HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Have you ever tried something on and bought it just because it fit? Maybe part of you knew the color wasn't quite right or it wasn't the exact thing you were hoping to find. But you couldn't bring yourself to keep up the search? Or you genuinely didn't have time to keep looking? Often, those are the pieces that end up sitting in your closet for months because even though it technically fit your figure, it didn't fit your life, your style, or the way you wanted to feel. If you've ever struggled with that, then today's episode is for you. We're going to talk about why fit is only one piece of the style puzzle, the seven things that matter just as much as fit when you're evaluating clothes, why so many women settle for "good enough" pieces, and how to know whether something is truly worth bringing home. Because if your goal is to build a wardrobe you genuinely love, then you cannot let fit alone be the final say. You can do so much better than that, my friend. And in this episode, we're raising the bar and equipping you to stop settling and start making smarter buying decisions. So go refill your mug and settle in. I can't wait for you to hear this one. Why do we want our clothes to be forgiving? In this thought-provoking episode, Heather Creekmore unpacks the deeper meaning behind the fashion world’s favorite words—like "forgiving" and "flattering"—and explores why so many of us feel pressure to make our bodies fit a narrow standard. Do our clothes really have the power to absolve us, or is there something bigger at play? Join Heather Creekmore as she examines the surprising links between fashion lingo, theology, and our sense of self-worth. How does the language we use about our bodies sneak shame and judgment into our closets? What does it mean to break free from the idea of having "problem areas," and where can we look for true acceptance? Whether you struggle with body image or have ever hesitated in the dressing room mirror, this episode will challenge what you believe about your body, your clothes, and what it truly means to be "good enough." Tune in for powerful questions, real-life stories, and a fresh perspective that might change the way you get dressed tomorrow. Don’t miss it! BIO: Tony Martignetti is the evangelist for Planned Giving fundraising for small- and mid-size nonprofits.STORY: Two years into building his business, Tony convinced himself he could become the nation's thought leader on planned giving fundraising — not just for nonprofits, but for all Americans. He walked into a swanky Midtown Manhattan PR agency, got dazzled by a four-inch binder, and signed up at $6,750 per month. Two months and $13,500 later, his only return was a single bylined op-ed in a free subway newspaper.LEARNING: Check your ego. Vet your big ideas with honest, trusted people before spending any money. Understand that PR, even when it works, rarely converts to actual revenue. "This was an ego investment. I did it for my vanity project. I got one placement in a giveaway newspaper on a federal holiday when nobody was in the subway. That was it." Tony Martignetti Guest profileTony Martignetti is the evangelist for Planned Giving fundraising for small- and mid-size nonprofits. Connect with him on LinkedIn.Check out Tony's free How-to Guide on Planned Giving Fundraising.Worst investment everTwo years into running his consultancy, Tony had a big idea. He didn't just want to serve the nonprofit sector; he wanted to reach all Americans and make planned giving a concept that everyday citizens (not just charity insiders) would understand and act on.To do that, Tony decided he needed PR, the kind that lands you on 60 Minutes and gets Charlie Rose calling. He found his way to a prestigious agency in Midtown Manhattan, far from his own modest office in the Flatiron neighborhood. They had an 80-story skyscraper overhead to match. At the pitch meeting, they brought out what Tony describes as a four-inch-thick three-ring binder, every page in a plastic sleeve. Client on The Today Show. Client on Good Morning America. Client on 60 Minutes. Client with Charlie Rose. All this sucked Tony in, and he bought it all—hook, line, and sinker. They kept feeding his ego. He signed on at $6,750 per month. What he got for $13,500After two months, Tony canceled the contract. His total return: one bylined op-ed in AM New York, a free newspaper distributed in New York City subway stations. The placement ran on Martin Luther King Day. A federal holiday when subway ridership was a fraction of normal on a Tuesday. No leads from Good Morning America. No call from 60 Minutes. No magazine profiles. No newspaper reporters are following up. Nothing promising on the horizon. Just $13,500 lighter and one op-ed that almost nobody read. Why the agency let it happenThe agency saw a solo entrepreneur with ideas far bigger than