Let's start episode 712 of Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast. This question was sent by Jim, and he writes:“There is a topic that I, and probably every other church organist on here, would like for you to cover. And that is how to accompany the choir for the choral anthem from a piano score at the organ. It is a nightmare. Usually if there is a piano available, I will move to the piano to accompany the choral anthem at the piano, and I think the congregation and the choir and the Choir Director seem to prefer it. I know I prefer doing that, but sometimes there is no piano available.Thank you.A fan.Jim” This podcast is supported by Total Organist - the most comprehensive organ training program online. On a Friday evening in September I attended a beautiful concert of the Amwaj children's choir in Bethlehem. I had tears rolling down my eyes. Not only did the choir sound so beautiful, but also did I realize what Palestinian children in the Westbank are suffering through. And how their peers in Gaza are losing everything, their houses, their beloved ones, their schools, their chances, their future, their hope...I decided to interview Michele Cantoni, an Italian musician (violinist) who established the Amwaj choir with his wife Mathilde Vittu, the Choir Director. The Amwaj choir has two branches, one in Hebron and one in Bethlehem. Children who want to be part of the choir have to commit to all the rehearsals and the performances. There is no fee, the choir is for free, available to all children who want to make the commitment. The repertoire consists of songs in many different languages. They have performed in different parts of Palestine as well as in France, Belgium and Italy. This year they adapt the choice of the songs to the current reality with themes like solidarity and freedom. In this episode you can hear some soundbites that I recorded during the concert and of course the interview I did with Michele a few days later. If you want to read more about the Amwaj choir or if you want to contact Michele and Mathilde please go to : https://amwajchoir.org Connect to Stories from Palestine on social media, sign up for the newsletter, read more about traveling to Palestine and if you can, please support the podcast on Ko-fi. This episode checks in with Choristers Guild. I began my ministry in church music in the late-1970s and early 1980s, and Choristers Guild was a primary source I turned to for wonderful and high-quality children's Christian music. Back then, church music was organized around graded choirs and music ensembles. But during the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the "seeker" churches grew rapidly and with them the use of "contemporary" Christian music. During the 1990s "contemporary" Christian music became dominant. The result, often, was the loss of graded choir programs. In its origins, Choristers Guild had a strong focus on children's music. This episode seeks to learn of the state of things in church music and how Choristers Guild is navigating the challenges of the current situation with Christianity in the United States and music ministry. My guests are Katie Houts and Mark Burrows. Katie has worked with Mark in editing some of his music pieces. Katie Houts is the Sacred Choral and Curriculum Editor for Choristers Guild. Serving CG since 2013, Katie curates and edits sacred choral anthems, collections, musicals, curriculum, and teaching resources; she also serves on the faculty of the Choristers Guild Institute. She studied music at Wartburg College (Waverly, IA), where she majored in Church Music (Organ) and Religion. She has served in ELCA, UCC, and UMC congregations as Director of Music, Worship Curator, Organist, and Children's Choir Director. Katie is a published composer, professional accompanist, and a frequent clinician at sacred conferences throughout the country. She currently serves on ACDA's National Committee for Composition Initiatives, working to support and champion the work of living choral composers. Katie is based in Salt Lake City, where she leads choral ensembles throughout the community, including Rise Up Children's Choir - Utah's premiere contemporary vocal performance group for ages 6-18. She conducts RUCC's intermediate ensemble, Rise Up Ignite, and is the assistant director and accompanist for the advanced mixed children's choir. She also teaches second grade music and directs the 5th and 6th grade choirs at Wasatch Charter School (Holladay, UT). What Choristers Guild and other publishers say about Mark Burrows is this: Mark Burrows (b. 1971) is a composer and clinician whose works are published by many major houses, including The Lorenz Corporation, Shawnee Press, Abingdon Press, Choristers Guild and Warner Brothers. Several works, such as the Gettin' Down with Mama Goose Series, The Body Electric, and Outside the Lines top many best-seller lists. Known to little listeners as “Mister Mark” he tours the country performing concerts for children and families. His three children's albums – You've got a Song, Go Ape!, and Go, Galileo! – have won a total of nine national awards. His songs can be heard on XM Radio, and one song, Amazon Rock, was recently recorded by Nick Records for a Dora the Explorer album. Mark is currently the Director of Children's Ministries at First United Methodist Church – Fort Worth, Texas, where he leads the weekly Children's Message, a monthly worship service for families called Children First, and directs the 65-voice Youth Choir. Mark received his undergraduate degree in music education from Southern Methodist University, and his graduate degree in conducting from Texas Christian University. He lives in Fort Worth with his wife, Nina, and their two daughters, Emma and Grace. What Mark prefers to say about himself is this: Mark loves traveling the country reminding people how amazing they are and how, together, they can do amazing things! While Mark does not have perfect pitch, he does have “perfect dynamics.” He can tell, just by listening, if a piece of music is loud or soft. Mark loves cinnamon rolls and tacos but can't stand peas. He's a Ravenclaw, and he adores classical music (especially Haydn for his sense of humor).

A warm Mancunian welcome to all my listeners. In the second episode, the Meet the Mancunian podcast talks to Katie Geelan, Choir Director, Bolton Cancer Voices, Bury Fire Choir and Encore Youth Fire Choir. Katie expands on her passion for supporting community choirs in Bolton. Katie discusses the challenges and triumphs faced, including the recruitment of male singers and the impact of choir participation on community well-being. Katie also offers practical advice for anyone wishing to start their own community choir, emphasising the accessibility and mental health benefits of music. Tune in for an uplifting conversation that underscores the importance of community, music, and the power to inspire. At the end of the podcast, I play a segment of the Bury Fire Choir performance. In Katie's own words: “I think, with a choir and this is what I say to my members. Obviously, we've got singers of all abilities. We don't audition. People don't have to read music. We are genuinely there for anybody who wants to come and sing, but every member makes up that choir. And yes, it's me that stands at the front and fronts it, but it wouldn't be what it is without all the volunteers and the singers we have. Every single person makes up that choir and is there for the success of it.” #CommunityChoirs #Music #GM #manchester #community #SocialImpact #NonProfit Hosted by Deepa Thomas-Sutcliffe (https://www.instagram.com/meetthemancunian/). Being in a profession like music education comes with a lot of scrutiny. This can cause a lot of stress on us and make us afraid to be truly vulnerable - and not just with other people, but with ourselves. It's important to take time to look in the mirror and ask ourselves “What am I struggling with in the classroom?” and “What steps can I take to get better at it?”Mrs. Andrea Cruz, Choir Director at Caprock High School in Amarillo, Texas, joins us on this week's episode to discuss how music directors can learn to look in the mirror and ask the honest questions.SHOW NOTES: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1azjQL66FCwVzardOjSJ_MZ-9jZjwgI4G/view?usp=sharingConnect with the CHS Choir!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/caprockHSchoir/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caprockhschoir/Want a free piece of music for your ensemble to perform?
