POPULARITY
My favourite book about the internet is by the Canadian author Douglas Coupland. In his 2014 book, Kitten Clone: Inside Alcatel-Lucent, Coupland asks, “Where did the sense of invention go—the sense of futurity—the sense that by working in tech, you were somehow building a better tomorrow, a smarter tomorrow, a more democratic tomorrow?" Colette Shade begins her book, Y2K: How the 2000s Became Everything (Essays on the Future That Never Was), in a period in which it was generally felt that by working in tech, you were somehow building a better tomorrow, a smarter tomorrow, and a more democratic tomorrow. (Plus ça change!) In Y2K, Colette asks, “What was the Y2K Era and why are we still living in its shadow?” Y2K's essays—on subjects as varied as blobby furniture and see-through consumer electronics; VOGUE magazine and disordered eating; and McMansions, Hummers and Starbucks—explore this question. We talk: 3:33 : "I want to write a book. What should I write about?" - Colette 4:04: Why 1998 was the best year of Colette's life 5:18: On being a kid in the '90s (Pokémon, riding your bike, watching TV) 6:00: The Dot-com Bubble in the 1990s 6:35: Netscape mentioned 6:55: "There was no understanding that [the internet] was a place where you could make a lot of money." - Colette 8:00: Colette's uncle got rich when his company was bought by Nokia 10:29: This meant that Colette went to college debt-free, without student loans 10:58: It's hard to write nonfiction about current events because you have to stop when it's time to publish, and current events keep happening. But Y2K feels timely, nonetheless. 13:27: The 90s/2000s purity culture is now repackaged as trad culture/retvrn culture 14:40: Colette wrote about taking a sex-positive sex ed class that contrasts from the typical way Americans learn sex ed; and, as Colette argues, played into the culture war now happening online and in real life 17:38: Colette says that the culture war is a proxy war 19:38: "The Christian right has a great enemy. It's gays! It's all those slutty women!" - Colette 20:25: This contrasts with her parents' worldview as secular liberals 22:12 "The people who want to ban books... that feels accessible to them, whereas gaining control of their economic conditions does not." - Colette 22:48: "Your body. My choice." 24:44: Donald Trump wants to make Canada the 51st state (wtf??) 25:41: 25% tariff 26:35 McMansions and Hummers as symbols of the post-9/11, pre-2008 bubble 27:40 "Americans don't always have the stomach" to think critically about their history - Colette 28:23: Colette on Greg Grandin's Pulitzer Prize-winning book The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America (2019) 29:35: Colette paraphrases Grandin's argument on the cause of the American Revolution, which gave Americans "a mandate for endless expansion" (sound familiar?) 33:15: Colette compares American expansion to the PlayStation game Katamari Damacy 35:04: America First 36:12: Cyberspace as a frontier 36:34: Early internet users saw themselves as Cyber Cowboys and settlers in "a place where they could be free," says Colette 37:55: Property ownership and the American Dream 39:00: The 2008 subprime mortgage crisis marked "a real break in American history," says Colette 40:45: The information superhighway 40:55: Olivia Rodrigo asks first dates whether they like Elon Musk 41:21: "The years start coming and they don't stop coming." - Smash Mouth 42:17: What advice would Colette give her teenage self? From rock N' roll to spearheading a global revival movement, the journey of my dear friend Daniel Hagen stands as a testament to the transformative power of Jesus. In our conversation, Dan and I talk about the journey of staying grounded and intimate with Jesus while leading a huge worship platform, the song that the world so desperately needs to hear, and how we worshipers are being called to the battleground. All this and so much more! In 2003, Daniel Hagen radically surrendered his life to Jesus Christ in a powerful encounter that would shake up his world of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n' roll. His heart was overrun with the love of God, and his songs began to overflow with his affection for the Father. Daniel's rock band, The Hollows, was on the verge of scoring a six-figure record deal. His love for Jesus compelled him to walk away from the life of fame and fortune and pursue knowing the Father more and making Him known to the nations. As he fell more in love with Jesus, He began to lead teams of everyday believers out onto the streets, where they would preach the gospel and demonstrate God's love through signs & wonders. Daniel is the Associate Director of Awakening Australia with Ben