the media landscape could realistically support, and instead of managing Tony's expectations honestly, they kept stoking his enthusiasm to secure the fee. They should have talked him down to what's reasonable to expect. Instead, they completely mismanaged his expectations and kept feeding his ego to capture a fee.The fundamental problem was that Tony's ambition—to educate ordinary Americans about the value of nonprofits, then about the value of supporting them long-term, then to direct them toward specific giving vehicles—was a multi-step awareness campaign that no single PR placement could accomplish. It was simply too much to ask of the media. The uncomfortable truth about PR and revenueYears after the failed agency experiment, Tony had better PR results. He hired a skilled freelance publicist who secured quotes for him in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the leading trade publication in his sector. Reporters on the nonprofit beat came to know him and called him when they needed a source. And yet: not one new client ever picked up the phone because they saw Tony's name in the Times. This taught him a lesson: PR is more about reputation and awareness than revenue.Lessons learnedPR might get done right, and it still won't save you. It can build reputation and awareness over the years. It is not a customer acquisition channel. For early-stage founders, the honest question to ask before writing a large check is: Is this actually going to build the business, or is this about making me feel like I've arrived?Don't go check your idea with the people who are going to get a fee for capitalizing on your pie-in-the-sky idea. The people most likely to validate an idea are often the ones most financially motivated to tell you it's great. Lawyers, consultants, vendors, agencies—all have a stake in your enthusiasm. The honest input has to come from people with nothing to gain: trusted colleagues, mentors, or experienced friends who will tell you what they actually think.Andrew's takeawaysEgo investments are a universal founder trap. Almost every entrepreneur who has started a business has made at least one purchase driven more by identity and aspiration than by clear ROI thinking. Naming it "a vanity investment" is the first step to catching it before it costs you.PR almost never converts to customers. This is one of the most consistent findings across hundreds of My Worst Investment Ever PR can build credibility and awareness over time. But it is not a sales channel, and expecting it to deliver clients, especially early in a business, is a setup for disappointment. The stage of business matters for marketing strategy. Early-stage businesses need direct, efficient client acquisition, not brand awareness campaigns aimed at broad audiences. Align your marketing spend with where you actually are, not where you imagine yourself to be.The media landscape has to be ready for your idea. Tony's vision of educating all Americans about planned giving required multiple layers of awareness-building before a single TV segment could have any effect. Even flawless PR execution couldn't shortcut that process.Actionable adviceAsk yourself: Is this a business investment or an ego investment? Before any significant marketing or PR spend, write down the specific customer acquisition outcome you expect. If you can't describe a clear path from the spend to a paying client, it's probably a vanity investment.Match your marketing strategy to your business stage. In the first two to three years, most professional service firms grow through direct outreach, referrals, and relationship-building rather than mass media. Invest accordingly.Understand what PR actually does. PR builds reputation and credibility over the long term. If that's your goal, it can be worth it. If your goal is revenue next quarter, look elsewhere. If you're going to do PR, set explicit expectations in writing. What placements will they pursue? In what timeframe? What counts as success? If the agency won't commit to specifics, that tells you something important.No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsTony's number one goal for the next 12 months is to publish his first self-published book: Planned Giving Accelerated, due out in September. A companion course will follow the book's release.Parting words "Thank you very much, Andrew. This was great, great fun. It's very different than what I've done."Tony Martignetti [spp-transcript] Connect with Tony MartignettiLinkedInYouTubePodcastAndrew's booksHow to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock MarketMy Worst Investment Ever9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid ThemTransform Your Business with Dr.Deming's 14 PointsAndrew's online programsValuation Master ClassThe Become a Better Investor CommunityHow to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market

Hey Fashion Besties!
