Chris and Cristina chat with Dr. Ian Wallace, an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico, where he is the director of the Human Physical Activity Lab. As an Evolutionary Anthropologist, Ian's work focuses on how humans evolved to use their bodies and explores the costs and benefits of modern physical activity patterns for our health. He is particularly interested in populations transitioning from non-industrial to industrial and post-industrial contexts. Ian earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2013 from Stony Brook University, where his dissertation examined how physical activity and genetics determine limb bone structure. Following graduate school and an initial postdoctoral position at Stony Brook, he completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard and started his own lab at UNM. There, he focuses on measures of locomotor biomechanics and their ties to the health and function of the musculoskeletal system. Recently, his fieldwork has focused on the Indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia. In particular, he is interested in how their lifestyles are changing with the rapid expansion of industries, the market economy, and urban areas across Malaysia, as well as how these changes affect their health and risk of disease. ------------------------------ Find the papers discussed in this episode: Wallace, I. Each week we bring you the best music of all genres from throughout the world, and this week we'll be speaking with author Jenny Boyd. The last time she was on the show, back in 2020, was to promote her autobiographical book Jennifer Juniper: A Journey Beyond The Muse - which detailed her life as a model in the Swinging Sixties, spending time in the company of some of the world's most famous musicians - having been married to both Mick Fleetwood and Ian Wallace, and also being at different times a sister-In-Law to both George Harrison and Eric Clapton. That book was also a story of self-discovery, after courageously moving on from a divorce and substance abuse, Jenny earned her master's in counseling psychology and a PhD in Humanities. Which is where another of her books - Icons of Rock: In Their Own Words, comes from. That book, now available in hardback, Kindle, and Audiobook, is a major rewriting of her first book, Musicians in Tune. It was born out of interviews she conducted over the last thirty years, and it's a compelling and groundbreaking work on the creative process featuring insights from the likes of Sinead O'Connor, Mick Fleetwood, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Ronnie Wood, George Harrison, Phil Collins, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr, and Huey Lewis. Information about all of her books is available at thejennyboyd.com

In our lifetime we spend about 25 years asleep and for at least 6 of these years, we are dreaming. Dreams have fascinated philosophers for thousands of years, but only very recently dreams have become the subject of scientific study.  I am certain that most of you who are listening have often wondered about your dreams, where they come from and what they mean and why you dream at all. My guest today has answers to these questions and some of them are as surprising as they are enlightening. Ian Wallace is a psychologist who specialises in dreams and dreaming. He is widely acclaimed in the media for his live dream analysis. Ian has an encyclopaedic knowledge of dreams and the dreaming process and over thirty years of experience of putting his learning into successful practice. Since graduating in Psychology, Ian has analysed hundreds of thousands of dreams for his clients during his professional career as a dream psychologist. As the author of the best-selling dream books, ‘The Top 100 Dreams' and 'The Complete A to Z Dictionary of Dreams', he has increased public awareness of the value of dreams and sleep, and how to actually make practical use of them. Ian's experience and insight from this work leads him to believe that exploring our dreams is the most powerful and accessible way to realise what we want in life and how to achieve it.  Ian is the originator of the Dream Connection Process, a unique and powerful method that enables anyone to connect the imagery and symbolism that they create in their dreams to situations and opportunities in waking life where they can use this awareness to make a healthy difference. He uses the Dream Connection Process with even the scariest and most disturbing nightmares, so that the dreamer can identify positive actions to take in waking life that will help them connect with their deepest hopes and aspirations. As Ian says to his clients, “A dream is just a dream until you put it into action'. Cemre Demiralp is an incredible force of nature, not one to live her life without bringing meaningful change to the world. She has spent much of her art career thus far working at various museums and institutions, mainly with established blue chip artists and creatives: Kerry James Marshall, Robert Buck, Lara Favaretto, Ian Wallace, Simon Starling, Oliver Stone, Yoko Ono, and Solange Knowles. Currently, she operates the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship at Emily Carr University, helping to create programs, mentorship, and resources for supporting emerging artists and creative practitioners in sustainable, real world ways. Cemre is also heading up and organizing Emily Carr's grad art show, which opens this May.She was born in Istanbul, Turkey, the only daughter of a spiritual mother and atheist father. Curious and independent, and usually surrounded by elders & adults, Cemre was encouraged by her parents to have opinions—and to express them. At 17, she moved to France for schooling and at 19, she left her home country for Canada, where she double majored in Art History and Political Science at the University of British Columbia. Cemre's career in art kick-started during university, as she reached out to galleries and centres to offer her help.           In this conversation, we talk about her childhood in Istanbul; her journey into the art world and the existing systems within it that she hopes to improve; the importance of respecting another's journey in life; how feeling like a migrant is an untangling for her; how she brings what she learned working with blue chip artists to her current role at Emily Carr with emerging artists; interfacing creativity with running a viable business; the way she would approach curating an art show; what she wants others to know about the people & culture of Turkey; and more.

