My favourite book about the internet is by the Canadian author Douglas Coupland. In his 2014 book, Kitten Clone: Inside Alcatel-Lucent, Coupland asks, “Where did the sense of invention go—the sense of futurity—the sense that by working in tech, you were somehow building a better tomorrow, a smarter tomorrow, a more democratic tomorrow?" Colette Shade begins her book, Y2K: How the 2000s Became Everything (Essays on the Future That Never Was), in a period in which it was generally felt that by working in tech, you were somehow building a better tomorrow, a smarter tomorrow, and a more democratic tomorrow. (Plus ça change!) In Y2K, Colette asks, “What was the Y2K Era and why are we still living in its shadow?” Y2K's essays—on subjects as varied as blobby furniture and see-through consumer electronics; VOGUE magazine and disordered eating; and McMansions, Hummers and Starbucks—explore this question. We talk: 3:33 : "I want to write a book. What should I write about?" - Colette 4:04: Why 1998 was the best year of Colette's life 5:18: On being a kid in the '90s (Pokémon, riding your bike, watching TV) 6:00: The Dot-com Bubble in the 1990s 6:35: Netscape mentioned 6:55: "There was no understanding that [the internet] was a place where you could make a lot of money." - Colette 8:00: Colette's uncle got rich when his company was bought by Nokia 10:29: This meant that Colette went to college debt-free, without student loans 10:58: It's hard to write nonfiction about current events because you have to stop when it's time to publish, and current events keep happening. But Y2K feels timely, nonetheless. 13:27: The 90s/2000s purity culture is now repackaged as trad culture/retvrn culture 14:40: Colette wrote about taking a sex-positive sex ed class that contrasts from the typical way Americans learn sex ed; and, as Colette argues, played into the culture war now happening online and in real life 17:38: Colette says that the culture war is a proxy war 19:38: "The Christian right has a great enemy. It's gays! It's all those slutty women!" - Colette 20:25: This contrasts with her parents' worldview as secular liberals 22:12 "The people who want to ban books... that feels accessible to them, whereas gaining control of their economic conditions does not." - Colette 22:48: "Your body. My choice." 24:44: Donald Trump wants to make Canada the 51st state (wtf??) 25:41: 25% tariff 26:35 McMansions and Hummers as symbols of the post-9/11, pre-2008 bubble 27:40 "Americans don't always have the stomach" to think critically about their history - Colette 28:23: Colette on Greg Grandin's Pulitzer Prize-winning book The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America (2019) 29:35: Colette paraphrases Grandin's argument on the cause of the American Revolution, which gave Americans "a mandate for endless expansion" (sound familiar?) 33:15: Colette compares American expansion to the PlayStation game Katamari Damacy 35:04: America First 36:12: Cyberspace as a frontier 36:34: Early internet users saw themselves as Cyber Cowboys and settlers in "a place where they could be free," says Colette 37:55: Property ownership and the American Dream 39:00: The 2008 subprime mortgage crisis marked "a real break in American history," says Colette 40:45: The information superhighway 40:55: Olivia Rodrigo asks first dates whether they like Elon Musk 41:21: "The years start coming and they don't stop coming." - Smash Mouth 42:17: What advice would Colette give her teenage self? ‘Tiny forests’ spring up in urban areas to combat climate change

They often cover just a few square meters of urban space, and now they're growing across Australia to cool neighborhoods down on hot days. “Tiny forests,” as they are called, also mature in 10 to 20 years, rather than the usual 100 years, because of the way they're generated. And that could be a big benefit for Australia's suburbs. A school in Perth is busy creating a tiny forest. “I love it the most because I love animals and nature,” says one student. This particular type of forest can be planted in the tiniest of spaces, such as a car parking spot, a tennis court, or even a strip of land next to a street. The students are being guided by Grey Coupland and they're using the Miyawaki method to plant the forest. The method follows three central ideas. “It's planting locally native species that are specifically adapted to the area in which you are planting them, the soil remediation, and the high-density planting,” explains Coupland. Another advantage is that these forests take very little time to grow and help cool urban areas. And, once they're planted, the forests also become part of the school curriculum, which has benefits for the students. “The more they are immersed in nature, the more they care about it,” says teacher Cymbie Burgoyne. “The children who participate in this program, some have never played in the dirt before, some had never planted a plant before,” says Coupland. The project will also compare the health and well-being of students who take care of the forest, compared to students that don't. “We want to re-engage children with nature,” says Coupland. “We've got children on one end of the spectrum who are really worried about the climate crisis and feel they can't do anything about it. At the other end of the spectrum, we've got kids who are just on their iPads and their screens and totally disengaged.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Introduction to a new series on this podcast - one I've been intending to do for a while.  It's called Reactivities: Tales from Interesting Times.  Strauss & Howe originally called the cohort born between 1961 and 1981 the Thirteenth Generation, but the Coupland's "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture" soon made it the preferred moniker. In Strauss & Howe's cyclical view, every fourth generation would have similar attributes, making Generation X similar (for example) to the Lost Generation born at the end of the 19th century.  These generations, which were seen as responding to the changes of the Awakening,  were originally called "Reactive."  (Later, archetypal representations were used instead, and Gen X became a Nomad generation - although, still, I think we should be either Schemers or Scoundrels, instead.) This will be about the interesting times that such generations - and especially Generation X - lived through.

