Jim Justice told the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce that he's excited to welcome three new major manufacturers to #YesWV. He made the economic development announcements recently at the chamber's annual business summit. Babcock & Wilcox, a global leader in energy and environmental technologies, is investing $126 million in Mason County. State officials say the development will initially create 28 high-paying jobs with potential to expand. HandCraft Services, a leading provider of medical linen and apparel products, is investing $59 million to open a new facility in Berkeley County. State officials say that will result in 220 jobs. Prime 6, which produces high-performing charcoal and wood logs and was featured on television's “Shark Tank,” will establish a manufacturing facility in Buckhannon. The $35 million investment is expected to create 75 jobs in the region. Spokesmen from all three companies addressed the chamber. They cited reasons for choosing West Virginia included its strategic location and state economic development officials going the extra mile to recruit. This no-cost event is a celebration of the Appalachian people unlocking their potential, power, and purpose. Ground Up Gathering will welcome employers, partner nonprofits, economic development partners, and community members to Coalfield Development's West Edge Factory in Huntington to witness the life-changing work Coalfield and its partners are doing in Appalachia every day. Highlights of the event include a farm-to-table dinner, community workshops, tours of WestEdge and live music. Learn more: https://coalfield-development.org/ground-up-gathering/ #3 – From TIMES WV – A local success story run by a close knit family, Short Story Brewing is the recipient of the 2024 Family-Owned Business of the Year Award from the Marion County Chamber of Commerce. Rivesville native Aaron Rote, his sister Abigail Kopischke, and her husband, Mike Kopischke, started Short Story Brewing in 2017 after Mike Kopischke had been brewing his own beers for about eight years. Mike specializes on the brewing side while Abigail takes care of the business side. Rote handles the presentation side, such as the appearance of the taproom and working with people. Through their hard work, Short Story Brewing has opened three other locations outside of Rivesville: Deep Creek, Md., Charleston, and a new location in Morgantown. They also contribute regularly to the Rivesville area, investing back in the Rivesville Elementary/Middle School that Rote and his sister attended, hosting the Ready, Steady, Run 5K, and hosting community events in the distillery. Sen. Mike Caputo said how much Rote and the Kopischkes have given back is a testament to who they are as people. “They just got hearts of gold,” Caputo said. “They just always want to share their success with others. They don't keep it to themselves. They share it with others, and it's been great for the community.” Read more: https://www.timeswv.com/news/business/rivesvilles-short-story-brewing-named-family-owned-business-of-the-year/article_f46029b4-4aaa-11ef-84b6-a34465488bf0.html?es_id=cc739026f5 Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. We think of history in terms of grand, sweeping events and often forget that actual humans are at the center of it. Today’s episode reminds us that people drive history, everyday people like you and me who are swept up or have to react to these larger events. The discussion centers around Mike Caputo, a World War II B-24 Navigator, and his daughter Yvonne, the woman who helped him open up about the wartime experiences he’d hidden deep inside. While helping her father document his story in his own voice, she forged a stronger connection with him that she carries even today after he’s passed away.
Alright nerds, this one's for you. My mom believed I was going to be a world-renowned engineer at a young age because I figured out how to set the VCR up. I have since blown those expectations out of the water in the opposite direction as I can barely get my Xbox turned on these days. But the tech world is exciting and always expanding, and before it inevitably destroys society, I wanted to at least know a little more about what’s coming and what we have now. I spoke with super tech genius and software developer Mike Caputo about VR tech and more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jonathan-tony/support

For our first movie night, Vania (@surfmartian) and Eric (@conspiracy.of.cartographers) watch Hitchcock’s Rear Window. But before getting into it, we catch up a bit with each other. Vania found herself on the other side of the camera, while Eric contemplates the end of the season as well as a parking garage. This week’s answering machine was full with calls from @kino_pravda, @kollimatorn, @hannah.grace.photo, @space_critter, and @elgatomagnifico. We asked how cinematography and the movies have affected their photography, and we were not disappointed. Were Dziga Vertov, Napoleon Dynamite and the Cartoon Network all mentioned? Of course they were. Vania shares a bit about Kubrick and Eric feels the need to defend Rashomon. We then put down the cameras and plop ourselves in front of the screen for the main feature: Rear Window. After a brief introduction, we give Hannah Drew, actor and film photographer, a call. As a trained actor (and untrained photographer) she offers a perspective we couldn’t have. The talks winds from her own influences to the pros and cons of being a voyeur. We talk about why Hitchcock made Jimmy Stewart’s character a photographer and how “Jeff” was kind of a dick to Lisa, played by Grace Kelly. We ask if it’s okay to watch others, and what we can learn about our own lives through it. Most importantly, we ask each other which of the neighbors we’re most like. Vania and Hannah answer with certainty while Eric just can’t decide. Classic Eric. Following the call, Vania reviews Eric’s Exakta VX (the same camera used in the film). There is a bit of gear talk, but worry not. We’re back to reviewing zines with Andrew D. McClees (@andrewdmcclees) Sneer and Self-Loathing being handled by Eric, while Vania takes on Film ‘n’ Hawaii by Mike Caputo (@aloha_bigmike). We leave with the question: When it comes to action and sports photography, what have we lost in the conversion to digital? Thanks for reading/listening! Plus, which UW standout -- Joel Stave, Mike Caputo, Alex Erickson, Tanner McEvoy -- could make the most impact as an undrafted free agent?
How did the Matt Flynn and the Green Bay Packers get blown out by DeAndre Levy and the Detroit Lions? Was sophomore defensive back Mike Caputo a key missing element in the Wisconsin Badgers' defense against the Penn State Nittany Lions? How did the Badgers get overmatched as their BCS chances are now busted? Plus, we play our Friday conversation with Big Ten Network's own and former Wisconsin Badgers standout Brandon Williams. We discuss his thoughts on the 2013 Badgers, how he got into broadcasting, and more!