Rather than just viewing human behaviour as an abstract set of theories, I chose to step into those complex high-consequence situations and experience their reality for myself. As a result of my choices, I have worked professionally as a North Sea oil-rig roughneck, mountain guide, session musician, fashion photographer, commercial pilot, military psychologist, relationship counsellor, child psychologist, celebrity psychologist and artificial intelligence inventor.Although these may appear to be quite diverse professional roles (or the result of a short attention span), they are united by my fundamental fascination with human nature and my continuing research into how people find meaning, purpose and potential in the work that they do.The work I do with dreams forms a fundamental part of my psychology practice. It has proven to be one of the healthiest and most natural ways of developing those human superpowers of self-awareness and situational awareness. My work with dreams is focused on the practical application of our night-time dreams as a positive and healthy method to help us achieve our waking life dreams and ambitions. This practical approach has led to regular appearances on television and radio around world, and becoming the best-selling author of The Top 100 Dreams: The Dreams That We All Have And What They Really Mean and The Complete A to Z Dictionary of Dreams: Be Your Own Dream Expert.https://ianwallacedreams.com/

Today on the Viall Files we are decoding your dreams with dream psychologist, Ian Wallace. Ian is a best-selling author and popular broadcaster who is widely acclaimed in the media for his live dream analysis. Nick and Ian dive right in, starting with analyzing dreams about infidelity (and sex in general), what they mean and how we can translate our dreams into actions. Ian explains why it is more common for men to have vivid dreams and walks us through the top 5 most common dreams. Ian then breaks down the symbolism behind our very own Viall Files teams' recurring dreams, dreams of being pigeon holed, sleep paralysis vs. lucid dreaming, and dreams about death. He'll show us how our dreams are the ultimate self portrait and how we can process and remember dreams by using “will, still, and fill.” “People used to think dreams happen to them, when really, you happen to the dream.” Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode and as always send in your relationship questions to asknick@kastmedia.com to be a part of our Monday episodes.  Check out our new "Introvert" merch at www.viallfiles.com today! Andrew Guthrie Milne was a Perth railwayman who in around 1902 took up stereo photography as a hobby. Active in competition, Andrew and his wife Harriet took his 3D camera around Scotland with the objective of creating great photographs. One hundred years later Sunny16podcast listener Ian Wallace (@ian_onahillroad) undertook a project of over 10 years duration that turned out to be a photo history adventure. Eventually, it led to him to revisit every one of the locations Andrew placed his camera a hundred years before. In this podcast Jim Duncan (Andrews' Great Nephew) and Ian (Andrews' Gt Gt Nephew) discuss Andrews photographic work, stereophotography in general and how the project led to the book "On a Hill Road". Ian would like to especially thank Jim (who is a well known country music broadcaster on WCR FM) and his wife for their help creating this recording. Back in 2014, Corey Knowlton paid $350,000 for a hunting trip to Namibia to shoot and kill an endangered species.  He’s a professional hunter, who guides hunts all around the world, so going to Africa would be nothing new.  The target on the other hand would be. And so too, he quickly found, would be the attention.  This episode, producer Simon Adler follows Corey as he dodges death threats and prepares to pull the trigger.  Along the way we stop to talk with Namibian hunters and government officials, American activists, and someone who's been here before - Kenya’s former Director of Wildlife, Richard Leakey.   All the while, we try to uncover what conservation really means in the 21st century. Reported & produced by Simon Adler with production help from Matthew Kielty. Watchmen is filled with history long forgotten. The saddest portion of that fact is the history in question is our own. While history has tried hard to hide the blood stains of The 1921 Tulsa Massacre and the optimistic spirits of Black Wall Street – their importance finds new life in the famed DC Comics heroes. Equally, as forgotten, is the place where Angela and Cal find their last name from. In the early 1970s, Blaxploitation found its audience through several new films. One of which was 1977’s Abar: The First Black Superman. While it might be an obscure piece of cinema history, its message in nonetheless relevant to today’s culture. Join us as we discuss the film’s importance, relation to the Watchmen series, its themes and more. Ian Wallace survived our Nicolas Cage November experiment and we once again Face/Off for this timely film review. This week, I'm away for work so it's been impossible to create a full episode. However, there are two important Yes updated we need to cover so I attempted to connect with Mark from my hotel room - which worked, a bit... So what we have is a very short episode covering the announcement of the US Tour dates for 2020 and the press release from Dave Watkinson which I've copied below: JON ANDERSON and THE WARRIORS The Book, Vinyl EP Record and Accrington Display March – April – May 2020 28 - March - Paperback Book release 30 - March - Jon & The Warriors Vinyl Demos EP Record release 27 - April - Accrington Library Display Opening Day and Signing 30 - May - Accrington Library Display - Warriors member - Signing   JON ANDERSON BOOK Jon Anderson and The Warriors - the road to Yes A meticulously researched book about Jon Anderson and his early band The Warriors (who also featured future King Crimson drummer Ian Wallace). Published by Sonicbond Publishing in the UK it has 208 pages. It features 175 black and white photos and 44 in colour, most not seen for more than 50 years. Jon Anderson is the enigmatic lead singer and founding member of Yes. He is also a composer, artist, writer, dreamer, lyricist, poet and musician, with a career spanning more than fifty years. Many books have been written about the band Yes, but until now none have covered Jon's early years in his first band, The Warriors, in any detail. This group played a key role in developing Jon's Anderson’s vocal range, work ethic and determination to succeed, as well as giving him valuable experience in the music business, which was of invaluable help as his career blossomed. David Watkinson takes us on a journey from the Lancashire beat music scene in the early 1960s to the vibrancy of London later in the decade. In the short time The Warriors existed - from 1963 to 1967 - they released a single, appeared on TV and in a movie, and spent a year following in the Beatles footsteps as a working group in Germany. As well as providing a complete history of The Warriors, this book also follows Jon's subsequent career in London, his appearances with Gun and his brief solo career as Hans Christian. He finally met Chris Squire and found a home in Mabel Greer's Toyshop, as that group gradually morphed into Yes during the summer of 1968. The book includes new interviews with Jon and many members of The Warriors, through its various line-up changes, most for the very first time. It also features a newly researched family tree, long forgotten photographs, of both the Warriors and the first line up of Yes, many items of memorabilia and an exclusive look into the band’s diaries. It closes with a comprehensive discography and a collectables section. This unique and meticulously researched book will delight both Yes and Jon Anderson fans as well as students of the 1960s music scene. It is essential reading for all lovers of the world's greatest progressive rock band, and fans of the genre's finest vocalist - Jon Anderson. The Paperback edition signed by the author is exclusively available through… https://burningshed.com/david-watkinson_jon-anderson-and-the-warriors_pb-book?filter_name=jon%20&filter_sub_category=true Price: £20, 234 x 156 mm (Royale), ISBN: 9781789520354 https://www.sonicbondpublishing.co.uk/ The book is also available to pre order from all bookshops and online stores. JON ANDERSON and THE WARRIORS THE LOST DEMOS VINYL EP In these early recordings by Jon we don’t get the lyrics, wordplay, mysticism or complex sounds and meanings which later became his signature. What we have here is a young man enjoying himself as a band member, trying to make a few pounds, travel and to emulate the Beatles a little. In these basic beginnings neither Jon Anderson or Ian Wallace shine much, but what we do get are little signs and glimpses of their potential.    Jon