Fitzgerald, and is the leader of Awakening Music. Awakening is now a global movement, and their events are joined by thousands from all over the world with one purpose – the nations for Jesus! Daniel and Chelsea are happily married with four children and are the senior ministers of Fire Church ministries. Today, Daniel and Chelsea Hagen plant and oversee Fire Churches in Queensland and Victoria. Liminal Spaces are spaces that are transitional in nature, like hallways, waiting rooms, parking lots, and so on. This concept has spread like a virus for the last 2 years on Reddit and other websites, where internet communities post images of empty functional spaces. These images became popular because they contradict our expectations. The empty, lifeless images of functional spaces create an unsettling feeling of dissonance with the hustle and bustle of our lived experiences in these places. In YouTube compilations, these images are often put together layered with "dreamy" or "weird" music that seemingly "match" the aesthetics and add to the discomfort. This episode reclaims Muzak, Elevator Music, Airplane boarding music, software installing music, and telephone hold music among others, as Liminal Music: the conceptual sonic counterpart for the Liminal Spaces trend.Liminal Music is functional music that exists solely to be played as a background signal, an acoustic wallpaper composed to be heard but not listened to. You as a passive listener don't decide to listen to it, it's just there. This music is supposed to be designed to have psychological effects on the people who hear it. It soothes and relaxes the listener, fills a silence, modifies behaviours, encourages shoppers and increases workers' productivity, remembers you what you are doing and serves as company when you have to wait.Aesthetically, Liminal Music sounds watered down, without big shifts in dynamic levels. Among original tracks it's also common to hear light versions of popular tracks flattened out, making them mellow and easy to listen to.We could compare Liminal Music with #mood and #chill playlists on Spotify, or the famous YouTube channel "chill beats to study or relax to", but the difference is that in these last ones the listener chooses to press play. These songs are actually really well made, and sometimes (in the case of muzak and elevator music) are composed by great composers who put a lot of effort into making this music so secondary and unexciting.Listening to some of these songs can bring back different memories to different people, as these songs have been used for different purposes by different companies or places. Ironically some of these tracks that we recognise and hate from calling support lines for hours, can cause some sense of nostalgia and familiarity. So to recap: this is a collection of Liminal Music, presented isolated from its original context. Here we won't listen to the reverb, noises, chatter, speaker announcements, the sounds of people passing by, bad signal noises, or analogue distortions that normally accompany the songs in their original context. These songs are reduced to the original empty music, as in the Liminal Spaces trend.I hope you like it, and thank you for holding the line.TRACKLIST1 - Intro2 - Wayne Hill - Left Bank Two (Vision On Gallery Theme)3 - Tim Carleton - Opus No. 14 - Didier Malherbe & Loy Ehrlich - Hadouk5 - Chris Rae - Liquid Latin6 - Marco Iodice - Qatar Airways Onboard Music (Night Version)7 - Skype for Business - Hold Music8 - Seeburg Music Library - One Note Samba9 - Karl Jenkins - Mr. Lucky10 - Dick Walter - Playground of the Stars11 - Fresh Music Library - Let's Do Lunch (Saxophone Hold Music)12 - Clean Bandit - Rather Be - Instrumental13 - Muzak Orchestra - 3 Days of the Condor14 - James Last - Guantanamera15 - Stan LePard - 1996 Internet Starter Kit - Velkommen16 - Ryanair Boarding Music - Liam Aidan - Golden Skies17 - Glitch Game Music - Waiting Muzak 2.118 - Fresh Optimism - One to One full19 - Sam Cardon - Elevator Music 2332320 - Aisha Duo - Amanda21 - Frank Chacksfield - I'll Be There22 - Jean Marie Ecay & Philippe Bestion - Positive Dimension23 - The New Edition - Bette Davis Eyes

On this episode of “Tall, Dark and Random” Addison shares some true feelings after a topsy turvy week of lows. Nicholas recites a poem entitled “Song Cliches” telling of a toxic past relationship. The Q and A portion of the show brings to light some topics we didn’t expect. Do you believe in reincarnation? What do you think of alternative medicine? What in the hell is the “crucial” mosh? All of this plus a terrible story that was a little too over the top to make it in the final draft of Nick’s book. You guys had some great questions and today we will answer them all!
