into today’s most pressing cultural and political conversations. The episode opens with Mandii welcoming listeners and sharing updates from her week [00:00 Introduction and Book Promotion], setting a lighthearted yet inquisitive tone. She then introduces Jay, kicking off a conversation that’s equal parts sharp-witted and socially aware [00:54 Local Politics and the New Face of Leadership], as they unpack how new political voices are reshaping local communities and bringing authenticity back to leadership. The discussion shifts as Jay reflects on his latest comedy special and how personal experience informs his work [02:05 Guest Introduction and Comedy Special Discussion], blending humor with honesty about identity, politics, and social responsibility. Mandii and Jay dive into the power of using comedy as both a coping mechanism and a form of activism [04:34 Comedy and Personal Experiences], offering listeners a behind-the-scenes look at how laughter can bridge uncomfortable conversations. The energy picks up as the two tackle the realities of gentrification and community integration [09:19 Gentrification and Community Integration], particularly how cultural shifts transform neighborhoods and the tension between revitalization and displacement. From there, the duo unpacks the blurred line between flirting and harassment in politics [13:19 Politics and Flirting vs. Harassment], using recent stories from New York’s local political scene [16:27 New York Politics and Relatability] as examples of how power and perception influence public trust. The conversation takes a more analytical turn as Mandii and Jay discuss the government shutdown and its ripple effects on working-class Americans [21:47 Government Shutdown and Its Impact], linking it to the larger issue of SNAP benefits and political responsibility [24:53 SNAP Benefits and Political Responsibility]. They emphasize how political decisions directly affect everyday lives, challenging listeners to think beyond party lines. Transitioning to the digital age, the hosts dive into digital racism and AI representation [30:32 Digital Racism and AI Representation], dissecting how algorithms perpetuate bias and how emerging technologies, like AI-generated music, are reshaping creative industries. Jay shares his insights on navigating identity in a digital world where authenticity is often at odds with virality. The tone lightens as they celebrate the vibrancy of The Bronx’s culture and community [37:33 Exploring The Bronx: Culture and Community], before taking a curious detour into “cruising” culture [38:21 Understanding Cruising: A Cultural Phenomenon], exploring its historical and social significance with humor and openness. The two then reflect on how comedy intersects with politics [40:57 Comedy and Politics: Navigating Sensitive Topics], particularly how comedians balance freedom of speech with accountability in an increasingly polarized society. As the discussion unfolds, Mandii and Jay examine AI’s growing influence in music through the emergence of artists like Zaniyah [47:03 AI in Music: The Rise of Zaniyah], questioning what creativity means when technology starts to mimic human emotion. The dialogue seamlessly transitions into celebrity controversies [54:03 Celebrity Controversies: The Case of Nicki Minaj], where they analyze how fame, social media, and public opinion collide in shaping narratives around high-profile figures. Finally, the episode winds down on a reflective and empowering note as Mandii shares her appreciation for dining alone [01:03:16 Dining Alone: Celebrating Solitude], turning the simple act into a metaphor for self-care, confidence, and independence. The conversation closes with heartfelt reflections on community and support [01:10:40 Closing Thoughts: Community and Support], reminding listeners that balance, boundaries, and self-awareness are key to thriving in both personal and social spaces. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Follow the guest on Social Media @jayjurden Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Brian and Judson celebrate the victory of mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and the fact that friend-of-the-podcast Brandon Kyle Goodman has extended their run in HEAUX CHURCH off-Broadway at Ars Nova through November 21. Brian raves about the Broadway play Liberation by Bess Wohl. Judson's trick is a treat on Halloween. Brian prepares for a sex party by listening back to his own advice on a previous episode and discovers he may, in fact, be vers. After listening to the Hookup of the Week, the two wax nostalgic for their younger years, hooking up in bars. They are then joined by comedian, writer, and actor Jay Jurden, whose debut television special, “Yes, Ma'am,” is now streaming on Hulu. Jay discusses the journey to getting “Yes, Ma'am” on screen, why it was important for the special to be so sex-positive, the necessity of stand-up for marginalized audiences, the new hour he is taking on his “Nothing Special" tour, his 14-year relationship with his now husband, identifying as bisexual, his former career as a personal trainer, his possible future on Broadway, and his deep, queer connection to Marvel's X-Men. To cap off the episode, Jay helps Brian and Judson respond to a Go Ask Your Dad question from a listener who is hurt after his partner declines his request for sex, only to go and have a repeat hookup with someone else. In this special Chit Chat Wednesday episode of the JTrain Podcast, host Jared Freid sits down with comedian Jay Jordan for an engaging conversation about the evolving world of stand-up, navigating life on the road, and staying true to one's comedy roots. Just back from Australia, Jay shares his experience of traveling to develop new material despite no upcoming special. He reflects on the importance of cultivating authenticity in an industry driven by expectations and social media trends. The discussion delves into the rise of sanitized versions of ourselves in comedy, where both Jay and Jared express frustration with tech-driven approaches to stand-up. Jay explains the delicate balance between making a connection with an audience while not compromising one's artistic integrity. As the conversation flows, they explore how the business is shifting, particularly the role of social media management and its influence on the comedy industry. The two comedians also address the growing complexity of crowd work—where comedians once had full control over their interactions with the audience, but now find themselves navigating the delicate line between performance and real-time engagement. The episode also tackles personal and professional growth, with Jay offering candid commentary on his marriage, the challenges and joys it brings, and how it relates to his comedic journey. From the ups and downs of married life to the absurdity of fashion choices in snow-covered locations, the two dive into a playful and thoughtful "Peaks and Pits" segment.Tune in for an entertaining and thought-provoking conversation about the intersection of comedy, social media, personal relationships, and the ever-shifting expectations of both comedians and audiences in the digital age.Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors!Support the show and get free salads for 2 months & 50% off yourfirst Green Chef box.
