Legend of the Candyman: Candyman 1992 Revisited: Everything You Need to Know Before Nia DaCosta's New Film. Revisit the original Candyman before watching its “spiritual sequel” with us live! While the original Candyman has had two other sequels — Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) — DaCosta's film seems to be a direct continuation from the first rather than building on the other films of the franchise. So, with the new Candyman coming out later this month, there's no better time than now to go back to the original 1992 film, especially since Abdul-Mateen II's role as 2021's protagonist has a significant and direct connection to the first.

There is a lot of stuff happening in Nia DaCosta's "Candyman." The movie takes on a whole bunch of weighty ideas and attempts to explore them via the slasher film. But it's just possible that by trying to fit into that subgenre, and need to not go over 90 minutes, that it loses too much along the way.
As we are playing catch up we couldn't forget the New Candyman movie that came out this year. So we decided to make it a double feature with the original one since the new movie is a sequel. This week we review the classic 1992 movie w/ Tony Todd called Candyman. Has it held up, did we still enjoy it? Plus some trivia and discussion. Then we review the new highly anticipated sequel Candyman (2021). What we thought about the movie as a whole. Does it fit with the original and do we like it? What did some of it possibly mean in the metaphor department? How does it compare to the original? All this and more on this weeks episode. Hope you enjoy and follow till the end. JOIN US! A very soggy episode filled with apocalyptic hurricane flooding in New York and New Orleans. We shower praise on beavers because they are the perfect animal. Los Angeles is soaked in spilled oil. We review the New Candyman. We discuss the history of gore in horror and it's connections to American politics, from Vietnam, to Abu Ghraib, to Ferguson and the BLM movement. Shout outs to Tom Savini, George Romero, Wes Craven, and Tobe Hooper. And thanks for the killer review on iTunes, Antparty! Adilifu Nama is Professor of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author of several books including Super Black: American Pop Culture and Black Superheroes. His newest book is I Wonder U: How Prince Went beyond Race and Back. Nama critically interrogates the “new” film “Candyman” and locates it relative to horror genre conventions, cinematic representations of black pain and trauma, and what if anything the film has to offer in terms of a substantive engagement with the black culture industry and “representation” and so-called “wokeness”. Nama also makes a very provocative intervention that “Candyman” may in fact be Jordan Peele's way of speaking back to (white) critics and the general public's expectations about the trajectory of his career after the success of “Get Out”. By contrast, Chauncey makes the claim that “Candyman” may in fact be a genius film – depending on what is revealed about the intentionality of Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta in terms of parody and the film's too obvious political commentary. On this week's podcast, Chauncey also reflects on America's spiral down to outright fascism as seen in how Texas and the Supreme Court are taking away women's and black and brown people's civil and human rights. Mark is missing in action, so I invited my friends and fellow podcasters to join me for a full-on horror episode this week... give a warm welcome to Matt McCarthy & Katherine Cox from the Combs Crew podcast!