Ever felt like you're being copied—by something invisible? Imagine hearing your child giggling upstairs, only to find him sleeping soundly in his bed, or hearing your daughter's voice calling from another room while she's cuddled right beside you. For one Canadian family near Toronto, their rental home has become a playground for an entity that mimics their every move. Is it harmless fun, or something darker preying on their routines? Listen closely—you might start to wonder who's really upstairs. Just hope it doesn't follow you home. After all, imitation isn't always flattering—sometimes it's terrifying. Ironically, upwards of 65% of the population face challenges to clothe their bodies. Why does the fashion industry ignore such a huge target market? It confounds her, but it is not the primary influence on fashion. She exclaims “style” is the distinguishing characteristic. It is not about size. It is about Style”. Style is the difference between ‘fine' and fabulous. Why the fashion industry ignores the majority in favor of a tiny minority makes no sense, but Style makes all the difference!“Style” is THE distinction” it is not about size it is about style,” she says.“Style” is the difference between just putting on clothes and ‘dressing,' the dash of spice or color, the well-chosen accessory or textural combination that makes the difference between fine and fabulous.” Clothing that fits, flatters, and enhances can be a most significant contribution to one's self-esteem and confidence.Helping others develop their own personal style is a path she began at an early age and has pursued her entire career. HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
At 240 episodes in, I think you already know about my love of fashion. But there's another facet to looking and feeling your best that I don't talk about as often here on HER Style Podcast and I think it deserves a little attention today: makeup and beauty! I have loved playing with different makeup applications since my teen years, when my parents gifted me the book, Teenage Beauty, by Bobbi Brown. Eventually, that followed with Bobbi's Beauty book, an extensive collection from Kevyn Aucoin, and many dollars spent on various eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, and blush variations over the years. While I've settled into a comfortable everyday makeup routine in recent years, I've been feeling inspired to mix it up lately. So I decided to research what's trending in the beauty industry this spring and summer. I stumbled upon 5 major themes that I'm confident will work for all of us! So in today's episode, we're talking about all things cosmetics, what looks I'm trying this season, and how to figure out what's right for you, too. If you want a few new foolproof makeup tricks to try, this is the episode for you! In this episode, I dig into a question that's always lurking in the back of a portrait photographer's mind – what really makes light flattering? It's a term we all use, but what does it actually mean? Is it just about soft shadows and low contrast, or is it more about the connection between the subject and the photographer? I talk through this while reflecting on a busy week – from a stunning wedding at Head Saw House to a corporate shoot for Barclays, and a spontaneous portrait session that reminded me why I love this job. I also share some thoughts on the updated Mastering Portrait Photography book, which hits shelves in September, complete with fresh images and a whole new chapter on AI post-production. If you've ever wondered what makes a light truly flattering – and why it's about more than just the gear – this episode is for you. And as always, wherever you are and whatever you're doing, be kind to yourself. Cheers P. Transcript Well, as I sit here in the studio, the sun is shining in through the windows and it's been a beautiful, beautiful week. I started it with a trip down to Devon with the in-laws. One great thing about being married to Sarah, whose family are from Plymouth, there are many great things about being married to Sarah. But one of the ones, in terms of geography, at least, is her family still lived down in Plymouth, in Devon, by the sea. So it was absolutely glorious to spend a couple of days down there walking the dog, drinking a beer, enjoying the sunshine, and the sun is still shining here right now. And on that happy note, I'm Paul. I'm very much looking forward to a barbecue, and this is the Mastering Portrait
Full Plate: Ditch diet culture, respect your body, and set boundaries.
"Dress for your body type", "define your waist", and "only wear what is flattering". The anti-fat bias we talk about on this podcast all the time extends into how we dress ourselves and what we feel worthy of wearing. As our bodies change (as they will continue to do throughout our life), many of us are met with barriers to body acceptance. And our clothes are a massive part of that. But they can also be a pivotal part of our liberation. This week we're joined by Dacy Gillespie, a weight-inclusive anti-diet personal stylist. We untangle the mess of our closets, dismantle patriarchal ideas of fashion, and challenge our sense of what we "should" be wearing based on our body shape and size. What's on Dacy's plate right now (and importantly, what's not) Dacy's journey to personal styling and anti-diet work Why having a passion for clothing is not vain Fashion's role in body image and societal pressures Understanding clothing sizes and body measurements Size acceptance and our clothes How to shop for new clothing as your body changes Steps to take to identify your personal style separate diet and beauty culture Letting go of old clothes and emotional attachments How clothing sizes impact our body image The life-changing magic of finding your authentic style Challenging the inner critic when shopping Barriers to accessing clothing in a larger body The limitations of “flattering” The fashion rules we need to ditch How to deal with your closet About Dacy: As a weight inclusive, anti-diet personal stylist, Dacy Gillespie helps her clients reject fashion rules and ideal standards of beauty imposed by the patriarchy, white supremacism, and capitalism so that they can uncover their authentic style. Through their work building a functional wardrobe, Dacy's clients make a mindset shift from thinking they need to wear what's flattering to unapologetically taking up space in the world. After a lifetime of jobs in high-stress careers that didn't suit her highly-sensitive, introverted personality, Dacy started mindful closet in 2013 in an attempt to create a more emotionally sustainable lifestyle. Intro: Theme/Topic (What's the problem, the question, etc.) Alexander the Great once learned that that there was a soldier in his army that was named after him. Flattering right? — Not in this case! The problem was that this soldier was a notorious coward! So, Alexander, who conquered the world when…