Did you know that by simply changing what you eat, you can negatively or positively impact your body? Did you know that by simply eating differently that autoimmune diseases, autism, and other disorders have been scientifically proven to lower the effects? Are you ready to feel differently, live differently, and regain your life? In this episode, Nancy Becher and Whitney Coupland discuss the effects that food has on all different kinds of diseases and disorders. There is no fluff in this episode! Everything talked about here is backed up by science and years of research studies. It's not just about eliminating sugars and sweets, your health depends on what YOUR body tolerates and at what frequency. Whitney Coupland helps people with autoimmune disease reclaim their health & confidence, and create a lifestyle that makes them feel good, for the long term. As someone who was diagnosed with Raynaud's Syndrome as a young teen, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in her early 30's, Whitney has walked in your shoes. She has been bombarded with information from natural practitioners, had questions and ideas totally disregarded by medical doctors, and spent what seems like endless time and money  trying to “fix” her body, with little success. Even as a certified nutritionist, Whitney was not seeing the results she wanted to see in her health, because it's not about knowing what you should be doing , it's about being able to follow through, and that's what Whitney's superpower is. In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Grey Coupland, a researcher and educator on Miyawaki forests, also known as pocket forests and tiny forests. We chat about some of the practices they take in her area of Australia where the native soils are very unique, as well as some of the surprises that have come up during her time working in this quickly evolving space.  Pocket Forests WA plants Miyawaki forests or 'pocket' forests as part of a  dedicated science program run from the Harry Butler Institute, Murdoch University. The research investigates the ecology and restoration potential of pocket forests in the Australian context. The program also engages citizen scientists through a dedicated science outreach program. The outreach program brings pocket forests into schools where the children plant their very own Miyawaki forest right in their school grounds. As part of the outreach program, the children monitor their pocket forests every month with ecologist and urban forest maker, Dr Grey Coupland, from Harry Butler Institute, becoming citizen scientists and hopefully inspiring the next generation of scientists and eco-warriors.   You can learn more about their work on Instagram at @pocketforestsWA and as well as at: https://pocketforestswa.org/   To support this podcast, join our patreon for early episode access at www.patreon.com/poorprolesalmanac For more information and updates, visit www.poorproles.com and subscribe to our e-mail list.

Ep 305 Whitney Coupland   On today's episode of The Live and Lead for Impact Podcast, Coach Kirsten is joined by Whitney Coupland. Whitney Coupland is a Certified Nutritional Practitioner and Life Coach.  In her online coaching practice, she helps people with autoimmune diseases navigate the diet, lifestyle, and mindset aspects of healing so they can start feeling like themselves again.   Whitney goes into detail about how she got into the practice, starting all the way back when she was 12 years old when she went for a polar dip and realised her arms and hands were numb, which she found out was Raynaud's Syndrome, and autoimmune condition. She also found when she was pregnant at 29 she had a second autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. She explains her work in the world is to help people like her, and Kirsten relates with her son having PAONS.   Whitney works one-on-one with her clients right now, mostly with people from the US and Canada, but also expanding to some in Europe. She explains she helps people find joyful ways of eating which will help them heal their bodies. She also talks about how she sets herself apart from others by focusing on what her clients want to do and what they enjoy and working around that, as well as continuing with social media using a few techniques to keep up engagement.   Kirsten asks Whitney what is something which is standing in the way of her making a bigger, bolder impact. Whitney explains her current challenge is messaging and how she feels like she is missing a large portion of people who don't realise their condition is autoimmune. Kirsten suggests targeting some particular symptoms of autoimmune rather than using that phrase to make people realise that's what they have and get their attention with what their life could be like with autoimmune treatment   Finally, Whitney finishes off with her words of advice, which are realising it's not about her. She explains how it's more important to get the message out there and help people rather than how she looks or comes across.   To learn more about Whitney you can visit her website at whitneycoupland.com, head over to Instagram https://www.instagram.com/whitneycoupland_/, and check out her YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@whitneycoupland   If you enjoyed this episode and want to gain a deeper insight into everything Coach Kirsten has to offer you, head over to the following websites: www.myImpactacademy.com/join  www.myimpactacademy.com/bookcall/

¡Absolutamente no! ¿No te parece?