Today’s fashion for self-built homes may have started a few decades ago, but for nearly 200 million years, a family of insects have been quietly developing their own, des res. Depending on where you come from, they are sometimes known as ‘straw worms’, or ‘case worms’, but for most they are simply called ‘caddis’. The origin of the word "caddis" is unclear, but it seems to date back as far as Izaak Walton's 1653 book The Complete Angler, where the angling hero notes how to fish for roach or dace using "case-worms or cadis" as bait. There are almost 200 species of caddisfly in the UK, the largest of which is more than 3cm long. In this episode of Living World, Lionel Kelleway hopes to find just a few of this number when he is joined on Lake Windermere by caddisfly expert Ian Wallace, who attempts to guide Lionel through these curious pond, lake and river dwelling insects. Along the way they discover some of the intricate biology which leads to the creation of their self built homes, a process that has even been adopted by jewelry designers in recent years. Lindsey Chapman hosts this revised Living World from 2007 and gently brings the story up to date for today's audience.

Kaliber
Malmjakt i skyddad natur

Kaliber

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2014 29:31

”It´s your chance to do business. – It´s about raising capital for the mining industry and about getting deals done. And we find that the PDAC is a wonderful platform in which we can do that. Du urholkar ju hela naturreservatet, du urholkar miljöskyddet. – This one here is a challenge for me to do because it is a 60 degree angle. – Because we did the drilling during the winter months there was some drilling material that couldn´t be identified at the time because it disappeared into the snow. Reporter Magdalena Martinsson magdalena.martinsson@sverigesradio.se Producent Sofia Boo sofia.boo@sverigesradio.se Reporter Taberg Alexandra Svedberg alexandra.svedberg@sverigesradio.se

The Faculty of Visual Art + Material Practice, Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the Canadian Photographic Portfolio Society Present: Through the Lens: Photography and Contemporary Art is a CPPS Panel Discussion featuring Mark Lewis, Liz Magor, Marianne Nicolson, and Ian Wallace, moderated by Kathleen Ritter. One could argue that, out of any technological changes, the advent of photography in the mid-nineteenth century has most fundamentally altered the way we see the world around us. Photography’s influence in our daily lives has been pervasive, and its growing ubiquity and impact over the course of the twentieth century has been intimately tied to systems of belief, power, and ideology. In short, one can no longer help but see the world through a lens. Likewise, photography’s impact on art has been profound. Of particular interest are the ways in which other traditional art forms have responded to the development of photography. How has painting changed to accommodate or reject photography? How does sculpture revision itself in relation to photographic ways of seeing? For artists working across media, what role does photography play in the changing modes of representation? A one-night panel discussion, moderated by Kathleen Ritter (‘00), is structured around a question posed to four artists—Mark Lewis (’11 D.Litt), Liz Magor (’71), Marianne Nicolson (’96), and Ian Wallace (former professor ’72-‘98)—who work across disciplines: What role does photography play in your practice?