Awards season = the BEST week in fashion eveerrrr. And the best red carpet report, duh. In this week's episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly Katz reviews the 2025 Oscars red carpet looks, breaking down the best and most memorable fashion moments of the night. Be sure to watch this episode on our You-Tube channel and follow along on Holly's Pinterest Board for all the looks mentioned this week! From the fabulous to the "what were they thinking?", here's an outline of the superlatives and honorable mentions from our picks. Listen to the episode for the full report! Holly's Red Carpet Favorites Keltie Knight- BEYOND! o Look: Strapless tea-length white gown with beading on the bodice. o Designer: Paolo Sebastian o Why It Stood Out: A stunning, beaded masterpiece that made a bold statement. The gown's elegance was undeniable, with intricate beading that added depth and texture. Stacy Martin-Honorable Mention o Look: Beaded Louis Vuitton spaghetti strap triangle top dress. o Why It Stood Out: A sculptural, princess-seamed dress that was unique in its design. As we're sure this was much prettier in person, the intricate details and couture nature of this dress were truly so different from any other dress on the carpet. Snaps all around. Storm Reid- YYYAASSSS QUUUEENN o Look: Short red dress with a matching cape and belt. o Designer: Alexandre Vauthier Couture. o Why It Stood Out: A bold, striking choice for her first Oscars, showcasing a confident fashion-forward look; with a belt! Loving this on her. Ariana Grande-DYING. DEAD. DECEASED. o Look: Count them. Not 1 but 2 custom sculptural dresses. One red gown for the performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and one for the red carpet. -Designer: Schiaparelli SS25 Couture o Why It Stood Out: The structured peplum, sweetheart neckline, and crinoline were just mesmerizing on the red carpet gown. The performance gown was a mix of elegance and theatricality, complete with a 3D shoe illusion on the back. Whhaaatt? Fabulous times a gajilliion. Yasmin Finney-WOW: okay what am I looking at? o Look: Black mermaid dress with 3 foot sculptural feathers way above her head. o Designer: Harris Reed FW24 RTW o Why It Stood Out: A unique, avant-garde style that caught our attention for its boldness and creativity. It was so wacky that it took chic to another level. TOTAL badass proving fashion is about pushing boundaries. Charlotte Lawrence- Like I can't even. o Look: Pink beaded gown with low V-neck and bow at the waist. o Designer: Valentino SS25 RTW. o Why It Stood Out: An ethereal, fashion-forward look with delicate details, the gown made a powerful statement with its fresh, romantic vibe. JUST GORGEOUS. Demi Moore- ABSOLUTELY AGELESS. o Look: Silver beaded spaghetti strap dress with a low V-neck and train. o Designer: Custom Armani Privé. o Why It Stood Out: Demi brought the old Hollywood glamour with this masterpiece. The ruching on the hips totally cinched in her waist and accentuated her bust. Complete hourglass. Fashion "Don'ts" and "Like, really?" OYE. 1. Whoopi Goldberg- Just why. o Look: Shimmery plastic-looking off-the-shoulder shiny A-line dress. o Designer: Christian Siriano Fall 2025. o Girl, no: While a bold choice, the dress looked weird as it was too hip and youthful for her, leaving us wondering how this dress found its way to her. 2. Zoe Saldana- Nooooooooo.....(light sobbing in the background.) o Look: Burgundy tiered bubble dress with mesh bustline. -Designer: Custom Saint Laurent o Girl, no: A multi-tiered upside-down mushroom design that left her looking shapeless. The addition of sheer gloves only added to the awkwardness. Different? Yes. Flattering? No. 3. Sarah Paulson- I mean, help me understand, queen. o Look: Inflated red circus dress. -Designer: Marc Jacobs SS25 RTW o Girl, no: The exaggerated shoulder pads and over-the-top volume made it hard to appreciate the design's beauty. It looked like something out of Alice in Wonderland, on acid, inside of a dumpster fire, inside of a tornado. Like how could she go to the bathroom in this?!? 4. Goldie Hawn-Very, very sad. o Look: Gold strapless beaded dress with a cape. -Designer: Dolce & Gabbana o Girl, no: It felt dated and was a color that didn't go with her skin tone. Bad hair, the same color as the dress with plastic surgery gone wrong. Closing Thoughts *Don't forget to watch this episode on our You-Tube channel and follow along on Holly's Pinterest Board** The extravagant gowns and bold red carpet choices seen at the Oscars for 2025 did NOT disappoint! Parshas Vayishlach - The Issur Of Chanifah: Flattering And Praising A Sinner (Halachah From The Parshah Series) 11/16/2021
PREVIEW: Napoleonic Wars: SOCIETY: Author Anne Higonnet describes the fashion innovation of supple and flattering muslin from India by three prominent women during the Revolution and into the Empire, one of whom is Josephine. 1807 Empress Josephine
Nate and Brian discuss flattering your kids versus telling them the truth, what would happen if we stopped giving gifts on Christmas (it would be really really really horrible), and touch on some Christmas movie classics.
