Chile y la Unión Europea (UE) acordaron actualizar y modernizar el pacto comercial sellado hace dos décadas. La nueva versión incluye capítulos políticos, sobre defensa del medioambiente y equidad de género. Con este nuevo instrumento "llevamos nuestra relación con Chile, que ya es estrecha, a un nivel superior", dijo en Bruselas el vicepresidente de la Comisión Europea (brazo ejecutivo de la UE) y comisario europeo de Comercio, Valdis Dombrovskis. Este Acuerdo de Libre Comercio entre Chile y la UE data del 2002 y fue implementado en 2003. No obstante, las partes coincidieron en que la evolución del intercambio en ese período había tornado necesario que el instrumento fuera actualizado. La modernización del acuerdo entre la UE y Chile comprende dos "instrumentos legales paralelos". Por un lado, el Acuerdo Marco Avanzado, concentrado en la cooperación, inversiones y asuntos políticos, y que debe ser ratificado por todos los estados partes. Por el otro, un Acuerdo Interino de Libre Comercio que se limita a los temas que son atribución exclusiva de las instituciones de la UE (la Comisión, el Consejo y el Parlamento) y que deberá ser ratificado solamente por esas instancias. La canciller chilena, Antonia Urrejola, subrayo que el acuerdo aborda temas como los derechos humanos, buena gobernanza, equidad de género, cohesión social, transición energética y desarrollo sostenible. “Tiene cláusulas muy claras acerca de los principios democráticos, los derechos humanos y la participación de la sociedad civil, y ambas partes están de acuerdo en que la ruptura de estos elementos significaría que la otra parte podría suspender inmediatamente la aplicación del acuerdo", dijo Borrell.
