Despite there being fewer direct panels on the topic during the WEF Congress, Narula observes that every other panel on finance couldn't avoid talking about crypto. It shows, she says, that despite the fallout from all the speculation in “token casinos,” the technology is “not going away.”Neha also shares about Project Hamilton, the experimental digital cash project that MIT is driving in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. It's a digital dollar prototype idea that explores the parameters of what it means to produce “public money” with the rights that need to go along with that. She explains that in some respects it's an effort to recreate cash, noting that “you don't have to sign a terms of service or download an app” to use cash, and where the privacy of the user is preserved. Some people call bitcoin "the internet of money," suggesting the digital currency and related technologies could do for the financial system what the internet did to information distribution over the past few decades. But skeptics are still waiting for a "killer app," while bitcoin prices have never returned to their late 2017 peak when trading hit more than $20,000 per bitcoin.

Ten autumns ago came two watershed moments in the history of money. In September 2008, the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers triggered a financial meltdown from which the world has yet to fully recover. The following month, someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto introduced BitCoin, the first cryptocurrency. Before our eyes, the very architecture of money was evolving — potentially changing the world in the process. For something of such obvious importance, money is kind of mysterious. It can, as Homer Simpson once memorably noted, be exchanged for goods and services. But who decides exactly how many goods/services a given unit of money can buy? And what maintains the social contract that we all agree to go along with it? Technology is changing what money is and how we use it, and Neha Narula is a leader in thinking about where money is going. One much-hyped aspect is the advent of blockchain technology, which has led to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. We talk about what the blockchain really is, how it enables new kinds of currency, and from a wider perspective whether it can help restore a more individualistic, decentralized Web. Neha Narula is the Director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT. She obtained her Ph.D. in computer science from MIT, and worked at Google and Digg before joining the faculty there. She is an expert on scalable databases, secure software, cryptocurrencies, and online privacy.

When the Bitcoin Foundation fell apart and funding for Bitcoin core development was needed, the MIT founded the Digital Currency Initiative to step in. In the years since, the DCI has evolved into a vibrant center of cutting edge research on some of the most difficult challenges around blockchain technology. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have enabled a new architecture for peer-to-peer transactions without a trusted broker. As we have seen with the internet, distributed protocols can give users the ability to directly transact, circumventing slow-moving and sometimes corrupt intermediaries. One benefit of these systems is protecting consumers from payment censorship. Another potential benefit is opening up the currently privatized infrastructures underlying our financial and data systems. That's the radical promise of a world powered by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. We're not there yet, but in this sparky talk, digital currency researcher Neha Narula describes the collective fiction of money -- and paints a picture of a very different looking future.

Distributed systems can be pretty hard things to understand, so I'm always on the lookout for someone who manages to explain these things well. Neha Narula is one such person, and I was lucky enough to see one of her sessions at Øredev late last year. After spending several years researching distributed systems at Google, Neha is now working at the MIT Media Lab looking into uses of the blockchain. During our interview, we talk about distributed databases, why distributed transactions can be a pretty good solution sometimes, and how much Postgres rocks!