"The Bad Guys Are Winning," wrote Anne Applebaum for The Atlantic in 2021. "The War on History Is a War on Democracy," warned Timothy Snyder in The New York Times, also in 2021. "The GOP has found a Putin-lite to fawn over. That's bad news for democracy," argued Ruth Ben-Ghiat on MSNBC the following year, 2022. Within the last 10 years or so, and especially since the 2016 election of Trump, these authors — Anne Applebaum, Timothy Snyder, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, in addition to several others — have become liberal-friendly experts on authoritarianism. On a regular basis, they make appearances on cable news and in the pages of legacy newspapers and magazines–in some cases, as staff members–in order to warn of how individual, one-off “strongmen” like Trump, Putin, Orban, and Xi, made up a vague “authoritarian” axis hellbent on destroying Democracy for its own sake. But what good does this framing do and who does it absolve? Instead of meaningfully contending with US's sprawling imperial power and internal systems of oppression — namely being the largest carceral state in the world — these MSNBC historians reheat decades-old Axis of Evil or Cold War good vs evil rhetoric, pinning the horrors of centuries of political violence on individual "mad men." Meanwhile, they selectively invoke the "authoritarian" label, fretting about the need to save some abstract notion of democracy from geopolitical Bad Guys while remaining silent as the US funds, arms and backs the most authoritarian process imaginable — the immiseration and destruction of an entire people — specifically in Gaza. On this episode, we look at the advent and influence of MSNBC-approved historians, dissecting their selective anti-authoritarian posture and discussing how their work does little more than polish their careers and provide cover for US and US-allied militarism. Our guest is historian and author Greg Grandin.

In this episode not only do we talk about salons and suites that try and poach employees, we play a video of one. No edits! Now listen, it's gonna happen; but I am also gonna expose you when it gets a bit crazy. Cause lets be real, its good content lol If you're bold enough to put yourself out there, make videos, and steal you gotta be ready to receive bold back, so no hate or shade just playing you all the facts! Among other topics we also dive deep into Seans first anxiety attack, in his thirties! It was crazy but also refreshing as someone who has struggled with anxiety her whole life, attacks, and more for him to experience it and finally KNOW what its like how you basically feel like you're dying. And for our side quest discussion, did you know serial killers are on the decline in the USA!? IDK if its all the true crime girlies out here finding the clues, or maybe they're just getting better? This episode is one of my faves because it's such a mixed bag of nuts that we link all together for a great, fun episode.
“I want your body,” he said, without even a hello. Flattering and grateful he shared that with me, he didn't like my answer for what he needed to do So then I did a poll on my Instagram asking if you wanted this episode, as I haven't shared anything about fitness or nutrition for a long long time, and it was overwhelming, yes. So I want to share with you the few fundamental steps that keep me in shape, without any fuss or worrying about calorie counting or weighing foods. Oh… and I'm a father of 4, a husband, I run a multi-million dollar business, and simply a dude working at being my best self in all areas of life… I'm NOT a 20-something fitness model, that has all the time in the world to eat and train like so many “influencers” that are regurgitating advice that simply works for them. If you're tired of following mainstream diets, you've done endless hours of cardio and workouts… and you're wondering why a smart, ambitious person like yourself is still struggling to get in shape, this is for you.
This week, I'm joined by Dacy Gillespie, a weight-inclusive, anti-diet personal stylist. She helps her clients make a mindset shift from thinking they need to wear what's flattering to unapologetically taking up space in the world.Together, we discuss:Mindful shopping and minimalismHow to shop intentionallyThe cultural implications of the word “flattering”Cultivating personal style vs. wearing clothes to look thinnerReframing our thoughts around body changes as we age
